Abstract:In our educational institution, despite significant progress in educational achievements, there is a prevalent issue of mathematics lessons focusing on rote memorization and superficial understanding, leading to learner dissatisfaction. This study presents a research project conducted by a group of five individuals, including myself as a teacher researcher and four other teachers. The project aimed to address this issue by employing a participatory action research approach. Through innovative planning, teaching, and evaluation methods, the research group successfully demonstrated how making mathematics more relevant and meaningful can increase student engagement and agency. The collaborative nature of the group fostered self-awareness among the teacher researchers regarding social justice issues within their mathematics classrooms. The research project highlighted the potential of mathematics as a powerful tool for developing students’ understanding of social justice issues and establishing meaningful connections between these issues and mathematical concepts. Importantly, the project emphasized the significance of student agency, showcasing how collaborative and problem-solving approaches to teaching, coupled with student autonomy in selecting issues to explore and mathematical procedures to apply, can contribute to the development of student agency.
Reading Behind Bars: Literacy and Survival in U.S. Prison Literature

Abstract:This paper unpacks the contradiction between the benefits of literacy and the punitive prison policies that seek to curb or regulate reading by beginning with the complicated historical relationship between incarceration and literacy. I then turn to the testimonies of two prominent incarcerated autodidacts who I now regularly teach within my prison literature classes both on my university campus and at a men’s prison. The writings of Malcolm X and Etheridge Knight model the difficulties of negotiating the institutional risks and personal and political rewards of learning to read and write behind bars—particularly while Black. What is more, while literacy may provide an “on-ramp” toward higher education, barriers for incarcerated people continue to proliferate in our current era in the form of book bans, paywalls, and the material conditions of prisons themselves.
A Peer-Tutored, Instructional Management Program in Computational Mathematics for Incarcerated, Learning Disabled Juvenile Delinquents

Abstract:This study examined the feasibility of an instructional management program for learning disabled, incarcerated youths. It compared peer tutors and learning disabilities teachers as implementers of a computational mathematics program for incarcerated, learning disabled juvenile delinquents. Thirty-eight learning disabled juvenile delinquents ranging in age from 12 to 17 years and ranging in grade from seventh to eleventh were instructed for eight weeks. The instructional management of learning disabled, juvenile delinquents using peer tutors was found to be a workable alternative when individualizing a computational mathematics program for these students.

Mathematics Learning, Teaching, and Equity in Policy and Programs: The Case of Secondary Mathematics Teacher Education in the United States

Abstract:Professional organizations have provided recommendations for mathematics teaching and learning; however, few studies have investigated the practical integration of those recommendations into mathematics teacher education programs. In this study, we examine how the reported “big ideas” of courses in secondary mathematics teacher education programs emphasized the content and teaching practices necessary for future mathematics teachers, as recommended by policy documents. As part of a larger study, we conducted a series of interviews in secondary mathematics teacher education programs at four universities (names are descriptive pseudonyms): Great Lakes University (GLU), Midwestern Research University (MRU), Midwestern Urban University (MUU), and Southeastern Research University (SRU). We selected the institutions and programs based on their Carnegie Classification, the types of communities in which they were situated, the average number of graduates from a program, the departmental homes of their secondary mathematics education programs, and the demographics of their student populations. The analysis of data collected from 12 courses across four universities revealed specific ways in which big ideas in secondary mathematics teacher education programs emphasized areas related to mathematics learning, teaching, and issues of equity and access.
Flipping the Math Classroom for Non-Math Majors to Enrich Their Learning Experience

Abstract:Students’ learning experiences in an introductory statistics course for non-math majors are compared between two different instructional approaches under controlled conditions. Two sections of the course (n = 52) are taught using a flipped classroom approach and one section (n = 30) is taught using a traditional lecture approach. All sections are taught by the same instructor in the same semester. General perceptions as well as students’ understanding and retention of the course material are measured and compared. The flipped classroom students outperform their traditional lecture peers on exams, especially in terms of their mathematical problem-solving skills. The flipped classroom students are also more confident than their traditional lecture peers about their abilities and their understanding of the course material, crediting their understanding primarily to the in-class activities, which are made possible because the flipped classroom design promotes an experiential, active-learning environment without compromising content.

