Abstract:We present a quantum Monte Carlo based density functional to describe droplet formation and supersolidity in dipolar systems. The usual Lee-Huang-Yang term, accounting for quantum correlations in the conventional extended Gross-Pitaievskii equation (eGPE), has been substituted by the correlation energy evaluated with Quantum Monte Carlo. We demonstrate the ability of the new functional to reproduce existing experimental data for the minimum critical number of atoms $N_\mathrm{c}$ required for droplet formation. $N_\mathrm{c}$ is a challenging quantity for theoretical predictions, and the eGPE provides only a qualitative description of it, mainly when it is applied to Dysprosium. We also use the new approach to characterize the BEC-supersolid transition. The quantum Monte Carlo based functional can be easily implemented in any existing eGPE code, improving the description of dipolar systems without increasing the computational cost.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the development and application of Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) density functional in dysprosium (Dy) dipolar systems to improve the description of ultracold dipolar systems, particularly the formation of droplets and the superfluid to supersolid phase transition in dysprosium atomic systems. The main issues include: 1. **Critical atom number for droplet formation (Nc)**: The traditional extended Gross-Pitaevskii Equation (eGPE) can only provide a qualitative description when predicting the minimum number of atoms required for droplet formation in dysprosium systems, posing a challenge for theoretical predictions. 2. **Description of the supersolid phase transition**: The eGPE has limitations in describing the transition from Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to supersolid phase, especially in terms of considering quantum correlation effects. The paper addresses these issues in the following ways: - A QMC-based density functional, called dysprosium density functional (Dy-DF), has been developed to replace the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) term in eGPE, which is used to describe quantum correlations. The new functional is able to reflect experimental data more accurately, especially in predicting Nc, which is a key difficulty in theoretical descriptions. - The paper uses Dy-DF to study the phase transition from BEC to supersolid, focusing on the changes in different observables, such as the superfluid fraction and contrast, and discusses the differences from eGPE predictions. - The construction of Dy-DF allows existing eGPE codes to easily implement this new method without increasing computational costs, thereby improving the accuracy of the description of dipolar systems. - The paper also analyzes the performance of Dy-DF in predicting axial mode frequencies, comparing it with experimental measurements, showing consistency and potential differences between theory and experiment, and emphasizing the importance of further experimental measurements to precisely determine the phase transition points. In summary, the paper resolves key challenges in the theoretical description of ultracold dipolar systems by introducing Dy-DF, especially in the accurate prediction of droplet formation and supersolid phase transitions in dysprosium systems, providing a powerful tool for a deeper understanding of the physical behavior of these systems.
