Abstract:Pro-$p$ groups of finite powerful class are studied. We prove that these are $p$-adic analytic, and further describe their structure when their powerful class is small. It is also shown that there are only finitely many finite $p$-groups of fixed coclass and powerful class.

Abstract:The paper explores the effect of powerful class of Sylow $p$-subgroups of a given finite group on control of transfer or fusion. We also find an explicit bound for the $p$-length of a $p$-solvable group in terms of the poweful class of a Sylow $p$-subgroup.

Abstract:A non-trivial finitely generated pro-$p$ group $G$ is said to be strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$ if every non-trivial finitely generated closed subgroup of $G$ admits a faithful self-similar action on a $p$-ary tree. We classify the solvable torsion-free $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ groups of dimension less than $p$ that are strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$. Moreover, we show that a solvable torsion-free $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ group of dimension less than $p$ is strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$ if and only if it is isomorphic to the maximal pro-$p$ Galois group of some field that contains a primitive $p$-th root of unity. As a key step for the proof of the above results, we classify the 3-dimensional solvable torsion-free $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ groups that admit a faithful self-similar action on a $p$-ary tree, completing the classification of the 3-dimensional torsion-free $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ groups that admit such actions.

Abstract:For an element $x$ of a finite group $T$, the $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$-class of $x$ is the set $\{ x^\sigma\mid \sigma\in \mathrm{Aut}(T)\}$. We prove that the order $|T|$ of a finite nonabelian simple group $T$ is bounded above by a function of the parameter $m(T)$, where $m(T)$ is the maximum, over all primes $p$, of the number of $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$-classes of elements of $T$ of $p$-power order. This bound is a substantial generalisation of results of Pyber, and of Héthelyi and Külshammer, and it has implications for relative Brauer groups of finite extensions of global fields.

Abstract:We introduce the class of \textit{Generalized Poincaré-Duality groups}: i.e, pro-$p$ groups of infinite rank which satisfy a Poincaré-duality. We prove some basic properties of Generalized Poincaré-Duality groups, and show that under some conditions, a group that fits into an exact sequence of GPD groups must be a Demushkin group.

Abstract:Let p be a prime. We prove that certain amalgamated free pro- p products of Demushkin groups with pro- p -cyclic amalgam cannot give rise to a 1-cyclotomic oriented pro- p group, and thus do not occur as maximal pro- p Galois groups of fields containing a root of 1 of order p . We show that other cohomological obstructions which are used to detect pro- p groups that are not maximal pro- p Galois groups—the quadraticity of -cohomology and the vanishing of Massey products—fail with the above pro- p groups. Finally, we prove that the Minač–Tân pro- p group cannot give rise to a 1-cyclotomic oriented pro- p group, and we conjecture that every 1-cyclotomic oriented pro- p group satisfy the strong n -Massey vanishing property for .

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $\mathbb{Z}_p=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. We study finite groups with abelian derived subgroup and exponent $p$ in terms of group extension data and their matrix presentations. We show a one-to-one correspondence between the following two sets: (i) the isoclasses of class 2 groups of exponent $p$ and order $p^{m+n}$ and with derived subgroup $\mathbb{Z}_p^n$, and (ii) the set $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))/\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ of orbits of $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))$ under the congruence action by $\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, where $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))$ is the set of $n$-dimensional subspaces of anti-symmetric matrices of order $m$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We give a description of the orbit spaces $\text{Gr}(2, \text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))/\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for all $m$ and $p$ by applying the theory of pencils of anti-symmetric matrices. Based on this, we show complete sets of representatives of orbits of $\text{Gr}(3,\text{AS}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3)$, $\text{Gr}(4, \text{AS}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ and $\text{Gr}(3, \text{AS}_5(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_5(\mathbb{Z}_3)$. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of corresponding class 2 groups of exponent $p$. In particular, we recover the classification of groups with exponent 3 and order $\le 3^8$.
The lower $p$-series of analytic pro-$p$ groups and Hausdorff dimension

Abstract:Let $G$ be a $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ group of dimension $d$. We produce an approximate series which descends regularly in strata and whose terms deviate from the lower $p$-series in a uniformly bounded way. This brings to light a new set of rational invariants, canonically associated to $G$, that yield the aforementioned uniform bound and that restrict the possible values for the Hausdorff dimensions of closed subgroups of $G$ with respect to the lower $p$-series. In particular, the Hausdorff spectrum of $G$ with respect to the lower $p$-series is discrete and consists of at most $2^d$ rational numbers.

