It is motivated by the recent studies in wireless communications over delay Doppler channels that have both time and Doppler spreads, such as, satellite communication channels. We present some simple properties of DDT as well. The DDT study may provide insights of delay Doppler channels.

Abstract:In low earth orbit (LEO) satellite or missile communication scenarios, signals may experience extremely large Doppler shifts and have short visual time. Thus, direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) systems should be able to achieve acquisition in a very short time in spite of large Doppler frequencies. However, the traditional methods cannot solve it well. This work describes a new method that uses a differential decoding technique for Doppler mitigation and a batch process of FFT (fast Fourier transform) and IFFT (invert FFT) for the purpose of parallel code phase search by frequency domain correlation. After the code phase is estimated, another FFT process is carried out to search the Doppler frequency. Since both code phase and Doppler frequency domains are searched in parallel, this architecture can provide acquisition fifty times faster than conventional FFT methods. The performance in terms of the probability of detection and false alarm are also analyzed and simulated, showing that a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) loss of 3 dB is introduced by the differential decoding. The proposed method is an efficient way to shorten the acquisition time with slightly hardware increasing.
A New Approach for Time Reversal Communication over Doubly Spread Channels.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic channels, which exhibit dispersion both in time and frequency, are referred to as doubly spread channels. The newest time reversal (TR) receivers applied on those channels are based on the sparse spreading function estimation to compensate both delays and Doppler shifts for individual paths. In this paper, a new cross-ambiguity function (CAF) based approach is developed to handle the doubly spread channels. The proposed method identifies the spreading function by computing the CAF, and selects the delay and Doppler factors for each individual path sequentially. Unlike existing approaches of sparse channel estimation, the approach here determines the number of paths simply by thresholding CAF based on the noise power, thus no need to estimate the channel sparsity level; moreover, it has lower computational complexity and less memory requirement to support frequent channel update. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Using experimental data collected in shallow water with a mobile transmitter, processing results show a robust performance of the proposed TR receiver combined with block processing against rapid channel fluctuations.

Abstract:It is known that the conventional time reversal (or passive-phase conjugation) is not applicable to time-varying channels with large Doppler spreads. Recently a new time reversal communication technique that can simultaneously counteract delay and Doppler spreads has been proposed and tested via simulations [22]. In this paper, we present testing results from a field experiments of underwater acoustic communication, which was conducted with a fast mobile source in the Thousand-Island Lake located at Chunan, China, in December 2011. Experimental results demonstrate that the new time reversal receiver that uses a rake-like structure to compensate for multiple Doppler shifts can eliminate both Doppler spread introduced by temporal channel variations and delay spread caused by waveguide effects. As such, it provides a quite promising data transmission technique for underwater communication network.
FDTD and PSTD simulations for double negative (DNG) materials applications

Abstract:As a full wave simulation method, the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is capable of capturing the transient characteristics of wave propagation. This method has been successfully used in modeling the interactions of electromagnetic waves with double negative (DNG) materials. Another method, the pesudospectral time-domain (PSTD) method, is superior to FDTD in its linear dispersion relation. Another advantage of PSTD is that all field components are now located at a same position in the unit cell. Therefore, it is more natural to handle the boundary condition on interfaces between different materials. In this paper, FDTD and PSTD are used to simulate the transient evolution of wave propagation in structures with DNG materials. Numerical results are given to provide clear descriptions of the novel wave behaviors.
Transform Domain Equalization for Doubly Selective Channels

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel approach, namely, Transform Domain Equalization (TrDE), for high mobility wireless communications in which the channel often experiences serious doubly selective fading. In particular, we design a special framing and modulation scheme with parameters tuned to those of the doubly selective fading channel so as to facilitate the equalization. Data symbols in one block are arranged in a compact matrix form and modulated into the time-frequency domain (TFD). When transmitted over a doubly selective channel, the matrix is expanded along both dimensions as a result of the delay spread and the Doppler spread. By inserting proper Zero Paddings (ZP) into this matrix, the expanded array can be equalized in the transform domain (TrD) with a one-tap equalizer, where the TrD is orthogonal to the original TFD through a two-dimensional fast Fourier Transform (2D FFT). The proposed TrDE effectively mitigates the doubly selectivity with relatively low complexity because only a one-tap equalizer is needed. Further, by averaging over time and frequency, it achieves the maximum joint multipath-Doppler diversity. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results are presented to validate its excellent performances.
Fundamentals of Delay-Doppler Communications: Practical Implementation and Extensions to OTFS