Abstract:This essay describes a class in a maximum-security prison that brought civilian college students and incarcerated learners together. The authors, one a professor of communication and one a sociologist, team-taught the class as a cross-disciplinary and cross-community partnership, designed to promote greater understanding between prisons and higher education communities. Students explored the two faces of education in the U.S.: on one hand, as a public good that spreads knowledge and opens doors to social mobility, and on the other, as an institution that reproduces social inequalities (such as the school-to-prison pipeline). The professors anticipated that these encounters would spark critical consciousness and a desire to work for social justice. However, the most salient part of the experience for both groups of learners turned out to be the affirmation their own humanity and the humanity of others through interactions that built a sense of community and caring.

Abstract:We obtained 180 pre- and post-test surveys to investigate how an established financial literacy program may have increased financial knowledge of residents in a work release program in Augusta, Georgia. Paired t tests analyzed changes in subjective and objective financial knowledge, understanding of banking and credit, and financial attitudes. OLS regressions of pre- and post-test financial knowledge were guided by human capital theory to learn which program participant characteristics were associated with greater increase in knowledge and infer why. Education, age, and use of financial tools were significant predictors in the pretest. Controlling for pretest knowledge, there were significant, positive differences from pre- to post-test, regardless of race. Implications for further research and specific suggestions for financial education content for the incarcerated are provided.

Abstract:We identified three most challenging points related to diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DEI) issues. First, the majority of our students entering the College lack the math skills essential to success in Calculus, as basic as College Algebra, some others have a multi-year gap after graduating high school. Almost all but a few STEM students must start from College Algebra before they can move on to Precalculus and then Calculus. Secondly, we noted that many students who planned to pursue STEM dropped out of their majors because they couldn't obtain the required grade in College Algebra to move forward. This is one of the main reasons that the enrollment of calculus classes is consistently low. Lastly, a large portion of basic math classes are taught by adjunct instructors, the turnover ratio among adjunct instructors is not small. One such consequence is that many students don't have equitable learning experiences and some students are still struggling with College Algebra even in the calculus class. In this paper, we describe an illustrative case study of a college-wide initiative to tackle the DEI issues.
Using Field Trips to Create Relevant Social Justice Informed Mathematics Lessons in an Elementary Teacher Education Program: An Action Research Study

Abstract:Teaching mathematics for social justice is a rich research area in which field trips have been under examined. The paucity of literature on math-based field trips for social justice, specifically, warrants further investigation. This action research study aims to improve our practice of empowering elementary preservice teachers to design math-based field trips to enhance student awareness of social justice issues. Two research questions (RQ) guided this project: (RQ1) How can teacher educators inspire social change within math education via the preparation of future elementary teachers using math-based field trips? (RQ2) What are preservice teachers' perceptions of designing socially just math lessons using fieldtrips? We provide an overview of previous literature, describe the project we designed, and provide an analysis of preservice teachers' experiences and perceptions of this project. Thematic analysis of student journals and final assignments generated eight overarching themes and three subordinate themes organized by three phases. Organization by phases indicates a structural approach that teacher educators may use when introducing a similar activity. Further analysis revealed elementary preservice teachers emphasized the beneficial challenge of this assignment, suggesting that math-based social justice field trips are important additions to teacher education programs. Finally, we discuss what we learned from this study as teacher educators and researchers and provide recommendations to the field of teacher education.
Formative Learning Experiences of Urban Mathematics Teachers’ and Their Role in Classroom Care Practices and Student Belonging

Abstract:Mathematics teachers’ preteaching experiences as mathematics learners can affect their identity and practice in supporting their own students’ learning and motivation in mathematics. However, little empirical data exist on teachers’ formative experiences to guide these assumptions, particularly how teachers draw on these experiences when teaching, motivating, and caring for underserved students of color. This exploratory sequential mixed-methods study examines the formative mathematical experiences of 12 teachers currently serving Black and Latinx adolescents in an urban school district with concentrated poverty. Semi-structured interviews allowed teachers to reflect on their formative experiences as mathematics students, structured classroom observations assessed their current classroom care practices as teachers, and finally, questionnaires and a standardized mathematics assessment were used to examine their students’ ( n = 329) mathematical outcomes. This integration of methods provided three levels of inquiry for triangulation and interpretation. Results showed that teachers developed an ethic of perseverance through their formative experiences, which closely tied to their mathematics identity. However, teachers’ perceptions on what enabled them to persevere through challenges as students (i.e., people-support vs. personal-initiative) revealed clear differences in the emotional and instructional support techniques they provided in their classrooms and subsequently their students’ sense of belonging in mathematics. Teachers who discussed the role of people-support in their formative reflections were more likely to possess a critical consciousness on the interpersonal and systemic forces that work against Black and Latinx adolescents and thus enact empathetic care patterns. Furthermore, their observed classroom care patterns mediated the relation between their formative experiences and their students’ sense of belonging in mathematics.

