Abstract:We compare, following Pati, global symmetries our topological supersymmetric preon model with the heterotic E_8 x E_8 string theory. We include Pati's supergravity based preon model in this work and compare the preon interactions of his model to ours. Based on preon-string symmetry comparison and preon phenomenological results we conclude that the fundamental particles are likely preons rather than standard model particles.

Unfolding Particle Physics Hierarchies with Supersymmetry and Extra Dimensions

Abstract:This is a written version of lectures delivered at TASI 2022 ``Ten Years After the Higgs Discovery: Particle Physics Now and Future''. Mechanisms and symmetries beyond the Standard Model (BSM) are presented capable of elegantly and robustly generating the striking hierarchies we observe in particle physics. They are shown to be among the central archetypes of quantum effective field theory and to strongly resonate with the tight structure and phenomenology of the Standard Model itself, allowing one to motivate, develop and test a worthy successor. The (Little) Hiearchy Problem is discussed within this context. The lectures culminate in specific BSM case-studies, gaugino-mediated (dynamical) supersymmetry breaking to generate the weak/Planck hierarchy, and (in less detail) extra-dimensional wavefunction overlaps to generate flavor hierarchies.

Abstract:We review minimal realistic grand unified models based on $SU(5)$ and $SO(10)$ gauge groups. The models with small Higgs representations and higher dimensional operators - under the assumption of no cancellations in proton decay amplitudes - predict nearby oases with new light particles. Two of them stand out: real fermion and scalar weak triplets. The former generates dynamically neutrino Majorana mass through the so-called type III seesaw mechanism, while the latter naturally gets a small vacuum expectation value and thus generically modifies $W$-boson mass. On the contrary, the renormalisable versions of these theories fail to determine the particle spectra. In particular, in the renormalisable version of the $SO(10)$ theory the mass of the right-handed gauge boson - normally assumed (and allowed) to lie far in the desert - could be even accessible at the LHC. Last but not least, we show that in the minimal supersymmetric $SU(5)$ theory all the superpartners can lie orders of magnitude above the weak scale, unless one requires strict naturalness. Thus, the so-called split supersymmetry does not imply any light states.

Abstract:The spinors of the group Spin($N$) of rotations in $N$ spacetime dimensions are indexed by a bitcode with [$N$/2] bits. A well-known promising grand unified group that contains the standard-model group is Spin(10). Fermions in the standard model are described by five bits $yzrgb$, consisting of two weak bits $y$ and $z$, and three color bits $r$, $g$, $b$. If a sixth bit $t$ is added, necessary to accommodate a time dimension, then the enlarged Spin(11,1) geometric algebra contains the standard model and Dirac algebras as commuting subalgebras, unifying the four forces of Nature. There is a unique minimal symmetry-breaking chain and associated multiplet of Higgs fields that breaks Spin(11,1) to the standard model. Unification to the Pati-Salam group Spin(4)$_w {\times}$ Spin(6)$_c$ is predicted at $10^{12}\,$GeV, and grand unification at $10^{15}\,$GeV. The grand Higgs field breaks $t$-symmetry, can drive cosmological inflation, and generates a large Majorana mass for the right-handed neutrino by flipping its $t$-bit. The electroweak Higgs field breaks $y$-symmetry, and generates masses for fermions by flipping their $y$-bit.

Abstract:A case is made for an alternative approach to unification that is based on a {\it purely gauge origin of the fundamental forces}, and is thus devoid of the Higgs-sector altogether. This approach seems to call for the ideas of local supersymmetry and preons. The advantage of this marriage of the ideas of local supersymmetry and preons, subject to two broad dynamical assumptions which are specified, are noted. These include true economy and viability as well as an understanding of the origins of (a) family-replication, (b) inter-family mass-hierarchy, and (c) diverse mass-scales which span from $M_{Planck}$ to $m_W \sim m_t$ to $m_e$ to $m_\nu$. In short, the approach seems capable of providing {\it a unified origin of the forces, the families and the mass-scales}. In the process, the preonic approach provides the scope for synthesizing a rich variety of phenomena all of which could arise dynamically through one and the same tool -- the SUSY metacolor force coupled with gravity -- at the scale of $10^{11}GeV$. The phenomena include: (i) spontaneous violations of parity, CP, B-L and Peccei-Quinn symmetry, (ii) origin of heavy Majorana mass for $\nu_R$, (iii) SUSY breaking, (iv) origins of even $m_W,~m_q$ and $m_\ell$, as well as, (v) inflation and lepto/baryo-genesis. Some intriguing experimental consequences of the new approach which could show at LEPI, LEPII and Tevatron and a {\it crucial prediction} which can be probed at the LHC and NLC are presented.
A realistic theory of E6 unification through novel intermediate symmetries

