Abstract:We revisit a classic theorem of Frougny and Sakarovitch concerning automata for $\varphi$-representations, and show how to obtain it in a different and more computationally direct way. Using it, we can find simple, induction-free proofs of existing results in the literature about these representations, in a uniform and straightforward manner. In particular, we can easily and "automatically'' recover many of the results of recent papers of Dekking and Van Loon. We also obtain a number of new results on $\varphi$-representations.

Abstract:The Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse method for first-order logic and further logics relevant in descriptive complexity has been quite successful. However, for key problems such as P not equal NP or NP not equal co-NP no progress has been achieved using it. We show that for these problems we can not get the board for the corresponding Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse game in polynomial output time, even if we allow probabilistic methods to obtain the board. In order to get this result in the probabilistic case, we need an additional hypothesis, namely that there is an algorithm, the verifier, verifying in a reasonable time that the two structures of the board satisfy the same properties expressible in a suitable fragment of the logic. The (non) existence of such a verifier is related to a logic version of the planted clique conjecture.

Abstract:Walnut is a software that using automata can prove theorems in combinatorics on words about automatic sequences. We are able to apply this software to both prove new results as well as reprove some old results on avoiding squares and cubes in partial words. We also define the notion of an antisquare in a partial word and begin the study of binary partial words which contain only a fixed number of distinct squares and antisquares.

Abstract:Cryptographic primitives are fundamental for information security: they are used as basic components for cryptographic protocols or public-key cryptosystems. In many cases, their security proofs consist in showing that they are reducible to computationally hard problems. Those reductions can be subtle and tedious, and thus not easily checkable. On top of the proof assistant Coq, we had implemented in previous work a toolbox for writing and checking game-based security proofs of cryptographic primitives. In this paper we describe its extension with number-theoretic capabilities so that it is now possible to write and check arithmetic-based cryptographic primitives in our toolbox. We illustrate our work by machine checking the game-based proofs of unpredictability of the pseudo-random bit generator of Blum, Blum and Shub, and semantic security of the public-key cryptographic scheme of Goldwasser and Micali.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Bourn and Willenbring (2020) regarding the palindromicity and unimodality of certain polynomials $N_n(t)$. These polynomials arise as the numerators of generating functions in the context of the one-dimensional earth mover's distance (EMD). Our proof reveals a connection to recent work by Defant et al. (2023) on the Wiener index of minuscule lattices, which we reinterpret combinatorially to obtain explicit formulas for the coefficients of $N_n(t)$ and for the expected value of the EMD.

Abstract:The conjecture of Lehmer is proved to be true. The proof mainly relies upon: (i) the properties of the Parry Upper functions $f_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ associated with the dynamical zeta functions $\zeta_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ of the Rényi--Parry arithmetical dynamical systems, for $\alpha$ an algebraic integer $\alpha$ of house "$house(\alpha)$" greater than 1, (ii) the discovery of lenticuli of poles of $\zeta_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ which uniformly equidistribute at the limit on a limit "lenticular" arc of the unit circle, when $house(\alpha)$ tends to $1^+$, giving rise to a continuous lenticular minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(house(\alpha))$ of the Mahler measure ${\rm M}(\alpha)$, (iii) the Poincaré asymptotic expansions of these poles and of this minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(house(\alpha))$ as a function of the dynamical degree. With the same arguments the conjecture of Schinzel-Zassenhaus is proved to be true. An inequality improving those of Dobrowolski and Voutier ones is obtained. The set of Salem numbers is shown to be bounded from below by the Perron number $\theta_{31}^{-1} = 1.08545\ldots$, dominant root of the trinomial $-1 - z^{30} + z^{31}$. Whether Lehmer's number is the smallest Salem number remains open. A lower bound for the Weil height of nonzero totally real algebraic numbers, $\neq \pm 1$, is obtained (Bogomolov property). For sequences of algebraic integers of Mahler measure smaller than the smallest Pisot number, whose houses have a dynamical degree tending to infinity, the Galois orbit measures of conjugates are proved to converge towards the Haar measure on $|z|=1$ (limit equidistribution).

Abstract:In this paper, we present an explicit and analytic proof for still unproven Goldbach's strong conjecture. To derive this proof, we first define a heuristic model for representing even numbers called Semi-continuous Model for Even Numbers or briefly S.C.E Model, and then we employ this model along with using the inequality \begin{center} $\dfrac{x}{\ln x}\leq_{x\geq 17}\pi(x)\leq_{x>1}1.2251\dfrac{x}{\ln x}$, \end{center} where $\pi(x)$ denotes the number of all primes smaller than and equal to $x$, and is presented by Pierre Dusart in his paper [P. Dusart, \textit{Explicit estimates of some functions over primes}, Ramanujan J. \textbf{45} (2016), No. 1, 227--251]. On the one hand, this proof is given for all even numbers $E\geq22864$. On the other hand, since the assertion of Goldbach's strong conjecture is easy to verify for all even numbers $4\leq E<22864$, we turn this conjecture into a theorem.

