Abstract:In Finsler geometry, the Minkowski space is a generalization of the Euclidean space. We will brief isometric immersions of Finsler manifolds in Minkowski spaces, in particular, minimal immersions. The volume variation and the mean curvature of Finsler submanifolds in a Minkowski space are given. Some Bernstein type theorems and non-trivial examples for minimal surfaces in Minkowski spaces are shown.

Abstract:We survey recent developments on the analysis of Gauss--Codazzi--Ricci equations, the first-order PDE system arising from the classical problem of isometric immersions in differential geometry, especially in the regime of low Sobolev regularity. Such equations are not purely elliptic, parabolic, or hyperbolic in general, hence calling for analytical tools for PDEs of mixed types. We discuss various recent contributions -- in line with the pioneering works by G.-Q. Chen, M. Slemrod, and D. Wang [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. (2010); Comm. Math. Phys. (2010)] -- on the weak continuity of Gauss--Codazzi--Ricci equations, the weak stability of isometric immersions, and the fundamental theorem of submanifold theory with low regularity. Two mixed-type PDE techniques are emphasised throughout these developments: the method of compensated compactness and the theory of Coulomb--Uhlenbeck gauges.

Abstract:Kirigami is the art of cutting paper to make it articulated and deployable, allowing for it to be shaped into complex two and three-dimensional geometries. The mechanical response of a kirigami sheet when it is pulled at its ends is enabled and limited by the presence of cuts that serve to guide the possible non-planar deformations. Inspired by the geometry of this art form, we ask two questions: (i) What is the shortest path between points at which forces are applied? (ii) What is the nature of the ultimate shape of the sheet when it is strongly stretched? Mathematically, these questions are related to the nature and form of geodesics in the Euclidean plane with linear obstructions (cuts), and the nature and form of isometric immersions of the sheet with cuts when it can be folded on itself, and are related to a class of questions associated with isometric immersions in differential geometry and geodesics in discrete and computational geometry. We provide a constructive proof that the geodesic connecting any two points in the plane is piecewise polygonal. We then prove that the family of polygonal geodesics can be simultaneously rectified into a straight line by flat-folding the sheet so that its configuration is a (non-unique) piecewise affine planar isometric immersion.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the smooth isometric immersion of a complete, simply connected surface with a negative Gauss curvature into the three-dimensional Euclidean space. A fundamental and longstanding problem is to find a sufficient condition for a complete negatively curved surface to be isometrically embedded in R^3 [67]. It can be described as an initial and/or boundary value problem for a hyperbolic system of nonlinear partial differential equations derived from the Gauss-Codazzi equations. The mathematical theory associated with this system is largely incomplete. The global smooth isometric immersion has been proven in the literature when the Gauss curvature decays rapidly and monotonically. However, when the Gauss curvature oscillates or decays slowly, the problem becomes much more challenging and little is known. In our paper, we find a sufficient condition, consisting of a finite total Gauss curvature and appropriate oscillations of the Gauss curvature. Under this condition we prove the global existence of a smooth solution to the Gauss-Codazzi system, achieving a global smooth isometric immersion of the surface into R^3. Furthermore, we show that the finite total Gauss curvature is necessary for the existence of a solution in a special case of the Gauss-Codazzi system. New techniques are developed to overcome the difficulties posed by the slow decay and oscillations of the Gauss curvature. By observing that certain combinations of the Riemann invariants decay faster than others, we reformulate the Gauss-Codazzi equations as a symmetric hyperbolic system and uncover a crucial structure of partial dampings. These partial dampings, along with the finite total curvature and appropriate oscillations of the Gauss curvature, enable us to obtain a global smooth solution through delicate analysis, and consequently establish a global smooth isometric immersion of such surfaces.

Abstract:We review classical approaches to the problem of isometrically embedding a Riemannian surface into Euclidean 3-space, including coordinate-based approaches exposited by Darboux and Eisenhart, as well as the moving-frames based approaches advocated by Cartan. In particular, the first approach involves reducing the problem to solving a single PDE; settling the question of when this PDE is integrable by the method of Darboux is the subject of this short note. This is surprisingly easy, since it is related to the analogous question for the isometric embedding system arising from the moving frames approach, and this was accomplished in recent joint work with Clelland, Tehseen and Vassiliou (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1801.00241" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1801.00241">arXiv:1801.00241</a>).

Abstract:Isogeometric analysis method is a new approach for physical simulation and analysis based on the ex-act geometry representation of CAD models directly. From the viewpoint of geometric computing, we present a review on the basic framework of isogeometric analysis method, and the related work on geometric design and computing for isogeometric analysis. The research progress on analysis-suitable parameterization of computa-tional domain, analysis-suitable spline theory, isogeometric collocation method, parallel computing for iso-geometric analysis is introduced in details. Finally a few future directions of geometric computing problems in isogeometric analysis are presented.

