Abstract:Schmidt's game, and other similar intersection games have played an important role in recent years in applications to number theory, dynamics, and Diophantine approximation theory. These games are real games, that is, games in which the players make moves from a complete separable metric space. The determinacy of these games trivially follows from the axiom of determinacy for real games, $\mathsf{AD}_\mathbb{R}$, which is a much stronger axiom than that asserting all integer games are determined, $\mathsf{AD}$. One of our main results is a general theorem which under the hypothesis $\mathsf{AD}$ implies the determinacy of intersection games which have a property allowing strategies to be simplified. In particular, we show that Schmidt's $(\alpha,\beta,\rho)$ game on $\mathbb{R}$ is determined from $\mathsf{AD}$ alone, but on $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n \geq 3$ we show that $\mathsf{AD}$ does not imply the determinacy of this game. We also prove several other results specifically related to the determinacy of Schmidt's game. These results highlight the obstacles in obtaining the determinacy of Schmidt's game from $\mathsf{AD}$.

Abstract:Matthew Baker investigated, in previous work, an elegant, infinite-length game that may be used to study subsets of real numbers. We present two accessible examples of how an important technique from set theory, or a different technique from infinite game theory, may be used to answer Baker's question on whether this game provides a precise characterization for countable subsets of real numbers, and we connect this game to the well-studied Banach-Mazur game from topology.

Abstract:We study a class of Cantor sets in [0, 1]. We show that the complement of the Cantor set is winning for Schmidt game if and only if the Cantor set is not "fat". This provides some open dense sets of full Lebesgue measure that are not winning for Schmidt game.

Abstract:For $n \in \mathbb{N}$ and $\varepsilon > 0$, given a sufficiently long sequence of events in a probability space all of measure at least $\varepsilon$, some $n$ of them will have a common intersection. A more subtle pattern: for any $0 < p < q < 1$, we cannot find events $A_i$ and $B_i$ so that $\mu \left( A_i \cap B_j \right) \leq p$ and $\mu \left( A_j \cap B_i\right) \geq q$ for all $1 < i < j < n$, assuming $n$ is sufficiently large. This is closely connected to model-theoretic stability of probability algebras. We survey some results from our recent work on more complicated patterns that arise when our events are indexed by multiple indices. In particular, how such results are connected to higher arity generalizations of de Finetti's theorem in probability, structural Ramsey theory, hypergraph regularity in combinatorics, and model theory.

Intersection matrices revisited

Abstract:Several intersection matrices of $s$-subsets vs. $k$-subsets of a $v$-set are introduced in the literature. We study these matrices systematically through counting arguments and generating function techniques. A number of new or known identities appear as natural consequences of this viewpoint; especially, appearance of the derivative operator $d/dz$ and some related operators reveals some connections between intersection matrices and the "combinatorics of creation-annihilation". As application, the eigenvalues of several intersection matrices including some generalizations of the adjacency matrices of the Johnson scheme are derived; two new bases for the Bose--Mesner algebra of the Johnson scheme are introduced and the associated intersection numbers are obtained as well. Finally, we determine the rank of some intersection matrices.

Abstract:We introduce and study the class of semidefinite games, which generalizes bimatrix games and finite N -person games, by replacing the simplex of the mixed strategies for each player by a slice of the positive semidefinite cone in the space of real symmetric matrices. For semidefinite two-player zero-sum games, we show that the optimal strategies can be computed by semidefinite programming. Furthermore, we show that two-player semidefinite zero-sum games are almost equivalent to semidefinite programming, generalizing Dantzig's result on the almost equivalence of bimatrix games and linear programming. For general two-player semidefinite games, we prove a spectrahedral characterization of the Nash equilibria. Moreover, we give constructions of semidefinite games with many Nash equilibria. In particular, we give a construction of semidefinite games whose number of connected components of Nash equilibria exceeds the long standing best known construction for many Nash equilibria in bimatrix games, which was presented by von Stengel in 1999.

