Abstract:We prove the linear orbital stability of spectrally stable stationary discrete shock profiles for conservative finite difference schemes applied to systems of conservation laws. The proof relies on an accurate description of the pointwise asymptotic behavior of the Green's function associated with those discrete shock profiles, improving on the result of Lafitte-Godillon [God03]. The main novelty of this stability result is that it applies to a fairly large family of schemes that introduce some artificial possibly high-order viscosity. The result is obtained under a sharp spectral assumption rather than by imposing a smallness assumption on the shock amplitude.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to prove the stability of discrete shock profiles on linear orbits. Specifically, the author proves the linear orbital stability of spectrally stable stationary discrete shock profiles when a conservative finite - difference scheme is applied to a system of conservation laws. This proof is based on an accurate description of the point - by - point asymptotic behavior of the Green's function associated with these discrete shock profiles, improving the results of Lafitte - Godillon [God03]. ### Core problems of the paper 1. **Linear orbital stability**: Prove the linear orbital stability of spectrally stable stationary discrete shock profiles under a conservative finite - difference scheme. 2. **Asymptotic behavior of the Green's function**: Provide an accurate description of the point - by - point asymptotic behavior of the Green's function associated with discrete shock profiles. 3. **Scope of application**: Prove that this stability result is applicable to a larger family of numerical schemes with some possible high - order artificial viscosities introduced, and no small - quantity assumption needs to be imposed on the shock amplitude. ### Key assumptions and conditions - **Spectral stability**: It is required that the linearized numerical scheme has no unstable or marginally stable eigenvalues with respect to the operator of the discrete shock profile, except for 1 (because there exists a differentiable one - parameter family of discrete shock profiles). - **Non - linear orbital stability**: When the initial condition is a small perturbation of the discrete shock profile, the solution of the numerical scheme remains close to the manifold of the discrete shock profile. - **Exponential convergence**: The discrete shock profile \( u_s \) converges exponentially to its limit state \( u_\pm \). - **Matrix properties**: The matrices \( B_k^\pm \) and \( A_k^\pm \) have specific properties, such as the relationship between eigenvectors and eigenvalues. - **Dissipativity and diffusivity conditions**: The numerical scheme has linear \(\ell^r\)-stability at the end states \( u_\pm \) and satisfies the dissipativity and diffusivity conditions. ### Main contributions - **Improved Green's function estimates**: Provide more accurate and consistent estimates of the remainder of the Green's function, solving the limitations in previous research. - **Wide applicability**: The results are applicable to a larger family of numerical schemes with some possible high - order artificial viscosities introduced, not just specific schemes. - **Avoidance of small - quantity assumptions**: No small - quantity assumption needs to be imposed on the shock amplitude, thus expanding the scope of application of the existing theory. Through these contributions, the paper provides a new perspective and tools for understanding the stability of discrete shock profiles, which is helpful for further research on numerical methods for conservation law systems.
