Abstract:We will provide an explicit log-free zero-density estimate for $\zeta(s)$ of the form $N(\sigma,T)\le AT^{B(1-\sigma)}$. In particular, this estimate becomes the sharpest known explicit zero-density estimate uniformly for $\sigma\in[\alpha_0,1]$, with $0.985\le \alpha_0\le 0.9927$ and $3\cdot 10^{12}<T\le \exp(6.7\cdot 10^{12})$.

Abstract:Let $N(\sigma,T)$ denote the number of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function with real part greater than $\sigma$ and imaginary part lying between $0$ and $T$. In this article, we provide an explicit version of Carlson's zero density estimate, that is, $N(\sigma, T) \leq 0.78 T^{4 \sigma (1- \sigma)} (\log T)^{5-2 \sigma} $, with a slight improvement in the exponent of the logarithm factor.

Abstract:In two previous papers the second author proved some Carlson type density theorems for zeroes in the critical strip for Beurling zeta functions satisfying Axiom A of Knopfmacher. In the first of these invoking two additonal conditions were needed, while in the second an explicit, fully general result was obtained. Subsequently, Frederik Broucke and Gregory Debruyne obtained, via a different method, a general Carlson type density theorem with an even better exponent, and recently Frederik Broucke improved this further, getting $N(\sigma,T) \le T^{a(1-\sigma)}$ with any $a>\dfrac{4}{1-\theta}$. Broucke employed a new mean value estimate of the Beurling zeta function, while he did not use the method of Halász and Montgomery. Here we elaborate a new approach of the first author, using the classical zero detecting sums coupled with a kernel function technique and Halász' method, but otherwise arguing in an elementary way avoiding e.g. mean value estimates for Dirichlet polynomials. We will make essential use of the additional assumptions that the Beurling system of integers consists of natural numbers, and that the system satisfies the Ramanujan condition, too. This way we give a new variant of the Carlson type density estimate with similar strength as Turán's 1954 result for the Riemann $\zeta$ function, coming close even to the Density Hypothesis for $\sigma$ close to 1.

Abstract:For any $\sigma$ with $0\leq \sigma\leq 1$ and any $T>10$ sufficiently large, let $N_{\zeta}(\sigma,K,T)$ be the number of zeros $\rho=\beta+i\gamma$ of $\zeta_{K}(s)$ with $|\gamma|\leq T$ and $\beta\geq \sigma$ and the zero being counted according to multiplicity. For $k\geq3,$ we have \[ N_{\zeta}(\sigma,K,T)\ll T^{\frac{2k}{6\sigma-3}(1-\sigma)+\varepsilon}, \] where \[ \frac{2k+3}{2k+6}\leq \sigma<1 \] and the implied constant may depend on the number field $K$ and $\varepsilon.$ This improves previous results for $k\geq3$ of certain range of $\sigma$. Some other related improved results are also given.

Abstract:We show the zero-density estimate \[ N(\zeta_{\mathcal{P}}; \alpha, T) \ll T^{\frac{4(1-\alpha)}{3-2\alpha-\theta}}(\log T)^{9} \] for Beurling zeta functions $\zeta_{\mathcal{P}}$ attached to Beurling generalized number systems with integers distributed as $N_{\mathcal{P}}(x) = Ax + O(x^{\theta})$. We also show a similar zero-density estimate for a broader class of general Dirichlet series, consider improvements conditional on finer pointwise or $L^{2k}$-bounds of $\zeta_{\mathcal{P}}$, and discuss some optimality questions.

Abstract:We prove that $|\zeta(\sigma+it)|\le 70.7 |t|^{4.438 (1-\sigma)^{3/2}}\log^{2/3}|t|$ for $1/2\le\sigma\le 1$ and $|t|\ge 3$. As a consequence, we improve the explicit zero-free region for $\zeta(s)$, showing that $\zeta(\sigma+it)$ has no zeros in the region $\sigma \geq 1-1 /\left(54.004(\log |t|)^{2 / 3}(\log \log |t|)^{1 / 3}\right)$ for $|t| \geq 3$ and asymptotically in the region $\sigma \geq 1-1 /\left(48.0718(\log |t|)^{2 / 3}(\log \log |t|)^{1 / 3}\right)$ for $|t|$ sufficiently large.

