Abstract:Matching logic is a logical framework for specifying and reasoning about programs using pattern matching semantics. A pattern is made up of a number of structural components and constraints. Structural components are syntactically matched, while constraints need to be satisfied. Having multiple structural patterns poses a practical problem as it requires multiple matching operations. This is easily remedied by unification, for which an algorithm has already been defined and proven correct in a sorted, polyadic variant of matching logic. This paper revisits the subject in the applicative variant of the language while generalising the unification problem and mechanizing a proven-sound solution in Coq.

Abstract:From the interpretation of Linear Logic multiplicative disjunction as the $\varepsilon$-product defined by Laurent Schwartz, we construct several models of Differential Linear Logic based on usual mathematical notions of smooth maps. This improves on previous results, by R. Blute, T. Ehrhard and C. Tasson, based on convenient smoothness where only intuitionist models were built. We isolate a completeness condition, called k-quasi-completeness, and an associated notion stable by duality called k-reflexivity, allowing for a $*$-autonomous category of k-reflexive spaces in which the dual of the tensor product is the reflexive version of the $\varepsilon$ product. We adapt Meise's definition of Smooth maps into a first model of Differential Linear Logic, made of k-reflexive spaces. We also build two new models of Linear Logic with conveniently smooth maps, on categories made respectively of Mackey-complete Schwartz spaces and Mackey-complete Nuclear Spaces (with extra reflexivity conditions). Varying slightly the notion of smoothness, one also recovers models of DiLL on the same $*$-autonomous categories. Throughout the article, we work within the setting of Dialogue categories where the tensor product is exactly the $\varepsilon$-product (without reflexivization).

Abstract:This paper extends prior work on the connections between logics from finite model theory and propositional/algebraic proof systems. We show that if all non-isomorphic graphs in a given graph class can be distinguished in the logic Choiceless Polynomial Time with counting (CPT), then they can also be distinguished in the bounded-degree extended polynomial calculus (EPC), and the refutations have roughly the same size as the resource consumption of the CPT-sentence. This allows to transfer lower bounds for EPC to CPT and thus constitutes a new potential approach towards better understanding the limits of CPT. A super-polynomial EPC lower bound for a PTIME-instance of the graph isomorphism problem would separate CPT from PTIME and thus solve a major open question in finite model theory. Further, using our result, we provide a model theoretic proof for the separation of bounded-degree polynomial calculus and bounded-degree extended polynomial calculus.

Finite models for positive combinatorial and exponential algebra

Abstract:We use high girth, high chromatic number hypergraphs to show that there are finite models of the equational theory of the semiring of nonnegative integers whose equational theory has no finite axiomatisation, and show this also holds if factorial, fixed base exponentiation and operations for binomial coefficients are adjoined. We also derive the decidability of the equational logical entailment operator $\vdash$ for antecedents true on $\mathbb{N}$ by way of a form of the finite model property. Two appendices contain additional basic development of combinatorial operations. Amongst the observations are an eventual dominance well-ordering of combinatorial functions and consequent representation of the ordinal $\epsilon_0$ in terms of factorial functions; the equivalence of the equational logic of combinatorial algebra over the natural numbers and over the positive reals; and a candidate list of elementary axioms.

Constructing Fully Complete Models of Multiplicative Linear Logic

Abstract:The multiplicative fragment of Linear Logic is the formal system in this family with the best understood proof theory, and the categorical models which best capture this theory are the fully complete ones. We demonstrate how the Hyland-Tan double glueing construction produces such categories, either with or without units, when applied to any of a large family of degenerate models. This process explains as special cases a number of such models from the literature. In order to achieve this result, we develop a tensor calculus for compact closed categories with finite biproducts. We show how the combinatorial properties required for a fully complete model are obtained by this glueing construction adding to the structure already available from the original category.

Abstract:We introduce a bicategorical model of linear logic which is a novel variation of the bicategory of groupoids, profunctors, and natural transformations. Our model is obtained by endowing groupoids with additional structure, called a kit, to stabilize the profunctors by controlling the freeness of the groupoid action on profunctor elements. The theory of generalized species of structures, based on profunctors, is refined to a new theory of \emph{stable species} of structures between groupoids with Boolean kits. Generalized species are in correspondence with analytic functors between presheaf categories; in our refined model, stable species are shown to be in correspondence with restrictions of analytic functors, which we characterize as being stable, to full subcategories of stabilized presheaves. Our motivating example is the class of finitary polynomial functors between categories of indexed sets, also known as normal functors, that arises from kits enforcing free actions. We show that the bicategory of groupoids with Boolean kits, stable species, and natural transformations is cartesian closed. This makes essential use of the logical structure of Boolean kits and explains the well-known failure of cartesian closure for the bicategory of finitary polynomial functors between categories of set-indexed families and cartesian natural transformations. The paper additionally develops the model of classical linear logic underlying the cartesian closed structure and clarifies the connection to stable domain theory.

