Abstract:We establish the uniqueness in the determination of a source term or a coefficient of the zeroth order term of a second-order parabolic equation. Moreover we consider the determination of a potential of the Schrödinger equation. For a parabolic equation, an unknown source term and coefficient depend on the time and $n-1$ spatial variables. For the Schrödinger equation, we assume that a potential depends on $n-1$ spatial variables. The data are taken on a part of the boundary satisfying some geometric condition.
Analysis of PDEs
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are to determine the unknown source terms or coefficients in partial differential equations. Specifically, the paper focuses on two inverse problems: 1. **Parabolic equations**: - Determine a source term that depends on time \(t\) and \(n - 1\) spatial variables. - Determine a zero - order term coefficient that depends on time \(t\) and \(n - 1\) spatial variables. 2. **Schrödinger equations**: - Determine a potential function that depends on \(n - 1\) spatial variables. The data for these problems are collected on a part of the boundary, and it is assumed that these data satisfy certain geometric conditions. Through these data, the author aims to prove the uniqueness of determining these unknown terms. ### Specific descriptions - **Parabolic equations**: - Consider a second - order parabolic equation: \[ P(t,x,D)u:=\partial_t u-\sum_{i,j = 1}^n\partial_{x_i}(a_{ij}(t,x)\partial_{x_j}u)+\sum_{i = 1}^n b_i(t,x)\partial_{x_i}u + c(t,x)u=R(t,x)f(t,x')\quad\text{in}\ Q \] - Boundary conditions: \[ u|_\Sigma = 0 \] - The unknown source term \(f(t,x')\) needs to be determined. - **Schrödinger equations**: - Consider a Schrödinger equation: \[ \sqrt{- 1}\partial_t u-\sum_{i,j = 1}^n\partial_{x_i}(a_{ij}(x)\partial_{x_j}u)+\sum_{i = 1}^n b_i(x)\partial_{x_i}u + c(x')u = 0\quad\text{in}\ Q \] - Boundary conditions: \[ u|_\Sigma = 0 \] - The unknown potential function \(c(x')\) needs to be determined. ### Main results - **Theorem 1**: For parabolic equations, if the normal derivative and part of the source term are given on a part of the boundary, then the source term \(f\) can be uniquely determined. - **Theorem 2**: For parabolic equations, if the normal derivative and part of the zero - order term coefficient are given on a part of the boundary, then the zero - order term coefficient \(c\) can be uniquely determined. - **Theorem 3**: For Schrödinger equations, if the normal derivative and part of the potential function are given on a part of the boundary, then the potential function \(c\) can be uniquely determined. The proofs of these results are based on Carleman estimates and some geometric conditions. Through these methods, the author is able to prove that under specific conditions, these inverse problems have unique solutions.
