Abstract:In this paper we prove that for all degree $6$ polynomials with rational coefficients that $F(\mathbb{Z}^2) \neq \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$. The answers a question of B. Poonen and J. S. Lew in the degree 6 case. This work builds on previous work with S. Yamagishi.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that there does not exist $F \in \mathbb{Q}[x,y]$ of degree $4$ such that $F(\mathbb{Z}^2) = \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$. In particular, this answers a question by John S. Lew and Bjorn Poonen for quartic polynomials.

Abstract:The generic monic polynomial of sixth degree features 6 a priori arbitrary coefficients. We show that if these 6 coefficients are appropriately defined in two different ways|in terms of 5 arbitrary parameters, then the 6 roots of the corresponding polynomial can be explicitly computed in terms of radicals of these parameters. We also report the 2 constraints on the 6 coefficients of the polynomial implied by the fact that they are so defined in terms of 5 arbitrary parameters; as well as the explicit determination of these 5 parameters in terms of the 6 coefficients of the sextic polynomial.

Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.
Analytic properties of sextet polynomials of hexagonal systems

Abstract:In this paper we investigate analytic properties of sextet polynomials of hexagonal systems. For the pyrene chains, we show that zeros of the sextet polynomials $P_n(x)$ are real, located in the open interval $(-3-2\sqrt{2},-3+2\sqrt{2})$ and dense in the corresponding closed interval. We also show that coefficients of $P_n(x)$ are symmetric, unimodal, log-concave, and asymptotically normal. For general hexagonal systems, we show that real zeros of all sextet polynomials are dense in the interval $(-\infty,0]$, and conjecture that every sextet polynomial has log-concave coefficients.

Abstract:We present an example of a strictly positive polynomial with rational coefficients that can be decomposed as a sum of squares of polynomials over R but not over Q . This answers an open question by C. Scheiderer posed as the second question in [14, Section 5.1] . We verify that the example we construct defines a nonsingular projective hypersurface, giving also a positive answer to the third question posed in that section.

Most Odd-Degree Binary Forms Fail to Primitively Represent a Square

Abstract:Let $F$ be a separable integral binary form of odd degree $N \geq 5$. A result of Darmon and Granville known as ``Faltings plus epsilon'' implies that the degree-$N$ \emph{superelliptic equation} $y^2 = F(x,z)$ has finitely many primitive integer solutions. In this paper, we consider the family $\mathscr{F}_N(f_0)$ of degree-$N$ superelliptic equations with fixed leading coefficient $f_0 \in \mathbb{Z} \smallsetminus \pm\mathbb{Z}^2$, ordered by height. For every sufficiently large $N$, we prove that among equations in the family $\mathscr{F}_N(f_0)$, more than $74.9\%$ are insoluble, and more than $71.8\%$ are everywhere locally soluble but fail the Hasse principle due to the Brauer--Manin obstruction. We further show that these proportions rise to at least $99.9\%$ and $96.7\%$, respectively, when $f_0$ has sufficiently many prime divisors of odd multiplicity. Our result can be viewed as a strong asymptotic form of ``Faltings plus epsilon'' for superelliptic equations and constitutes an analogue of Bhargava's result that most hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ have no rational points.

Abstract:In Dickson (1896-1897) [2], the author listed all permutation polynomials up to degree 5 over an arbitrary finite field, and all permutation polynomials of degree 6 over finite fields of odd characteristic. The classification of degree 6 permutation polynomials over finite fields of characteristic 2 was left incomplete. In this paper we complete the classification of permutation polynomials of degree 6 over finite fields of characteristic 2. In addition, all permutation polynomials of degree 7 over finite fields of characteristic 2 are classified.
On odd powers of nonnegative polynomials that are not sums of squares

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of nonnegative polynomials $P$ such that $P^k$ is not a sum of squares for any odd $k\geq 1$, calling such $P$ \emph{stubborn}. We develop a new invariant of a real isolated zero of a nonnegative polynomial in the plane, that we call \emph{the SOS-invariant}, and relate it to the well-known delta invariant of a plane curve singularity. Using the SOS-invariant we show that any polynomial that spans an extreme ray of the convex cone of nonnegative ternary forms of degree 6 is stubborn. We also show how to use the SOS-invariant to prove stubbornness of ternary forms in higher degree. Furthermore, we prove that in a given degree and number of variables, nonnegative polynomials that are not stubborn form a convex cone, whose interior consists of all strictly positive polynomials.

Abstract:We prove that every real nonnegative ternary quartic whose complex zero set is smooth can be represented as the determinant of a symmetric matrix with quadratic entries which is everywhere positive semidefinite. We show that the corresponding statement fails for the Robinson polynomial, answering a question by Buckley and Šivic.

