Abstract:We derive a recurrence relation for the number of simple vertex-labelled bipartite graphs with given degrees of the vertices and use this result to obtain a new method for computing the growth function of the Artin monoid of type $A_{n-1}$ with respect to the simple elements (permutation braids) as generators. Instead of matrices of size $2^{n-1}\times 2^{n-1}$, we use matrices of size $p(n)\times p(n)$, where $p(n)$ is the number of partitions of $n$.

On Positive Braids, Monodromy Groups and Framings

Abstract:We associate to every positive braid a braid monodromy group, generalizing the geometric monodromy group of an isolated plane curve singularity. If the closure of the braid is a knot, we identify the corresponding group with a framed mapping class group. In particular, this gives a well defined knot invariant. As an application, we obtain that the geometric monodromy group of an irreducible singularity is determined by the genus and the Arf invariant of the associated knot.

Abstract:Given a representation $\varphi \colon B_n \to G_n$ of the braid group $B_n$, $n \geq 2$ into a group $G_n$, we are considering the problem of whether it is possible to extend this representation to a representation $\Phi \colon SM_n \to A_n$, where $SM_n$ is the singular braid monoid and $A_n$ is an associative algebra, in which the group of units contains $G_n$. We also investigate the possibility of extending the representation $\Phi \colon SM_n \to A_n$ to a representation $\widetilde{\Phi} \colon SB_n \to A_n$ of the singular braid group $SB_n$. On the other hand, given two linear representations $\varphi_1, \varphi_2 \colon H \to GL_m(\Bbbk)$ of a group $H$ into a general linear group over a field $\Bbbk$, we define the defect of one of these representations with respect to the other. Furthermore, we construct a linear representation of $SB_n$ which is an extension of the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation (LKBR) and compute the defect of this extension with respect to the exterior product of two extensions of the Burau representation. Finally, we discuss how to derive an invariant of classical links from the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss algebraic, combinatorial and topological properties of singular virtual braids. On the algebraic side, we state the relations between classical and singular virtual objects, in addition we discuss a Birman-like conjecture for the virtual case. On the topological and combinatorial side, we prove that there is a bijection between singular abstract braids, singular horizontal Gauss diagrams up to a certain equivalence relation, and singular virtual braids, in particular using singular horizontal Gauss diagrams we obtain a presentation of the singular pure virtual braid monoid.

Abstract:We prove for $m\geq1$ and $n\geq5$ that the level $m$ congruence subgroup $B_n[m]$ of the braid group $B_n$ associated to the integral Burau representation $B_n\to\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$ is generated by $m$th powers of half-twists and the braid Torelli group. This solves a problem of Margalit, generalizing work of Assion, Brendle--Margalit, Nakamura, Stylianakis and Wajnryb.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a Gröbner-Shirshov basis of the braid group $B_{n+1}$ in Adyan-Thurston generators. We also deal with the braid group of type $\bf{B}_{n}$. As results, we obtain a new algorithm for getting the Adyan-Thurston normal form, and a new proof that the braid semigroup $B^+_{n+1}$ is the subsemigroup in $B_{n+1}$.

Abstract:We characterise positive braid links with positive Seifert form via a finite number of forbidden minors. From this we deduce a one-to-one correspondence between prime positive braid links with positive Seifert form and simply laced Dynkin diagrams, as well as a simple classification of alternating positive braid knots.

Abstract:We prove that the quotients of the group algebra of the braid group on 3 strands by a generic quartic and quintic relation respectively, have finite rank. This is a special case of a conjecture by Broué, Malle and Rouquier for the generic Hecke algebra of an arbitrary complex reflection group. Exploring the consequences of this case, we will prove that we can determine completely the irreducible representations of this braid group for dimension at most 5, thus reproving a classification of Tuba and Wenzl in a more general framework.

Abstract:A toric braid is a braid whose closure is a torus link in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Manturov generalized toric braids that is called quasitoric braids and showed that the subset of quasitoric braids in the classical braid group is a subgroup of the braid group. We call this subgroup the quasitoric braid group. In this paper, we give two minimal generating sets for the quasitoric braid group and determine its abelianization. The minimalities of these two generating sets are obtained from a lower bound by the number of generators for the abelianization.

