Abstract:Query evaluation over probabilistic databases is notoriously intractable -- not only in combined complexity, but often in data complexity as well. This motivates the study of approximation algorithms, and particularly of combined FPRASes, with runtime polynomial in both the query and instance size. In this paper, we focus on tuple-independent probabilistic databases over binary signatures, i.e., probabilistic graphs, and study when we can devise combined FPRASes for probabilistic query evaluation. We settle the complexity of this problem for a variety of query and instance classes, by proving both approximability results and (conditional) inapproximability results doubled with (unconditional) DNNF provenance circuit size lower bounds. This allows us to deduce many corollaries of possible independent interest. For example, we show how the results of Arenas et al. on counting fixed-length strings accepted by an NFA imply the existence of an FPRAS for the two-terminal network reliability problem on directed acyclic graphs: this was an open problem until now. We also show that one cannot extend a recent result of van Bremen and Meel that gives a combined FPRAS for self-join-free conjunctive queries of bounded hypertree width on probabilistic databases: neither the bounded-hypertree-width condition nor the self-join-freeness hypothesis can be relaxed. We last show how our methods can give insights on the evaluation and approximability of regular path queries (RPQs) on probabilistic graphs in the data complexity perspective, showing in particular that some of them are (conditionally) inapproximable.

Abstract:A two-terminal graph G = (V, E) is a simple and undirected graph with two specified target vertices sand tin V. In G, if each edge survives independently with a fixed probability p, the two-terminal reliability is the probability that two target vertices are connected. A two-terminal graph is uniformly most reliable if its reliability is not less than the reliability of any other graph with same number of vertices and edges for all p. Betrand et al. proved that there is no uniformly most reliable two-terminal graph if either n >= 11 and 20 <= m <= 3n - 9 or n >= 8 and ((n)(2)) - [(n - 2)/2] <= m = ((n)(2)) - 2. Abstract:We introduce two new methods for approximating the all‐terminal reliability of undirected graphs. First, we introduce an edge removal process: remove edges at random, one at a time, until the graph becomes disconnected. We show that the expected number of edges thus removed is equal to (m+1)A , where m is the number of edges in the graph, and A is the average of the all‐terminal reliability polynomial. Based on this process, we propose a Monte‐Carlo algorithm to quickly estimate the graph reliability (whose exact computation is NP‐hard). Moreover, we show that the distribution of the edge removal process can be used to quickly approximate the reliability polynomial. We then propose increasingly accurate asymptotics for graph reliability based solely on degree distributions of the graph. These asymptotics are tested against several real‐world networks and are shown to be accurate for sufficiently dense graphs. While the approach starts to fail for "subway‐like" networks that contain many paths of vertices of degree two, different asymptotics are derived for such networks.

Abstract:We provide the first fully polynomial-time randomized approximation scheme for the following two counting problems: 1. Given a Context Free Grammar $G$ over alphabet $\Sigma$, count the number of words of length exactly $n$ generated by $G$. 2. Given a circuit $\varphi$ in Decomposable Negation Normal Form (DNNF) over the set of Boolean variables $X$, compute the number of assignments to $X$ such that $\varphi$ evaluates to 1. Finding polynomial time algorithms for the aforementioned problems has been a longstanding open problem. Prior work could either only obtain a quasi-polynomial runtime (SODA 1995) or a polynomial-time randomized approximation scheme for restricted fragments, such as non-deterministic finite automata (JACM 2021) or non-deterministic tree automata (STOC 2021).

Abstract:We propose an improved algorithm for counting the number of Hamiltonian cycles in a directed graph. The basic idea of the method is sequential acceptance/rejection, which is successfully used in approximating the number of perfect matchings in dense bipartite graphs. As a consequence, a new ratio of the number of Hamiltonian cycles to the number of 1-factors is proposed. Based on this ratio, we prove that our algorithm runs in expected time of O(n^8^.^5) for dense problems. This improves the Markov chain Monte Carlo method, the most powerful existing method, by a factor of at least n^4^.^5(logn)^4 in running time. This class of dense problems is shown to be nontrivial in counting, in the sense that they are #P-Complete.
Faster Approximation Algorithms for Restricted Shortest Paths in Directed Graphs