Abstract:We approach the study of totally real immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant sectional curvature -1. We introduce a notion of first and second fundamental form, we prove that they satisfy a similar version of the classic Gauss-Codazzi equations, and conversely that solutions of Gauss-Codazzi equations are immersion data of some equivariant map. This study has some interesting geometric consequences: 1) it provides a formalism to study immersions of surfaces into SL(2,C) and into the space of geodesics of H^3; 2) it generalizes the classical theory of immersions into non-zero curvature space forms, leading to a model for the transitioning of hypersurfaces among H^n, AdS^n, dS^n and S^n; 3) we prove that a holomorphic family of immersion data corresponds to a holomorphic family of immersions, providing an effective way to construct holomorphic maps into the SO(n,C)-character variety. In particular we will point out a simpler proof of the holomorphicity of the complex landslide; 4) we see how, under certain hypothesis, complex metrics on a surface (i.e. complex bilinear forms of its complexified tangent bundle) of constant curvature -1 correspond to pairs of projective surfaces with the same holonomy. Applying Bers Double Uniformization Theorem to this construction we prove a Uniformization Theorem for complex metrics on a surface.

Abstract:In his survey of Smale’s work in Differential Topology, Moe Hirsch observed that there seemed to be no significant results in immersion theory published in the period between the work of H. Whitney in the forties and Smale’s classification of immersions of spheres (1958, 1959). This observation overlooks the C1-isometric immersion results of J. Nash (1954) and N. Kuiper (1955). At the time, the Nash isometric immersion theory was viewed as a separate result in Riemannian geometry; it had no relevance to Smale’s immersion theory or to the flowering of immersion-theoretic topology that took place in the sixties following Smale’s ground-breaking results. However, the Nash theory had an unexpected role to play as a precursor to M. Gromov’s remarkable refinement of immersion theory, known as Convex Integration Theory (1973). The history of immersion theory is rich and complex. It is perhaps appropriate on the occasion of the Smalefest, at which there were interesting informal discussions on the history of Differential Topology, to tie together some historical loose ends on the relation of the Nash C1-isometric immersion theory to these much later developments in immersion-theoretic topology due to M. Gromov.

Abstract:This paper investigates existence and non-existence of immersions of Riemannian manifolds. It discovers the lowest dimension of the Euclidean space into which the projective plane FP2 is isometrically immersed, by the computation of the normal Euler class. For strictly hyperbolic immersion, a new obstruction involving signature or Kervaire semi-characteristic is found. As for the existence, it constructs a strictly hyperbolic immersion from the Klein bottle to the unit sphere S3(1), solving a question posed by Gromov.

Abstract:It was shown by Ramanathan (Manuscripta Math 60:417–422, 1988) that any compact oriented minimal surface in the three-dimensional round sphere admits at most a finite set of pairwise noncongruent minimal isometric immersions. In this paper, we extend this result to isotropic surfaces in spheres of higher dimension. The case of isotropic surfaces other than compact in space forms is also addressed.

Abstract:In this article we propose a novel geometric model to study the motion of a physical flag. In our approach, a flag is viewed as an isometric immersion from the square with values in satisfying certain boundary conditions at the flag pole. Under additional regularity constraints we show that the space of all such flags carries the structure of an infinite dimensional manifold and can be viewed as a submanifold of the space of all immersions. In the second part of the article we equip the space of isometric immersions with its natural kinetic energy and derive the corresponding equations of motion. This approach can be viewed in a spirit similar to Arnold's geometric picture for the motion of an incompressible fluid.

Abstract:The isometric embedding problem is a fundamental problem in differential geometry. A longstanding problem is considered in this paper to characterize intrinsic metrics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold which can be realized as isometric immersions into the three-dimensional Euclidean space. A remarkable connection between gas dynamics and differential geometry is discussed. It is shown how the fluid dynamics can be used to formulate a geometry problem. The equations of gas dynamics are first reviewed. Then the formulation using the fluid dynamic variables in conservation laws of gas dynamics is presented for the isometric embedding problem in differential geometry.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide families of second order non-linear partial differential equations, describing pseudospherical surfaces (pss equations), with the property of having local isometric immersions in E^3, with principal curvatures depending on finite-order jets of solutions of the differential equation. These equations occupy a particularly special place amongst pss equations, since a series of recent papers [2, 7, 11, 12, 13], on several classes of pss equations, seemed to suggest that only the sine-Gordon equation had the above property. Explicit examples are given, which include the short pulse equation and some generalizations.

Abstract:The difference between the differential geometric concept of an isometry between two given surfaces as purely mathematical objects and the kinematical concept of an isometric deformation of a single unstretchable material surface as a physical object is discussed. We clarify some misunderstandings that have been promoted in recent works concerning the mechanics of unstretchable material surfaces and we discuss this issue within the context of two specific examples. A revealing distinction between isometries and isometric deformations in two space dimensions is reviewed, and the use of rectifying developable surfaces to characterize the isometric deformation of rectangular material strips is analyzed.
