Abstract:Multiscale modelling is a new paradigm that has emerged in recent times to study the well-known problem of the process-structure-property relationship in the area of materials science and engineering. For obtaining the desired performance for materials of strategic importance, such as superalloys, it is essential to bridge different length and time scales in order to navigate the entire design space. In the present study, we develop a physics-based model for a Ni-based superalloy where the microstructures simulated using a phase-field model serve as input to finite-element computations. We examine the alloy's microstructure evolution and effective elastic properties quantitatively via phase-field and finite element methods integrated with CALPHAD database, by varying composition and aging temperature. The phase-field simulations provide us with an insight into the different regimes of microstructure evolution. The finite element analysis uncovers the relation of effective elastic properties with several system parameters.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily focuses on addressing the issues of microstructure evolution and effective elastic property prediction of Ni-based superalloys under different conditions. Specifically, the research objectives include the following aspects: 1. **Application of Multiscale Modeling Methods**: By combining the Phase-field method and the Finite element method, the researchers aim to establish a multiscale model that can span different time and spatial scales to better understand and predict the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ni-based superalloys. 2. **Microstructure Evolution Simulation**: Utilizing the Phase-field method to simulate the microstructure evolution process of Ni-based superalloys under different compositions and aging temperatures. The study particularly focuses on the interaction between the γ phase and the γ' phase and the changes in microstructure over time. 3. **Effective Elastic Property Prediction**: Based on the simulated microstructure, the Finite element analysis method is used to predict the effective elastic properties of the material, such as elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio. These properties are influenced not only by the material composition but also closely related to the microstructure. 4. **Integration of CALPHAD Database**: By integrating the free energy functions provided by the CALPHAD database, researchers can more accurately describe the thermodynamic behavior of the material in the Phase-field simulations. In summary, this paper aims to quantitatively predict the microstructure evolution and effective elastic properties of Ni-based superalloys by combining physically-based Phase-field simulations and Finite element analysis. This approach helps materials scientists design new materials with specific properties and provides a theoretical basis for material selection in industrial applications.