Abstract:In the restricted shortest paths problem, we are given a graph $G$ whose edges are assigned two non-negative weights: lengths and delays, a source $s$, and a delay threshold $D$. The goal is to find, for each target $t$, the length of the shortest $(s,t)$-path whose total delay is at most $D$. While this problem is known to be NP-hard [Garey and Johnson, 1979] $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximate algorithms running in $\tilde{O}(mn)$ time [Goel et al., INFOCOM'01; Lorenz and Raz, Oper. Res. Lett.'01] given more than twenty years ago have remained the state-of-the-art for directed graphs. An open problem posed by [Bernstein, SODA'12] -- who gave a randomized $m\cdot n^{o(1)}$ time bicriteria $(1+\varepsilon, 1+\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm for undirected graphs -- asks if there is similarly an $o(mn)$ time approximation scheme for directed graphs. We show two randomized bicriteria $(1+\varepsilon, 1+\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithms that give an affirmative answer to the problem: one suited to dense graphs, and the other that works better for sparse graphs. On directed graphs with a quasi-polynomial weights aspect ratio, our algorithms run in time $\tilde{O}(n^2)$ and $\tilde{O}(mn^{3/5})$ or better, respectively. More specifically, the algorithm for sparse digraphs runs in time $\tilde{O}(mn^{(3 - \alpha)/5})$ for graphs with $n^{1 + \alpha}$ edges for any real $\alpha \in [0,1/2]$.

Abstract:The calculation of network reliability in a probabilistic context has long been an issue of practical and academic importance. Conventional approaches (determination of bounds, sums of disjoint products algorithms, Monte Carlo evaluations, studies of the reliability polynomials, etc.) only provide approximations when the network's size increases, even when nodes do not fail and all edges have the same reliability p. We consider here a directed, generic graph of arbitrary size mimicking real-life long-haul communication networks, and give the exact, analytical solution for the two-terminal reliability. This solution involves a product of transfer matrices, in which individual reliabilities of edges and nodes are taken into account. The special case of identical edge and node reliabilities (p and rho, respectively) is addressed. We consider a case study based on a commonly-used configuration, and assess the influence of the edges being directed (or not) on various measures of network performance. While the two-terminal reliability, the failure frequency and the failure rate of the connection are quite similar, the locations of complex zeros of the two-terminal reliability polynomials exhibit strong differences, and various structure transitions at specific values of rho. The present work could be extended to provide a catalog of exactly solvable networks in terms of reliability, which could be useful as building blocks for new and improved bounds, as well as benchmarks, in the general case.
Undirected 3-Fault Replacement Path in Nearly Cubic Time

Abstract:Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and two vertices $s,t\in V$, the $f$-fault replacement path ($f$FRP) problem computes for every set of edges $F$ where $|F|\leq f$, the distance from $s$ to $t$ when edges in $F$ fail. A recent result shows that 2FRP in directed graphs can be solved in $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2209.07016" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2209.07016">arXiv:2209.07016</a>]. In this paper, we show a 3FRP algorithm in deterministic $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time for undirected weighted graphs, which almost matches the size of the output. This implies that $f$FRP in undirected graphs can be solved in almost optimal $\tilde{O}(n^f)$ time for all $f\geq 3$. To construct our 3FRP algorithm, we introduce an incremental distance sensitivity oracle (DSO) with $\tilde{O}(n^2)$ worst-case update time, while preprocessing time, space, and query time are still $\tilde{O}(n^3)$, $\tilde{O}(n^2)$ and $\tilde{O}(1)$, respectively, which match the static DSO [Bernstein and Karger 2009]. Here in a DSO, we can preprocess a graph so that the distance between any pair of vertices given any failed edge can be answered efficiently. From the recent result in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2211.05178" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.05178">arXiv:2211.05178</a>], we can obtain an offline dynamic DSO from the incremental worst-case DSO, which makes the construction of our 3FRP algorithm more convenient. By the offline dynamic DSO, we can also construct a 2-fault single-source replacement path (2-fault SSRP) algorithm in $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time, that is, from a given vertex $s$, we want to find the distance to any vertex $t$ when any pair of edges fail. Thus the $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time complexity for 2-fault SSRP is also almost optimal. Now we know that in undirected graphs 1FRP can be solved in $\tilde{O}(m)$ time [Nardelli, Proietti, Widmayer 2001], and 2FRP and 3FRP in undirected graphs can be solved in $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time. In this paper, we also show that a truly subcubic algorithm for 2FRP in undirected graphs does not exist under APSP-hardness conjecture.

Asymptotic analysis and efficient random sampling of directed ordered acyclic graphs

Abstract:Directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) are directed graphs in which there is no path from a vertex to itself. DAGs are an omnipresent data structure in computer science and the problem of counting the DAGs of given number of vertices and to sample them uniformly at random has been solved respectively in the 70's and the 00's. In this paper, we propose to explore a new variation of this model where DAGs are endowed with an independent ordering of the out-edges of each vertex, thus allowing to model a wide range of existing data structures. We provide efficient algorithms for sampling objects of this new class, both with or without control on the number of edges, and obtain an asymptotic equivalent of their number. We also show the applicability of our method by providing an effective algorithm for the random generation of classical labelled DAGs with a prescribed number of vertices and edges, based on a similar approach. This is the first known algorithm for sampling labelled DAGs with full control on the number of edges, and it meets a need in terms of applications, that had already been acknowledged in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the two-stage stochastic fault-tolerant facility location problem with uniform connectivity demand (2-SFTFLPUCD). We present the currently best known approximation ratio 1.8526 for 2-SFTFLPUCD. Initially, we demonstrate a stronger result of the 3-approximation algorithm based on analysis of the sum of opening and connection cost. Subsequently, we seed a greedy augmentation algorithm with the solution of a 3-approximation algorithm to yield an improved approximation ratio.

