Abstract:We establish several bounds for solutions to elliptic/parabolic cross-diffusion systems of $m$ equations ($m\ge2$) on 2d/3d domains $\Og$. We settle the existence and global existence problems in these cases and also provide new counter-examples for the case of general dimensions. Most importantly, we prove that when $m=N=3$, the thinness of $\Og$ in $\RR^3$ is sufficient and necessary. When $m$ is arbitrary and $N=3$, we establish global existence results for nonlinear cross-diffusion systems (the case of the scalar semilinear equation was considered in the literature but the classical methods do not seem to be applicable here).

Abstract:We study the global existence of classical solutions to cross diffusion systems of $m$ equations on $N$-dimensional domains ($m,N\ge2$). The diffusion matrix is a triangular block matrix with coupled entries. We establish that the $W^{1,p}$ norm of solutions for some $p>N$ does not blow up in finite time so that the results in \cite{Am2} is applicable. We will also show that the spectral gap condition in \cite{dlebook,dlebook1} can be relaxed via a new result on BMO norms in \cite{dleBMO}.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to study a Cahn-Hilliard model for a multicomponent mixture with cross-diffusion effects, degenerate mobility and where only one of the species does separate from the others. We define a notion of weak solution adapted to possible degeneracies and our main result is (global in time) existence. In order to overcome the lack of a-priori estimates, our proof uses the formal gradient flow structure of the system and an extension of the boundedness by entropy method which involves a careful analysis of an auxiliary variational problem. This allows to obtain solutions to an approximate, time-discrete system. Letting the time step size go to zero, we recover the desired weak solution where, due to their low regularity, the Cahn-Hilliard terms require a special treatment.

These new results will be crucial in obtaining coexistence and persistence for many models with cross diffusion effects.

Abstract:We prove sharp regularity estimates for solutions of highly degenerate fully nonlinear elliptic equations. These are free boundary models in which a nonlinear diffusion process drives the system only in the region where the gradient surpasses a given threshold. Our main result concerns the existence of a universal modulus of continuity for $Du$, up to the free boundary. Gradient bounds for the $L^\infty$ norm are proven to be uniform with respect to the degree of degeneracy. Several new ingredients are needed and among the tools introduced in this paper is an improvement of regularity lemma designed to measure the oscillation decay concerning the gradient level-set distance. Applications of the methods are discussed at the end of the paper.

Abstract:We consider the n-dimensional ( $$n=2,3$$ ) Camassa–Holm equations with nonlocal diffusion of type $$(-\,\Delta )^{s}, \ \frac{n}{4}\le s<1$$ . In Gan et al. (Discrete Contin Dyn Syst 40(6):3427–3450, 2020), the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of finite energy weak solutions is established. In this paper, we show that with regular initial data, the finite energy weak solutions are indeed regular for all time. Moreover, the weak solutions are stable with respect to the initial data. The main difficulty lies in establishing higher order uniform estimates with the presence of the fractional Laplacian diffusion. To achieve this, we need to explore suitable fractional Sobolev type inequalities and bilinear estimates for fractional derivatives. The critical case $$s=\frac{n}{4}$$ contains extra difficulties and a smallness assumption on the initial data is imposed.

If both species have the same random diffusion coefficients and the space dimension is less than or equal to three, we establish the global existence and uniform boundedness of smooth solutions to the model in convex domains. This extends some previous works of Kim [12] and Shim [21] in one dimensional space.

Abstract:We consider a wide class of fully nonlinear integro-differential equations that degenerate when the gradient of the solution vanishes. By using compactness and perturbation arguments, we give a complete characterization of the regularity of viscosity solutions according to different diffusion orders. More precisely, when the order of the fractional diffusion is sufficiently close to 2, we obtain Hölder continuity for the gradient of any viscosity solutions and further derive an improved gradient regularity estimate at the origin. For the order of the fractional diffusion in the interval $(1, 2)$, we prove that there is at least one solution of class $C^{1, \alpha}_{\rm loc}$. Additionally, if the order of the fractional diffusion is in the interval $(0,1]$, the local Hölder continuity of solutions is inferred.

