Abstract:We prove a generalised interchange equality for 3-cells in a Gray-category, i.e. we show that it still holds modulo the unique isomorphism given by the Gray-categorical pasting theorem of Di Vittorio. This significantly simplifies many calculations in Gray-categories.

Abstract:A Quillen model structure on the category Gray-Cat of Gray-categories is described, for which the weak equivalences are the triequivalences. It is shown to restrict to the full subcategory Gray-Gpd of Gray-groupoids. This is used to provide a functorial and model-theoretic proof of the unpublished theorem of Joyal and Tierney that Gray-groupoids model homotopy 3-types. The model structure on Gray-Cat is conjectured to be Quillen equivalent to a model structure on the category Tricat of tricategories and strict homomorphisms of tricategories.

Abstract:In this paper we present $2$-category theory from the perspective of Gray-categories using the graphical calculus of separated surface diagrams. As an extended example we consider cones and limits of $2$-functors. Then we use the canonical adjunction between $2$-computads and $2$-categories to interpret the comparison structure of lax functors and extend the surface diagram calculus with compositor sheets in order to represent and reason about them.

Abstract:In the $3$-gauge theory, a $3$-connection is given by a $1$-form $A$ valued in the Lie algebra $ \mathfrak g$, a $2$-form $B$ valued in the Lie algebra $\mathfrak h $ and a $3$-form $C$ valued in the Lie algebra $ \mathfrak l $, where $(\mathfrak g,\mathfrak h, \mathfrak l)$ constitutes a differential $ 2$-crossed module. We give the $3$-gauge transformations from a $3$-connection to another, and show the transformation formulae of the $1$-curvature $2$-form, the $2$-curvature $3$-form and the $3$-curvature $4$-form. The gauge configurations can be interpreted as smooth $\mathbf{Gray}$-functors between two $\mathbf{Gray}$ $3$-groupoids: the path $3$-groupoid $\mathcal{P}_3(X)$ and the $3$-gauge group $ \mathcal{G}^{\mathscr L}$ associated to the $ 2$-crossed module $\mathscr L$, whose differential is $(\mathfrak g,\mathfrak h, \mathfrak l)$. The derivatives of $\mathbf{Gray}$-functors are $3$-connections, and the derivatives of lax-natural transformations between two such $\mathbf{Gray}$-functors are $3$-gauge transformations. We give the $3$-dimensional holonomy, the lattice version of the $3$-curvature, whose derivative gives the $3$-curvature $4$-form. The covariance of $3$-curvatures easily follows from this construction. This $\mathbf{ Gray}$-categorical construction explains why $3$-gauge transformations and $3$-curvatures have the given forms. The interchanging $3$-arrows are responsible for the appearance of terms concerning the Peiffer commutator $\{,\}$.

Abstract:The geometric and algebraic properties of Gray categories with duals are investigated by means of a diagrammatic calculus. The diagrams are three-dimensional stratifications of a cube, with regions, surfaces, lines and vertices labelled by Gray category data. These can be viewed as a generalisation of ribbon diagrams. The Gray categories present two types of duals, which are extended to functors of strict tricategories with natural isomorphisms, and correspond directly to symmetries of the diagrams. It is shown that these functors can be strictified so that the symmetries of a cube are realised exactly. A new condition on Gray categories with duals called the spatial condition is defined. A class of diagrams for which the evaluation for spatial Gray categories is invariant under homeomorphisms is exhibited. This relation between the geometry of the diagrams and structures in the Gray categories proves useful in computations and has potential applications in topological quantum field theory.

The Gray tensor product of $(\infty,n)$-categories

Abstract:In this note, we leverage the author's pasting theorem for $(\infty,n)$-categories to construct new models of $(\infty,n)$-categories for all $n \leq \infty$, as presheaves on certain categories of computads. Among these new models are some which facilitate a construction of the Gray tensor product of $(\infty,n)$-categories Day convolution and reflection, which we carry out here. After constructing this Gray tensor product of $(\infty,n)$-categories, we characterize it via several model-independent universal properties.

Commutators and crossed modules of color Hopf algebras

Abstract:In a previous paper we showed that the category of cocommutative color Hopf algebras is semi-abelian in case the group $G$ is abelian and finitely generated and the characteristic of the base field is different from 2 (not needed if $G$ is finite of odd cardinality). Here we describe the commutator of cocommutative color Hopf algebras and we explain the Hall's criterion for nilpotence and the Zassenhaus Lemma. Furthermore, we introduce the category of color Hopf crossed modules and we explicitly show that this is equivalent to the category of internal crossed modules in the category of cocommutative color Hopf algebras and to the category of simplicial cocommutative color Hopf algebras with Moore complex of length 1.