Abstract:We show that interactive protocols between a prover and a verifier, a well-known tool of complexity theory, can be used in practice to certify the correctness of automated reasoning tools. Theoretically, interactive protocols exist for all $\textsf{PSPACE}$ problems. The verifier of a protocol checks the prover's answer to a problem instance in probabilistic polynomial time, with polynomially many bits of communication, and with exponentially small probability of error. (The prover may need exponential time.) Existing interactive protocols are not used in practice because their provers use naive algorithms, inefficient even for small instances, that are incompatible with practical implementations of automated reasoning. We bridge the gap between theory and practice by means of an interactive protocol whose prover uses BDDs. We consider the problem of counting the number of assignments to a QBF instance ($\#\textrm{CP}$), which has a natural BDD-based algorithm. We give an interactive protocol for $\#\textrm{CP}$ whose prover is implemented on top of an extended BDD library. The prover has only a linear overhead in computation time over the natural algorithm. We have implemented our protocol in $\textsf{blic}$, a certifying tool for $\#\textrm{CP}$. Experiments on standard QBF benchmarks show that $\textsf{blic}$ is competitive with state-of-the-art QBF-solvers. The run time of the verifier is negligible. While loss of absolute certainty can be concerning, the error probability in our experiments is at most $10^{-10}$ and reduces to $10^{-10k}$ by repeating the verification $k$ times.

Abstract:We show that any language solvable in nondeterministic time exp( exp(⋯exp( n ))), where the number of iterated exponentials is an arbitrary function R ( n ), can be decided by a multiprover interactive proof system with a classical polynomial-time verifier and a constant number of quantum entangled provers, with completeness 1 and soundness 1 − exp(− C exp(⋯exp( n ))), where the number of iterated exponentials is R ( n )−1 and C >0 is a universal constant. The result was previously known for R =1 and R =2; we obtain it for any time-constructible function R . The result is based on a compression technique for interactive proof systems with entangled provers that significantly simplifies and strengthens a protocol compression result of Ji (STOC’17). As a separate consequence of this technique we obtain a different proof of Slofstra’s recent result on the uncomputability of the entangled value of multiprover games (Forum of Mathematics, Pi 2019). Finally, we show that even minor improvements to our compression result would yield remarkable consequences in computational complexity theory and the foundations of quantum mechanics: first, it would imply that the class MIP* contains all computable languages; second, it would provide a negative resolution to a multipartite version of Tsirelson’s problem on the relation between the commuting operator and tensor product models for quantum correlations.

Abstract:Certain famous combinatorial sequences, such as the Catalan numbers and the Motzkin numbers, when taken modulo a prime power, can be computed by finite automata. Many theorems about such sequences can therefore be proved using Walnut, which is an implementation of a decision procedure for proving various properties of automatic sequences. In this paper we explore some results (old and new) that can be proved using this method.

Abstract:A cyclic proof system gives us another way of representing inductive definitions and efficient proof search. In 2011 Brotherston and Simpson conjectured the equivalence between the provability of the classical cyclic proof system and that of the classical system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions. This paper studies the conjecture for intuitionistic logic. This paper first points out that the countermodel of FOSSACS 2017 paper by the same authors shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is false in general. Then this paper shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is true under arithmetic, namely, the provability of the intuitionistic cyclic proof system is the same as that of the intuitionistic system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions when both systems contain Heyting arithmetic HA. For this purpose, this paper also shows that HA proves Podelski-Rybalchenko theorem for induction and Kleene-Brouwer theorem for induction. These results immediately give another proof to the conjecture under arithmetic for classical logic shown in LICS 2017 paper by the same authors.

Abstract:In 2022, Broudy and Lovejoy extensively studied the function $S(n)$ which counts the number of overpartitions of \emph{Schur-type}. In particular, they proved a number of congruences satisfied by $S(n)$ modulo $2$, $4$, and $5$. In this work, we extend their list of arithmetic properties satisfied by $S(n)$ by focusing on moduli which are small powers of 2. In particular, we prove the following infinite family of Ramanujan-like congruences: For all $\alpha\geq 0$ and $n\geq 0$, $$ S\left(2^{5+2\alpha}n+\left(2^{5+2\alpha}-\frac{2^{2+2\alpha}-1}{3}\right)\right)\equiv 0 \pmod{16}. $$ All of the proof techniques used herein are elementary, relying on classical $q$-series identities and generating function manipulations as well as the parameterization work popularized by Alaca, Alaca, and Williams.

Abstract:Using the Morris-Selberg Constant Term Identity, I sketch a proof of a recent conjecture by Karola Meszaros and Alejandro Morales, that I believe could be easily made fully rigorous by a sufficiently skilled and, sufficiently interested, analyst. This conjecture is an analog to the root system $D_n$ of a conjecture made in 1998 by Clara Chan, the late David P. Robbins, and David Yuen, that I proved immediately after, also using the Morris identity.
