Abstract:In this paper, a PDE-ODE model with discontinuity in the flux as well as a flux constraint is analyzed. A modified Riemann solution is proposed and the existence of a weak solution to the Cauchy problem is rigorously investigated using the wavefront tracking scheme.

Abstract:We consider a strongly coupled ODE-PDE system representing moving bottlenecks immersed in vehicular traffic. The PDE consists of a scalar conservation law modeling the traffic flow evolution and the ODE models the trajectory of a slow moving vehicle. The moving bottleneck influences the bulk traffic flow via a point flux constraint, which is given by an inequality on the flux at the slow vehicle position. We prove uniqueness and continuous dependence of solutions with respect to initial data of bounded variation. The proof is based on a new backward in time method established to capture the values of the norm of generalized tangent vectors at every time.

Abstract:The paper is concerned with a scalar conservation law with discontinuous gradient-dependent flux. Namely, the flux is described by two different functions $f(u)$ or $g(u)$, when the gradient $u_x$ of the solution is positive or negative, respectively. We study here the unstable case where $f(u)>g(u)$ for all $u\in {\mathbb R}$. Assuming that both $f$ and $g$ are strictly convex, solutions to the Riemann problem are constructed. Even for smooth initial data, examples show that infinitely many solutions can occur. For an initial data which is piecewise monotone, i.e., increasing or decreasing on a finite number of intervals, a global solution of the Cauchy problem is obtained. It is proved that such solution is unique under the additional requirement that the number of interfaces, where the flux switches between $f$ and $g$, remains as small as possible.

Abstract:This paper analyzes a two-by-two Temple-type system of conservation laws with discontinuous flux, focusing on applications in traffic modeling. We prove the existence of entropy solutions for initial data with sufficiently small total variation. Additionally, we explicitly construct the corresponding Riemann solver and examine its key properties. To illustrate the impact of the discontinuous flux on the solution, we also present numerical simulations.

A front tracking algorithm is introduced, proving that piecewise constant approximations converge to the trajectories of a contractive semigroup on $\mathbf{L}^1({\mathbb R})$. In the spatially periodic case, we prove that semigroup trajectories coincide with the unique limits of a suitable class of vanishing viscosity approximations.

Abstract:We study the nonhomogeneous boundary value problem for Navier–Stokes equations of steady motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in a two-dimensional, bounded, multiply connected domain Ω = Ω_1 \Ω_2, Ω_2⊂Ω_1 . We prove that this problem has a solution if the flux ℱ of the boundary value through ∂Ω 2 is nonnegative (inflow condition). The proof of the main result uses the Bernoulli law for a weak solution to the Euler equations and the one-sided maximum principle for the total head pressure corresponding to this solution.

Abstract:For the Cauchy problem with a kind of non-smooth initial data for weakly linearly degenerate hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with the linear damping term, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global weakly discontinuous solution u = u(t, x) containing only n weak discontinuities with small amplitude on t ≥ 0, and this solution possesses a global structure similar to that of the similarity solution $u = U(\frac{x}{t})$ of the corresponding homogeneous Riemann problem. As an application of our result, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of global weakly discontinuous solution, continuous and piecewise C 1 solution with discontinuous first order derivatives, of the flow equations of a model class of fluids with viscosity induced by fading memory.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of entropy solutions (e.s.) to a conservation law with an arbitrary jump continuous flux vector and prove existence of the largest and the smallest e.s. to the Cauchy problem. The monotonicity and stability properties of these solutions are also established. In the case of a periodic initial function we derive the uniqueness of e.s. Generally, the uniqueness property can be violated, which is confirmed by an example. Finally, we proved that in the case of single space variable a weak limit of a sequence of spatially periodic e.s. is an e.s. as well.

Abstract:A variety of real-world applications are modeled via hyperbolic conservation laws. To account for uncertainties or insufficient measurements, random coefficients may be incorporated. These random fields may depend discontinuously on the state space, e.g., to represent permeability in a heterogeneous or fractured medium. We introduce a suitable admissibility criterion for the resulting stochastic discontinuous-flux conservation law and prove its well-posedness. Therefore, we ensure the pathwise existence and uniqueness of the corresponding deterministic setting and present a novel proof for the measurability of the solution, since classical approaches fail in the discontinuous-flux case. As an example of the developed theory, we present a specific advection coefficient, which is modeled as a sum of a continuous random field and a pure jump field. This random field is employed in the stochastic conservation law, in particular a stochastic Burgers' equation, for numerical experiments. We approximate the solution to this problem via the Finite Volume method and introduce a new meshing strategy that accounts for the resulting standing wave profiles caused by the flux-discontinuities. The ability of this new meshing method to reduce the sample-wise variance is demonstrated in numerous numerical investigations.

Abstract:We consider a class of nonlocal conservation laws with an interaction kernel supported on the negative real half-line and featuring a decreasing jump at the origin. We provide, for the first time, an existence and uniqueness theory for said model with initial data in the space of probability measures. Our concept of solution allows to sort a lack of uniqueness problem which we exhibit in a specific example. Our approach uses the so-called \emph{quantile}, or \emph{pseudo-inverse} formulation of the PDE, which has been largely used for similar types of nonlocal transport equations in one-space dimension. Partly related to said approach, we then provide a deterministic particle approximation theorem for the equation under consideration, which works for general initial data in the space of probability measures with compact support. As a crucial step in both results, we use that our concept of solution (which we call \emph{dissipative measure solution}) implies an instantaneous \emph{measure-to-$L^\infty$} smoothing effect, a property which is known to be featured as well by local conservation laws with genuinely nonlinear fluxes.

