Abstract:We give a general review of recent developments in the theory of vortices in superfluids and superconductors, discussing why the dynamics of vortices is important, and why some key results are still controversial. We discuss work that we have done on the dynamics of quantized vortices in a superfluid. Despite the fact that this problem has been recognized as important for forty years, there is still a lot of controversy about the forces on and masses of quantized vortices. We think that one can get unambiguous answers by considering a broken symmetry state that consists of one vortex in an infinite ideal system. We argue for a Magnus force that is proportional to the superfluid density, and we find that the effective mass density of a vortex in a neutral superfluid is divergent at low frequencies. We have generalized some of the results for a neutral superfluid to a charged system.

Abstract:At the interface between two fluid layers in relative motion, infinitesimal fluctuations can be exponentially amplified, inducing vorticity and the breakdown of laminar flow. While shear flow instabilities in classical fluids have been extensively observed in various contexts, controlled experiments in the presence of quantized circulation are quite rare. Here we observe how the contact interface between two counter-rotating atomic superflows develops into an ordered circular array of quantized vortices, which loses stability and rolls up into vortex clusters. We extract the instability growth rates and find that they obey the same scaling relations across different superfluid regimes, ranging from weakly interacting bosonic to strongly correlated fermionic pair condensates. Our results establish connections between vortex arrays and shear flow instabilities, suggesting a possible interpretation of the observed quantized vortex dynamics as a manifestation of the underlying unstable flow. Moreover, they open the way for exploring out-of-equilibrium phenomena such as vortex matter phase transitions and the spontaneous emergence and decay of two-dimensional quantum turbulence.

Abstract:We have theoretically investigated the structure of spinning self-bound droplets made of a K41−Rb87 Bose mixture by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation including beyond-mean-field correction in the Lee-Huang-Yang form. The structure and energetics of vortex formation in the self-bound mixture have been elucidated, showing that the formation of linear vortices in the heavier species is energetically favored over other configurations. A fake (partially filled) core develops as a consequence in the other species, resulting in a hole which might be imaged in experiments. We computed the minimal size of K41−Rb87 droplets which can host stable vortex lines in their interior, which is important information for experiments aimed at the observation of vortices in such systems. The different role of quantized vortices and capillary waves, which are the two ways angular momentum can be stored in a swirling superfluid, is addressed in detail by computing the relation between angular momentum and rotational frequency. The results show intriguing similarities with the case of a prototypical superfluid, i.e., He4 droplets when set into rotation. A two-branches curve in the stability diagram, qualitatively similar to the one expected for classical (incompressible and viscous) rotating liquid droplets, is obtained when vortices are present in the droplets, while prolate (i.e., nonaxisymmetric) shapes are only permitted in vortex-free droplets. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.105.063328 ©2022 American Physical Society
Universal Dynamical Scaling of Two-Dimensional Vortices in a Strongly Interacting Fermionic Superfluid

Abstract:Dynamical formulation and annihilation of vortices play a key role in the celebrated Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) theory, a universal topological mechanism describing exotic states of matter in low dimensions. Here we study the annihilation dynamics of a large number of vortices and anti-vortices generated by thermally quenching a Fermionic superfluid of $^6$Li atoms in an oblate optical geometry. Universal algebraic scaling laws in both time and space are experimentally revealed over a wide interaction range, from the attractive to the repulsive side across the Feshbach resonance, and further found to agree with a Glauber dynamics in Monte Carlo simulation of the classical XY model and with field-theoretical calculations. Our work provides a direct demonstration of the universal vortex dynamics underlying the BKT theory.

Abstract:We characterize the dynamical instability responsible for the breakdown of regular rows and necklaces of quantized vortices that appear at the interface between two superfluids in relative motion. Making use of a generalized point-vortex model, we identify several mechanisms leading to the suppression of this instability. They include a non-zero mass of the vortex cores, dissipative processes resulting from the interaction between the vortices and the excitations of the superfluid, and the proximity of the vortex array to the sample boundaries. We show that massive vortex cores not only have a mitigating effect on the dynamical instability, but also change the associated scaling law and affect the direction along which it develops. The predictions of our massive and dissipative point-vortex model are eventually compared against recent experimental measurements of the maximum instability growth rate relevant to vortex necklaces in a cold-atom platform.

