Abstract:The interaction of a lattice of localized magnetic moments with a sea of conduction electrons in Kondo lattice models induces rich quantum phases of matter, such as Fermi liquids with heavily renormalized electronic quasiparticles, quantum critical non-Fermi liquid metals and unconventional superconductors, among others. The recent demonstration of moiré Kondo lattices has opened the door to investigate the Kondo problem with continuously tunable parameters. Although a heavy Fermi liquid phase has been identified in moiré Kondo lattices, the magnetic phases and Kondo breakdown transitions remain unexplored. Here we report a density-tuned Kondo destruction in AB-stacked MoTe2/WSe2 moiré bilayers by combining magneto transport and optical studies. As the itinerant carrier density decreases, the Kondo temperature decreases. At a critical density, we observe a heavy Fermi liquid to insulator transition, and a nearly concomitant emergence of ferromagnetic order. The observation is consistent with the scenario of a ferromagnetic Anderson insulator and suppression of the Kondo screening effect. Our results pave the path for inducing other exotic quantum phase transitions in moiré Kondo lattices.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of the specific mechanisms of magnetic phase transition and Kondo breakdown during the transition from heavy fermion liquid phase to insulator phase in a moiré Kondo lattice as the carrier density changes. Specifically, the authors experimentally studied the magnetic and transport properties of AB-stacked MoTe2/WSe2 moiré bilayer materials to explore whether ferromagnetism appears during the transition from heavy fermion liquid phase to insulator phase at different carrier densities, and what the relationship is between the appearance of this ferromagnetism and the breakdown of the Kondo effect. ### Main Research Questions: 1. **Transition from Heavy Fermion Liquid to Insulator**: What is the specific mechanism of the transition from heavy fermion liquid phase to insulator phase as the carrier density decreases? 2. **Magnetic Phase Transition**: Does ferromagnetism appear during this transition? If so, what is the mechanism? 3. **Kondo Breakdown**: How is the Kondo effect broken down during this process? What is the relationship between this breakdown and the magnetic phase transition? ### Research Background: - **Kondo Lattice Model**: The Kondo lattice model describes the interaction between local magnetic moments and free electrons, which can induce various quantum phases such as heavy fermion liquid, non-Fermi liquid metal, and unconventional superconductors. - **Moiré Kondo Lattice**: The moiré Kondo lattice provides a continuously tunable platform for studying Kondo problems by adjusting interlayer interactions and carrier density. - **Known Phenomena**: Heavy fermion liquid phase has been observed in moiré Kondo lattices, but magnetic phase transitions and Kondo breakdown have not been fully explored. ### Experimental Methods: - **Transport Measurements**: Study the electrical transport properties of the system by measuring the resistance as a function of temperature and magnetic field. - **Optical Measurements**: Study the magnetic properties of the system using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. ### Main Findings: - **Metal-Insulator Transition**: As the carrier density decreases, the system transitions from heavy fermion liquid phase to insulator phase, with a critical density of approximately \(x_c \approx 0.04\). - **Appearance of Ferromagnetism**: Near the critical density, ferromagnetism appears in the system, evidenced by a significant increase in magnetic susceptibility and anomalous Hall effect. - **Kondo Breakdown**: Near the critical density, the Kondo effect is broken down, evidenced by divergent resistance and enhanced magnetism. ### Discussion: - **Mechanism Analysis**: The appearance of ferromagnetism may be related to the exchange interaction between local magnetic moments, while the breakdown of the Kondo effect may be due to Anderson localization. - **Future Research Directions**: Further research is needed to determine the dominant mechanisms at different carrier densities and the specific relationships between these phase transitions. In summary, through experimental and theoretical analysis, this paper reveals the specific mechanisms of magnetic phase transition and Kondo breakdown during the transition from heavy fermion liquid to insulator in a moiré Kondo lattice, providing new insights for understanding quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated electron systems.