Abstract:We propose a unifying additive theory for standard conventions in Combinatorial Game Theory, including normal-, misère- and scoring-play, studied by Berlekamp, Conway, Dorbec, Ettinger, Guy, Larsson, Milley, Neto, Nowakowski, Renault, Santos, Siegel, Sopena, Stewart (1976-2019), and others. A game {\em universe} is a set of games that satisfies some standard closure properties. Here, we reveal when the fundamental game comparison problem, ``Is $G\su H$?'', simplifies to a constructive `local' solution, which generalizes Conway's foundational result in ONAG (1976) for normal-play games. This happens in a broad and general fashion whenever a given game universe is {\em absolute}. Games in an absolute universe satisfy two properties, dubbed {\em parentality} and {\em saturation}, and we prove that the latter is implied by the former. Parentality means that any pair of non-empty finite sets of games is admissible as options, and saturation means that, given any game, the first player can be favored in a disjunctive sum. Game comparison is at the core of combinatorial game theory, and for example efficiency of potential reduction theorems rely on a local comparison. We distinguish between three levels of game comparison; superordinate (global), basic (semi-constructive) and subordinate (local) comparison. In proofs, a sometimes tedious challenge faces a researcher in CGT: in order to disprove an inequality, an explicit distinguishing game might be required. Here, we explain how this job becomes obsolete whenever a universe is absolute. Namely, it suffices to see if a pair of games satisfies a certain Proviso together with a Maintenance of an inequality.

Abstract:We consider an n -player non-cooperative game with continuous strategy sets. The strategy set of each player contains a set of stochastic linear constraints. We model the stochastic linear constraints of each player as a joint chance constraint. We assume that the row vectors of a matrix defining the stochastic constraints of each player are independent and each row vector follows a multivariate normal distribution. Under certain conditions, we show the existence of a Nash equilibrium for this game.

Sandwich Bernstein-Sato Polynomials and Bernstein's Inequality

Abstract:Bernstein's inequality is a central result in the theory of $D$-modules on smooth varieties. While Bernstein's inequality fails for rings of differential operators on general singularities, recent work of Àlvarez Montaner, Hernández, Jeffries, Núñez-Betancourt, Teixeira, and Witt establishes Bernstein's inequality for invariants of finite groups in characteristic zero and certain other mild singularities in positive characteristic. Motivated by extending this result to new classes of singular rings, we introduce a ``two-sided'' analogue of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial which we call the sandwich Bernstein-Sato polynomial. We apply this notion to give an effective criterion to verify Bernstein's inequality, and apply this to show that Bernstein's inequality holds for the coordinate ring of $\mathbb{P}^a \times \mathbb{P}^b$ via the Segre embedding. We also establish a number of examples and basic results on sandwich Bernstein-Sato polynomials.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Junge and Palazuelos presented two two-player games exhibiting interesting properties. In their first game, entangled players can perform notably better than classical players. The quantitative gap between the two cases is remarkably large, especially as a function of the number of inputs to the players. In their second game, entangled players can perform notably better than players that are restricted to using a maximally entangled state (of arbitrary dimension). This was the first game exhibiting such a behavior. The analysis of both games is heavily based on non-trivial results from Banach space theory and operator space theory. Here we provide alternative proofs of these two results. Our proofs are arguably simpler, use elementary probabilistic techniques and standard quantum information arguments, and also give better quantitative bounds.

Abstract:This paper continues studies of non-intersection properties of finite collections of sets initiated 40 years ago by the extremal principle. We study elementary non-intersection properties of collections of sets, making the core of the conventional definitions of extremality and stationarity. In the setting of general Banach/Asplund spaces, we establish new primal (slope) and dual (generalized separation) necessary conditions for these non-intersection properties. The results are applied to convergence analysis of alternating projections.

Abstract:We study several variants of a combinatorial game which is based on Cantor's diagonal argument. The game is between two players called Kronecker and Cantor. The names of the players are motivated by the known fact that Leopold Kronecker did not appreciate Georg Cantor's arguments about the infinite, and even referred to him as a "scientific charlatan." In the game Kronecker maintains a list of m binary vectors, each of length n , and Cantor's goal is to produce a new binary vector which is different from each of Kronecker's vectors, or prove that no such vector exists. Cantor does not see Kronecker's vectors but he is allowed to ask queries of the form What is bit number j of vector number i? What is the minimal number of queries with which Cantor can achieve his goal? How much better can Cantor do if he is allowed to pick his queries adaptively , based on Kronecker's previous replies? The case when m = n is solved by diagonalization using n (nonadaptive) queries. We study this game more generally, and prove an optimal bound in the adaptive case and nearly tight upper and lower bounds in the nonadaptive case.

