Abstract:In this paper, we determine explicit bases for Riemann--Roch spaces of linearized function fields, and we give a lower bound for the minimum distance of generalized algebraic geometry codes. As a consequence, we construct generalized algebraic geometry codes with good parameters.

Abstract:Explicit bases for the subfield subcodes of projective Reed-Muller codes over the projective plane and their duals are obtained. In particular, we provide a formula for the dimension of these codes. For the general case over the projective space, we generalize the necessary tools to deal with this case as well: we obtain a universal Gröbner basis for the vanishing ideal of the set of standard representatives of the projective space and we show how to reduce any monomial with respect to this Gröbner basis. With respect to the parameters of these codes, by considering subfield subcodes of projective Reed-Muller codes we obtain long linear codes with good parameters over a small finite field.

Abstract:We provide a theoretical study of Algebraic Geometry codes constructed from abelian surfaces defined over finite fields. We give a general bound on their minimum distance and we investigate how this estimation can be sharpened under the assumption that the abelian surface does not contain low genus curves. This approach naturally leads us to consider Weil restrictions of elliptic curves and abelian surfaces which do not admit a principal polarization.

Abstract:The study of linear codes over a finite field of odd cardinality, derived from determinantal varieties obtained from symmetric matrices of bounded rank, was initiated in a recent paper by the authors. There, one found the minimum distance of the code obtained from evaluating homogeneous linear functions at all symmetric matrices with rank, which is, at most, a given even number. Furthermore, a conjecture for the minimum distance of codes from symmetric matrices with ranks bounded by an odd number was given. In this article, we continue the study of codes from symmetric matrices of bounded rank. A connection between the weights of the codewords of this code and Q-numbers of the association scheme of symmetric matrices is established. Consequently, we get a concrete formula for the weight distribution of these codes. Finally, we determine the minimum distance of the code obtained from evaluating homogeneous linear functions at all symmetric matrices with rank at most a given number, both when this number is odd and when it is even.

Abstract:Based on curves over finite fields with many rational points, we present two constructions of linear codes from local expansions of functions at a fixed rational point. It turns out that codes from our constructions have the same bound on their parameters as Goppa's (1981) geometry codes. Furthermore, we prove that our second construction is equivalent to Goppa's construction. Finally, an additional construction of linear codes from maximal curves shows that these codes have better parameters than Goppa's geometry codes from maximal curves for a certain interval of parameters.

Abstract:First, we prove an algebraization result for rig-smooth algebras over a general noetherian ring; this positively answers the question raised in [Sta24, Tag 0GAX]. Then we prove a general partial algebraization result in non-archimedean geometry. The result says that we can always algebraize a geometrically reduced affinoid rigid-analytic space in "one direction" in an appropriate sense. As an application of this result, we show the remaining cases of the Artin-Grothendieck Vanishing for affinoid algebras, which were previously conjectured in [BM21, §7]. This allows us to deduce a stronger version of the rigid-analytic Artin-Grothendieck Vanishing Conjecture (see [Han20, Conj. 1.2]) over a field of characteristic 0. Using a completely different set of ideas, we also obtain a weaker version of this conjecture over a field of characteristic p>0.

Abstract:Function-field codes provide a general perspective on the construction of algebraic-geometry codes. We briefly review the theory of function-field codes and establish some new results in this theory, including a propagation rule. We show how to derive linear codes from function-field codes, thus generalizing a construction of linear codes due to Xing, Niederreiter, and Lam.

Abstract:We consider linear codes over a finite field of odd characteristic, derived from determinantal varieties, obtained from symmetric matrices of bounded ranks. A formula for the weight of a code word is derived. Using this formula, we have computed the minimum distance for the codes corresponding to matrices upper-bounded by any fixed, even rank. A conjecture is proposed for the cases where the upper bound is odd. At the end of the article, tables for the weights of these codes, for spaces of symmetric matrices up to order $5$, are given. We also correct typographical errors in Proposition 1.1/3.1 of [3], and in the last table, and we have rewritten Corollary 4.9 of that paper, and the usage of that Corollary in the proof of Proposition 4.10.