Abstract:Let $F_1,\ldots,F_R$ be homogeneous polynomials with integer coefficients in $n$ variables with differing degrees. Write $\boldsymbol{F}=(F_1,\ldots,F_R)$ with $D$ being the maximal degree. Suppose that $\boldsymbol{F}$ is a nonsingular system and $n\ge D^2 4^{D+6}R^5$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$, whose main term is positive if (i) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution over the $p$-adic units $\mathbb{U}_p$ for all primes $p$, and (ii) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution in the open cube $(0,1)^n$. This can be viewed as a smooth local-global principle for $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ with differing degrees. It follows that, under (i) and (ii), the set of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ is Zariski dense in the set of its solutions.

Abstract:In this work, multiplicities of zeros of skew polynomials are studied. Two distinct definitions are considered: First, $ a $ is said to be a zero of $ F $ of multiplicity $ r $ if $ (x-a)^r $ divides $ F $ on the right; second, $ a $ is said to be a zero of $ F $ of multiplicity $ r $ if some skew polynomial $ P = (x-a_r) \cdots (x-a_2) (x-a_1) $, having $ a_1 = a $ as its only right zero, divides $ F $ on the right. Neither of these two notions implies the other for general skew polynomials. We show that, in the first case, Lam and Leroy's concept of P-independence does not behave naturally, whereas a union theorem still holds. In contrast, we show that P-independence behaves naturally for the second notion of multiplicities. As a consequence, we provide extensions of classical commutative results to general skew polynomials. These include: (1) The upper bound on the number of (P-independent) zeros (counting multiplicities) of a skew polynomial by its degree, and (2) The equivalence of P-independence, Hermite interpolation and the invertibility of confluent Vandermonde matrices (for which we introduce skew polynomial Hasse derivatives).

Abstract:This paper investigates whether or not polynomials that are irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathbb{Z}$ can remain irreducible under substitution by all quadratic polynomials. It answers this question in the negative in the degree 2 and 3 cases and provides families of examples in both the affirmative and the negative categories in the degree 4 case. Finally this paper explores what happens in higher degree cases, providing a family of examples in the negative category and offering a conjectured family for the positive category.

Birational geometry of sextic double solids with a compound $A_n$ singularity

Abstract:Sextic double solids, double covers of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along a sextic surface, are the lowest degree Gorenstein Fano 3-folds, hence are expected to behave very rigidly in terms of birational geometry. Smooth sextic double solids, and those which are $\mathbb Q$-factorial with ordinary double points, are known to be birationally rigid. In this article, we study sextic double solids with an isolated compound $A_n$ singularity. We prove a sharp bound $n \leq 8$, describe models for each $n$ explicitly and prove that sextic double solids with $n > 3$ are birationally non-rigid.

Abstract:We compute the fundamental group of the complement of each irreducible sextic of weight eight or nine (in a sense, the largest groups for irreducible sextics), as well as of 169 of their derivatives (both of and not of torus type). We also give a detailed geometric description of sextics of weight eight and nine and of their moduli spaces and compute their Alexander modules; the latter are shown to be free over an appropriate ring.

Abstract:We investigate $k$-superirreducible polynomials, by which we mean irreducible polynomials that remain irreducible under any polynomial substitution of positive degree at most $k$. Let $\mathbb F$ be a finite field of characteristic $p$. We show that no $2$-superirreducible polynomials exist in $\mathbb F[t]$ when $p=2$ and that no such polynomials of odd degree exist when $p$ is odd. We address the remaining case in which $p$ is odd and the polynomials have even degree by giving an explicit formula for the number of monic 2-superirreducible polynomials having even degree $d$. This formula is analogous to that given by Gauss for the number of monic irreducible polynomials of given degree over a finite field. We discuss the associated asymptotic behaviour when either the degree of the polynomial or the size of the finite field tends to infinity.

Abstract:We consider the problem of determining the maximum number of common zeros in a projective space over a finite field for a system of linearly independent multivariate homogeneous polynomials defined over that field. There is an elaborate conjecture of Tsfasman and Boguslavsky that predicts the maximum value when the homogeneous polynomials have the same degree that is not too large in comparison to the size of the finite field. We show that this conjecture holds in the affirmative if the number of polynomials does not exceed the total number of variables. This extends the results of Serre (1991) and Boguslavsky (1997) for the case of one and two polynomials, respectively. Moreover, it complements our recent result that the conjecture is false, in general, if the number of polynomials exceeds the total number of variables.