Abstract:A subset of the vertex set of a graph is geodetically convex if it contains every vertex on any shortest path between two elements of the set. The convex hull of a set of vertices is the smallest convex set containing the set. We study variations of two games introduced by Buckley and Harary, where two players take turns selecting previously-unselected vertices of a graph until the convex hull of the jointly-selected vertices becomes too large. The last player to move is the winner. The achievement game ends when the convex hull contains every vertex. In the avoidance game, the convex hull is not allowed to contain every vertex. We determine the nim-value of these games for several graph families.

Abstract:Two selection games from the literature, $G_c(\mathcal O,\mathcal O)$ and $G_1(\mathcal O_{zd},\mathcal O)$, are known to characterize countable dimension among certain spaces. This paper studies their perfect- and limited-information strategies, and investigates issues related to non-equivalent characterizations of zero-dimensionality for spaces that are not both separable and metrizable. To relate results on zero-dimensional and finite-dimensional spaces, a generalization of Telgársky's proof that the point-open and finite-open games are equivalent is demonstrated.

Abstract:In many multiagent environments, a designer has some, but limited control over the game being played. In this paper, we formalize this by considering incompletely specified games, in which some entries of the payoff matrices can be chosen from a specified set. We show that it is NP-hard for the designer to make these choices optimally, even in zero-sum games. In fact, it is already intractable to decide whether a given action is (potentially or necessarily) played in equilibrium. We also consider incompletely specified symmetric games in which all completions are required to be symmetric. Here, hardness holds even in weak tournament games (symmetric zero-sum games whose entries are all -1, 0, or 1) and in tournament games (symmetric zero-sum games whose non-diagonal entries are all -1 or 1). The latter result settles the complexity of the possible and necessary winner problems for a social-choice-theoretic solution concept known as the bipartisan set. We finally give a mixed-integer linear programming formulation for weak tournament games and evaluate it experimentally.

Abstract:We study simplicial complexes (hypergraphs closed under taking subsets) that are the intersection of a given number k of matroids. We prove bounds on their chromatic numbers (the minimum number of edges required to cover the ground set) and their list chromatic numbers. Settling a conjecture of Kiraly and Berczi et. al., we prove that the list chromatic number is at most k times the chromatic number. Following the footsteps of Edmonds, who considered the case k=2, we study three polytopes associated with k-tuples of matroids, and prove bounds on the distances between them. The tools used are in part topological.

Abstract:We modify the game Fuchino, Koppelberg, and Shelah used to characterize the κ -Freese-Nation property for a given Boolean algebra A , replacing players I and II each with a team of n players with limited information. We show that A is tightly κ -filtered exactly when team II has a winning strategy for every finite team size. Case κ=א0 characterizes projective Boolean algebras and, hence, Dugundji spaces. In terms of the open-open game of Daniels, Kunen, and Zhou, this characterization is a team version of "very I-favorable." We similarly characterize Cohen algebras in terms of a team version of I-favorability. If A is the clopen algebra of the space of n -uniform hypergraphs on κ+n that avoid copies of [n+1]n , then team II has a winning strategy for our modified FKS game for team size n−1 but not n . For n≥3 , this algebra also answers a question of Geschke when combined with a locally < κ -sized characterization of tightly κ -filtered Boolean algebras that we prove. Case κ=א0 includes a locally finite characterization of projective Boolean algebras.

Uncountable sets and an infinite linear order game

Abstract:An infinite game on the set of real numbers appeared in Matthew Baker's work [Math. Mag. 80 (2007), no. 5, pp. 377--380] in which he asks whether it can help characterize countable subsets of the reals. This question is in a similar spirit to how the Banach-Mazur Game characterizes meager sets in an arbitrary topological space. In a recent paper, Will Brian and Steven Clontz prove that in Baker's game, Player II has a winning strategy if and only if the payoff set is countable. They also asked if it is possible, in general linear orders, for Player II to have a winning strategy on some uncountable set. To this we give a positive answer and moreover construct, for every infinite cardinal $\kappa$, a dense linear order of size $\kappa$ on which Player II has a winning strategy on all payoff sets. We finish with some future research questions, further underlining the difficulty in generalizing the characterization of Brian and Clontz to linear orders.