Cartesian Gray-Monoidal Double Categories

Abstract:In this paper we present cartesian structure for symmetric Gray-monoidal double categories. To do this we first introduce locally cubical Gray categories, which are three-dimensional categorical structures analogous to classical, locally globular, Gray categories. The motivating example comprises double categories themselves, together with their functors, transformations, and modifications. A one-object locally cubical Gray category is a Gray-monoidal double category. Braiding, syllepsis, and symmetry for these is introduced in a manner analogous to that for 2-categories. Adding cartesian structure requires the introduction of doubly-lax functors of double categories to manage the order of copies. The resulting theory is algebraically rather complex, largely due to the bureaucracy of linearizing higher-dimensional boundary constraints. Fortunately, it has a relatively simple and compelling representation in the graphical calculus of surface diagrams, which we present.

A semi-strictly generated closed structure on Gray-Cat

Abstract:We show that the semi-strictly generated internal homs of $\mathbf{Gray}$-categories $[\mathfrak{A}, \mathfrak{B}]_\text{ssg}$ defined in \cite{Miranda strictifying operational coherences} underlie a closed structure on the category $\mathbf{Gray}$-$\mathbf{Cat}$ of $\mathbf{Gray}$-categories and $\mathbf{Gray}$-functors. The morphisms of $[\mathfrak{A}, \mathfrak{B}]_\text{ssg}$ are composites of those trinatural transformations which satisfy the unit and composition conditions for pseudonatural transformations on the nose rather than up to an invertible $3$-cell. Such trinatural transformations leverage three-dimensional strictification \cite{Miranda strictifying operational coherences} while overcoming the challenges posed by failure of middle four interchange to hold in $\mathbf{Gray}$-categories \cite{Bourke Gurski Cocategorical Obstructions to a Tensor Product of Gray Categories}. As a result we obtain a closed structure that is only partially monoidal with respect to \cite{crans tensor of gray categories}. As a corollary we obtain a slight strengthening of strictification results for braided monoidal bicategories \cite{Gurski Loop Spaces}, which will be improved further in a forthcoming paper \cite{Miranda weak interchange 4-categories}.

Abstract:We give a definition of the Gray tensor product in the setting of scaled simplicial sets which is associative and forms a left Quillen bifunctor with respect to the bicategorical model category of Lurie. We then introduce a notion of oplax functor in this setting, and use it in order to characterize the Gray tensor product by means of a universal property. A similar characterization was used by Gaitsgory and Rozenblyum in their definition of the Gray product, thus giving a promising lead for comparing the two settings.

Abstract:We construct a (lax) Gray tensor product of $(\infty,2)$-categories and characterize it via a model-independent universal property. Namely, it is the unique monoidal biclosed structure on the $\infty$-category of $(\infty,2)$-categories which agrees with the classical Gray tensor product of strict 2-categories when restricted to the Gray cubes (i.e. the Gray tensor powers $[1]^{\otimes n}$ of the arrow category).

Homomorphisms of (n,m)-graphs with respect to generalised switch

Abstract:The study of homomorphisms of $(n,m)$-graphs, that is, adjacency preserving vertex mappings of graphs with $n$ types of arcs and $m$ types of edges was initiated by Nešetřil and Raspaud [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 2000]. Later, some attempts were made to generalize the switch operation that is popularly used in the study of signed graphs, and study its effect on the above mentioned homomorphism. In this article, we too provide a generalization of the switch operation on $(n,m)$-graphs, which to the best of our knowledge, encapsulates all the previously known generalizations as special cases. We approach to study the homomorphism with respect to the switch operation axiomatically. We prove some fundamental results that are essential tools in the further study of this topic. In the process of proving the fundamental results, we have provided yet another solution to an open problem posed by Klostermeyer and MacGillivray [Discrete Mathematics 2004]. We also prove the existence of a categorical product for $(n,m)$-graphs on with respect to a particular class of generalized switch which implicitly uses category theory. This is a counter intuitive solution as the number of vertices in the Categorical product of two $(n,m)$-graphs on $p$ and $q$ vertices has a multiple of $pq$ many vertices, where the multiple depends on the switch. This solves an open question asked by Brewster in the PEPS 2012 workshop as a corollary. We also provide a way to calculate the product explicitly, and prove general properties of the product. We define the analog of chromatic number for $(n,m)$-graphs with respect to generalized switch and explore the interrelations between chromatic numbers with respect to different switch operations. We find the value of this chromatic number for the family of forests using group theoretic notions.