Abstract:We propose a non-supersymmetric E 6 GUT with the scalar sector consisting of 650 ⨁ 351 ′ ⨁ 27 . Making use of the first representation for the initial symmetry breaking to an intermediate stage, and the latter two representations for second-stage breaking to the Standard Model and a realistic Yukawa sector, this theory represents the minimal E 6 GUT that proceeds through one of the intermediate stages that are novel compared to SU(5) or SO(10) GUT: trinification SU(3) C × SU(3) L × SU(3) R , SU(6) × SU(2) and flipped SO(10) × U(1). We analyze these possibilities under the choice of vacuum that preserves a Z 2 "spinorial parity", which disentangles the chiral and vector-like fermions of E 6 and provides a dark matter candidate in the form of a (scalar) inert doublet. Three cases are shown to consistently unify under the extended survival hypothesis (with minimal fine-tuning): trinification symmetry SU(3) C × SU(3) L × SU(3) R with either LR or CR parity, and SU(6) CR × SU(2) L . Although the successful cases give a large range for proton lifetime estimates, all of them include regions consistent with current experimental bounds and within reach of forthcoming experiments. The scenario investigated in this paper essentially represents the unique (potentially) viable choice in the class of E 6 GUTs proceeding through a novel-symmetry intermediate stage, since non-minimal alternatives seem to be intrinsically non-perturbative.

Abstract:Quantum theory, general relativity, the standard model of particle physics, and the $\Lambda$CDM model of cosmology have all been spectacularly successful within their respective regimes of applicability, but each of these descriptions also has clear limitations. Here we propose a fundamental theory which (like string theory) is based on higher dimensions (with an internal space), a form of supersymmetry, important topological structures, and the implication of a multiverse. Our universe is the product of two vortex-like (or instanton-like) field configurations -- one in 4-dimensional external spacetime, with the big bang at its origin, and the other in a 10-dimensional internal space, which automatically yields an $SO(10)$ grand-unified gauge theory. Lorentz invariance requires a breaking of the initial primitive supersymmetry, as the initial (unphysical) bosonic fields are modified and combined to from physical fields. There is then a new interpretation of all scalar boson sectors -- including but extending the Higgs and sfermion sectors. This last feature predicts a novel dark matter WIMP with no (nongravitational) interactions except second-order gauge couplings to $W$ and $Z$ bosons. Calculations and estimates of the relevant cross-sections for this particle demonstrate that (1)~it may be detectable within the next few years in Xe-based direct-detection experiments, (2)~it may be observable within about 15 years at the high-luminosity LHC, and (3)~it may already have been detected in the gamma rays observed by Fermi-LAT and antiprotons observed by AMS-02. The reinterpretation of scalar boson fields also implies a new phenomenology for sfermions, with reduced cross-sections. There is then a unified picture which may explain why dark matter WIMPs and electroweak-scale sparticles have not yet been detected.

Little Higgs Models and Their Phenomenology

Abstract:This article reviews the Little Higgs models of electroweak symmetry breaking and their phenomenology. Little Higgs models incorporate a light composite Higgs boson and remain perturbative until a scale of order 10 TeV, as required by precision electroweak data. The collective symmetry breaking mechanism, which forms the basis of Little Higgs models, is introduced. An explicit, fully realistic implementation of this mechanism, the Littlest Higgs model, is then discussed in some detail. Several other implementations, including simple group models and models with T parity, are also reviewed. Precision electroweak constraints on a variety of Little Higgs models are summarized. If a Little Higgs model is realized in nature, the predicted new particles should be observable at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The expected signatures, as well as the experimental sensitivities and the possible strategies for confirming the Little Higgs origin of new particles, are discussed. Finally, several other related topics are briefly reviewed, including the ultraviolet completions of Little Higgs models, as well as the implications of these models for flavor physics and cosmology.

Fermion Masses and Mixings in String Theory with Dirac Neutrinos

Abstract:Analyzing the supersymmetric Pati-Salam landscape on a $\mathbb{T}^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2)$ orientifold in IIA string theory, we have found only two models that accurately account for all standard model fermion masses and mixings. The models are dual to each other under the exchange of two SU(2) sectors and feature 12 adjoint scalars, the maximum number allowed in the landscape, whose linear combination yields the two light Higgs eigenstates. Dirac neutrino-masses in normal ordering $(50.4,~10.5,~6.1)~\mathrm{meV}$ satisfying the swampland constraints are predicted, a testable prospect for string phenomenology.