Encoding of algebraic geometry codes with quasi-linear complexity O(Nlog N)

Abstract:Fast encoding and decoding of codes have been always an important topic in code theory as well as complexity theory. Although encoding is easier than decoding in general, designing an encoding algorithm of codes of length $N$ with quasi-linear complexity $O(N\log N)$ is not an easy task. Despite the fact that algebraic geometry codes were discovered in the early of 1980s, encoding algorithms of algebraic geometry codes with quasi-linear complexity $O(N\log N)$ have not been found except for the simplest algebraic geometry codes--Reed-Solomon codes. The best-known encoding algorithm of algebraic geometry codes based on a class of plane curves has quasi-linear complexity at least $O(N\log^2 N)$. In this paper, we design an encoding algorithm of algebraic geometry codes with quasi-linear complexity $O(N\log N)$. Our algorithm works well for a large class of algebraic geometry codes based on both plane and non-plane curves. The main idea of this paper is to generalize the divide-and-conquer method from the fast Fourier Transform over finite fields to algebraic curves. Suppose we consider encoding of algebraic geometry codes based on an algebraic curve ${\mathcal X}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We first consider a tower of Galois coverings ${\mathcal X}={\mathcal X}_0\rightarrow{\mathcal X}_1\rightarrow\cdots\rightarrow{\mathcal X}_r$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, i.e., their function field tower $\mathbb{F}_q({\mathcal X}_0)\supsetneq\mathbb{F}_q({\mathcal X}_{1})\supsetneq\cdots \supsetneq\mathbb{F}_q({\mathcal X}_r)$ satisfies that each of extension \mathbb{F}_q({\mathcal X}_{i-1})/\mathbb{F}_q({\mathcal X}_i)$ is a Galois extension and the extension degree $[\mathbb{F}_q({\mathcal X}_{i-1}):\mathbb{F}_q({\mathcal X}_i)]$ {is a constant}. Then encoding of an algebraic geometry code based on ${\mathcal X}$ is reduced to the encoding of an algebraic geometry code based on ${\mathcal X}_r$.

Abstract:In the present paper, we show that if the dimension of an arbitrary algebraic geometry code over a finite field of even characteristic is slightly less than $n/2-g$ with $n$ being the length of the code and $g$ being the genus of the base curve, then it is equivalent to an Euclidean self-orthogonal code. Previously, such results required a strong condition on the existence of a certain differential. We also show a similar result on Hermitian self-orthogonal algebraic geometry codes. As a consequence, we can apply our result to quantum codes and obtain some good quantum codes. In particular, we obtain a $q$-ary quantum $[[q+1,1]]$-MDS code for an even power $q$ which is essential for quantum secret sharing.

Abstract:The focus of our research is the examination of Hermitian curves over finite fields, specifically concentrating on places of degree three and their role in constructing Hermitian codes. We begin by studying the structure of the Riemann-Roch space associated with these degree-three places, aiming to determine essential characteristics such as the basis. The investigation then turns to Hermitian codes, where we analyze both functional and differential codes of degree-three places, focusing on their parameters and automorphisms. In addition, we explore the study of subfield subcodes and trace codes, determining their structure by giving lower bounds for their dimensions. This presents a complex problem in coding theory. Based on numerical experiments, we formulate a conjecture for the dimension of some subfield subcodes of Hermitian codes. Our comprehensive exploration seeks to deepen the understanding of Hermitian codes and their associated subfield subcodes related to degree-three places, thus contributing to the advancement of algebraic coding theory and code-based cryptography.

Abstract:Ever since the seminal work of Goppa on algebraic-geometry codes, rational points on algebraic curves over finite fields have been an important research topic for algebraic geometers and coding theorists. The focus in this application of algebraic geometry to coding theory is on algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points (relative to the genus). Recently, the authors discovered another important application of such curves, namely to the construction of low-discrepancy sequences. These sequences are needed for numerical methods in areas as diverse as computational physics and mathematical finance. This has given additional impetus to the theory of, and the search for, algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points. This book aims to sum up the theoretical work on algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points and to discuss the applications of such curves to algebraic coding theory and the construction of low-discrepancy sequences.