Abstract:Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print. To address instructional challenges and poor academic outcomes of youth in juvenile correctional facilities (JCFs), we must understand how and why some teachers are effective and why students are responsive to instruction in these settings. We observed and coded teacher–student instructional interactions from 733 fifteen-minute classroom reading sessions for seven teachers and 40 students in a secure JCF school. We then applied a series of time-window sequential analytic procedures to assess connections between instructional approaches and teacher behaviors, and contingent student engagement and response behaviors. We also compared contingent probabilities for students with disabilities and students without disabilities. Across all students, our observations were characterized by larger proportions of passive student engagement. We also found a relatively low use of teacher praise. When teachers provided either directives or opportunities to respond, conditional probabilities for appropriate student responses were higher across students, particularly when directives were provided to students with disabilities. We discuss additional results and implications for research and practice.

Abstract:Self-efficacy and digital literacy are key predictors to incarcerated people's success in the modern workplace. While digitization in correctional facilities is expanding, few templates exist for how to design computing curricula that foster self-efficacy and digital literacy in carceral environments. As a result, formerly incarcerated people face increasing social and professional exclusion post-release. We report on a 12-week college-accredited web design class, taught virtually and synchronously, across 5 correctional facilities across the United States. The program brought together men and women from gender-segregated facilities into one classroom to learn fundamentals in HTML, CSS and Javascript, and create websites addressing social issues of their choosing. We conducted surveys with participating students, using dichotomous and open-ended questions, and performed thematic and quantitative analyses of their responses that suggest students' increased self-efficacy. Our study discusses key design choices, needs, and recommendations for furthering computing curricula that foster self-efficacy and digital literacy in carceral settings.

Abstract:We present findings from a study about obstacles that Black students who succeeded in developmental mathematics in community college reported having endured in those mathematics classrooms. To understand the types of obstacles that can arise for students in these classrooms, we analyze data using two frameworks: mathematics identity and dimensions of mathematics classrooms. Study participants faced obstacles in three categories: (a) impressions of faculty’s instructional practices for problem solving; (b) negative race-related perceptions they believed classmates had about them; and (c) perceptions about instructors’ expectations. These findings contribute to literature on Black students’ progress in mathematics by identifying obstacles experienced by students who achieve in these courses and can also inform professional development learning for mathematics faculty.

Inmate Mental Health and the Pains of Imprisonment

Abstract:We use national data on 5,552 inmates and the 214 state prisons in which they reside to examine how prison conditions are associated with mental health symptoms net of individual-level factors. Structural equation models indicate that prison overcrowding and punitiveness are positively related to both depression and hostility, while the availability of work assignments is negatively related to both mental health indicators. The proportion of inmates whose home is more than 50 miles from the prison was positively associated with depression. Inmates reported higher levels of hostility when the prison did not allow television and there was a recent prison suicide. These results suggest the importance of examining a wide range of prison deprivations in research on inmate well-being to lay the groundwork for understanding the mechanisms through which prison deprivations are linked to mental health.

Abstract:An influential literature in criminology has identified indirect “collateral consequences” of mass imprisonment. We extend this criminological perspective to the context of the U.S. education system, conceptualizing exclusionary discipline practices (i.e., out-of-school suspension) as a manifestation of intensified social control in schools. Similar to patterns of family and community decline associated with mass incarceration, we theorize that exclusionary discipline policies have indirect adverse effects on non-suspended students in punitive schools. Using a large hierarchical and longitudinal dataset consisting of student and school records, we examine the effect of suspension on reading and math achievement. Our findings suggest that higher levels of exclusionary discipline within schools over time generate collateral damage, negatively affecting the academic achievement of non-suspended students in punitive contexts. This effect is strongest in schools with high levels of exclusionary discipline and schools with low levels of violence, although the adverse effect of exclusionary discipline is evident in even the most disorganized and hostile school environments. Our results level a strong argument against excessively punitive school policies and suggest the need for alternative means of establishing a disciplined environment through social integration.

