Abstract:We investigate a generalization of topological order from closed systems to open systems, for which the steady states take the place of ground states. We construct typical lattice models with steady-state topological order, and characterize them by complementary approaches based on topological degeneracy of steady states, topological entropy, and dissipative gauge theory. Whereas the (Liouvillian) level splitting between topologically degenerate steady states is exponentially small with respect to the system size, the Liouvillian gap between the steady states and the rest of the spectrum decays algebraically as the system size grows, and closes in the thermodynamic limit. It is shown that steady-state topological order remains definable in the presence of (Liouvillian) gapless modes. The topological phase transition to the trivial phase, where the topological degeneracy is lifted, is accompanied by gapping out the gapless modes. Our work offers a toolbox for investigating open-system topology of steady states.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper attempts to explore how to extend topological order from closed systems to open systems, particularly in achieving topological order in steady states. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following core issues: 1. **Definition of Topological Order in Open Systems**: - In closed systems, topological order can be characterized by features such as ground state topological degeneracy, topological entropy, and non-local gauge fields. However, in open systems, these features may change due to environmental influences. The paper attempts to define steady-state topological order in open systems and explore its differences from ground state topological order in closed systems. 2. **Topological Degeneracy of Steady States**: - The paper constructs typical lattice models with topologically degenerate steady states and characterizes these models through various methods (such as topological degeneracy, topological entropy, and dissipative gauge theory). The study finds that although the Liouvillian spectral gap vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, the topological degeneracy of steady states can still be defined. 3. **Topological Phase Transition**: - The paper explores the process of topological phase transition from a topologically ordered phase to a trivial phase. In the topologically ordered phase, the topological degeneracy of steady states is maintained, while in the trivial phase, the topological degeneracy is lifted. Additionally, the topological phase transition is accompanied by the opening of gapless modes. 4. **Topological Degeneracy in Different Dimensions**: - The paper studies models that achieve steady-state topological degeneracy on 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional tori. The results show that topological degeneracy in 2-dimensional systems is relatively fragile, while topological degeneracy in 3-dimensional and higher-dimensional systems is more stable. 5. **Relationship Between Topological Degeneracy and System Relaxation Time**: - The paper also explores the relationship between topological degeneracy and system relaxation time. The study finds that topological degeneracy is always accompanied by long relaxation times, which usually implies the disappearance of the Liouvillian spectral gap. ### Summary By constructing and analyzing specific models, this paper systematically studies the topological order of steady states in open systems. The paper not only provides definitions and characterization methods for steady-state topological order but also reveals the behavioral characteristics of topological order under different dimensions and conditions, providing important theoretical tools for understanding topological phenomena in open quantum systems.
