On Consistent Kinetic and Derivative Interactions for Gravitons

Abstract:The only known fully ghost-free and consistent Lorentz-invariant kinetic term for a graviton (or indeed for any spin-2 field) is the Einstein-Hilbert term. Here we propose and investigate a new family of candidate kinetic interactions and their extensions to derivative interactions involving several spin-2 fields. These new terms generically break diffeomorphism invariance(s) and as a result can lead to the propagation of 5 degrees of freedom for a single spin-2 field - analogous to ghost-free Massive Gravity. We discuss under what circumstances these new terms can be used to build healthy effective field theories and in the process establish the `Jordan' and `Einstein' frame pictures for Massive-, Bi- and Multi-Gravity.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of linear gravitational perturbations on cosmological backgrounds of massive fermionic fields. We observe that, when gravitational and matter action are expanded to quadratic order in gravitational perturbations on cosmological backgrounds, the graviton appears to have an off-shell mass. We derive a consistent set of two equations for the evolution of linear classical and quantum gravitational perturbations on general cosmological backgrounds, and demonstrate that the graviton mass disappears at the level of equations of motion (on-shell). In the case we consider the expansion of the Universe is driven by the one-loop backreaction of fermions, and the dynamical gravitons evolve on the same background. These equations govern the evolution of linear gravitational perturbations on general cosmological matter backgrounds. A concrete one-loop calculation is performed for the simple case of massive Dirac fermions when the temperature of the cosmological fluid changes adiabatically when compared with the expansion rate of the Universe.

Abstract:Drawing from a thought experiment that we conduct, we propose that a virtual graviton gives rise to a black hole geometry when its momentum surpasses a certain threshold value on the Planck scale. This hypothesis implies that the propagator of a virtual graviton, that possesses momentum surpassing this threshold, vanishes. Consequently, a Feynman diagram containing this type of graviton propagator does not add to the overall amplitude. This mechanism suggests the feasibility of formulating an ultraviolet-finite four-dimensional quantum gravitational theory. The elementary particles including the gravitons are treated as point particles in this formulation.

Abstract:A new wave of relativistic nature is derived from the classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation on a curved space-time. The gravitational time dilation in the neighbourhood of an almost point-like mass is responsible for its existence. In order to obtain such type of wave (interpretable as a matter field), one has to resort to an old idea due to de Broglie according to which the physical -dimensional space behaves as if it were covered with an infinity of clocks. The resulting particle field, that propagates in the physical -dimensional space and is due to the interaction with the (classic) gravitational field of the mass, is shown to be associated with the usual scalar particle wave function of quantum mechanics. Therefore, the model here described, by linking Einstein's general relativity to the wave-like behaviour of particles via the viewpoint of de Broglie's Double Solution Theory rather than via the standard mechanisms of field quantisation, provides a new approach to quantum gravity. Finally, it is shown that this model provides a new interpretation of the single-particle interference and explains non-locality in terms of a novel quantum communication channel.

The Liouville equation for this problem is solved by finding the density matrix satisfying von Newmann-like equation in the form of product of wave functions. The relation to quantum mechanics is discussed.

Abstract:It is shown that if we can define a physical quantity with proper character in a given inertial reference frame (kinematic, dynamic, electromagnetic in its nature) which transforms when detected from a reference frame relative to which it moves with velocity $u_x$ as $F=\f{F^o}{\sqrt{1-\f{u_x^2}{c^2}}}$ then we can derive for it transformation equations following one and the same procedure, which involves the addition law of relativistic velocities which can be derived without using the Lorentz transformations. The transformation equation derived that way, generates the physical quantities $u_xF$ and $u_x'F'$, for which physicists invent names reflecting theirs physical meaning.

Abstract:The solution of the Dirac equation for an attractive linear potential is considered. The Lorentz nature of the potential (vector or scalar) affects the existence of bound states. For simplicity, and since it is sufficient for the goals of this study, only the ground state is considered. The case of equal vector and scalar pieces of the linear potential is emphasized because it lends itself to a simple analytic solution. This solution corresponds to a state which is strictly bound. For a linear potential with a larger component of the vector part, we find a state that is only quasi-bound, but its decay can be strongly inhibited by an effective potential barrier.

Abstract:Inspired by Leonard Parker's pioneering 1968 work demonstrating matter quanta production in a dynamical spacetime background, we consider production of scalar quanta in a gravitational wave background. Choosing the spacetime to be a flat spacetime perturbed linearly by a linear gravitational wave, we show that scalar particles may indeed be produced in a perturbative manner. Our formulation is valid for any linear gravitational wave background profile, and is by no means restricted to monochromatic plane waves, in contrast to much of the earlier work on this topic. Thus, our work is directly applicable to gravitational wave signals from compact binary coalescence detected at LIGO-VIRGO-KAGRA, where they are of a pulsed character rather than monochromatic plane waves. We also briefly outline generalizing our approach for photon creation in a gravitational wave background. In this aspect, irrespective of the astrophysical nature of the binary merger sourcing the gravitational wave signal, one expects the dynamical nature of the spacetime to produce all species of light particles. Gravitational production of massive vectors non-minimally coupled to gravity

Abstract:A quantum theory of massive Abelian vector bosons with non-minimal couplings to gravity has been studied within an evolving, isotropic, and homogeneous gravitational background. The vectors may play a role of dark matter if stabilizing $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is imposed. In order to construct a gauge invariant theory of massive vectors that couple to the Ricci scalar and Ricci tensor, a generalization of the Stuckelberg mechanism has been invoked. Constraints that ensure consistency of the model had been formulated and corresponding restrictions upon the space of non-minimal couplings have been found. Canonical quantization of the theory in evolving gravitational background was adopted. Mode equations for longitudinally and transversally-polarized vector bosons were derived and solved numerically. Regions of exponential growth in the solutions of the mode equations have been determined and discussed in detail. The spectral energy density for the three polarizations has been calculated, and the UV divergence of the integrated total energy density has been addressed. Finally, assuming their stability, the present abundance of the vector bosons has also been calculated.

