Abstract:Existence of nontrivial topological phases in a tight binding Haldane-like model on the depleted Lieb lattice is reported. This two-band model is formulated by considering the nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and next-next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms along with complex phase which breaks the time reversal symmetry of this semi-metallic system. Topological feature of this model is studied along with the presence of sublattice symmetry breaking staggered onsite energy. Combined effect of these two broken symmetries is found crucial for an additional transition between nontrivial and trivial phases. System exhibits two types of phase transitions, say, between two nontrivial phases and nontrivial to trivial phases. Nonzero Chern numbers, existence of Hall plateau and symmetry protected edge states confirm the presence of the nontrivial phases. This two-band system hosts four different types of phases where two are topological. Additionally topological properties of stacked bilayer of the depleted Lieb lattices is also studied with similar Haldane-like Hamiltonian. This four-band system is found to host Chern insulating phases, with higher values of Chern numbers supported by in-gap edge states.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of exploring the existence of non-trivial topological phases in depleted Lieb lattices (i.e., lattices formed by removing some points from the Lieb lattice) and their bilayer structures. Specifically, the researchers constructed a tight-binding model that considers nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor, and next-next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms, and introduced a complex phase to break time-reversal symmetry. Through this model, the researchers aim to investigate whether topological insulating phases with non-zero Chern numbers exist in these specific lattice structures and the properties of these phases. The key points of the paper include: 1. **Model Construction**: A tight-binding model was constructed on the depleted Lieb lattice, including nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor, and next-next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms, and a complex phase was introduced to break time-reversal symmetry. 2. **Topological Properties**: The topological properties of the model were studied, particularly the existence of non-zero Chern numbers and the emergence of edge states. 3. **Phase Transitions**: The phase transition behavior of the system under different parameters was explored, including transitions from non-trivial phases to trivial phases and transitions between two non-trivial phases. 4. **Bilayer Structure**: The topological properties of the bilayer depleted Lieb lattice were further studied, revealing that this system can support topological insulating phases with higher Chern numbers. Through these studies, the paper hopes to provide new insights into the understanding of topological phases in 2D materials and to offer a theoretical foundation for future experimental research.
