Abstract:Collective behavior has been observed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions for several decades. Collectivity is driven by the high particle multiplicities that are produced in these collisions. At the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), features of collectivity have also been seen in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions that can attain particle multiplicities comparable to peripheral Pb-Pb collisions. One of the possible signatures of collective behavior is the decrease of femtoscopic radii extracted from pion and kaon pairs emitted from high-multiplicity collisions with increasing pair transverse momentum. This decrease can be described in terms of an approximate transverse mass scaling. In the present work, femtoscopic analyses are carried out by the ALICE Collaboration on charged pion and kaon pairs produced in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV from the LHC to study possible collectivity in pp collisions. The event-shape analysis method based on transverse sphericity is used to select for spherical versus jet-like events, and the effects of this selection on the femtoscopic radii for both charged pion and kaon pairs are studied. This is the first time this selection method has been applied to charged kaon pairs. An approximate transverse-mass scaling of the radii is found in all multiplicity ranges studied when the difference in the Lorentz boost for pions and kaons is taken into account. This observation does not support the hypothesis of collective expansion of hot and dense matter that should only occur in high-multiplicity events. A possible alternate explanation of the present results is based on a scenario of common emission conditions for pions and kaons in pp collisions for the multiplicity ranges studied.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in proton - proton (pp) collisions, explore the possible collective behavior by studying the femtoscopic correlations of pions and kaons with the same charge. Specifically, the paper focuses on how the femtoscopic radii of these particle pairs change with transverse momentum (\(k_T\)) and multiplicity, and for the first time applies a selection method based on cross - sectional sphericity to distinguish spherical events from jet - like events. ### Research Background Collective behavior is usually observed in high - energy heavy - ion collisions and is characterized by high particle multiplicity. In recent years, similar phenomena have also been found in high - multiplicity proton - proton collision experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). An important feature of this phenomenon is that the femtoscopic radii of pion - kaon pairs emitted from high - multiplicity collisions decrease as the transverse momentum of the particle pairs increases. This phenomenon can be described by approximate transverse - mass scaling. ### Research Objectives 1. **Study femtoscopic correlations**: Analyze the femtoscopic correlations of pions and kaons with the same charge in proton - proton collisions through the experimental data of the ALICE collaboration at the LHC. 2. **Distinguish different types of events**: Use the selection method based on cross - sectional sphericity to distinguish spherical events from jet - like events and study the impact of this selection on the femtoscopic radius. 3. **Explore the possibility of collective behavior**: Explore whether these results support the hypothesis of collective expansion of hot and dense matter, or whether there are other explanations, such as pions and kaons having similar emission conditions in proton - proton collisions. ### Main Findings 1. **Changes in femtoscopic radius**: In all multiplicity ranges, when considering the Lorentz boost difference between pions and kaons, it is found that the femtoscopic radius exhibits approximate transverse - mass scaling. 2. **Differences between spherical events and jet - like events**: The femtoscopic radius of spherical events shows that the system size increases with multiplicity and is not affected by transverse momentum; while in jet - like events, the trend of the radius changing with transverse momentum is different. 3. **Theoretical explanation**: These results do not support the hypothesis of collective expansion of hot and dense matter that occurs only in high - multiplicity events, but instead propose another explanation, that is, within the studied multiplicity range, pions and kaons have similar emission conditions. ### Conclusions This study conducts a detailed analysis of the femtoscopic correlations of pions and kaons with the same charge in proton - proton collisions and for the first time applies a selection method based on cross - sectional sphericity, revealing the variation rules of the femtoscopic radius in different types of events. These findings are helpful for better understanding the possible collective behavior in small systems and provide a new perspective for future research. ### Formula Summary - Definition of cross - sectional sphericity: \[ S_T=\frac{2\min(\lambda_1,\lambda_2)}{\lambda_1 + \lambda_2} \] where \(\lambda_1\) and \(\lambda_2\) are the eigenvalues of the transverse - momentum matrix. - Definition of the correlation function: \[ C(p_1,p_2)=\frac{A(p_1,p_2)}{B(p_1,p_2)} \] where \(A(p_1,p_2)\) is the two - particle momentum distribution in a given event, and \(B(p_1,p_2)\) is the reference distribution. - Definition of Lorentz - invariant \(q_{inv}\): \[ q_{inv}=\sqrt{q^2 - q_0^2} \] where \(q = p_1 - p_2\) is the momentum difference of the particle pair, and \(q_0 = E_1 - E_2\) is the energy - component difference.