Abstract:After very little memories we review slightly Paul Frampton's memories from the discovery of Veneziano model being indeed string theory with Y. Nambu and secondly his 3-3-1 <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://theory.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> latter is an indeed not excluded replacement for the Standard Model with triangle anomalies cancelling as they must in a truly viable theory. It even needs (essentially) 3 as the family number! Also primordial black holes as dark matter is mentioned, we end with review of a my own very speculative utterly recent idea, that for the purpose of the classical approximation, we could, using the functional integral as our rudimentary assumption taken over from quantum mechanics, obtain the equations of motion without the in our opinion very mysterious imaginary unit i, which usually occurs as a factor in the exponent of the functional integrand, which is this i times the action. The functional integral without the mysterious i leads to predicting some of the most strong features in cosmology, and also seems to argue for as little black holes as possible.

BRST and Related Superfield Approach to a Few Interesting Models of Point Particles and a Model of Bosonic String: A Brief Review

Abstract:In this brief review-cum-research article, we discuss a few key aspects of the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, Curci-Ferrari (CF) type restriction(s), coupled Lagrangians/Lagrangian densities, etc., for the 1D diffeomorphism (i.e. reparameterization) invariant models of $(i)$ a non-relativistic and non-SUSY free particle, $(ii)$ a scalar (i.e. non-SUSY) relativistic free particle, $(iii)$ a spinning (i.e. SUSY) relativistic free particle, and $(iv)$ a 2D diffeomorphism invariant model of a specific bosonic string theory within the framework of BRST and related supervariable/superfield approach. We take up a new 1D diffeomorphism invariant model of an interacting scalar relativistic particle with the electromagnetic field. The latter is treated as a constant background variable and is, therefore, independent of the evolution parameter. We show that the universal nature of the CF-type restriction is maintained in the case of this new model, too. We exploit the modified Bonora-Tonin supervariable/superfield approach (MBTSA) to BRST formalism in the context of the 1D and 2D diffeomorphism invariant theories to prove the universal nature of the CF-type restriction(s). We further demonstrate that the 1D diffeomorphism invariant models of all kinds of particles are described by the singular Lagrangians. This singular nature has, to the best of our knowledge, not been explicitly shown elsewhere. Thus, these 1D models also respect the gauge symmetry transformations which are generated by the first-class constraints that exist on them. The equivalence of the 1D diffeomorphism and gauge symmetries is also established under specific conditions..

Abstract:The {\it string theory} seems to be a mathematically consistent way for explaining so far observed fermion and boson second quantized fields, with gravity included, by offering the renormalizability of the theory by extending the point fermions and bosons into strings and by offering the supersymmetry among fermions and bosons. In a long series of works one of the authors in collaboration with another author and other collaborators, has found the phenomenological success with the model named the {\it spin-charge-family} theory with the properties: The creation and annihilation operators for fermions and bosons fields are described as tensor products of the Clifford odd (for fermions) and the Clifford even (for bosons) ``basis vectors'' and basis in ordinary space, explaining the second quantization postulates. The theory offers the explanation for the observed properties of fermion and bosons and for several cosmological observations. Since the number of creation and annihilation operators for fermions and bosons is in this theory the same, manifesting correspondingly a kind of supersymmetry, the authors start to study in this contribution the properties of the creation and annihilation operators if extending the point fermions and bosons into strings, expecting that this theory offers the low energy limit for the {\it string theory}.

Abstract:With the apparent discovery of the Higgs boson, the Standard Model has been confirmed as the theory accounting for all sub-atomic phenomena. This observation lends further credence to the perturbative unification in Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) and string theories. The free fermionic formalism yielded fertile ground for the construction of quasi--realistic heterotic--string models, which correspond to toroidal Z2xZ2 orbifold compactifications. In this paper we study a new class of heterotic-string models in which the GUT group is SU(6)xSU(2) at the string level. We use our recently developed fishing algorithm to extract an example of a three generation SU(6)xSU(2) GUT model. We explore the phenomenology of the model and show that it contains the required symmetry breaking Higgs representations. We show that the model admits flat directions that produce a Yukawa coupling for a single family. The novel feature of the SU(6)xSU(2) string GUT models is that they produce an additional family universal anomaly free U(1)symmetry that may remain unbroken below the string scale. The massless spectrum of the model is free of exotic states.

