Abstract:We study the polarized gluon distribution Δg(x) in a longitudinally polarized proton. We argue that the distribution can be calculated approximately from the quark color currents found in simple quark models. The first result from the MIT bag model as well as the non-relativistic quark model shows that Δg(x) is positive at all x. If this feature holds in QCD, it imposes a strong constraint on phenomenological fits to experimental data. The total gluon helicity ΔG from the bag model is about 0.3ℏ at the scale of 1 GeV, considerably smaller than previous theoretical expectations.

Abstract:Abstract An approximated solution for gluon distribution from DGLAP evolution equations with NLO splitting function in the small-$x$ limit is presented. We first obtain the simplified forms of LO and NLO splitting functions in the small-$x$ limit. With these approximated splitting functions, we obtain the analytical gluon distribution by using the Mellin transform. The free parameters in the boundary conditions are obtained by fitting the CJ15 gluon distribution data. We find that the asymptotic behavior of the gluon distribution is consistent with the CJ15 data; however, the NLO results with the consideration of ``ladder" structure of gluon emission are slightly better than those from LO. These results indicate that the corrections from NLO has a significant influence for the behavior of the gluon distribution in small-$x$ region. In addition, we investigate the DGLAP evolution of the proton structure function by using the analytical solution of the gluon distribution. The differential structure function shows that our results have a similar tendency with CJ15 at small-$x$. Abstract:Total resummation of leading logarithms of x contributing to the spin-dependent structure function g_1 ensures its steep rise at small x. DGLAP lacks such a resummation. Instead, the DGLAP expressions for g_1 are complemented with special phenomenological fits for the initial parton densities. The singular factors x^{-\alpha} in the fits mimic the resummation and also ensure the steep (power-like) rise of g_1 at the small-x region. Furthermore, DGLAP by definition cannot describe the region of small Q^2 whereas our approach can do it.

Abstract:In the high energy limit, soft gluons can be approximately described by quasi-classical gluon fields. It is well-known that the gluon field is a pure gauge field on the transverse plane at eikonal order. We derived the complete next-to-eikonal order solutions of the classical Yang-Mills equations for soft gluons in the dense nuclear regime. Utilizing these solutions, it is shown that Low's soft theorem at small x can be obtained by considering off-diagonal matrix elements of quasi-classical chromoelectric field between single gluon states in the dilute regime. We further propose on extending Low's soft theorem at small x to incorporate the effects of gluon saturation in the dense regime.

Abstract:Gluon distribution function at small x is computed using the extended McLerran-Venugopalan model. A lipatov like enhancement is seen as well as a non-trivial transverse momentum dependence which is estimated. It is shown that gluon density saturates at small x which would lead to unitarization of cross sections computed with this distribution function.

Analytic Solution for the Revised Helicity Evolution at Small $x$ and Large $N_c$: New Resummed Gluon-Gluon Polarized Anomalous Dimension and Intercept

Abstract:We construct an exact analytic solution of the revised small-$x$ helicity evolution equations derived recently. The equations we solve are obtained in the large-$N_c$ limit (with $N_c$ the number of quark colors) and are double-logarithmic (summing powers of $\alpha_s \ln^2(1/x)$ with $\alpha_s$ the strong coupling constant and $x$ the Bjorken $x$ variable). Our solution provides small-$x$, large-$N_c$ expressions for the flavor-singlet quark and gluon helicity parton distribution functions (PDFs) and for the $g_1$ structure function, with their leading small-$x$ asymptotics given by \begin{align} \Delta \Sigma (x, Q^2) \sim \Delta G (x, Q^2) \sim g_1 (x, Q^2) \sim \left( \frac{1}{x} \right)^{\alpha_h} , \notag \end{align} where the exact analytic expression we obtain for the intercept $\alpha_h$ can be approximated by $\alpha_h = 3.66074 \, \sqrt{\frac{\alpha_s \, N_c}{2 \pi}}$. Our solution also yields an all-order (in $\alpha_s$) resummed small-$x$ anomalous dimension $\Delta \gamma_{GG} (\omega)$ which agrees with all the existing fixed-order calculations (to three loops). Notably, our anomalous dimension is different from that obtained in the infrared evolution equation framework developed earlier by Bartels, Ermolaev, and Ryskin (BER), with the disagreement starting at four loops. Despite the previously reported agreement at two decimal points based on the numerical solution of the same equations, the intercept of our large-$N_c$ helicity evolution and that of BER disagree beyond that precision, with the BER intercept at large $N_c$ given by a different analytic expression from ours with the numerical value of $\alpha_h^{BER} = 3.66394 \, \sqrt{\frac{\alpha_s \, N_c}{2 \pi}}$. We speculate on the origin of this disagreement.

