Abstract:The search for sustainable alternatives to established materials is a sensitive topic in materials science. Due to their unique structural and physical characteristics, the composition of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be tuned by the exchange of the metal nodes and the functionalization of the organic ligands giving rise to a large configurational space. Considering the case of scandium terephthalate MOFs and adopting an automatized computational framework based on density-functional theory, we explore the impact of metal substitution with the earth-abundant isoelectronic elements Al and Y, and of ligand functionalization of varying electronegativity. We find that structural properties are strongly impacted by the metal ion substitution and only moderately by ligand functionalization. In contrast, the energetic stability, the charge density distribution, and the electronic properties - including the size of the band gap - are primarily affected by the termination of the linker molecules. Functional groups such as OH and NH$_2$ lead to particularly stable structures thanks to the formation of hydrogen bonds and affect the electronic structure of the MOFs by introducing mid-gap states.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is in Scandium Terephthalate MOFs, through metal - node substitution (using aluminum Al and yttrium Y) and ligand functionalization (introducing functional groups with different electronegativities), to explore how these changes affect the structural and electronic properties of the materials. Specifically, the research focuses on the following points:
1. **Structural properties**: Study the influence of metal - ion substitution and ligand functionalization on the structural properties of MOFs. The results show that metal - ion substitution has a significant impact on the structural properties, while the influence of ligand functionalization is relatively small, mainly causing some steric - hindrance effects.
2. **Energy stability**: Analyze the energy stability of MOFs under different conditions. The research finds that all the explored MOFs are stable, and the functionalization of the linking molecules has a great influence on their stability, especially the functional groups containing hydroxyl (OH) and amino (NH₂), which make the structure more stable due to the formation of hydrogen bonds.
3. **Charge - density distribution**: Reveal the bonding situation between species inside MOFs under different conditions through partial - charge analysis. The results indicate that the ligand terminus has a significant impact on the charge distribution, especially the functional groups containing hydroxyl and amino, which introduce mid - band states and change the electronic properties of MOFs.
4. **Electronic properties**: Explore the electronic properties of MOFs under different conditions, especially the change in the band - gap size. The research finds that all the considered MOFs are large - band - gap semiconductors and are expected to absorb ultraviolet rays. Ligand functionalization has a significant impact on the band - gap size, especially the functional groups containing hydroxyl and amino, which introduce mid - band states and significantly reduce the band - gap.
In summary, this paper aims to explore and understand the influence of metal - node substitution and ligand functionalization on the structural and electronic properties of scandium - based terephthalate metal - organic framework materials through systematic research, in order to find sustainable alternative materials and optimize their application potential in fields such as gas storage, photoelectricity and catalysis.