Abstract:In a previous paper we proved a Carlson type density theorem for zeroes in the critical strip for Beurling zeta functions satisfying Axiom A of Knopfmacher. There we needed to invoke two additonal conditions, the integrality of the norm (Condition B) and an "average Ramanujan Condition" for the arithmetical function counting the number of different Beurling integers of the same norm (Condition G). Here we implement a new approach of Pintz, using the classic zero detecting sums coupled with Halász' method, but otherwise arguing in an elementary way avoiding e.g. large sieve type inequalities. This way we give a new proof of a Carlson type density estimate--with explicit constants--avoiding any use of the two additional conditions, needed earlier. Therefore it is seen that the validity of a Carlson-type density estimate does not depend on any extra assumption--neither on the functional equation, present for the Selberg class, nor on growth estimates of coefficients say of the "average Ramanujan type"-but is a general property, presenting itself whenever the analytic continuation is guaranteed by Axiom A.

Abstract:We demonstrate the impact of a generic zero-free region and zero-density estimate on the error term in the prime number theorem. Consequently, we are able to improve upon previous work of Pintz and provide an essentially optimal error term for some choices of the zero-free region. As an example, we show that if there are no zeros $\rho=\beta+it$ of $\zeta(s)$ for $$\beta>1-\frac{1}{c(\log t)^{2/3}(\log\log t)^{1/3}},$$ then $$\frac{|\psi(x)-x|}{x}\ll\exp(-\omega(x))\frac{(\log x)^9}{(\log\log x)^3},$$ where $\psi(x)$ is the Chebyshev prime-counting function, and $$\omega(x)=\left(\frac{5^6}{2^2\cdot 3^4\cdot c^3}\right)^{1/5}\frac{(\log x)^{3/5}}{(\log\log x)^{1/5}}.$$ This improves upon the best known error term for the prime number theorem, previously given by $$\frac{|\psi(x)-x|}{x}\ll_{\varepsilon}\exp(-(1-\varepsilon)\omega(x))$$ for any $\varepsilon>0$.

It is well known that estimates of the latter type imply estimates of the former type. Abstract:In this article, we improve on two explicit bounds of order $\log t$ for $\sigma$ close to $1$: $|\zeta'(\sigma +it)/\zeta(\sigma +it)|$ and $|1/\zeta(\sigma +it)|$. Our method provides marked improvements in the constants, especially with regards to the latter. These savings come from replacing a lemma of Borel and Carathédory, with a Jensen-type one of Heath-Brown's. Using an argument involving the trigonometric polynomial, we additionally provide a slight asymptotic improvement: $1/\zeta(\sigma +it) \ll (\log t)^{11/12}$.

Abstract:In this article, we extend the result of Conrey [5, Theorem 2] to shorter intervals for higher-order derivatives of the zeta function. That is we study the mean value of the product of two finite order derivatives of the zeta function multiplied by a mollifier in short intervals. In this process, we obtain better mollifier length in some short intervals compared to the length of mollifier implied by Conrey's result. These finer studies allow us to refine the error term of some classical results of Levinson and Montgomery [13], Ki and Lee [11] on zero density estimates of $\zeta^{(k)}$.

Abstract:We derive explicit upper bounds for the Riemann zeta-function $\zeta(\sigma + it)$ on the lines $\sigma = 1 - k/(2^k - 2)$ for integer $k \ge 4$. This is used to show that the zeta-function has no zeroes in the region $$\sigma > 1 - \frac{\log\log|t|}{21.233\log|t|},\qquad |t| \ge 3.$$ This is the largest known zero-free region for $\exp(171) \le t \le \exp(5.3\cdot 10^{5})$. Our results rely on an explicit version of the van der Corput $A^nB$ process for bounding exponential sums.

Abstract:Let $S(t) = \frac{1}{\pi}\Im \log\zeta\left(\frac{1}{2}+it\right)$. We prove an unconditional lower bound on the measure of the sets $\{t\in [T,2T] \colon S(t) \geq V\}$ for $\sqrt{\log\log T} \leq V \ll \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$. For $V \leq (\log T)^{1/3-\varepsilon}$ our bound has a Gaussian shape with variance proportional to $\log\log T$. At the endpoint, $V \asymp \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$, our result implies the best known $\Omega$-theorem for $S(t)$ which is due to Tsang. We also explain how the method breaks down for $V \gg \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$ given our current knowledge about the zeros of the zeta function. Conditionally on the Riemann hypothesis we extend our results to the range $\sqrt{\log\log T} \leq V \ll \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/2}$.

Abstract:We give a conditional lower bound on the number of non-trivial simple zeros for the Dedekind zeta function $\zeta_{K}(s)$, where $K$ is a quadratic number field. The conditional result is given by assuming a Lindelöf on average (in the $L^{6}$ sense) for both $\zeta(s)$ and $L(s,\chi)$, which can be seen as a stronger version of Conrey-Gonek-Ghosh's \cite{c} conditional result. This improves upon the work of Wu and Zhao \cite{Zhao}, who had a similar result.