Abstract:The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought increased attention to the critical mathematical literacy of citizens in the United States and around the world. A statistically and mathematically literate society is crucial for ensuring that citizens are able to sift through political rhetoric to maintain life-saving procedures such as social distancing and other infection dampening efforts. Additionally, recent civil unrest due to the disproportionate killings of Black men by police provokes investigation into the public's mathematical literacy. In this paper, we investigate adolescent students' critical mathematics consciousness and mathematics literacy as they reason through two interview tasks on the coronavirus and police shooting data. Drawing on Frankenstein's program of Critical Mathematics Education, we introduce an analytic framework for documenting the critical mathematics consciousness of adolescent students. We interviewed fifteen 14- to 16-year-old students as they solved five tasks designed to elicit their critical and ethical mathematical awareness. Our findings indicate that students exhibit very little critical mathematics consciousness in the context of the police problem but show awareness that data can be presented in ways that manipulate the public's emotions in the coronavirus problem. We conclude the paper with a discussion of implications for designing future instruction to support students' growth in critical mathematics consciousness.

Early Math Coursework and College Readiness: Evidence from Targeted Middle School Math Acceleration

Abstract:To better prepare students for college-level math and the demands of the labor market, school systems have tried to increase the rigor of students’ math coursework. The failure of universal “Algebra for All” models has led recently to more targeted approaches. We study one such approach in Wake County, North Carolina, which began using prior test scores to assign middle school students to an accelerated math track culminating in eighth grade algebra. The policy has reduced the role that income and race played in course assignment. A regression discontinuity design exploiting the eligibility threshold shows that acceleration has no clear effect on test scores but lowers middle school course grades. Acceleration does, however, raise the probability of taking and passing geometry in ninth grade by over 30 percentage points, including for black and Hispanic students. Nonetheless, most students accelerated in middle school do not remain so by high school and those that do earn low grades in advanced courses. This leaky pipeline suggests that targeted math acceleration has potential to increase college readiness among disadvantaged populations but that acceleration alone is insufficient to keep most students on such a track.

Abstract:Despite longstanding efforts in the K-12 STEM education community to create meaningful mathematical experiences across disciplines, mathematics continues to be a siloed subject which is tracked based on ability. With an increasing number of high-achieving students enrolling in Algebra I in Grade 7 or earlier, there is a need for research on the readiness of accelerated STEM-intending students to persist in mathematics at the college level. A mathematical mindset framework was employed to explore the relationships between level of Algebra I acceleration, student (n = 2111) and instructor (n = 141) beliefs about sense-making and mistake-making, and attitudes in first-semester college calculus. Findings from a series of multilevel analyses indicate that interactions between student mathematical mindset and perceived progressive teaching practices influence attitudes toward mathematics. While student-centered instruction had a slightly negative effect on attitude, there was a differential effect in relation to student beliefs about sense-making as a metric of success in mathematics. These findings contribute to empirical understandings of mathematical mindset and the complex transition from high school calculus to college calculus. Implications for interdisciplinary STEM education and persistence in STEM undergraduate study are discussed.

Abstract:In this volume, we encouraged a broad array of submissions that highlight issues of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in introductory mathematics programs with special attention to precalculus, differential calculus, and integral calculus and surrounding departmental programs to support students in these courses. The volume features illustrative case studies that showcase ways in which departments and instructors are attending to promoting diverse introductory mathematics programs, achieving, or monitoring equitable student outcomes and experiences, and promoting inclusive teaching practices. Achieving and promoting DEI issues in introductory mathematics programs is not an easy undertaking so we encouraged submissions of models in progress, discussions of potential obstacles, challenges, and what departments and instructors have done to overcome barriers to address these issues. The volume also features thematic chapters that create a vision for DEI based on the illustrative case studies and known literature.

Abstract:This article investigates the implementation of inquiry-oriented instruction in 20 undergraduate mathematics classrooms. In contrast to conventional wisdom that active learning is good for all students, we found gendered performance differences between women and men in the inquiry classes that were not present in a noninquiry comparison sample. Through a secondary analysis of classroom videos, we linked these performance inequities to differences in women’s participation rates across classes. Thus, we provide empirical evidence that simply implementing active learning is insufficient, and that the nature of inquiry-oriented classrooms is highly consequential for improving gender equity in mathematics.
