Abstract:Despite being applied with success in many fields of materials science, Raman spectroscopy is not yet determinant in the study of electroceramics. Recent experimental and theoretical developments, however, should increase the popularity of Raman spectroscopy in this class of materials. In this Review, we outline the fields of application of Raman spectroscopy and microscopy in various electroceramic systems, defining current key bottlenecks and explaining promising recent developments. We focus our attention to recent experimental developments, including coupling Raman spectroscopy with other methodologies, and modelling approaches involving both the model-based data interpretation and the ab initio calculation of realistic Raman spectra.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the application and understanding of Raman spectroscopy in the research of electro - ceramic materials. Although Raman spectroscopy has been successfully applied in many fields of materials science, its application in the electro - ceramic field is relatively lagging. The paper aims to promote the popularization and use of this technology in the research of electro - ceramic materials by outlining the application areas of Raman spectroscopy in electro - ceramic materials, defining the current key bottlenecks, and explaining the recent experimental and technological progress. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **The current application status of Raman spectroscopy in electro - ceramic materials**: Although Raman spectroscopy is widely used in materials science, its application proportion in electro - ceramic materials is low. The paper explores the reasons for this phenomenon, including fewer research teams, preference for other characterization methods (such as X - ray diffraction), low signal - to - noise ratio, and strong material dependence. 2. **Technical bottlenecks**: The paper discusses in detail the technical bottlenecks that affect the application of Raman spectroscopy in electro - ceramic materials, including the uncertainty of spectral fitting, lack of knowledge of Raman - active phonons, difficulty in peak identification caused by long - range electrostatic effects, complexity of spectral interpretation of defective or disordered crystal materials, complex theories of residual stress research, and long acquisition time of hyperspectral Raman data sets. 3. **Latest progress**: The paper introduces the latest experimental and theoretical progress, which helps to overcome the above - mentioned technical bottlenecks. For example, the development of new Raman devices (such as confocal Raman microscopes, fast mapping stages) and new methods for calculating Raman spectra (including calculations from first principles and mesoscale) can improve the applicability and ease of use of Raman spectroscopy in the research of electro - ceramic materials. 4. **Application cases**: The paper also reviews several application cases of Raman spectroscopy in electro - ceramic materials, including phase - change research, research on defect and disorder effects, and electric - field responses of multiferroic materials. These cases demonstrate the unique advantages of Raman spectroscopy in solving the structure - performance relationship of electro - ceramic materials. In summary, the goal of this paper is to promote the wider application of this technology in the electro - ceramic field by summarizing and analyzing the current application status and latest progress of Raman spectroscopy in the research of electro - ceramic materials.
