Abstract:Within the Landau-Ginzburg picture of phase transitions, scalar field theories develop phase separation because of a spontaneous symmetry-breaking mechanism. This picture works in thermodynamics but also in the dynamics of phase separation. Here we show that scalar non-equilibrium field theories undergo phase separation just because of non-equilibrium fluctuations driven by a persistent noise. The mechanism is similar to what happens in Motility-Induced Phase Separation where persistent motion introduces an effective attractive force. We observe that Noise-Induced Phase Separation occurs in a region of the phase diagram where disordered field configurations would otherwise be stable at equilibrium. Measuring the local entropy production rate to quantify the time-reversal symmetry breaking, we find that such breaking is concentrated on the boundary between the two phases.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the phase separation phenomenon driven by persistent noise and time - reversal symmetry breaking in non - equilibrium field theory. Specifically, the authors studied how the non - equilibrium scalar field theory undergoes phase separation under the influence of persistent noise and explored the relationship between this phase separation and time - reversal symmetry breaking. ### Main research contents 1. **Phase separation mechanism**: - The authors showed that under the action of persistent noise, the non - equilibrium scalar field theory can undergo phase separation in certain regions of the phase diagram, while these regions are usually disordered in equilibrium systems. - This phase separation mechanism is similar to the motility - induced phase separation (MIPS) in active matter, but the difference is that there is no need to introduce any local non - equilibrium terms here to break time - reversal symmetry or produce micro - phase separation. 2. **Time - reversal symmetry breaking**: - By measuring the local entropy production rate to quantify the breaking of time - reversal symmetry, it was found that this breaking is mainly concentrated on the boundary between the two phases. - The authors used the total entropy production rate \( S \) to characterize the non - equilibrium characteristics of the system, where \( S \) is defined as the long - time behavior of the Kullback - Leibler divergence of the path probability distribution: \[ S \equiv \lim_{T \to \infty} \frac{1}{T} \left\langle \log \frac{P[\phi]}{P_R[\phi]} \right\rangle \] where \( P[\phi] \) represents the probability of the path \( \phi(x, t) \) and \( P_R[\phi] \) represents the probability of the time - reversed path. 3. **Numerical simulation and theoretical analysis**: - The authors studied the behaviors of two models (Model A and Model B) in two - dimensional space through numerical simulation and verified the theoretical predictions. - For Model B, the authors observed that as the noise correlation time \( \tau \) increases, the phase - separation region gradually expands. - The authors also calculated the critical exponents \( \nu \) and \( \eta \) and found that they are consistent with the Ising universality class. ### Conclusions - The authors showed that non - equilibrium noise can drive the scalar field theory to undergo phase separation in certain regions of the phase diagram, and these regions are usually disordered in equilibrium systems. - The time - reversal symmetry breaking is mainly concentrated on the boundary between the two phases, indicating that the phase separation is maintained by persistent non - equilibrium dynamics. - This research provides a new perspective for understanding phase separation and time - reversal symmetry breaking in active matter, especially through the role of non - equilibrium noise. ### Formula summary - The expression of the effective energy function \( H_{\text{eff}} \): \[ H_{\text{eff}} = \frac{\tilde{a}}{2} \phi^2 + \frac{\tilde{u}}{4} \phi^4 + O(\phi^6) \] where: \[ \tilde{a} \equiv a(1 + \tau a) - 3u\tau \] \[ \tilde{u} \equiv u(1 + 4\tau) \] - The definition of the total entropy production rate \( S \): \[ S \equiv \lim_{T \to \infty} \frac{1}{T} \left\langle \log \frac{P[\phi]}{P_R[\phi]} \right\rangle \] - The expression of the local entropy production rate \( \sigma(x) \): \[ \sigma(x) = \frac{\tau^2}{2D} \left\langle \dot{\phi}^3 \right\rangle
