Abstract:We prove that the universal covering $\Wi M$ of an $n$-dimensional closed spin PSC manifold $M$ whose fundamental group $\pi_1(M)$ is a right-angled Artin group has macroscopic dimension $\dim_{mc}\Wi M\le n-2$. This confirms Gromov's conjecture in the case of right-angled Artin groups.

Abstract:We prove using a novel random matrix model that all right-angled Artin groups have a sequence of finite dimensional unitary representations that strongly converge to the regular representation. We deduce that this result applies also to: the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic manifold that is either three dimensional or standard arithmetic type, any Coxeter group, and any word-hyperbolic cubulated group. One strong consequence of these results is that any closed hyperbolic three-manifold has a sequence of finite dimensional flat Hermitian vector bundles with bottom of the spectrum of the Laplacian asymptotically at least 1.

Abstract:This paper focuses on tools for constructing 4-manifolds that have fundamental group $G$ isomorphic to a right-angled Artin group and that are also minimal, in the sense that they minimize $b_2(M)$, the dimension of $H_2(M;\mathbb{Q})$. For a finitely presented group $G$, define $h(G) = \min\{ b_2(M) | M \in \mathcal M(G) \}$. In this paper, we explore the ways in which we can bound $h(G)$ from below using group cohomology and the tools necessary to build 4-manifolds that realize these lower bounds. We give solutions for right-angled Artin groups, or RAAGs, when the graph associated to $G$ has no 4-cliques, and further we reduce this problem to the case when the graph is connected and contains only 4-cliques. We then give solutions for many infinite families of RAAGs and provide a conjecture to the solution for all RAAGs.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{G}$ be the subgroup $\mathfrak{S}_{n-q} \times \mathfrak{S}_{q}$ of the $n$-th symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ for $n-q \geq q$. In this paper, we study the $\mathfrak{G}$-invariant part of the rational cohomology group of the pure braid group $P_{n}$. The invariant part includes the rational cohomology of a spin hyperelliptic mapping class group of genus $g$ as a subalgebra when $n=2g+2$, denoted by $H^*(P_{n})^{\mathfrak{G}}$. Based on the study of Lehrer-Solomon, we prove that they are independent of $n$ and $q$ in degree $*\leq q-1$. We also give a formula to calculate the dimension of $H^*(P_{n})^{\mathfrak{G}}$ and calculate it in all degree for $q\leq 3$.

Abstract:We prove that every right-angled Artin group occurs as a finite-index subgroup of the outer automorphism group of another right-angled Artin group. We furthermore show that the latter group can be chosen in such a way that the quotient is isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^N$ for some $N$. For these, we give explicit constructions using the group of pure symmetric outer automorphisms. Moreover, we need two conditions by Day-Wade and Wade-Brück about when this group is a right-angled Artin group and when it has finite index.

Acylindrical hyperbolicity of outer automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups

Abstract:We study the acylindrical hyperbolicity of the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group $A_\Gamma$. When the defining graph $\Gamma$ has no SIL-pair (separating intersection of links), we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ to be acylindrically hyperbolic. As a corollary, if $\Gamma$ is a random connected graph satisfying a certain probabilistic condition, then $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ is not acylindrically hyperbolic with high probability. When $\Gamma$ has a maximal SIL-pair system, we derive a classification theorem for partial conjugations. Such a classification theorem allows us to show that the acylindrical hyperbolicity of $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ is closely related to the existence of a specific type of partial conjugations.

Abstract:We compute the relative orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $[\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_{n+1}]\times \mathbb{P}^1$, with respect to vertical fibers. Via a vanishing property of the Hurwitz-Hodge bundle, 2-point rubber invariants are calculated explicitly using Pixton's formula for the double ramification cycle, and the orbifold quantum Riemann-Roch. As a result parallel to its crepant resolution counterpart for $\mathcal{A}_n$, the GW/DT/Hilb/Sym correspondence is established for $[\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_{n+1}]$. The computation also implies the crepant resolution conjecture for relative orbifold Gromov-Witten theory of $[\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_{n+1}]\times \mathbb{P}^1$.