Abstract:Due to the spin-orbit coupling, Dirac fermions, submerged in a thermal bath with finite macroscopic vorticity, exhibit a spin polarisation along the direction parallel to the vorticity vector $\boldsymbol{\Omega}$. Due to the symmetries of the Lagrangian for free massless Dirac particles, there are three independent and classically conserved currents corresponding to the vector, axial, and helical charges. The constitutive relations for the charge currents and the stress-energy tensor at thermal equilibrium, derived in the framework of quantum field theory at finite temperature, reveal vorticity-induced contributions that deviate from the perfect fluid form. In this paper, we consider the mode structure of the corresponding hydrodynamical theory and derive collective excitations associated with coherent fluctuations of all three charges. We show that the chirally imbalanced rotating fluid should possess non-reciprocal gapless waves that propagate with different velocities along and opposite to the vorticity vector. We also uncover a strictly unidirectional mode, which we call the Axial Vortical Wave, propagating in the background of the axial charge density. We point out an unexpected instability in the limit of degenerate matter and discuss possible solutions when helicity and axial charge non-conservation is taken into account.

Interactions and Reconnections of Four-Dimensional Quantum Vortices

Abstract:Interactions and reconnections of vortices are fundamental in many areas of physics, including classical and quantum fluids where they are central to understanding phenomena such as turbulence. In three-dimensional (3D) superfluids, quantum vortices are one-dimensional (1D) filaments that can intersect, reconnect, and recoil with irreversible dynamics described by near-universal scaling laws. We explore quantum-vortex reconnections in a four-dimensional (4D) superfluid, where a vortex is a two-dimensional (2D) surface. Using real-time numerical simulations, we find much richer behaviour than in 3D, including stable intersecting vortex surfaces which do not reconnect, and unusual vortex reconnections which occur without significant energy dissipation, suggesting quasi-reversible dynamics. Our work raises many interesting questions about vortex physics in extra-dimensional systems, and may be extended in the future to more realistic experimental settings where the fourth dimension is simulated with techniques such as synthetic dimensions.

This process, known as the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, is responsible for many familiar phenomena observed in the atmosphere and in the oceans, as well as in astrophysical objects, being known as one of the paradigmatic routes to turbulence in fluid mechanics. While shear-flow instabilities in classical fluids have been extensively observed in various contexts, controlled experiments in the presence of quantized circulation are comparatively very few. Here, we engineer two counter-rotating atomic superflows, a configuration that in classical inviscid fluids is unstable via the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We observe how the contact interface, i.e. the shear layer, develops into an ordered circular array of quantized vortices, which loses stability and rolls up into vortex clusters. We extract the instability growth rates and find that they obey the same scaling relations across different superfluid regimes, ranging from weakly-interacting bosonic to strongly-correlated fermionic pair condensates. The measured scalings, reproduced by numerical simulations and well described by a microscopic point-vortex model, are consistent with the classical hydrodynamic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of a finite-width shear layer. Our results establish interesting connections between vortex arrays and shear-flow instabilities, suggesting a possible interpretation of the observed quantized vortex dynamics as a manifestation of the underlying unstable flow. Signature of Andreev-Bashkin superfluid drag from Cavity Optomechanics

Abstract:The Andreev-Bashkin (AB) effect, corresponding to the dissipationless dragging of one superfluid by another, was predicted almost fifty years ago but has so far eluded experimental detection. In this work, we theoretically introduce an entirely new detection paradigm to this quest, and show that it enables the observation of the hitherto undetected AB effect for realistic parameters. We accomplish this by using the powerful techniques of cavity optomechanics, which were crucial to the observation of gravitational waves, on a spinor ring Bose-Einstein condensate. In contrast to all known AB detection methods, our scheme allows for real-time, \textit{in situ}, minimally destructive and three orders-of-magnitude more sensitive measurement of the AB effect. Our proposal, which considers persistent currents in weakly repulsive atomic condensates, and amplifies the AB signal using a novel dynamic Bragg spectroscopy technique, is supported by numerical simulations of the stochastic Gross-Pitaevski equation, which agree very well with our analytic Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations. Our work suggests a novel tool for sensitively and nondestructively probing the dynamics of rotationally interacting superfluids using cavities and has fundamental implications for ongoing studies of superfluid hydrodynamics, atomtronics, matter-wave interferometry, and cavity optomechanical sensing.

Superdiffusion of vortices in two-component quantum fluids of light

Abstract:The quantum diffusion of a vortex in a two-component quantum fluid of light is investigated. In these systems, the Kerr nonlinearity promotes interactions between the photons, displaying features that are analogue of a Bose-Einstein condensates. Quantum fluids of light have the advantage of simulating matter-wave phenomena at room temperatures. While the analogy is true at the mean field level, the full quantum dynamics of an impurity in quantum fluids of light of, and therefore the ability of featuring genuine quantum noise, has never been considered. We numerically solve the problem by simulating a vortex-like impurity in the presence of noise with the Bogoliubov spectral density, and show that the vortex undergoes superdiffusion. We support our results with a theory that has been previously developed for the brownian motion of point-like particles.