Abstract:The recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, which is a typical Delay-Doppler (DD) communication scheme, has attracted significant attention thanks to its appealing performance over doubly-selective channels. In this paper, we present the fundamentals of general DD communications from the viewpoint of the Zak transform. We start our study by constructing DD domain basis functions aligning with the time-frequency (TF)-consistency condition, which are globally quasi-periodic and locally twisted-shifted. We unveil that these features are translated to unique signal structures in both time and frequency, which are beneficial for communication purposes. Then, we focus on the practical implementations of DD Nyquist communications, where we show that rectangular windows achieve perfect DD orthogonality, while truncated periodic signals can obtain sufficient DD orthogonality. Particularly, smoothed rectangular window with excess bandwidth can result in a slightly worse orthogonality but better pulse localization in the DD domain. Furthermore, we present a practical pulse shaping framework for general DD communications and derive the corresponding input-output relation under various shaping pulses. Our numerical results agree with our derivations and also demonstrate advantages of DD communications over conventional orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM).

Abstract:With the rapid development of space activities and deep space exploration, traditional space information transmission methods are facing severe challenges. This paper first introduces the concepts related to a space information network, and then focuses on one of its branches, i.e., delay/disruption-tolerant networks (DTN). Next, this paper emphasizes on introducing the coding techniques in DTN, and gives some proposals and simulation results. In this paper, the coding techniques involve source coding, channel coding, network coding and encryption coding. Finally, conclusions and future prospects are made.
On the Pulse Shaping for Delay-Doppler Communications

Abstract:In this paper, we study the pulse shaping for delay-Doppler (DD) communications. We start with constructing a basis function in the DD domain following the properties of the Zak transform. Particularly, we show that the constructed basis functions are globally quasi-periodic while locally twisted-shifted, and their significance in time and frequency domains are then revealed. We further analyze the ambiguity function of the basis function, and show that fully localized ambiguity function can be achieved by constructing the basis function using periodic signals. More importantly, we prove that time and frequency truncating such basis functions naturally leads to approximate delay and Doppler orthogonalities, if the truncating windows are periodic within the support. Motivated by this, we propose a DD Nyquist pulse shaping scheme considering signals with periodicity. Finally, our conclusions are verified by using various strictly or approximately periodic pulses.

Abstract:Time difference of arrival (TDOA) is essential in localization, communication, and navigation. Under ambient noise interference, the impulsive signal is transmitted over a long distance and reaches the sensor with a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Aiming to achieve a precise time delay estimation in scenarios with low SNR, this paper extends the time-reassigned extracting transform (TRET) theory to TDOA and proposes a time difference rearrangement extracting transform (TDRT) algorithm. The implementation process of the proposed algorithm comprises three steps. Initially, a rough two-dimensional time delay estimation is obtained by calculating the partial derivative of the short-time cross-power spectrum with respect to the frequency variable. Secondly, a rearrangement operation separates the signal's time-frequency (TF) points from the noise. Thirdly, a refined TDOA estimation is obtained by inverse Fourier transforming TF points extracted from the time-delay energy ridge. Simulation results show that the TDRT algorithm is effective in time delay estimation. Furthermore, experimental results prove that the performance of the TDRT algorithm outperforms comparable algorithms in low SNR environments.

Orthogonal Time Frequency Space with Delay-Doppler Alignment Modulation

Abstract:Delay-Doppler alignment modulation (DDAM) is a novel technique to mitigate time-frequency doubly selective channels by leveraging the high spatial resolution offered by large antenna arrays and multi-path sparsity of millimeter wave (mmWave) and TeraHertz (THz) channels. By introducing per-path delay and Doppler compensations, followed by path-based beamforming, it is possible to reshape the channel features with significantly reduced channel delay and Doppler spreads. This offers new degrees-of-freedom for waveform designs such as orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), since the reshaped channel can significantly relax the constraints on OTFS parameter selection and reduce the complexity of signal detection at the receiver. Therefore, in this paper, by combing DDAM with OTFS, we propose a novel technique termed DDAM-OTFS. Two implementation schemes are introduced for DDAM-OTFS, namely path-based alignment and bin-based alignment. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed DDAM-OTFS in terms of spectral efficiency (SE) and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) compared to the conventional OTFS.