Abstract:We investigate the global time existence of smooth solutions for the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto system of cross-diffusion equations of two competing species in population dynamics. If there are self-diffusion in one species and no cross-diffusion in the other, we show that the system has a unique smooth solution for all time in bounded domains of any dimension. We obtain this result by deriving global $W^{1,p}$-estimates of Calderón-Zygmund type for a class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations with self-diffusion. These estimates are achieved by employing Caffarelli-Peral perturbation technique together with a new two-parameter scaling argument.

Abstract:The objective is to investigate the global existence of solutions for a degenerate chemotaxis system with logistic sources in a two-dimensional domain. It is demonstrated that the inclusion of logistic sources can exclude the occurrence of blow-up solutions, even in the presence of superlinear growth in the cross-diffusion rate. Our proof relies on the application of elliptic and parabolic regularity in Orlicz spaces and variational approach.

Abstract:We study the boundedness and convergence to equilibrium of weak solutions to reaction-diffusion systems with nonlinear diffusion. The nonlinear diffusion is of porous medium type and the nonlinear reaction terms are assumed to grow polynomially and to dissipate (or conserve) the total mass. By utilising duality estimates, the dissipation of the total mass and the smoothing effect of the porous medium equation, we prove that if the exponents of the nonlinear diffusion terms are high enough, then weak solutions are bounded, locally Hölder continuous and their $L^{\infty}(\Omega)$-norm grows in time at most polynomially. In order to show convergence to equilibrium, we consider a specific class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion models, which describe a single reversible reaction with arbitrarily many chemical substances. By exploiting a generalised Logarithmic Sobolev Inequality, an indirect diffusion effect and the polynomial in time growth of the $L^{\infty}(\Omega)$-norm, we show an entropy entropy-production inequality which implies exponential convergence to equilibrium in $L^p(\Omega)$-norm, for any $1\leq p < \infty$, with explicit rates and constants.

Abstract:We study a series of regularity results for solutions of a degenerate/singular fully nonlinear integro-differential equation $$- \bigg( \sigma_{1}(|Du|) + a(x) \sigma_{2}(|Du|) \bigg) I_{\tau}(u,x) = f(x).$$ In the degenerate case, we establish borderline regularity provided the inverse of degeneracy law $ \sigma_{2}$ is Dini-continuous. In addition, we show Schauder-type higher regularity at local extrema point for a concrete non-local degenerate equation. In the singular case, we prove gradient Hölder regularity of solutions to general non-local equation. It is noteworthy that these results are new even for the case $ a(x) \equiv 0 $. Finally, as a byproduct of the borderline regularity, we show how to apply our strategies in the study of the corresponding regularity for a class of degenerate non-local normalized $ p$-Laplacian equation.

Abstract:We study some properties of a multi-species degenerate Ginzburg-Landau energy and its relation to a cross-diffusion Cahn-Hilliard system. The model is motivated by multicomponent mixtures where crossdiffusion effects between the different species are taken into account, and where only one species does separate from the others. Using a comparison argument, we obtain strict bounds on the minimizers from which we can derive first-order optimality conditions, revealing a link with the single-species energy, and providing enough regularity to qualify the minimizers as stationary solutions of the evolution system. We also discuss convexity properties of the energy as well as long time asymptotics of the time-dependent problem. Lastly, we introduce a structure-preserving finite volume scheme for the time-dependent problem and present several numerical experiments in one and two spatial dimensions.

Abstract:In this article we establish fine results on the boundary behavior of solutions to nonlocal equations in $C^{k,\gamma}$ domains which satisfy local Neumann conditions on the boundary. Such solutions typically blow up at the boundary like $v \asymp d^{s-1}$ and are sometimes called large solutions. In this setup we prove optimal regularity results for the quotients $v/d^{s-1}$, depending on the regularity of the domain and on the data of the problem. The results of this article will be important in a forthcoming work on nonlocal free boundary problems.