Right-angled Artin groups as normal subgroups of mapping class groups

Abstract:We construct the first examples of normal subgroups of mapping class groups that are isomorphic to non-free right-angled Artin groups. Our construction also gives normal, non-free right-angled Artin subgroups of other groups, such as braid groups and pure braid groups, as well as many subgroups of the mapping class group, such as the Torelli subgroup. Our work recovers and generalizes the seminal result of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin, which gives free, purely pseudo-Anosov normal subgroups of mapping class groups. We give two applications of our methods: (1) we produce an explicit proper normal subgroup of the mapping class group that is not contained in any level $m$ congruence subgroup, and (2) we produce an explicit example of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class with the property that all of its even powers have free normal closure and its odd powers normally generate the entire mapping class group. The technical theorem at the heart of our work is a new version of the windmill apparatus of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin, which is tailored to the setting of group actions on the projection complexes of Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara.

Abstract:Let $\GSpin(V)$ (resp. $\GPin(V)$) be a general spin group (resp. a general Pin group) associated with a nondegenerate quadratic space $V$ of dimension $n$ over an Archimedean local field $F$. For a nondegenerate quadratic space $W$ of dimension $n-1$ over $F$, we also consider $\GSpin(W)$ and $\GPin(W)$. We prove the multiplicity-at-most-one theorem in the Archimedean case for a pair of groups ($\GSpin(V), \GSpin(W)$) and also for a pair of groups ($\GPin(V), \GPin(W)$); namely, we prove that the restriction to $\GSpin(W)$ (resp. $\GPin(W)$) of an irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of $\GSpin(V)$ (resp. $\GPin(V)$) is multiplicity free.

Abstract:We define for every affine Coxeter graph, a certain factor group of the associated Artin group and prove that some of these groups appear as orbifold fundamental groups of moduli spaces. Examples are the moduli space of nonsingular cubic algebraic surfaces and the universal nonhyperelliptic smooth genus three curve. We use this to obtain a simple presentation of the mapping class group of a compact genus three topological surface with connected boundary. This leads to a modification of Wajnryb's presentation of the mapping class groups in the higher genus case that can be understood in algebro-geometric terms.

Abstract:We study the spin Gromov-Witten (GW) theory of $\mathbb{P}^1$. Using the standard torus action on $\mathbb{P}^1$, we prove that the associated equivariant potential can be expressed by means of operator formalism and satisfies the 2-BKP hierarchy. As a consequence of this result, we prove the spin analogue of the GW/Hurwitz correspondence of Okounkov-Pandharipande for $\mathbb{P}^1$, which was conjectured by J. Lee. Finally, we prove that this correspondence for a general target spin curve follows from a conjectural degeneration formula for spin GW invariants that holds in virtual dimension 0.

On non-elliptic symplectic manifolds

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with non-ellipticity. We can define an almost Kähler structure on $M$ by using the given symplectic form. Hence, we have a $\G=\pi_1(M)$-invariant almost Kähler structure on the universal covering, $\ti M$, of $M$. Using Darboux coordinate charts, we globally deform the given almost Kähler structure on $\ti M$ off a Lebesgue measure zero subset to obtain a $\G$-invariant Lipschitz Kähler flat structure on $\ti M$ which is $\G$-homotopy equivalent to the given almost Kähler structure. Analogous to Teleman's $L^2$-Hodge decomposition on PL manifolds or Lipschitz Riemannian manifolds, we give a $L^2$-Hodge decomposition theorem on $\ti M$ with respect to the Lipschitz Kähler flat metric. Using an argument of Gromov, we give a vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic $p$-forms, $p\not=n$ (resp. a non-vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic $n$-forms) on $\ti M$, then the signed Euler characteristic satisfies $(-1)^n\chi(M)\geq0$ (resp. $(-1)^n\chi(M)>0$). Similarly, for any closed even dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$, we can construct a $\G$-invariant Lipschitz Kähler flat structure on the universal covering, $(\ti M, \ti g)$, of $(M, g)$ which is $\G$-homotopy equivalent to and quasi-isometric to the metric $\ti g$. As an application, using Gromov's method we show that the Chern-Hopf conjecture holds true in closed even dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive curvature (resp. strictly negative curvature), it gives a positive answer to a Yau's problem due to S. S. Chern and H. Hopf.