Abstract:We review ideas relating the breaking of Supersymmetry in de Sitter (dS) space-time to amplitudes in which gravitinos are reflected from the dS horizon. A self consistent evaluation of such amplitudes leads to the estimate $m_{3/2} = K \Lambda^{1/4}$, with a constant $K$ that is not easily calculable. LHC bounds on superpartner masses, plus the structure of low energy effective field theory then imply that there must be new superfields with standard model quantum numbers in the region below $100$ TeV. Only one class of models, the Pyramid Schemes, has been found, which is compatible with one loop coupling unification. They have a new strongly coupled gauge sector with a confinement scale in the multi TeV region. We outline the general predictions of these models, which include Dirac gauginos and a novel solution of the strong CP problem. The models all appear to have a "little hierarchy problem": the expectation value of the standard model Higgs field, and its mass, must be a factor of $10$ or more smaller than the masses of the second Higgs doublet or standard model superpartners. Since all of these models contain uncertainties from the strong coupling physics, as well as the physics of the dS horizon, it is difficult to determine how serious this fine tuning problem is.

Abstract:$^1S_0$ pairing in nuclear matter is investigated by taking the hadron mass decrease into account via the ``In-Medium Bonn potential'' which was recently proposed by Rapp et al. The resulting gap is significantly reduced in comparison with the one obtained with the original Bonn-B potential and we ascertain that the meson mass decrease is mainly responsible for this reduction.

Abstract:Chiral bosons, or self-dual p-form fields, are ubiquitous in string theoretic contexts but are challenging to treat. Lagrangian constructions invariably introduce a complexity be it auxiliary fields or sacrificing Lorentz invariance. In this note we show how to pass between such different approaches to chiral bosons starting from a Chern Simons point of view to recover formulations of Pasti, Sorokin and Tonin and of Mkrtchyan. This leads to a novel generalisation of the latter to include non-Abelian chiral bosons in 2-dimensions, and generalisations to include twisted self-duality which are relevant in T-duality symmetric approaches to string theory. Our approach also shows how global affine symmetries of two- and higher-dimensional chiral bosons emerge from broken Chern-Simons gauge transformations on the boundary.

Abstract:A simple electronic circuit is described using four common and very inexpensive analog multiplexer/demultiplexer chips. These analog switches are used to select eight different wiring configurations to a van der Pauw sample. Several interfacing schemes to a PC are suggested. The van der Pauw resistivity and Hall voltage expressions are also summarized.

Abstract:Is there more to Dirac's gamma matrices than meets the eye? It turns out that gamma zero can be factorized into a product of three operators. This revelation facilitates the expansion of Dirac's space-time algebra to Clifford algebra Cl(0,6). The resultant rich geometric structure can be leveraged to establish a combined framework of the standard model and gravity, wherein a gravi-weak interaction between the extended vierbein field and the extended weak gauge field is allowed. Inspired by the composite Higgs model, we examine the vierbein field as an effective description of the fermion-antifermion condensation. The compositeness of space-time manifests itself at an energy scale which is different from the Planck scale. We propose that all the regular classical Lagrangian terms are of quantum condensation origin, thus possibly addressing the cosmological constant problem provided that we adopt an unconventional multi-scale renormalization procedure for quantum condensations that entail multiplications of divergent integrals. The Clifford algebra approach also permits a weaker form of charge conjugation without particle-antiparticle interchange, which leads to a Majorana-type mass that conserves lepton number. Additionally, in the context of spontaneous breaking of two global U(1) symmetries, we explore a three-Higgs-doublet model with Higgs VEVs 246 GeV, 41 GeV and 2.5 GeV which could explain the fermion mass hierarchies.

Although the unified algebra is that of Spin(11,1), the persistence of the electroweak Higgs field after grand symmetry breaking suggests that the gauge group before grand symmetry breaking is Spin(10,1), not the full group Spin(11,1). The running of coupling parameters predicts that the standard model should unify to the Pati-Salam group Spin(4)$_w \times$Spin(6)$_c$ at $10^{12}\,$GeV, and thence to Spin(10,1) at $10^{15}\,$GeV. The grand Higgs field breaks $t$-symmetry, can drive cosmological inflation, and generates a large Majorana mass for the right-handed neutrino by flipping its $t$-bit.