Abstract:In this paper, a differential space-time modulation (DSTM) scheme is put forward for high speed train(HST) transmission system. In particular, the HST is equipped with multiple antennas. By exploiting the delay correlation inherited from the linear mobility of HST, this scheme performs extremely robustly and efficiently even without knowing CSI at the transmitter or receiver. The performance of an optimal unitary code in a specific 2 × 2 case is studied and the accurate analytical expression for its pairwise error probability(PEP) is obtained. Furthermore, a rather tight upper bound for the symbol error rate(SER) based on PEP is derived. Simulation results verify the good performance of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:This paper presents a new OFDM based modulation scheme for communication in doubly dispersive channels. We call this Delay-Doppler OFDM (DD-OFDM). Our waveform has the same sparse-channel benefits as orthogonal-time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation, while offering advantages in terms of simpler channel estimation, lower symbol error rate and lower out-of-band (OOB) emissions. We propose the DD-OFDM modulation scheme by introducing precoding across frames of frequency subcarriers. We show that the resulting waveform has different data carrying basis functions compared to OTFS modulation. We present the DD-OFDM receiver and derive the base-band model equations. We show that the base-band model for DD-OFDM leads to a simple and accurate channel estimation algorithm in non-integer fractional Doppler channels.

Abstract:For satellite or aircraft networks, tracking, telemetry, and control (TT&C) and data transmission between different nodes are necessary. Traditional measurement mostly adopts the frequency division duplex (FDD) mode and uses a continuous measurement system to achieve high-precision measurement. However, as the number of network nodes increases, the mode suffers from complex frequency domain allocation, and high-cost measurement and data transmission equipment is required. This paper proposes the integrated signal in time division duplex (TDD) mode to improve frequency utilization to address these circumstances. The proposed signal can transmit the TT&C and data at the same frequency. In addition, the high-precision time-frequency synchronization and relative measurement technology in the TDD mode for distributed spacecraft or aircraft networks are studied. The simulation results show that the signal can work normally when the Doppler extrapolation error is less than a quarter of the integration frequency. The distance extrapolation error should be less than a quarter of the length of a chip. The integrated signal reduces the frequency band occupation and realizes the integration of TT&C and data transmission. In addition, the measurement performance is reduced by only 2~3 dB compared with that of the traditional pure TT&C signal.

Abstract:The recent proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation shows signifcant advantages than conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for high mobility wireless communications. However, a challenging problem is the development of effcient receivers for practical OTFS systems with low complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel delay-Doppler reversal (DDR) technology for OTFS system with desired performance and low complexity. We present the DDR technology from a perspective of two-dimensional cascaded channel model, analyze its computational complexity and also analyze its performance gain compared to the direct processing (DP) receiver without DDR. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed DDR receiver outperforms traditional receivers in doubly-selective fading channels.
Cyclic Delay-Doppler Shift: A Simple Transmit Diversity Technique for Delay-Doppler Waveforms in Doubly Selective Channels

Abstract:Delay-Doppler waveform design has been considered as a promising solution to achieve reliable communication under high-mobility channels for the space-air-ground-integrated networks (SAGIN). In this paper, we introduce the cyclic delay-Doppler shift (CDDS) technique for delay-Doppler waveforms to extract transmit diversity in doubly selective channels. Two simple CDDS schemes, named time-domain CDDS (TD-CDDS) and modulation-domain CDDS (MD-CDDS), are proposed in the setting of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). We demonstrate the applications of CDDS on two representative delay-Doppler waveforms, namely orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) and affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), by deriving their corresponding CDDS matrices. Furthermore, we prove theoretically and experimentally that CDDS can provide OTFS and AFDM with full transmit diversity gain on most occasions.

Abstract:Space-time block coded differential spatial modulation (STBC-DSM) is a recently proposed spectral efficient multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) transmission technique. Existing detection algorithms for STBC-DSM are designed for quasi-static channels, which limits the application of STBC-DSM in fast fading channels. In this letter, we propose a novel decision-feedback differential detection (DFDD) based detector for STBC-DSM system under fast-fading channels. The proposed detector mitigates the impact of channel vector changes by using the DFDD metric which contains multiple previous detection results. Simulation results show that the proposed detector is more tolerable in time-selective channels than other existing STBC-DSM detectors.

