Abstract:We review the construction of ("free") elementary systems in de Sitter (dS) spacetime, in the Wigner sense, as associated with unitary irreducible representations (UIR's) of the dS (relativity) group. This study emphasizes the conceptual issues arising in the formulation of such systems and discusses known results in a mathematically rigorous way. Particular attention is paid to: "smooth" transition from classical to quantum theory; physical content under vanishing curvature, from the point of view of a local ("tangent") Minkowskian observer; and thermal interpretation (on the quantum level), in the sense of the Gibbons-Hawking temperature. We review three decompositions of the dS group physically relevant for the description of dS spacetime and classical phase spaces of elementary systems living on it. We review the construction of (projective) dS UIR's issued from these group decompositions. (Projective) Hilbert spaces carrying the UIR's (in some restricted sense) identify quantum ("one-particle") states spaces of dS elementary systems. Adopting a well-established Fock procedure, based on the Wightman-Gärding axioms and on analyticity requirements in the complexified Riemannian manifold, we proceed with a consistent quantum field theory (QFT) formulation of elementary systems in dS spacetime. This dS QFT formulation closely parallels the corresponding Minkowskian one, while the usual spectral condition is replaced by a certain geometric Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition equivalent to a precise thermal manifestation of the associated "vacuum" states.

A representation-theoretical approach to higher-dimensional Lie--Hamilton systems: The symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}(4, \mathbb{R})$

Abstract:A new procedure for the construction of higher-dimensional Lie-Hamilton systems is proposed. This method is based on techniques belonging to the representation theory of Lie algebras and their realization by vector fields. The notion of intrinsic Lie-Hamilton system is defined, and a sufficiency criterion for this property given. Novel four-dimensional Lie-Hamilton systems arising from the fundamental representation of the symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}(4, \mathbb{R})$ are obtained and proved to be intrinsic. Two distinguished subalgebras, the two-photon Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}_{6}$ and the Lorentz Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(1,3)$, are also considered in detail. As applications, coupled time-dependent systems which generalize the Bateman oscillator and the one-dimensional Caldirola-Kanai models are constructed, as well as systems depending on a time-dependent electromagnetic field and generalized coupled oscillators. A superposition rule for these systems, exhibiting interesting symmetry properties, is obtained using the coalgebra method.

Abstract:The relative geodesic motion in central charts (i.e. static and spherically symmetric) on the $(1+3)$-dimensional de Sitter spacetimes is studied in terms of conserved quantities. The Lorentzian isometries are derived, relating the coordinates of the local chart of a fixed observer with the coordinates of a mobile chart considered as the rest frame of a massive paticle freely moving on a timelike geodesic. The time dilation and Lorentz contraction are discussed pointing out some notable features of the de Sitter relativity in central charts.

Abstract:We develop the description of non-commutative geometry of the 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid's theory proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The non-commutative structure of fuzzy S4, which is the base of the bundle S7 obtained by the second Hopf fibration, i.e., S7/S3=S4, appears naturally in this theory. The fuzzy monopole harmonics, which are the essential elements in the non-commutative algebra of functions on S4, are explicitly constructed and their obeying the matrix algebra is obtained. This matrix algebra is associative. We also propose a fusion scheme of the fuzzy monopole harmonics of the coupling system from those of the subsystems, and determine the fusion rule in such fusion scheme. By products, we provide some essential ingredients of the theory of SO(5) angular momentum. In particular, the explicit expression of the coupling coefficients, in the theory of SO(5) angular momentum, are given. We also discuss some possible applications of our results to the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system and the matrix brane construction in M-theory.
4D de Sitter from String Theory via 6D Supergravity

Abstract:We obtain de Sitter (dS) solutions from controlled string-theory constructions. We review how minimal gauged chiral 6D supergravity evades standard dS no-go theorems by having a positive scalar potential and describe the known 4D classical dS, AdS and Minkowski solutions. Grimm and collaborators recently found a related 6D supergravity by direct F-theory Calabi-Yau flux compactifications and we construct classical 4D maximally symmetric solutions for this 6D supergravity. These provide explicit solutions of the higher-dimensional field equations corresponding to dS, AdS and flat spacetimes in 4D, allowing interesting hierarchies of scales. We show how the singularities of these solutions are consistent with the back-reaction of two space-filling 4D brane-like sources situated within the extra dimensions and infer some of the properties of these sources using the formalism of point particle effective field theory (PPEFT), showing the sources are not vanilla objects like D branes. These tools relate the near-source asymptotic forms of bulk fields to source properties and have been extensively tested for more prosaic physical systems involving the back-reaction of small sources, such as the dependence of atomic energy levels on nuclear properties. We use it to determine the tension of the brane-like sources (that can be positive) and its derivatives. We verify that the solutions are in the weak coupling/large volume regime required to neglect quantum and $\alpha'$ effects.