Tricategorical Universal Properties Via Enriched Homotopy Theory

Abstract:We develop the theory of tricategorical limits and colimits, and show that they can be modelled up to biequivalence via certain homotopically well-behaved limits and colimits enriched over the monoidal model category $\mathbf{Gray}$ of $2$-categories and $2$-functors. This categorifies the relationship that bicategorical limits and colimits have with the so called `flexible' enriched limits in $2$-category theory. As examples, we establish the tricategorical universal properties of Kleisli constructions for pseudomonads, Eilenberg-Moore and Kleisli constructions for (op)monoidal pseudomonads, centre constructions for $\mathbf{Gray}$-monoids, and strictifications of bicategories and pseudo-double categories.

Gray (skew) multicategories: double and Gray-categorical cases

Abstract:We construct in a unifying way skew-multicategories and multicategories of double and Gray-categories that we call Gray (skew) multicategories. We study their different versions depending on the types of functors and higher transforms. We construct Gray type products by generators and relations and prove that Gray skew-multicategories are closed and representable on one side, and that the Gray multicaticategories taken with the strict type of functors are representable. We conclude that the categories of double and Gray-categories with strict functors underlying Gray (skew) multicategories are skew monoidal, respectively monoidal, depending on the type of the inner-hom and product considered. The described Gray (skew) multicategories we see as prototypes of general Gray (skew) multicategories, which correspond to (higher) categories of higher dimensional internal and enriched categories.

On interpolation categories for the hyperoctahedral group

Abstract:Two different types of Deligne categories have been defined to interpolate the finite dimensional complex representations of the hyperoctahedral group. The first one, initially defined by Knop and then further studied by Likeng and Savage, uses a categorical analogue of the permutation representation as a tensor generator. The second one, due to Flake and Maassen, is tensor generated by a categorical analogue of the reflection representation. We construct a symmetric monoidal functor between the two and show that it is an equivalence of symmetric monoidal categories.

Abstract:We formulate a connection between a topological and a geometric category. The former is the idempotent completion of the (horizontal) trace of the affine Hecke category, while the latter is the equivariant derived category of the (semi-nilpotent) commuting stack. This provides a more precise and improved version of our proposal in [8].

Abstract:In $\rm{GL}_N$, a series of subgroups indexed by $0\leq M\leq N-1$ were noticed by H. Jacquet-I. Piatetski Shapiro-J. Shalika, J. Cogdell, and D. Gaiotto. It was conjectured by D. Gaiotto that the categories of twisted D-modules on the affine Grassmannian of $\rm{GL}_N$ with equivariant structure with respect to these subgroups are equivalent to the categories of representations of quantum supergroups $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(M|N))$. When $M=0$ and $M=N-1$, this conjecture was proved due to D. Gaitsgory and A. Braverman-M. Finkelberg-R. Travkin, respectively. In this paper, we prove the other cases. We adapt the global method originating from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0611323" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0611323">arXiv:math/0611323</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0705.4571" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0705.4571">arXiv:0705.4571</a>. In order to compare the global definition of Gaiotto category with the local definition, we generalize the local-global comparison theorem of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1811.02468" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1811.02468">arXiv:1811.02468</a> to a general setting.

Abstract:We investigate a version of the Green correspondence for categories of complexes, including homotopy categories and derived categories. The correspondence is an equivalence between a category defined over a finite group $G$ and the same for a subgroup $H$, often the normalizer of a $p$-subgroup of $G$. We present a basic formula for deciding when categories of modules or complexes have a Green correspondence and apply it to many examples. In several cases the equivalence is an equivalence of triangulated categories, and in special cases it is an equivalence of tensor triangulated categories.

On categories with arbitrary 2-cell structures

Abstract:When a category is equipped with a 2-cell structure it becomes a sesquicategory but not necessarily a 2-category. It is widely accepted that the latter property is equivalent to the middle interchange law. However, little attention has been given to the study of the category of all 2-cell structures (seen as sesquicategories with a fixed underlying base category) other than as a generalization for 2-categories. The purpose of this work is to highlight the significance of such a study, which can prove valuable in identifying intrinsic features pertaining to the base category. These ideas are expanded upon through the guiding example of the category of monoids. Specifically, when a monoid is viewed as a one-object category, its 2-cell structures resemble semibimodules.