On the $p$-adic limit of class numbers along a pro-$p$-extension

Abstract:Let $K/k$ be a pro-$p$-extension over a number field $k$ whose Galois group is finitely generated and $k_0\subseteq k_1\subseteq\cdots\subseteq k_n\subseteq\cdots$ an ascending sequence of intermediate fields of $K/k$ such that $k_n/k$ is normal, $[k_n:k]<\infty$ and $\bigcup_{n\ge 0} k_n=K$. We will show by using representation theory of finite groups that the non-$p$-part $h_n(p')$ of the class number of $k_n$ converges $p$-adically as $n\rightarrow\infty$, and the limit is independent to the choice of $k_n$'s. Also, in the case where $K/k$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension over an abelian number field $k$, we will take an analytic approach and obtain certain enigmatic relationships between the $p$-adic limits of vaious arithmetic invariants along $K/k$, namely, the class number, the ratio of $p$-adic regulator and the square root of the discriminant, and the order of the algebraic $K_2$-group of the ring of integers.

Abstract:Let p be a prime number. One of the most difficult and important questions in Galois theory these days is determining which pro- p groups can occur as maximal pro- p Galois groups. Some restrictions of the structure of maximal pro- p Galois groups are already known, and therefore, the families of all pro- p groups satisfying these restrictions are in the center of the research. In the current paper we deal with three of these families: The family of all pro- p groups which satisfy hereditarily the n -vanishing Massey product property, the family of 1-cyclotomic oriented pro- p groups, and the family of pro- p groups that are hereditarily of p -absolute Galois type. We show that all these families are closed under taking profinite completion of each order.

Abstract:We investigate some properties of the $p$-elements of a profinite group $G$. We prove that if $p$ is odd and the probability that a randomly chosen element of $G$ is a $p$-element is positive, then $G$ contains an open prosolvable subgroup. On the contrary, there exist groups that are not virtually prosolvable but in which the probability that a randomly chosen element of $G$ is a 2-element is arbitrarily close to 1. We prove also that if a profinite group $G$ has the property that, for every $p$-element $x$, it is positive the probability that a randomly chosen element $y$ of $G$ generates with $x$ a pro-$p$ group, then $G$ contains an open pro-$p$ subgroup.

On $p$-groups with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.

p-Nilpotent maximal subgroups in finite groups

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and suppose that every maximal subgroup of a finite group is either $p$-nilpotent or has prime index. Such group need not be $p$-solvable, and we study its structure by proving that only one nonabelian simple group of order divisible by $p$, which belongs to the family ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$, can be involved in it. For $p=2$, we specify more, and in fact, such simple group must be isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2({r^a})$ for certain values of the prime $r$ and the parameter $a$.

Abstract:In this paper we consider two functions related to the arithmetic and geometric means of element orders of a finite group, showing that certain lower bounds on such functions strongly affect the group structure. In particular, for every prime p , we prove a sufficient condition for a finite group to be p -nilpotent, that is, a group whose elements of p′ -order form a normal subgroup. Moreover, we characterize finite cyclic groups with prescribed number of prime divisors.

Abstract:Abstract Inspired by a result of Kulikov about splitting of pure subgroups in discrete abelian p -groups we classify all locally compact abelian p -groups with no elements of infinite p -height in which every maximal monothetic subgroup splits. Descriptions of separable compact groups with elements of finite p -height, in which every pure monothetic subgroup splits, are obtained.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime. Following Snopce-Tanushevski, a pro-$p$ group $G$ is called Frattini-resistant if the function $H\mapsto\Phi(H)$, from the poset of all closed finitely-generated subgroups of $G$ into itself, is a poset embedding. We prove that for an oriented right-angled Artin pro-$p$ group (oriented pro-$p$ RAAG) $G$ associated to a directed graph the following four conditions are equivalent: the associated directed graph is of elementary type; $G$ is Frattini-resistant; every topologically finitely generated closed subgroup of $G$ is an oriented pro-$p$ RAAG; $G$ is the maximal pro-$p$ Galois group of a field containing a root of 1 of order $p$. Also, we conjecture that in the $\mathbb{Z}/p$-cohomology of a Frattini-resistant pro-$p$ group there are no essential triple Massey products.