Helicity of Quarks and Gluons at Small Bjorken $x$

Abstract:The proton spin puzzle is a longstanding problem in high-energy nuclear physics: how the proton spin distributes among the spin and orbital angular momenta of the quarks and gluons inside. Two of the unresolved pieces of the puzzle are the contributions to quark and gluon spins from the region of small Bjorken $x$. This dissertation fills the gap by constructing the evolution of these quantities into the small-$x$ region using a modified dipole formalism. The dominant contributions to the evolution equations resum powers of $\alpha_s\ln^2(1/x)$, where $\alpha_s$ is the strong coupling constant. In general, these evolution equations do not close. However, once the large-$N_c$ or large-$N_c\& N_f$ limit is taken, they turn into a system of linear integral equations that can be solved iteratively. At large $N_c$, the evolution equations are shown to be consistent with the gluon sector of the polarized DGLAP evolution in the small-$x$ limit. We numerically solve the equations in the large-$N_c$ and large-$N_c\& N_f$ limits and obtain the exponential growth in $\ln(1/x)$ for $N_f \leq 5$, with the intercept decreasing with $N_f$. For the large-$N_c$ limit, we have $\alpha_h = 3.66$, which agrees up to the uncertainty with the earlier work by Bartels, Ermolaev and Ryskin. Furthermore, at $N_f=6$, the asymptotic form attains an oscillation in $\ln(1/x)$ on top of the exponential growth, with the period spanning several units of rapidity. Finally, parts of the single-logarithmic corrections to the small-$x$ helicity evolution is also derived, resumming powers of $\alpha_s\ln(1/x)$. There, the effects of the unpolarized small-$x$ evolution and the running coupling are also included for consistency. The complete single-logarithmic corrections can be derived based on the framework established here. Altogether, these equations will provide the most precise small-$x$ helicity evolution to date.

Polarized Dipole Scattering Amplitudes meet the Valence Quark Model

Abstract:The recently revised small-$x$ helicity evolution, resumming the double-logarithmic factor, $\alpha_s\ln^2(1/x)$, allows for the study of helicity distributions of quarks and gluons at small Bjorken $x$, corresponding to high center-of-mass energy. In this work, we calculate the moderate-$x$ initial conditions in the regime, $\alpha_s \ln^2(1/x)\sim 1$, for the small-$x$ helicity evolution using a light-front valence quark model of the proton, which provides additional physical information about the target. The perturbative emission and absorption of a gluon by the valence quarks are also included. The results, given in Eqs. (35), provide a new set of initial conditions with a significantly reduced number of free parameters than conventional models. Consequently, the predictive power of small-$x$ helicity evolution is expected to improve once the initial conditions from this work are incorporated.

Abstract:We use the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework to study the production of forward heavy quark-antiquark pairs in unpolarized proton-nucleus or proton-proton collisions in the small-x regime. In the limit of nearly back-to-back jets, the CGC result simplifies into the transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorization approach. For massless quarks, the TMD factorization formula involves three unpolarized gluon TMDs: the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon distribution, the adjoint-dipole gluon distribution, and an additional one. When quark masses are kept non-zero, three new gluon TMDs appear -- each partnered to one of the aforementioned distributions -- which describe the distribution of linearly-polarized gluons in the unpolarized small-x target. We show how these six gluon TMDs emerge from the CGC formulation and we determine their expressions in terms of Wilson line correlators. We calculate them analytically in the McLerran-Venugopalan model, and further evolve them towards smaller values of x using a numerical implementation of JIMWLK evolution.

Abstract:The hard-gluonic contribution to the first moment of the polarized proton structure function $g_1^p(x)$ is dependent of the factorization convention chosen in defining the quark spin density and the hard cross section for photon-gluon scattering. Two extremes of interest, namely gauge-invariant and chiral-invariant factorization schemes, are considered. We show that in order to satisfy the positivity constraint for sea and gluon polarizations, the polarized valence quark distributions should fully account for the observed $g_1^p(x)$ at $x\gsim 0.2\,$. This together with the first-moment and perturbative QCD constraints puts a pertinent restriction on the shape of $\Delta u_v(x)$ and $\Delta d_v(x)$. The spin-dependent sea distribution in the gauge-invariant factorization scheme is extracted from the data of $g_1^p(x)$. It is shown in the chiral invariant scheme that it is possible to interpret the $g_1^p(x)$ data with anomalous gluonic contributions, yet a best least $\chi^2$ fit to the data implies a gluon spin distribution which violates the positivity condition $|\Delta G(x)|\leq G(x)$. We then propose a more realistic set of parton spin distributions with sea polarization and with a moderate value of $\Delta G$. The polarized parton distributions in this work are presented in the next-to-leading order of QCD at the scale $Q^2=10\,{\rm GeV}^2\,$. Predictions for the polarized structure functions $g_1^n(x)$ of the neutron and $g_1^d(x)$ of the deuteron are given.