Abstract:Our main goal here is to provide an introduction on some of the well established properties of the representation theory of SO(d+1,1), for those considering to think on physical problems set in de Sitter space in terms of these representations. With this purpose we review two intertwining maps, the map G that is used in constructing a well defined inner product for the complementary series representations and the map Q that is involved in constructing composite representations. We give explicit examples from the late-time boundary of de Sitter on the practical use of the complementary series inner product and in building a tensor product representation from unitary principal series irreducible representations.

Abstract:Theories of gravity based on teleparallel geometries are characterized by the torsion, which is a function of the coframe, derivatives of the coframe, and a zero curvature and metric compatible spin connection. The appropriate notion of a symmetry in a teleparallel geometry is that of an affine symmetry. Due to the importance of the de Sitter geometry and Einstein spaces within general relativity, we shall describe teleparallel de Sitter geometries and discuss their possible generalizations. In particular, we shall analyse a class of Einstein teleparallel geometries which have a 4-dimensional Lie algebra of affine symmetries, and display two one-parameter families of explicit exact solutions.

Abstract:The canonical formalism of the (2+2) formulation of general relativity of 4 spacetime dimensions is studied under no symmetry assumptions, where the spacetime is viewed as a local product of a 2 dimensional base manifold of Lorentzian signature with the vertical space as its complement. The affine null parameter is chosen as the time coordinate whose level surfaces are 3 dimensional spacelike hypersurfaces. From the first-order action principle, Hamilton's equations of motion and the constraints are obtained, which are found to be equivalent to the Einstein's equations. The constraint algebra is also presented, which has interesting subalgebras such as the infinite dimensional Lie algebra of the diffeomorphisms of the 2 dimensional vertical space, infinite dimensional Virasoro algebra associated with the 2 dimensional base manifold, and an analog of supertranslation. The symmetry algebra may be viewed as a generalization of the BMS or Spi group to a finite distance.

Fermionic Shift Symmetries in (Anti) de Sitter Space

Abstract:We study extended shift symmetries that arise for fermionic fields on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and de Sitter (dS) space for particular values of the mass relative to the curvature scale. We classify these symmetries for general mixed-symmetry fermionic fields in arbitrary dimension and describe how fields with these symmetries arise as the decoupled longitudinal modes of massive fermions as they approach partially massless points. For the particular case of AdS$_4$, we look for non-trivial Lie superalgebras that can underly interacting theories that involve these fields. We study from this perspective the minimal such theory, the Akulov--Volkov theory on AdS$_4$, which is a non-linear theory of a spin-$1/2$ Goldstino field that describes the spontaneous breaking of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry on AdS$_4$ down to the isometries of AdS$_4$. We show how to write the nonlinear supersymmetry transformation for this theory using the fermionic ambient space formalism. We also study the Lie superalgebras of candidate multi-field examples and rule out the existence of a supersymmetric special galileon on AdS$_4$.

Abstract:The group $S_4$ of permutations on four elements has an irreducible representation corresponding to the partition 4=2+2. This representation appears in several different mathematical contexts: the Jacobi identity of Lie algebras; the Schouten identity for spinors; differences and the cross ratio in the projective plane; the Grassmannian space of 2-planes in linear algebra; the Riemann tensor in differential geometry; and more. We observe that all these occurrences are connected through perturbative non-abelian gauge theory, thereby acting as a leitmotif.

Hilbert space of Quantum Field Theory in de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:We study the decomposition of the Hilbert space of quantum field theory in $(d+1)$ dimensional de Sitter spacetime into Unitary Irreducible Representations (UIRs) of its isometry group \SO$(1,d+1)$. Firstly, we consider multi-particle states in free theories starting from the tensor product of single-particle UIRs. Secondly, we study conformal multiplets of a bulk Conformal Field Theory with symmetry group \SO$(2,d+1)$. Our main tools are the Harish-Chandra characters and the numerical diagonalization of the (truncated) quadratic Casimir of \SO$(1,d+1)$. We introduce a continuous density that encodes the spectrum of irreducible representations contained in a reducible one of $\SO(1,d+1)$. Our results are complete for $d=1$ and $d=2$. In higher dimensions, we rederive and extend several results previously known in the literature. Our work provides the foundation for future nonperturbative bootstrap studies of Quantum Field Theory in de Sitter spacetime.

