Abstract:Spiral spin liquids are correlated states of matter in which a frustrated magnetic system evades order by fluctuating between a set of (nearly) degenerate spin spirals. Here, we investigate the response of spiral spin liquids to quenched disorder in a $J_1$-$J_2$ honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg model. At the single-impurity level, we identify different order-by-quenched-disorder phenomena and analyze the ensuing spin textures. In particular, we show that the latter generally display Friedel-like oscillations, which encode direct information about the spiral contour, i.e., the classical ground-state manifold. At finite defect concentrations, we perform extensive numerical simulations and characterize the resulting phases at zero temperature. As a result, we find that the competition between incompatible order-by-quenched-disorder mechanisms can lead to spiral spin glass states already at low to moderate disorder. Finally, we discuss extensions of our conclusions to nonzero temperatures and higher-dimensional systems, as well as their applications to experiments.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the influence of introducing quenched disorder in spiral spin liquids (SSLs). Specifically, the author studied the response of spiral spin liquids to quenched disorder in the J1 - J2 honeycomb lattice Heisenberg model. The main focuses include: 1. **The influence of a single impurity**: At the single - impurity level, the author identified different ordering mechanisms caused by quenched disorder and analyzed the resulting spin textures. In particular, they showed that these spin textures usually exhibit phenomena similar to Friedel - like oscillations, which directly encode the information of the spiral profile (i.e., the classical ground - state manifold). 2. **The influence of a finite defect concentration**: At a finite defect concentration, the author carried out extensive numerical simulations to characterize the phase diagram at zero temperature. The results show that the competition between different ordering mechanisms may lead to the formation of a spiral spin - glass state under low - to - medium - disorder conditions. 3. **Extended discussion**: The author also discussed the extension of these conclusions in non - zero - temperature and high - dimensional systems, as well as their applications in experiments. ### Main research content - **Single - impurity effect**: - Use perturbative analytical techniques to study the ordering mechanisms caused by different types of impurities (such as bond defects and vacancies). - Determine the spin textures induced by weak defects at zero temperature through linear response theory, and find that these textures are usually non - coplanar and their vertical components decay in space, similar to Friedel - like oscillations. - Analyze the long - distance behavior of the in - plane components caused by different bond defects (nearest - neighbor and next - nearest - neighbor) and vacancies. - **Physics of defects with a finite concentration**: - Conduct numerical simulations to determine the classical ground - state of finite - size systems under different types of disorder conditions. - Identify two different mechanisms that destroy long - range magnetic order: one is short - range order caused by interference between different textures; the other is a more serious consequence caused by the competition between incompatible ordering mechanisms, such as entering the spin - glass phase at low - to - medium - defect concentrations. ### Research background - **Spiral spin liquids (SSLs)**: This is a correlated paramagnetic state in which a frustrated magnetic system avoids ordering by fluctuating between a set of (almost) degenerate spin spirals. - **Quenched disorder**: Refers to fixed random defects in the system, such as impurities or vacancies, which introduce local disorder. - **J1 - J2 model**: A classical Heisenberg model that contains nearest - neighbor (J1) and next - nearest - neighbor (J2) interactions and is used to describe frustrated magnetic systems. ### Conclusions - **Single - impurity effect**: Impurities of different types and orientations will lead to different ordering mechanisms and spin textures. - **Defects with a finite concentration**: The competition between different ordering mechanisms may lead to the emergence of a spiral spin - glass state, which has already emerged under low - to - medium - disorder conditions. - **Extended discussion**: These results are of great significance in non - zero - temperature and high - dimensional systems and provide guidance for experiments. ### Formula examples - **Spiral spin wave vector**: \[ \sin\theta_Q=\frac{\sin\Theta_1 + \sin\Theta_2}{\Lambda_Q}, \quad \cos\theta_Q=\frac{1+\cos\Theta_1+\cos\Theta_2}{\Lambda_Q}, \quad \Lambda_Q = \sqrt{3 + 2(\cos\Theta_1+\cos\Theta_2+\cos\Theta_3)} \] where \(\Theta_n = Q\cdot a_n\) is the projection of the wave vector \(Q\) on the primitive cell basis vectors \(a_1, a_2, a_3\). - **Static structure factor**: \[ S(k)=\frac{1}{N}\sum_{i,j}\sum_{\mu,\nu}e^{i k\cdot(r_{i\mu}-r_{j}}
