Abstract:We consider transport through a non-Hermitian conductor connected to a pair of Hermitian leads and analyze the underlying non-Hermitian scattering problem. In a typical non-Hermitian system, such as a Hatano--Nelson-type asymmetric hopping model, the continuity of probability and probability current is broken at a local level. As a result, the notion of transmission and reflection probabilities becomes ill-defined. Instead of these probabilities, we introduce the injection rate $R_{\rm I}=1-|{\cal R}|^2$ and the transmission rate $R_{\rm T}=|{\cal T}|^2$ as relevant physical quantities, where ${\cal T}$ and ${\cal R}$ are the transmission and reflection amplitudes, respectively. In a generic non-Hermitian case, $R_{\rm I}$ and $R_{\rm T}$ have independent information. We provide a modified continuity equation in terms of incoming and outgoing currents, from which we derive a global probability conservation law that relates $R_{\rm I}$ and $R_{\rm T}$. We have tested the usefulness of our probability conservation law in the interpretation of numerical results for non-Hermitian localization and delocalization phenomena.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problems of probability conservation and localization in non - Hermitian systems. Specifically, the author focuses on the transmission problem in a non - Hermitian conductor connected to a pair of Hermitian leads and analyzes the corresponding non - Hermitian scattering problem. In typical non - Hermitian systems, such as the Hatano - Nelson - type asymmetric hopping model, local probability continuity and probability current are broken, causing the traditional concepts of transmission and reflection probabilities to no longer be applicable. Therefore, the author introduces the injection rate \(R_I = 1-|R|^2\) and the transmittance \(R_T = |T|^2\) as new physical quantities and proposes a modified continuity equation to describe the global probability conservation law. Through this method, the author tests the effectiveness of its probability conservation law in explaining the numerical results of localization and delocalization phenomena in non - Hermitian systems. ### Main problems and solutions 1. **Problems**: - In non - Hermitian systems, the traditional probability conservation and continuity equations no longer hold. - The concepts of transmission and reflection probabilities become unclear. 2. **Solutions**: - Introduce the injection rate \(R_I = 1 - |R|^2\) and the transmittance \(R_T=|T|^2\) as new physical quantities. - Propose a modified continuity equation: \[ \frac{\partial\rho_n(t)}{\partial t}=j^{(in)}_n(t)-j^{(out)}_n(t)+\frac{2\gamma_n}{\hbar}\rho_n(t) \] where \(j^{(in)}_n(t)\) and \(j^{(out)}_n(t)\) represent the probability currents flowing into and out of the \(n\) - th site, respectively. - Obtain the global probability conservation law by iterating these equations: \[ R_T=\left(\frac{\Gamma_R}{\Gamma_L}\right)^{N - 1}(1-|R|^2)+\sum_{n = 1}^N\left(\frac{\Gamma_R}{\Gamma_L}\right)^{N - n}\frac{\gamma_n\rho_n}{\Gamma\sin(ka)} \] ### Numerical tests The author verifies the effectiveness of these newly - defined physical quantities and the global probability conservation law through numerical experiments. Specifically: - For different disorder strengths \(W/\Gamma\) and non - Hermitian parameters \(\gamma/\Gamma\), calculate \(-\langle\log R_T\rangle\) and \(-\langle\log R_I\rangle\). - It is found that under certain conditions, the system will undergo a localization - delocalization transition, which can be observed by the behaviors of \(-\langle\log R_T\rangle\) and \(-\langle\log R_I\rangle\). ### Conclusion The author has successfully developed a more general framework for dealing with the apparent failure of probability conservation in non - Hermitian systems. By introducing new physical quantities and a modified continuity equation, they can better understand and explain the transmission phenomena in non - Hermitian systems, especially the localization and delocalization phenomena. These results are of great significance for further research on the transmission properties of non - Hermitian systems.