Abstract:Scalar unitary representations of the isometry group of $d$-dimensional de Sitter space $SO(1,d)$ are labeled by their conformal weights $\Delta$. A salient feature of de Sitter space is that scalar fields with sufficiently large mass compared to the de Sitter scale $1/\ell$ have complex conformal weights, and physical modes of these fields fall into the unitary continuous principal series representation of $SO(1,d)$. Our goal is to study these representations in $d=2$, where the relevant group is $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. We show that the generators of the isometry group of dS$_2$ acting on a massive scalar field reproduce the quantum mechanical model introduced by de Alfaro, Fubini and Furlan (DFF) in the early/late time limit. Motivated by the ambient dS$_2$ construction, we review in detail how the DFF model must be altered in order to accommodate the principal series representation. We point out a difficulty in writing down a classical Lagrangian for this model, whereas the canonical Hamiltonian formulation avoids any problem. We speculate on the meaning of the various de Sitter invariant vacua from the point of view of this toy model and discuss some potential generalizations.

Abstract:We construct firstly the complete list of five quantum deformations of $D=4$ complex homogeneous orthogonal Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})\cong \mathfrak{o}(3;\mathbb{C})\oplus \mathfrak{o}(3;\mathbb{C})$, describing quantum rotational symmetry of four-dimensional complex space-time, in particular we provide the corresponding universal quantum $R$-matrices. Further applying four possible reality conditions we obtain all sixteen Hopf-algebraic quantum deformations for the real forms of $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$: Euclidean $\mathfrak{o}(4)$, Lorentz $\mathfrak{o}(3,1)$, Kleinian $\mathfrak{o}(2,2)$ and quaternionic $\mathfrak{o}^{\star}(4)$. For $\mathfrak{o}(3,1)$ we only recall well-known results obtained previously by the authors, but for other real Lie algebras (Euclidean, Kleinian, quaternionic) as well as for the complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$ we present new results.

Abstract:Using a recently developed formulation of double field theory in superspace, the graviton, $B$-field, gravitini, dilatini, and Ramond-Ramond bispinor are encoded in a single generalized supervielbein. Duality transformations are encoded as orthosymplectic transformations, extending the bosonic $O(D,D)$ duality group, and these act on all constituents of the supervielbein in an easily computable way. We first review conventional non-abelian T-duality in the Green-Schwarz superstring and describe the dual geometries in the language of double superspace. Since dualities are related to super-Killing vectors, this includes as special cases both abelian and non-abelian fermionic T-duality. We then extend this approach to include Poisson-Lie T-duality and its generalizations, including the generalized coset construction recently discussed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1912.11036" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1912.11036">arXiv:1912.11036</a>. As an application, we construct the supergeometries associated with the integrable $\lambda$ and $\eta$ deformations of the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ superstring. The deformation parameters $\lambda$ and $\eta$ are identified with the possible one-parameter embeddings of the supergravity frame within the doubled supergeometry. In this framework, the Ramond-Ramond bispinors are directly computable purely from the algebraic data of the supergroup.

The anti-de Sitter supergeometry revisited

Abstract:In a supergravity framework, the $\cal N$-extended anti-de Sitter (AdS) superspace in four spacetime dimensions, $\text{AdS}^{4|4\cal N} $, is a maximally symmetric background that is described by a curved superspace geometry with structure group $\mathsf{SL}(2, \mathbb{C}) \times \mathsf{U}({\cal N})$. On the other hand, within the group-theoretic setting, $\text{AdS}^{4|4{\cal N}} $ is realised as the coset superspace $\mathsf{OSp}(\cal{N}|4;\mathbb{R}) /\big[ \mathsf{SL}(2, \mathbb{C}) \times \mathsf{O}(\cal{N}) \big]$, with its structure group being $\mathsf{SL}(2, \mathbb{C}) \times \mathsf{O}({\cal N})$. Here we explain how the two frameworks are related. We give explicit realisations of $\text{AdS}^{4|4{\cal N}} $ as a conformally flat superspace, thus extending the ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ results available in the literature. As applications, we describe: (i) the $\kappa$-symmetric action for a superparticle in $\text{AdS}^{4|4{\cal N}} $; and (ii) some implications of conformal flatness in the ${\cal N}=2$ case.

Hilbert Schemes of Points in the Plane and Quasi-Lisse Vertex Algebras with $\mathcal{N}=4$ Symmetry

