Abstract:This paper proposes a diffusive wetting model for the weakly-compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method to simulate individual water entry/exit as well as the complete process from water entry to exit. The model is composed of a physically consistent diffusive wetting equation to describe the wetting evolution at the fluid-solid interface, a wetting-coupled identification approach to determine the type of fluid particles by taking into account the wetting degree of the contacted solid, and a numerical regularization on the fluid particles at fully wetted fluid-solid interface. The accuracy, efficiency, and versatility of the present model are validated through qualitative and quantitative comparisons with experiments, including the 3-D water entry of a sphere, the 2-D water entry/exit of a cylinder, and the complete process from water entry to exit of a 2-D cylinder.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problem of simulating the wetting behavior during the water body's entry and exit processes, especially within the framework of the weakly - compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method. Specifically, the article proposes a diffusive wetting model, aiming to simulate the process of a single object entering and leaving the water surface as well as the entire process from entry to exit. The following are the main problems and solutions in this paper: ### 1. **Research Background** - The phenomenon of water body entry and exit is of great significance in fields such as ocean engineering and naval hydrodynamics. - In the early stage of high - speed impact, the inertial effect is dominant, and gravity, surface wettability and air - cushion effects can be ignored. - However, in the later stage, especially when the impact speed is not high, these factors become important. - Surface wettability has a significant impact on the splashing behavior, but this problem is rarely dealt with in existing numerical simulations because its modeling is complex and costly. ### 2. **Existing Problems** - **Water Body Entry**: Although there are a large number of studies, it is very difficult to deal with surface wettability in actual numerical simulations. - **Water Body Exit**: Compared with the entry process, there are fewer studies on the exit process, and there is a lack of mature theoretical support. - **Complete Entry - Exit Process**: At present, there is no effective single model that can simultaneously simulate the complete process of water body entry and exit. ### 3. **Proposed Solutions** - **Diffusive Wetting Model**: Based on the weakly - compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method, a diffusive wetting model is proposed. - **Physically Consistent Wetting Equation**: The wetting evolution of the solid - liquid interface is described by the diffusive wetting equation: \[ \frac{\partial \varphi^*}{\partial t}=\gamma \nabla^2 \varphi^* \] where $\varphi^*$ is the relative humidity and $\gamma$ is the diffusion coefficient. - **Wetting Coupling Identification Method**: Determine the type of fluid particles according to the wetting degree of the contacting solid. - **Numerical Regularization**: Perform numerical regularization on fluid particles at the fully - wetted solid - liquid interface. ### 4. **Verification and Application** - The accuracy, efficiency and universality of the model are verified through qualitative and quantitative comparisons with experimental results. - Scenarios include a three - dimensional sphere entering the water body, a two - dimensional cylinder entering/leaving the water body, etc. ### 5. **Main Contributions** - A new diffusive wetting model is proposed, which can effectively simulate the wetting behavior during the water body's entry and exit processes within the WCSPH framework. - By introducing the diffusion coefficient to characterize surface wettability, the handling of complex physical properties is simplified. - The model is not only applicable to the separate water body entry or exit process, but also can simulate the complete process from entry to exit. In summary, this paper solves the surface wettability problem that is difficult to handle in existing numerical simulations by proposing a diffusive wetting model, and provides new ideas and methods for the simulation of water body entry and exit processes.
