Abstract:High-accuracy Multi-Configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of ionization energies with Configuration Interaction have been carried out for tungsten ions (W$^{2+}$ to W$^{71+}$) by means of the GRASP code. A comparison with other available experimental and theoretical data, including those calculated by FAC code based on the Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Slater method and with the NIST database has been presented. This work provides a new set of recommended ionization energy values for tungsten ions using state-of-the-art theoretical calculations with uncertainties ranging from 0.07 eV to 0.4 eV, which seems to be a significant improvement over the previous reference uncertainties.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is providing high-precision ionization energy data for tungsten ions (from W²⁺ to W⁷¹⁺). Specifically, the researchers conducted high-precision calculations using the GRASP 2018 code through the Multi-Configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock combined with Configuration Interaction (MCDHF-CI) method and compared the results with existing experimental and theoretical data. The main objectives of the paper include: 1. **Providing new recommended ionization energy values**: By using the latest theoretical calculation methods, the paper aims to provide a new set of high-precision ionization energy values for tungsten ions, with uncertainties ranging from 0.07 eV to 0.4 eV, significantly better than previous reference uncertainties. 2. **Verifying the accuracy of existing data**: By performing detailed calculations for tungsten ions with different charge states, the paper aims to verify the accuracy of ionization energy data in the NIST database and other literature. Particularly for some highly charged tungsten ions, existing NIST data may be underestimated. 3. **Filling data gaps**: In certain charge state ranges, there is currently a lack of directly measured experimental data. Therefore, high-precision theoretical calculations are used to fill these gaps. 4. **Improving calculation methods**: By evaluating the impact of electron correlation effects through different calculation strategies (such as full CI, CV, and ZF methods), the paper aims to select the most reliable method for calculating ionization energies. In summary, this paper aims to provide a complete and reliable set of ionization energy data for tungsten ions through high-precision theoretical calculations, supporting research and applications in fields such as plasma physics and materials science.