Quantitative bordism over acyclic groups and Cheeger-Gromov $ρ$-invariants

Abstract:We prove a bordism version of Gromov's linearity conjecture over a large family of acyclic groups, for manifolds with arbitrary dimension. Every group embeds into one of these acyclic groups, and thus it follows that the conjecture is true if one allows to enlarge a given group. Our result holds in both PL and smooth categories, and for both oriented and unoriented cases. In the PL case, our results hold without assuming bounded local geometry. As an application, we prove that there is a universal linear bound for the Cheeger-Gromov $L^2$ $\rho$-invariants of PL $(4k-1)$-manifolds associated with arbitrary regular covers. We also show that the minimum number of simplices in a PL triangulation of $(4k-1)$-manifolds with a fixed simple homotopy type is unbounded if the fundamental group has nontrivial torsion. The proof of our main results builds on quantitative algebraic and geometric techniques over the simplicial classifying spaces of groups.

Abstract:We prove several analogs of Gromov's macroscopic dimension conjecture with extra curvature assumptions. More explicitly, we show that for an open Riemannian $n$-manifold $(M,g)$ of nonnegative Ricci (resp. sectional) curvature, if it has uniformly positive scalar curvature and it is uniformly volume noncollapsed, then the essential (resp. Hausdorff) dimension of an asymptotic cone, as a notion of largeness, has a sharp upper bound $n-2$, which is $2$ less than the upper bound for an open Riemannian manifold with only nonnegative Ricci curvature. As a consequence, the dimension of space of linear growth harmonic functions of $M$ has upper bound $n-1$ which is also $2$ less than the sharp bound $n+1$ when $M$ only has nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also prove the first Betti number upper bound is $n-2$ if $M$ is compact, and $n-3$ if $M$ is non-compact. When $M$ is compact we show a fibration theorem over torus, and a rigidity theorem for the fiber when the first Betti number upper bound is achieved.

Abstract:Using obstruction bundles, composition law and the localization formula, we compute certain 3-point genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the Hilbert scheme of 3-points on the complex projective plane. Our results partially verify Ruan's conjecture about quantum corrections for this Hilbert scheme.

Abstract:We show that the fundamental groups of smooth $4$-manifolds that admit geometric decompositions in the sense of Thurston have asymptotic dimension at most four, and equal to 4 when aspherical. We also show that closed $3$-manifold groups have asymptotic dimension at most 3. Our proof method yields that the asymptotic dimension of closed $3$-dimensional Alexandrov spaces is at most 3. We thus obtain that the Novikov conjecture holds for closed $4$-manifolds with such a geometric decomposition and closed $3$-dimensional Alexandrov spaces. Consequences of these results include a vanishing result for the Yamabe invariant of certain $0$-surgered geometric $4$-manifolds and the existence of zero in the spectrum of aspherical smooth $4$-manifolds with a geometric decomposition.

Abstract:If $X$ is a closed $2n$-dimensional aspherical manifold, i.e., the universal cover of $X$ is contractible, then the Chern-Hopf-Thurston conjecture predicts that $(-1)^n\chi(X)\geq 0$. We prove this conjecture when $X$ is a complex projective manifold whose fundamental group admits an almost faithful linear representation over any field. In fact, we prove a much stronger statement that if $X$ is a complex projective manifold with large fundamental group and $\pi_1(X)$ admits an almost faithful linear representation, then $\chi(X, \mathcal{P})\geq 0$ for any perverse sheaf $\mathcal{P}$ on $X$. To prove this, we introduce a vanishing cycle functor of multivalued one-forms and apply techniques from non-abelian Hodge theory, both in archimedean and non-archimedean settings. These techniques allow us to deduce the desired positivity from the geometric properties of pure and mixed period maps.

Abstract:For each nonnegative integer $g$, we classify the ramification types and monodromy groups of indecomposable coverings of complex curves $f: X\to Y$ where $X$ has genus $g$, under the hypothesis that $n:=°(f)$ is sufficiently large and the monodromy group is not $A_n$ or $S_n$. This proves a conjecture of Guralnick and several conjectures of Guralnick and Shareshian.