Abstract:Taking a quantum corrected form of Raychaudhuri equation in a geometric background described by a Lorentz-violating massive theory of gravity, we go through investigating a time-like congruence of massive gravitons affected by a Bohmian quantum potential. We find some definite conditions upon which these gravitons are confined to diverging Bohmian trajectories. The respective behaviour of those quantum potentials are also derived and discussed. Additionally, and through a relativistic quantum treatment of a typical wave function, we demonstrate schematic conditions on the associated frequency to the gravitons, in order to satisfy the necessity of divergence.

Very Special Linear Gravity: A Gauge-Invariant Graviton Mass

Abstract:Linearized gravity in the Very Special Relativity (VSR) framework is considered. We prove that this theory allows for a non-zero graviton mass $m_g$ without breaking gauge invariance nor modifying the relativistic dispersion relation. We find the analytic solution for the new equations of motion in our gauge choice, verifying as expected the existence of only two physical degrees of freedom. Finally, through the geodesic deviation equation, we confront some results for classic gravitational waves (GW) with the VSR ones: we see that the ratios between VSR effects and classical ones are proportional to $(m_g/E)^2$, $E$ being the energy of a graviton in the GW. For GW detectable by the interferometers LIGO and VIRGO this ratio is at most $10^{-20}$. However, for GW in the lower frequency range of future detectors, like LISA, the ratio increases significantly to $ 10^{-10}$, that combined with the anisotropic nature of VSR phenomena may lead to observable effects.

Covariant Quantization of the Partially Massless Graviton Field in de Sitter Spacetime

Abstract:We present a covariant quantization scheme for the so-called "partially massless" graviton field in de Sitter spacetime. Our approach is founded on the principles of the de Sitter group representation theory (in the sense given by Wigner), the Wightman-Gärding axioms for gauge-invariant fields (Gupta-Bleuler scheme), and the essential analyticity prerequisites in the complexified pseudo-Riemannian manifold. To implement the quantization process effectively, we adopt coordinate-independent (global) de Sitter plane waves. These plane waves, defined in the appropriate tube domains of complex de Sitter spacetime, serve as the de Sitter counterparts to the standard Minkowskian plane waves. By employing these analytical plane waves, we enable a spectral analysis of the corresponding two-point function that closely resembles the Fourier analysis typically employed in the flat Minkowskian case. Within this framework, we present the Wightman two-point function for the partially massless graviton field, which satisfies the essential criteria of locality, covariance, and normal analyticity. Furthermore, we provide insights into the underlying Hilbert space structure and the corresponding unsmeared field operator. A direct consequence of this quantization construction confirms the widely accepted notion of light-cone propagation for the de Sitter partially massless graviton field.

Abstract:We consider holomorphic Poisson-BF theory on twistor space. Classically, this describes self-dual Einstein gravity on space-time, but at the quantum level it is plagued by an anomaly. The anomaly corresponds to the fact that integrability of the self-dual vacuum Einstein equations does not survive in self-dual quantum gravity. We compute the anomaly polynomials in the Poisson-BF theory, as well as in this theory coupled to a holomorphic BF theory on twistor space describing self-dual Yang-Mills. We show that all anomalies may be cancelled by further coupling to a twistor field representing a type of axion on space-time. When the twistor anomalies are cancelled, all $n\geq4$-pt amplitudes vanish and integrability is restored.

Abstract:We revisit a question asked by Dyson: "Is a graviton detectable?" We demonstrate that in both Dyson's original sense and in a more modern measurement-theoretic sense, it is possible to construct a detector sensitive to single gravitons, and in fact a variety of existing and near-term gravitational wave detectors can achieve this. However, while such a signal would be consistent with the quantization of the gravitational field, we draw on results from quantum optics to show how the same signal could just as well be explained via classical gravitational waves. Abstract:Over the past three decades, it has been shown that discrete and continuous media can support topologically nontrivial waves. Recently, it was shown that the same is true of the vacuum, in particular, right (R) and left (L) circularly polarized photons are topologically nontrivial. Here, we study the topology of another class of massless particles, namely gravitons. We show that the collection of all gravitons forms a topologically trivial vector bundle over the lightcone, allowing us to construct a globally smooth basis for gravitons. The graviton bundle also has a natural geometric splitting into two topologically nontrivial subbundles, consisting of the R and L gravitons. The R and L gravitons are unitary irreducible bundle representations of the Poincaré group, and are thus elementary particles; their topology is characterized by the Chern numbers $\mp 4$. This nontrivial topology obstructs the splitting of graviton angular momentum into spin and orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:In the present article, we construct a 2D formulation of quantum gravity in the framework of a deterministic theory. In this context, a Quantum stationary Hamilton-Jacobi equation is derived from the Klein- Gordon equation written in the presence of a gravitational field. We show that this equation reduces to the Quantum stationary Hamilton- Jacobi equation when the gravitational field is not present in the 2D time-space. As a second step, we introduce the quantum gravitational Lagrangian for the quantum motion of a particle moving in the presence of a gravitational field. We, deduce the relationship between the gravitational quantum conjugate momentum and the velocity of the particle.
