Abstract:In this paper, we propose a shot percentage distribution strategy among the players of a basketball team to maximize the score that can be achieved by them. The approach is based on the concepts of game theory related to network flow.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main objective of this paper is to propose a game theory-based approach to optimize the shot distribution strategy of a basketball team in order to maximize the team's score. Specifically, the authors attempt to address the following issues: 1. **Optimizing Team Score**: By reasonably allocating players' shooting opportunities during the game, the overall team score can be maximized. 2. **Considering Player Performance Variations**: Unlike previous studies that usually assume constant player performance, this paper takes into account the reality that players' shooting behavior changes as the game progresses. 3. **Avoiding "Selfish" Strategies**: The paper points out that simply passing the ball to the player with the highest shooting percentage may not be the best strategy, as this can lead to "Nash equilibrium"-like selfish behavior, which does not necessarily maximize the overall team benefit. To achieve the above goals, the paper employs the following methods: - **Analogy between Network Flow Theory and Basketball Games**: Viewing the passing sequence in a basketball game as a network flow problem, where players are nodes and passes are edges. - **Application of Game Theory**: Using concepts from game theory (such as the "price of anarchy") to analyze team performance under different strategies and seek the optimal solution. - **Constructing a Player Shooting Behavior Model**: By analyzing players' game data, a linear model is established to reflect the changes in players' shooting performance as the game progresses. - **Optimization Function and Constraints**: Defining an objective function that needs to be maximized, which comprehensively considers each player's shooting proportion and performance, and setting reasonable constraints to ensure the feasibility of the solution. Through simulation experiments using data from the Washington Wizards, the paper finds that the proposed strategy, which considers changes in players' shooting behavior, significantly improves the team's scoring efficiency compared to several other common strategies. This indicates that adopting more refined strategy adjustments in actual games can effectively enhance team performance.