Abstract:To each complex reflection group $\Gamma$ one can attach a canonical symplectic singularity $\mathcal{M}_\Gamma$ <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/9903070" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/9903070">arXiv:math/9903070</a>. Motivated by the 4D/2D duality <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1312.5344" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.5344">arXiv:1312.5344</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1707.07679" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1707.07679">arXiv:1707.07679</a>, Bonetti, Meneghelli and Rastelli <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1810.03612" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1810.03612">arXiv:1810.03612</a> conjectured the existence of a supersymmetric vertex operator superalgebra $\mathsf{W}_\Gamma$ whose associated variety is isomorphic to $\mathcal{M}_\Gamma$. We prove this conjecture when the complex reflection group $\Gamma$ is the symmetric group $S_N$ by constructing a sheaf of $\hbar$-adic vertex operator superalgebras on the Hilbert scheme of $N$ points in the plane. For that case, we also show the free-field realisation of $\mathsf{W}_\Gamma$ in terms of $\operatorname{rk}(\Gamma)$ many $\beta\gamma bc$-systems proposed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1810.03612" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1810.03612">arXiv:1810.03612</a>, and identify the character of $\mathsf{W}_\Gamma$ as a certain quasimodular form of mixed weight and multiple $q$-zeta value. In physical terms, the vertex operator superalgebra $\mathsf{W}_{S_N}$ constructed in this article corresponds via the 4D/2D duality <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1312.5344" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.5344">arXiv:1312.5344</a> to the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $\operatorname{SL}_N$.

A Universal Kinematical Group for Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:In 1968, Dashen and Sharp obtained a certain singular Lie algebra of local densities and currents from canonical commutation relations in nonrelativistic quantum field theory. The corresponding Lie group is infinite dimensional: the natural semidirect product of an additive group of scalar functions with a group of diffeomorphisms. Unitary representations of this group describe a wide variety of quantum systems, and have predicted previously unsuspected possibilities; notably, anyons and nonabelian anyons in two space dimensions. We present here foundational reasons why this semidirect product group serves as a universal kinematical group for quantum mechanics. We obtain thus a unified account of all possible quantum kinematics for systems with mass in an arbitrary physical space, and clarify the role played by topology in quantum mechanics. Our development does not require quantization of classical phase space; rather, the classical limit follows from the quantum mechanics. We also consider the relationship of our development to Heisenberg quantization.

Quantum fields on projective geometries

Abstract:Considering homogeneous four-dimensional space-time geometries within real projective geometry provides a mathematically well-defined framework to discuss their deformations and limits without the appearance of coordinate singularities. On Lie algebra level the related conjugacy limits act isomorphically to concatenations of contractions. We axiomatically introduce projective quantum fields on homogeneous space-time geometries, based on correspondingly generalized unitary transformation behavior and projectivization of the field operators. Projective correlators and their expectation values remain well-defined in all geometry limits, which includes their ultraviolet and infrared limits. They can degenerate with support on space-time boundaries and other lower-dimensional space-time subspaces. We explore fermionic and bosonic superselection sectors as well as the irreducibility of projective quantum fields. Dirac fermions appear, which obey spin-statistics as composite quantum fields. The framework systematically formalizes and generalizes the ambient space techniques regularly employed in conformal field theory.

de Sitter State in Heterotic String Theory

Abstract:Recent no-go theorems have ruled out four-dimensional classical de Sitter vacua in heterotic string theory. On the other hand, the absence of a well-defined Wilsonian effective action and other related phenomena also appear to rule out such time-dependent vacua with de Sitter isometries, even in the presence of quantum corrections. In this note, we argue that a four-dimensional de Sitter space can still exist in SO(32) heterotic string theory as a Glauber-Sudarshan state, i.e. as a coherent state, over a supersymmetric Minkowski background, albeit within a finite temporal domain. Borel resummation and resurgence play a crucial role in constructing such a state in the Hilbert space of heterotic theory governed entirely by the IR degrees of freedom.

Abstract:We derive manifestly covariant actions of spinning particles starting from coadjoint orbits of isometry groups, by using Hamiltonian reductions. We show that the defining conditions of a classical Lie group can be treated as Hamiltonian constraints which generate the coadjoint orbits of another, dual , Lie group. In case of (inhomogeneous) orthogonal groups, the dual groups are (centrally-extended inhomogeneous) symplectic groups. This defines a symplectic dual pair correspondence between the coadjoint orbits of the isometry group and those of the dual Lie group, whose quantum version is the reductive dual pair correspondence à la Howe. We show explicitly how various particle species arise from the classification of coadjoint orbits of Poincaré and (A)dS symmetry. In the Poincaré case, we recover the data of the Wigner classification, which includes continuous spin particles, (spinning) tachyons and null particles with vanishing momenta, besides the usual massive and massless spinning particles. In (A)dS case, our classification results are not only consistent with the pattern of the corresponding unitary irreducible representations observed in the literature, but also contain novel information. In dS, we find the presence of partially massless spinning particles, but continuous spin particles, spinning tachyons and null particles are absent. The AdS case shows the largest diversity of particle species. It has all particles species of Poincaré symmetry except for the null particle, but allows in addition various exotic entities such as one parameter extension of continuous particles and conformal particles living on the boundary of AdS. Notably, we also find a large class of particles living in "bitemporal" AdS space, including ones where mass and spin play an interchanged role. We also discuss the relative inclusion structure of the corresponding orbits.