Abstract:Much of the engineering behind current wireless systems has focused on designing an efficient and high-throughput downlink to support human-centric communication such as video streaming and internet browsing. This paper looks ahead to design of the uplink, anticipating the emergence of machine-type communication (MTC) and the confluence of sensing, communication, and distributed learning. We demonstrate that grant-free multiple access is possible even in the presence of highly time-varying channels. Our approach provides a pathway to standards adoption, since it is built on enhancing the 2-step random access procedure which is already part of the 5GNR standard. This 2-step procedure uses Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequences as preambles that point to radio resources which are then used to upload data. We also use ZC sequences as preambles / pilots, but we process signals in the Delay-Doppler (DD) domain rather than the time-domain. We demonstrate that it is possible to detect multiple preambles in the presence of mobility and delay spread using a receiver with no knowledge of the channel other than the worst case delay and Doppler spreads. Our approach depends on the mathematical properties of ZC sequences in the DD domain. We derive a closed form expression for ZC pilots in the DD domain, we characterize the possible self-ambiguity functions, and we determine the magnitude of the possible cross-ambiguity functions. These mathematical properties enable detection of multiple pilots through solution of a compressed sensing problem. The columns of the compressed sensing matrix are the translates of individual ZC pilots in delay and Doppler. We show that columns in the design matrix satisfy a coherence property that makes it possible to detect multiple preambles in a single Zak-OTFS subframe using One-Step Thresholding (OST), which is an algorithm with low complexity.

Abstract:Steady-motion-based Dopplerlet transform has been recently proposed and applied to the estimation of range and speed of moving sound source. In this paper, we develop a new Dopplerlet by introducing acceleration into its definition. Compared with the steady-motion-based Dopplerlet, the acceleration-based Dopplerlet can simultaneously exploit the information of range, speed and acceleration of a moving sound source and can better capture the true time-varying nature of the Doppler-like signals. Part I concerns the fundamentals of the proposed transform, while Part II is devoted to the implementations and applications.

Abstract:A novel channel estimation scheme is presented to combat long echo and high Doppler shift for Chinese digital television terrestrial broadcasting (DTTB) system. With this method, fast fading channel with Doppler shift about 200Hz can be well equalized even when 0dB echo at 31.8us exists with head length 420, other modes likes 595 and 945 are also supported. Simulation results are given under Chinese DTTB standard to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm. This method can also be adopted to cyclic padded (CP) or zero padded (ZP) OFDM systems and single carrier ones.
Multi-Carrier Modulation: An Evolution from Time-Frequency Domain to Delay-Doppler Domain

Abstract:The recently proposed orthogonal delay-Doppler division multiplexing (ODDM) modulation, which is based on the new delay-Doppler (DD) domain orthogonal pulse (DDOP), is studied. A substantial benefit of the DDOP-based ODDM or general delay-Doppler domain multi-carrier (DDMC) modulation is that it achieves orthogonality with respect to the fine time and frequency resolutions of the DD domain. We first revisit the family of wireless channel models conceived for linear time-varying (LTV) channels, and then review the conventional multi-carrier (MC) modulation schemes and their design guidelines for both linear time-invariant (LTI) and LTV channels. Then we discuss the time-varying property of the LTV channels' DD domain impulse response and propose an impulse function based transmission strategy for equivalent sampled DD domain (ESDD) channels. Next, we take an in-depth look into the DDOP and the corresponding ODDM modulation to unveil its unique input-output relation for transmission over ESDD channels. Then, we point out that the conventional MC modulation design guidelines based on the Wely-Heisenberg (WH) frame theory can be relaxed without compromising its orthogonality or without violating the WH frame theory. More specifically, for a communication system having given bandwidth and duration, MC modulation signals can be designed based on a WH subset associated with sufficient (bi)orthogonality, which governs the (bi)orthogonality of the MC signal within the bandwidth and duration. This novel design guideline could potentially open up opportunities for developing future waveforms required by new applications such as communication systems associated with high delay and/or Doppler shifts, as well as integrated sensing and communications, etc.
