Abstract:Antenna behaviors such as mutual coupling, near-field propagation, and polarization cannot be neglected in signal and channel models for wireless communication. We present an electromagnetic-based array manifold that accounts for several complicated behaviors and can model arbitrary antenna configurations. We quantize antennas into a large number of Hertzian dipoles to develop a model for the radiated array field. The resulting abstraction provides a means to predict the electric field for general non-homogeneous array geometries through a linear model that depends on the point source location, the position of each Hertzian dipole, and a set of coefficients obtained from electromagnetic simulation. We then leverage this model to formulate a beamforming gain optimization that can be adapted to account for polarization of the receive field as well as constraints on the radiated power density. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves accuracy that is close to that of electromagnetic simulations. By leveraging the developed array manifold for beamforming, systems can achieve higher beamforming gains compared to beamforming with less accurate models.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is that in wireless communication, the influence of antenna array behaviors (such as mutual coupling, near - field propagation, and polarization) on signal and channel models cannot be ignored. Existing models usually simplify these complex behaviors, resulting in insufficient accuracy in practical applications. Therefore, this paper proposes an array manifold model based on electromagnetics, which can describe multiple complex behaviors under any antenna configuration, including mutual coupling, near - field propagation, and polarization, etc. By discretizing the antenna into a large number of Hertzian dipoles and using a set of coefficients obtained from electromagnetic simulation, this model can predict the electric field distribution under general non - uniform array geometries. In addition, based on this model, the author also proposes a beamforming gain optimization method, which can adapt to the polarization characteristics of the received field and the constraints of the radiated power density. Numerical results show that the proposed model is close to electromagnetic simulation in terms of accuracy and can achieve higher gain in beamforming compared to systems using less accurate models. In short, this paper aims to provide a more accurate antenna array model to improve the beamforming performance in wireless communication systems while taking into account the mutual coupling, near - field propagation, and polarization characteristics of the antennas.