Asymptotics of the Minimal Feedback Arc Set in Erdős-Rényi Graphs

Abstract:Given a directed graph, the Minimal Feedback Arc Set (FAS) problem asks for a minimal set of arcs which, when removed, results in an acyclic graph. Equivalently, the FAS problem asks to find an ordering of the vertices that minimizes the number of feedback arcs. The FAS problem is considered an algorithmic problem of central importance in discrete mathematics. Our purpose in this paper is to consider the problem in the context of Erdős-Rényi random directed graphs, denoted $D(n,p)$, in which each possible directed arc is included with a fixed probability $p>0$. Our interest is the typical ratio of the number of feedforward arcs to the number of feedback arcs that are removed in the FAS problem. We show that as the number $n$ of vertices goes to infinity the probability that this ratio is greater than $1+\epsilon$ for any fixed $\epsilon > 0$ approaches zero. Similarly, letting $p$ go to zero as $n\rightarrow \infty$ this result remains true if $p>C\log{n}/n$ where $C$ depends on $\epsilon$.

A $\frac{4}{3}$-Approximation for the Maximum Leaf Spanning Arborescence Problem in DAGs

Abstract:The Maximum Leaf Spanning Arborescence problem (MLSA) is defined as follows: Given a directed graph $G$ and a vertex $r\in V(G)$ from which every other vertex is reachable, find a spanning arborescence rooted at $r$ maximizing the number of leaves (vertices with out-degree zero). The MLSA has applications in broadcasting, where a message needs to be transferred from a source vertex to all other vertices along the arcs of an arborescence in a given network. In doing so, it is desirable to have as many vertices as possible that only need to receive, but not pass on messages since they are inherently cheaper to build. We study polynomial-time approximation algorithms for the MLSA. For general digraphs, the state-of-the-art is a $\min\{\sqrt{\mathrm{OPT}},92\}$-approximation. In the (still APX-hard) special case where the input graph is acyclic, the best known approximation guarantee of $\frac{7}{5}$ is due to Fernandes and Lintzmayer: They prove that any $\alpha$-approximation for the \emph{hereditary $3$-set packing problem}, a special case of weighted $3$-set packing, yields a $\max\{\frac{4}{3},\alpha\}$-approximation for the MLSA in acyclic digraphs (dags), and provide a $\frac{7}{5}$-approximation for the hereditary $3$-set packing problem. In this paper, we obtain a $\frac{4}{3}$-approximation for the hereditary $3$-set packing problem, and, thus, also for the MLSA in dags. In doing so, we manage to leverage the full potential of the reduction provided by Fernandes and Lintzmayer. The algorithm that we study is a simple local search procedure considering swaps of size up to $10$. Its analysis relies on a two-stage charging argument.

Abstract:Non-deterministic read-once branching programs, also known as non-deterministic free binary decision diagrams (nFBDD), are a fundamental data structure in computer science for representing Boolean functions. In this paper, we focus on #nFBDD, the problem of model counting for non-deterministic read-once branching programs. The #nFBDD problem is #P-hard, and it is known that there exists a quasi-polynomial randomized approximation scheme for #nFBDD. In this paper, we provide the first FPRAS for #nFBDD. Our result relies on the introduction of new analysis techniques that focus on bounding the dependence of samples.

The approximate uniform sampling of graphs with a given degree sequence is a well-known, extensively studied problem in theoretical computer science and has significant applications, e.g., in the analysis of social networks. In this work we study a generalization of the problem, where degree intervals are specified instead of a single degree sequence. We are interested in sampling and counting graphs whose degree sequences satisfy the corresponding degree interval constraints. A natural scenario where this problem arises is in hypothesis testing on networks that are only partially observed. We provide the first fully polynomial almost uniform sampler (FPAUS) as well as the first fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme (FPRAS) for sampling and counting, respectively, graphs with near-regular degree intervals, i.e., graphs in which every node has a degree from an interval not too far away from a given [math]. In order to design our FPAUS, we rely on various state-of-the-art tools from Markov chain theory and combinatorics. In particular, by carefully using Markov chain decomposition and comparison arguments, we reduce part of our problem to the recent breakthrough of Anari et al. [Proceedings of the 51st Annual ACM SIGACT Symposium on Theory of Computing, 2019, pp. 1–12] on sampling a base of a matroid under a strongly log-concave probability distribution, and we provide the first nontrivial algorithmic application of a breakthrough asymptotic enumeration formula of Liebenau and Wormald [J. Eur. Math. Soc., 26 (2023), pp. 1–40]. As a more direct approach, we also study a natural Markov chain recently introduced by Rechner, Strowick and Müller-Hannemann [J. Complex Netw., 6 (2018), pp. 833–858], based on three local operations—switches, hinge flips, and additions/deletions of an edge. We obtain the first theoretical results for this Markov chain, showing it is rapidly mixing for the case of near-regular degree intervals of size at most one.