Abstract:Starting from the Bogolubov–de Gennes equations for superconductor with an arbitrary anisotropic Fermi surface we derive the Andreev-type theory accounting for the quasiparticle trajectory interference and corresponding nonquasiclassical quantization effects. The resulting Andreev equations are applied for the analysis of the subgap quasiparticle states localized at the pinned vortex cores. The normal reflection of electrons and holes at the defects is shown to result in the qualitative transformation of the subgap spectra and formation of new types of bound quasiparticle states. We focus on the effect of the Fermi surface anisotropy on the quasiparticle spectral properties including opening of soft and hard minigaps in the spectrum and spatial behavior of the local density of states around pinned vortex cores.

Abstract:Vortices play a leading role in many fascinating quantum phenomena. Here we generate a large number of vortices by thermally quenching a fermionic superfluid of ^{6}Li atoms in an oblate optical trap and study their annihilation dynamics and spatial distribution. Over a wide interaction range from the attractive to the repulsive side across the Feshbach resonance, these quasi-two-dimensional vortices are observed to follow algebraic scaling laws both in time and space, having exponents consistent with the two-dimensional universality. We further simulate the classical XY model on the square lattice by a Glauber dynamics and find good agreement between the numerical and experimental behaviors. Our work provides a direct demonstration of the universal 2D vortex dynamics.

Abstract:There is a close analogy between the dynamics of electrons in a strong magnetic field and the dynamics of quantized vortices in superfluids and superconductors. In both systems an important part is played by a term in the Lagrangian linear in velocity that corresponds to a Berry phase in the quantum theory. This Berry phase can be calculated from the usual trial wave function for a vortex. This has important consequences for quantum tunneling of vortices, and leads unambiguously to the form of the Magnus force in a superconductor.

Abstract:Quantized vortices are the hallmark of superfluidity, and are often sought out as the first observable feature in new superfluid systems. Following the recent experimental observation of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates comprised of atoms with inherent long-range dipole-dipole interactions [Nat. Phys. 18, 1453-1458 (2022)], we thoroughly investigate vortex properties in the three-dimensional dominantly dipolar regime, where beyond-mean-field effects are crucial for stability, and investigate the interplay between trap geometry and magnetic field tilt angle.

Under the adiabatic approximation, we use semiclassical Lagrangian formalism to describe the system and found that in addition to the universal background “magnetic field” which results in the Magnus force, there exists a new interaction mediated by the density profile of the background fluid due to its finite compressibility. Finally, numerical solutions from the nonlinear Schrodinger equation were employed to gain better insight into this problem. Abstract:We experimentally and numerically study the collapse dynamics of a quantum vortex in a two-dimensional atomic superfluid following a fast interaction ramp from repulsion to attraction. We find the conditions and time scales for a superfluid vortex to radially converge into a quasi-stationary density profile, demonstrating the first spontaneous formation of a vortex soliton in an atomic Bose gas. We record an emergent universal dynamics of an azimuthal modulational instability, which amplifies initial density perturbations and leads to the eventual splitting of a vortex soliton or direct fragmentation of a superfluid into disordered, but roughly circular arrays of Townes soliton-like wavepackets. Our study sets the stage for exploring universal out-of-equilibrium dynamics of vortex quantum matter quenched to attractive interactions.

Relative dynamics of quantum vortices and massive cores in binary BECs

Abstract:We study the motion of superfluid vortices with filled massive cores. Previous point-vortex models already pointed out the impact of the core mass on the vortex dynamical properties, but relied on an assumption that is questionable in many physical systems where the immiscibility condition is barely satisfied: the fact that the massive core always lays at the very bottom of the effective confining potential constituted by the hosting vortex. Here, we relax this assumption and present a new point-vortex model where quantum vortices are harmonically coupled to their massive cores. We thoroughly explore the new dynamical regimes offered by this improved model; we then show that the functional dependence of the system normal modes on the microscopic parameters can be correctly interpreted only within this new generalized framework. Our predictions are benchmarked against the numerical simulations of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations for a realistic mixture of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates.

Making ghost vortices visible in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract:Ghost vortices constitute an elusive class of topological excitations in quantum fluids since the relevant phase singularities fall within regions where the superfluid density is almost zero. Here we present a platform that allows for the controlled generation and observation of such vortices. Upon rotating an imbalanced mixture of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), one can obtain necklaces of real vortices in the majority component whose cores get filled by particles from the minority one. The wavefunction describing the state of the latter is shown to harbour a number of ghost vortices which are crucial to support the overall dynamics of the mixture. Their arrangement typically mirrors that of their real counterpart, hence resulting in a ``dual" ghost-vortex necklace, whose properties are thoroughly investigated in the present paper. We also present a viable experimental protocol for the direct observation of ghost vortices in a ${}^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ $+$ ${}^{39}\mathrm{K}$ ultracold mixture. Quenching the inter-component scattering length, some atoms are expelled from the vortex cores and, while diffusing, swirl around unpopulated phase singularities, thus turning them directly observable.