Hamiltonian Braids via Generating Functions

Abstract:Given a compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of the plane, one can define a generating function for it. In this paper, we show how generating functions retain information about the braid type of collections of fixed points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. One the one hand, we show that it is possible to define a filtration keeping track of linking numbers of pairs of fixed points on the Morse complex of the generating function. On the other, we provide a finite-dimensional proof of a Theorem by Alves and Meiwes about the lower-semicontinuity of the topological entropy with respect to the Hofer norm. The technical tools come from work by Le Calvez which was developed in the 90s. In particular, we apply a version of positivity of intersections for generating functions.

Braid monodromy for a trinomial algebraic equation by means of Mellin-Barnes integral representations

Abstract:We establish a braid monodromy representation of functions satisfying an algebraic equation containing three terms (trinomial equation). We follow global analytic continuation of the roots to a trinomial algebraic equation that are expressed by Mellin-Barnes integral representations. We depict braids that arise from the monodromy around all branching points. The global braid monodromy is described in terms of rational twists of strands that yield a classical Artin braid representation of algebraic functions. As a corollary, we get a precise description of the Galois group of a trinomial algebraic equation.

Abstract:Analysing statistical properties of the normal forms of random braids, we observe that, except for an initial and a final region whose lengths are uniformly bounded (that is, the bound is independent of the length of the braid), the distributions of the factors of the normal form of sufficiently long random braids depend neither on the position in the normal form nor on the lengths of the random braids. Moreover, when multiplying a braid on the right, the expected number of factors in its normal form that are modified, called the expected penetration distance, is uniformly bounded.We explain these observations by analysing the growth rates of two regular languages associated to normal forms of elements of Garside groups, respectively to the modification of a normal form by right multiplication.A universal bound on the expected penetration distance in a Garside group yields in particular an algorithm for computing normal forms that has linear expected running time.

Abstract:In this work we present a natural surjective map from rigid braids in B_3 (in Garside sense) to SL_2(N). This map provides an upper and a lower bound for the dilatation factor of a pseudo-Anosov 3-strand braid. These bounds only depend on the canonical length of the classical Garside structure of B_3.

Abstract:We initiate the study of the twisted conjugacy growth series of a finitely generated group, the formal power series associated to the twisted conjugacy growth function. Our main result is that this series is always an $\mathbb{N}$-rational function when the group in question is virtually abelian, and that this function can be explicitly computed from appropriate information about the group and the twisting endomorphism. We also show that the relative growth series of any twisted conjugacy class in a finitely generated virtually abelian group is itself an explicitly computable $\mathbb{N}$-rational function.

Abstract:This is the second in a series of papers developing a theory of total positivity for loop groups. In this paper, we study infinite products of Chevalley generators. We show that the combinatorics of infinite reduced words underlies the theory, and develop the formalism of infinite sequences of braid moves, called a braid limit. We relate this to a partial order, called the limit weak order, on infinite reduced words. The limit semigroup generated by Chevalley generators has a transfinite structure. We prove a form of unique factorization for its elements, in effect reducing their study to infinite products which have the order structure of the natural numbers. For the latter infinite products, we show that one always has a factorization which matches an infinite Coxeter element. One of the technical tools we employ is a totally positive exchange lemma which appears to be of independent interest. This result states that the exchange lemma (in the context of Coxeter groups) is compatible with total positivity in the form of certain inequalities.
Combinatorial proof for the rationality of the bivariate generating series of maps in positive genus

Abstract:In this paper, we give the first combinatorial proof of a rationality scheme for the generating series of maps in positive genus enumerated by both vertices and faces, which was first obtained by Bender, Canfield and Richmond in 1993 by purely computational techniques. To do so, we rely on a bijection obtained by the second author in a previous work between those maps and a family of decorated unicellular maps. Our main contribution consists in a fine analysis of this family of maps. As a byproduct, we also obtain a new and simpler combinatorial proof of the rationality scheme for the generating series of maps enumerated by their number of edges, originally obtained computationally by Bender and Canfield in 1991 and combinatorially by the second author in 2019.