Abstract:We prove existence of a unique global-in-time weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations that govern the motion of a compressible viscous fluid with density-dependent viscosity in two-dimensional space. The initial velocity belongs to the Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)$, and the initial fluid density is $\alpha$-Hölder continuous on both sides of a $\mathscr{C}^{1+\alpha}$-regular interface with some geometrical assumption. We prove that this configuration persists over time: the initial interface is transported by the flow to an interface that maintains the same regularity as the initial one. Our result generalizes previous known of Hoff [21], Hoff and Santos [22] concerning the propagation of regularity for discontinuity surfaces by allowing more general nonlinear pressure law and density-dependent viscosity. Moreover, it supplements the work by Danchin, Fanelli and Paicu [6] with global-in-time well-posedness, even for density-dependent viscosity and we achieve uniqueness in a large space.

Abstract:We study a class of nonlinear nonlocal conservation laws with discontinuous flux, modeling crowd dynamics and traffic flow, without any additional conditions on finiteness/discreteness of the set of discontinuities or on the monotonicity of the kernel/the discontinuous coefficient. Strong compactness of the Godunov and Lax-Friedrichs type approximations is proved, providing the existence of entropy solutions. A proof of the uniqueness of the adapted entropy solutions is provided, establishing the convergence of the entire sequence of finite volume approximations to the adapted entropy solution. As per the current literature, this is the first well-posedness result for the aforesaid class and connects the theory of nonlocal conservation laws (with discontinuous flux), with its local counterpart in a generic setup. Some numerical examples are presented to display the performance of the schemes and explore the limiting behavior of these nonlocal conservation laws to their local counterparts.

Abstract:Consider a balance law where the flux depends explicitly on the space variable. At jump discontinuities, modeling considerations may impose the defect in the conservation of some quantities, thus leading to non conservative products. Below, we deduce the evolution in the smooth case from the jump conditions at discontinuities. Moreover, the resulting framework enjoys well posedness and solutions are uniquely characterized. These results apply, for instance, to the flow of water in a canal with varying width and depth, as well as to the inviscid Euler equations in pipes with varying geometry.

Abstract:Consider a scalar conservation law with a spatially discontinuous flux at a single point x=0, and assume that the flux is uniformly convex when x\neq 0. Given an interface connection (A,B), we define a backward solution operator consistent with the concept of AB-entropy solution [4,13,16]. We then analyze the family A^{[AB]}(T) of profiles that can be attained at time T>0 by AB-entropy solutions with L^\infty-initial data. We provide a characterization of A^{[AB]}(T) as fixed points of the backward-forward solution operator. As an intermediate step we establish a full characterization of A^{[AB]}(T) in terms of unilateral constraints and Ole\vınik-type estimates, valid for all connections. Building on such a characterization we derive uniform BV bounds on the flux of AB-entropy solutions, which in turn yield the L^1_{loc}-Lipschitz continuity in time of these solutions.

Abstract:This paper studies isentropic solutions of quasilinear first-order equations with two independent variables and a flux function that is only continuous. The isentropic solutions are characterized by the requirement that the S. N. Kruzhkov entropy conditions hold for these solution with the equality sign. It turns out that the existence of a nonconstant isentropic solution imposes rather strong restrictions on the nonlinearity. In particular, it is shown that on the minimal interval containing the essential image of the isentropic solution, the flux function satisfies the local Lipschitz condition, and its generalized derivative is a function of locally bounded variation. Also, it is proved that when the flux function is nonlinear, any isentropic solution is continuous on nondegenerate intervals.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on finite volume approximation schemes to solve a non-local material flow model in two space dimensions. Based on the numerical discretisation with dimensional splitting, we prove the convergence of the approximate solutions, where the main difficulty arises in the treatment of the discontinuity occurring in the flux function. In particular, we compare a Roe-type scheme to the well-established Lax-Friedrichs method and provide a numerical study highlighting the benefits of the Roe discretisation. Besides, we also prove the L1-Lipschitz continuous dependence on the initial datum, ensuring the uniqueness of the solution.

Abstract:We study the nonhomogeneous boundary value problem for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations under the slip boundary conditions in two-dimensional multiply-connected bounded domains. Employing the approach of Korobkov-Pileckas-Russo (Ann. Math. 181(2), 769-807, 2015), we prove that this problem has a solution if the friction coefficient is sufficiently large compared with the kinematic viscosity constant and the curvature of the boundary. No additional assumption (other than the necessary requirement of zero total flux through the boundary) is imposed on the boundary data. We also show that such an assumption on the friction coefficient is redundant for the existence of a solution in the case when the fluxes across each connected component of the boundary are sufficiently small, or the domain and the given data satisfy certain symmetry conditions. The crucial ingredient of our proof is the fact that the total head pressure corresponding to the solution to the steady Euler equations takes a constant value on each connected component of the boundary.