Abstract:We outline an approach to calculate the transverse-momentum-dependent distribution of linearly polarized gluons inside an unpolarized hadron on the lattice with the help of large momentum effective theory. To achieve this purpose, we propose calculating a Euclidean version of the degree of polarization for a fast-moving hadron on the lattice, which is ultraviolet finite, and no soft function subtraction is needed. Abstract:Operator-product expansion (OPE) can be employed to obtain the lowest-order, nonlocal quark scalar condensate component of gluon vacuum polarization. In particular, the nonlocal quark scalar condensate can be calculated by solving the Dyson–Schwinger equation (DSE) of QCD. Then, field-theoretical aspects of the gluon vacuum polarization and nonperturbative gluon propagator are considered in the Landau gauge. The gluon propagator we obtained is finite in the infrared domain, where the single gluon mass [Formula: see text] can be determined. Our results for the [Formula: see text] ratio range of that from 1.32 to 1.36, which agrees with previous determinations for this ratio. Then, the analytic structure of the gluon propagators from the OPE results is explored. The analysis of the gluon Schwinger function finds clear evidence of the positivity violations in the gluon propagator. In addition, the results of replacing the OPE simplified quark loop with the full quark one-loop are calculated in vacuum to investigate how good the OPE approximation approach is. The results demonstrate that the OPE approach provides a good approximate method to calculate the full light [Formula: see text] quark loop in vacuum. In particular, the OPE approach can well approximate the approach with full quark one-loop in a specific model. Finally, a new method for obtaining the chemical potential dependence of the gluon vacuum polarization and the dressed gluon propagators is developed.

Abstract:We derive a second-order linear differential equation for the leading order gluon distribution function G(x,Q^2) = xg(x,Q^2) which determines G(x,Q^2) directly from the proton structure function F_2^p(x,Q^2). This equation is derived from the leading order DGLAP evolution equation for F_2^p(x,Q^2), and does not require knowledge of either the individual quark distributions or the gluon evolution equation. Given an analytic expression that successfully reproduces the known experimental data for F_2^p(x,Q^2) in a domain x_min<=x<=x_max, Q_min^2<=Q^2<=Q_max^2 of the Bjorken variable x and the virtuality Q^2 in deep inelastic scattering, G(x,Q^2) is uniquely determined in the same domain. We give the general solution and illustrate the method using the recently proposed Froissart bound type parametrization of F_2^p(x,Q^2) of E. L. Berger, M. M. Block and C-I. Tan, PRL 98, 242001, (2007). Existing leading-order gluon distributions based on power-law description of individual parton distributions agree roughly with the new distributions for x>~10^-3 as they should, but are much larger for x<~10^-3.

Abstract:We include the quark to gluon and gluon to quark shock-wave transition operators into the small Bjorken-$x$ evolution equations for helicity in the flavor-singlet channel derived earlier. While such transitions do not affect the large-$N_c$ version of the evolution equations for helicity, the large-$N_c \& N_f$ equations are affected. ($N_c$ and $N_f$ are the numbers of quark colors and flavors, respectively.) We derive the corresponding corrected large-$N_c \& N_f$ equations for the polarized dipole amplitudes contributing to the flavor-singlet quark and gluon helicity distributions in the double-logarithmic approximation (DLA), resumming powers of $\alpha_s \, \ln^2 (1/x)$ with $\alpha_s$ the strong coupling constant. We solve these equations iteratively and extract the polarized splitting functions up to four loops. We show that our splitting functions agree with the fixed-order perturbative calculations up to and including the existing three-loops results. Similar to the large-$N_c$ helicity evolution in the shock-wave approach, our large-$N_c \& N_f$ small-$x$ splitting functions agree with those obtained in the infrared evolution equations framework up to three loops, but appear to slightly disagree at four loops.

Renormalization of the gluon distribution function in the background field formalism

Abstract:We derive the Leading Order DGLAP evolution of gluon distribution function in the target light cone gauge starting from its standard operator definition. The derivation is performed using the background field formalism employed in the Color Glass Condensate effective theory of small $x$ QCD. We adopt Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription to regulate in an unambiguous way the spurious singularity appearing in the light-cone gauge Feynman propagator. UV divergences are regulated via conventional dimensional regularization. The methods introduced in this paper represent the first steps in the construction of a unified framework for QCD evolution, which could address collinear physics as well as small $x$ physics and gluon saturation.

Abstract:The total gluon helicity in a polarized proton is shown to be a matrix element of a gauge-invariant but nonlocal, frame-dependent gluon spin operator [Formula: see text] in the large momentum limit. The operator [Formula: see text] is fit for the calculation of the total gluon helicity in lattice QCD. This calculation also implies that parton physics can be studied through the large momentum limit of frame-dependent, equal-time correlation functions of quarks and gluons.