Abstract:This paper considers a natural fault-tolerant shortest paths problem: for some constant integer $f$, given a directed weighted graph with no negative cycles and two fixed vertices $s$ and $t$, compute (either explicitly or implicitly) for every tuple of $f$ edges, the distance from $s$ to $t$ if these edges fail. We call this problem $f$-Fault Replacement Paths ($f$FRP). We first present an $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time algorithm for $2$FRP in $n$-vertex directed graphs with arbitrary edge weights and no negative cycles. As $2$FRP is a generalization of the well-studied Replacement Paths problem (RP) that asks for the distances between $s$ and $t$ for any single edge failure, $2$FRP is at least as hard as RP. Since RP in graphs with arbitrary weights is equivalent in a fine-grained sense to All-Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP) [Vassilevska Williams and Williams FOCS'10, J.~ACM'18], $2$FRP is at least as hard as APSP, and thus a substantially subcubic time algorithm in the number of vertices for $2$FRP would be a breakthrough. Therefore, our algorithm in $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time is conditionally nearly optimal. Our algorithm implies an $\tilde{O}(n^{f+1})$ time algorithm for the $f$FRP problem, giving the first improvement over the straightforward $O(n^{f+2})$ time algorithm. Then we focus on the restriction of $2$FRP to graphs with small integer weights bounded by $M$ in absolute values. Using fast rectangular matrix multiplication, we obtain a randomized algorithm that runs in $\tilde{O}(M^{2/3}n^{2.9153})$ time. This implies an improvement over our $\tilde{O}(n^{f+1})$ time arbitrary weight algorithm for all $f>1$. We also present a data structure variant of the algorithm that can trade off pre-processing and query time. In addition to the algebraic algorithms, we also give an $n^{8/3-o(1)}$ conditional lower bound for combinatorial $2$FRP algorithms in directed unweighted graphs.

Abstract:The hypergraph unreliability problem asks for the probability that a hypergraph gets disconnected when every hyperedge fails independently with a given probability. For graphs, the unreliability problem has been studied over many decades, and multiple fully polynomial-time approximation schemes are known starting with the work of Karger (STOC 1995). In contrast, prior to this work, no non-trivial result was known for hypergraphs (of arbitrary rank).

Abstract:Finding a minimum-weight strongly connected spanning subgraph of an edge-weighted directed graph is equivalent to the weighted version of the well-known strong connectivity augmentation problem. This problem is NP-hard, and a simple $2$-approximation algorithm was proposed by Frederickson and Jájá (1981); surprisingly, it still achieves the best known approximation ratio in general. Also, Bang-Jensen and Yeo (2008) showed that the unweighted problem is FPT (fixed-parameter tractable) parameterized by the difference from a trivial upper bound of the optimal value. In this paper, we consider a generalization related to the Dulmage--Mendelsohn decompositions of bipartite graphs instead of the strong connectivity of directed graphs, and extend these approximation and FPT results to the generalized setting.

Abstract:Boesch et al. conjectured that for any n and m there exists a uniformly optimal (n,m)–graph Gn,m for all terminal reliability, that is, the all-terminal reliability of Gn,m is at least as large as the all-terminal reliability of any other graph G with n vertices and m edges, no matter what the probability of an edge being operational is. Although there are counterexamples known when one restricts attention to simple graphs, the conjecture remains open when one allows parallel edges. We consider the analogous problem for strongly connected reliability, that is, the probability that a digraph contains a spanning strongly connected subdigraph, given that each vertex is operational, but arcs are independently operational with probability p. We show that there do indeed exist uniformly optimal digraphs for strongly connected (n,m)–digraphs. Abstract:In many fault detection problems, we want to detect or identify defective items in a sample set by using the minimum number of tests. Group testing is for the scenario where each test is on a subset of items, and tells whether the subset contains at least one defective item or not. Another practically important problem is to estimate the number of defective items in a sample set. In this paper, we present an efficient FPRAS (fully polynomial-time randomized approximation scheme) type group testing procedure to approximate the number of defective items in a sample set.
