Abstract:For each $p>0$ we define by recurrence a triangle $T^p(n,k)$ whose rows sum to the Fuss-Catalan numbers $ \frac{1}{p n+1}\binom{pn+1}{n}$, generalizing the known Catalan triangle corresponding to the case $p=2$. (In fact, $T^p(n,k)$ has an explicit formula counting simple lattice paths). Moreover, for some small values of $p$, the signed sums turn out to be known sequences. \end{abstract}

Multiparameter Fuss--Catalan numbers with application to algebraic equations

Abstract:We present an exposition on the Fuss--Catalan numbers, which are a generalization of the well known Catalan numbers. The literature on the subject is scattered (especially for the case of multiple independent parameters, as will be explained in the text), with overlapping definitions by different authors and duplication of proofs. This paper collects the main theorems and identities, with a consistent notation. Contact is made with the works of numerous authors, including the early works of Lambert and Euler. We demonstrate the application of the formalism to solve algebraic equations by infinite series. Our main result in this context is a new necessary and sufficient formula for the domain of absolute convergence of the series solutions of algebraic equations, which corrects and extends previous work in the field. Some historical material is placed in an Appendix.

Abstract:The Catalan numbers $C_n$ are an extremely well-studied sequence of numbers that appear as the answer to many combinatorial problems. Two generalizations of these numbers that have been studied are the Fuss-Catalan numbers and the Hypergraph Catalan numbers. In this paper, we study the combination of these, the Hypergraph Fuss-Catalan numbers. We provide some combinatorial interpretations of these numbers, as well as describe their generating function.

Abstract:The three main objects in noncrossing Catalan combinatorics associated to a finite Coxeter system are noncrossing partitions, clusters, and sortable elements. The first two of these have known Fuss-Catalan generalizations. We provide new viewpoints for both and introduce the missing generalization of sortable elements by lifting the theory from the Coxeter system to the associated positive Artin monoid. We show how this new perspective ties together all three generalizations, providing a uniform framework for noncrossing Fuss-Catalan combinatorics. Having developed the combinatorial theory, we provide an interpretation of our generalizations in the language of the representation theory of hereditary Artin algebras.

Abstract:The Catalan numbers $C_k$ were first studied by Euler, in the context of enumerating triangulations of polygons $P_{k+2}$. Among the many generalizations of this sequence, the Fuss-Catalan numbers $C^{(d)}_k$ count enumerations of dissections of polygons $P_{k(d-1)+2}$ into $(d+1)$-gons. In this paper, we provide a formula enumerating polygonal dissections of $(n+2)$-gons, classified by partitions $\lambda$ of $[n]$. We connect these counts $a_{\lambda}$ to reverse series arising from iterated polynomials. Generalizing this further, we show that the coefficients of the reverse series of polynomials $x=z-\sum_{j=0}^{\infty} b_j z^{j+1}$ enumerate colored polygonal dissections.

A generalization of conjugation of integer partitions

Abstract:We exhibit, for any positive integer parameter $s$, an involution on the set of integer partitions of $n$. These involutions show the joint symmetry of the distributions of the following two statistics. The first counts the number of parts of a partition divisible by $s$, whereas the second counts the number of cells in the Ferrers diagram of a partition whose leg length is zero and whose arm length has remainder $s-1$ when dividing by $s$. In particular, for $s=1$ this involution is just conjugation. Additionally, we provide explicit expressions for the bivariate generating functions. Our primary motivation to construct these involutions is that we know only of two other "natural" bijections on integer partitions of a given size, one of which is the Glaisher-Franklin bijection sending the set of parts divisible by $s$, each divided by $s$, to the set of parts occurring at least $s$ times.

Abstract:We study two classes of permutations intimately related to the visual proof of Spitzer's lemma and Huq's generalization of the Chung-Feller theorem. Both classes of permutations are counted by the Fuss-Catalan numbers. The study of one class leads to a generalization of results of Flajolet from continued fractions to continuants. The study of the other class leads to the discovery of a restricted variant of the Foata--Strehl group action.

Abstract:Cylindric plane partitions may be thought of as a natural generalization of reverse plane partitions. A generating series for the enumeration of cylindric plane partitions was recently given by Borodin. As in the reverse plane partition case, the right hand side of this identity admits a simple factorization form in terms of the "hook lengths" of the individual boxes in the underlying shape. The main result of this paper is a new bijective proof of Borodin's identity which makes use of Fomin's growth diagram framework for generalized RSK correspondences.

Abstract:The lattice of noncrossing partitions is well-known for its wide variety of combinatorial appearances and properties. For example, the lattice is rank-symmetric and enumerated by the Catalan numbers. In this article, we introduce a large family of new noncrossing partition lattices with both of these properties, each parametrized by a configuration of n points in the plane.

Abstract:Let $W^c(A_n)$ be the set of fully commutative elements in the $A_n$-type Coxeter group. Using only the settings of their canonical form, we recount $W^c(A_n)$ by the recurrence that is taken as a definition of the Catalan number $C_{n+1}$ and we find the Narayana numbers as well as the Catalan triangle via suitable set partitions of $W^c(A_n)$. We determine the unique bijection between $W^c(A_n)$ and the set of non-crossing diagrams of $n+1$ strings that respects the diagrammatic multiplication by concatenation in the $A_n$-type Temperley-Lieb algebra, along with the two algorithms implementing this bijection and its inverse.

Abstract:We show that the Schubert polynomial S_w specializes to the Catalan number C_n when $w=1(n+1)...2$. Several proofs of this result as well as a q-analog are given. An application to the singularities of Schubert varieties is given.

Abstract:The counting of partitions according to their genus is revisited. The case of genus 0 -- non-crossing partitions -- is well known. Our approach relies on two pillars: first a functional equation between generating functions, originally written in genus 0 and interpreted graphically by Cvitanovic, is generalized to higher genus; secondly, we show that all partitions may be reconstructed from the "(semi)-primitive" ones introduced by Cori and Hetyei. Explicit results for the generating functions of all types of partitions are obtained in genus 1 and 2. This gives a second order interpolation between expansions on ordinary or on free cumulants

Abstract:We study the enumeration of set partitions, according to their length, number of parts, cyclic type, and genus. We introduce genus-dependent Bell, Stirling numbers, and Faà di Bruno coefficients. Besides attempting to summarize what is already known on the subject, we obtain new generic results (in particular for partitions into two parts, for arbitrary genus), and present computer generated new data extending the number of terms known for sequences or families of such coefficients; this also leads to new conjectures.

Abstract:Based on the combinatorial interpretation of the ordered Bell numbers, which count all the ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, we introduce the Fibonacci partition as a Fibonacci permutation of its blocks. Then we define the Fibonacci-Fubini numbers that count the total number of Fibonacci partitions of $[n]$. We study the classical properties of this sequence (generating function, explicit and Dobiński-like formula, etc.), we give combinatorial interpretation, and we extensively examine the Fibonacci-Fubini arithmetic triangle. We give some associate linear recurrence sequences, where in some sequences the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds appear as well.