Polynomial Universes and Dependent Types

Abstract:Awodey, later with Newstead, showed how polynomial pseudomonads $(u,1,\Sigma)$ with extra structure (termed "natural models" by Awodey) hold within them the categorical semantics for dependent type theory. Their work presented these ideas clearly but ultimately led them outside of the category of polynomial functors in order to explain all of the structure possessed by such models of type theory. This paper builds off that work -- explicating the categorical semantics of dependent type theory by axiomatizing them \emph{entirely} in the language of polynomial functors. In order to handle the higher-categorical coherences required for such an explanation, we work with polynomial functors internally in the language of Homotopy Type Theory, which allows for higher-dimensional structures such as pseudomonads, etc. to be expressed purely in terms of the structure of a suitably-chosen $\infty$-category of polynomial functors. The move from set theory to Homotopy Type Theory thus has a twofold effect of enabling a simpler exposition of natural models, which is at the same time amenable to formalization in a proof assistant, such as Agda. Moreover, the choice to remain firmly within the setting of polynomial functors reveals many additional structures of natural models that were otherwise left implicit or not considered by Awodey \& Newstead. Chief among these, we highlight the fact that every polynomial pseudomonad $(u,1,\Sigma)$ as above that is also equipped with structure to interpret dependent product types gives rise to a self-distributive law $u \triangleleft u\to u \triangleleft u$, which witnesses the usual distributive law of dependent products over dependent sums.

Polynomial functors on some categories of elements

Abstract:We study the category $\mathcal{F}(\mathfrak{S}_S,\mathcal{V})$ of functors from the category $\mathfrak{S}_S$, which is the category of elements of some presheaf $S$ on the category $\mathcal{V}^f$ of finite dimensional vector spaces, to $\mathcal{V}$ the category of vector spaces of any dimension on some field $\mathbb{k}$. In the case where $S$ satisfies some noetherianity condition, we have a convenient description of the category $\mathfrak{S}_S$. In this case, we can define a notion of polynomial functors on $\mathfrak{S}_S$. And, like in the usual setting of functors from the category of finite dimensional vector spaces to the one of vector spaces of any dimension, we can describe the quotient $\mathcal{P}\mathrm{ol}_{n}(\mathfrak{S}_S,\mathcal{V})/\mathcal{P}\mathrm{ol}_{n-1}(\mathfrak{S}_S,\mathcal{V})$, where $\mathcal{P}\mathrm{ol}_{n}(\mathfrak{S}_S,\mathcal{V})$ denote the full subcategory of $\mathcal{F}(\mathfrak{S}_S,\mathcal{V})$ of polynomial functors of degree less than or equal to $n$. Finally, if $\mathbb{k}=\mathbb{F}_p$ for some prime $p$ and if $S$ satisfies the required noetherianity condition, we can compute the set of isomorphism classes of simple objects in $\mathcal{F}(\mathfrak{S}_S,\mathcal{V})$.

Optimal matching for sharing and linearity analysis

Abstract:Static analysis of logic programs by abstract interpretation requires designing abstract operators which mimic the concrete ones, such as unification, renaming and projection. In the case of goal-driven analysis, where goal-dependent semantics are used, we also need a backward-unification operator, typically implemented through matching. In this paper we study the problem of deriving optimal abstract matching operators for sharing and linearity properties. We provide an optimal operator for matching in the domain ${\mathtt{ShLin}^{\omega}}$, which can be easily instantiated to derive optimal operators for the domains ${\mathtt{ShLin}^{2}}$ by Andy King and the reduced product $\mathtt{Sharing} \times \mathtt{Lin}$.

Abstract:This paper presents a many-sorted polyadic modal logic that generalizes some of the existing approaches. The algebraic semantics has led us to a many-sorted generalization of boolean algebras with operators, for which we prove the analogue of the Jónsson-Tarski theorem. While the transition from the mono-sorted logic to many-sorted one is a smooth process, we see our system as a step towards deepening the connection between modal logic and program verification, since our system can be seen as the propositional fragment of Matching logic, a first-order logic for specifying and reasoning about programs.

Model Theory of Complex Numbers with Polynomial Functions

Abstract:Let $\mathbb C$ be the set of complex numbers, and let $\mathcal P$ be a collection of complex polynomial maps in several variables. Assuming at least one $P\in\mathcal P$ depends on at least two variables, we classify all possibilities for the structure $(\mathscr M;\mathcal P)$ up to definable equivalence. In particular, outside a short list of exceptions, we show that $(\mathscr M;\mathcal P)$ always defines $+$ and $\times$. Our tools include Zilber's Restricted Trichotomy, as well as the classification of symmetric non-expanding pairs of polynomials over $\mathbb C$ from arithmetic combinatorics. Along the way, we also give a new condition for a reduct $\mathscr M=(M,...)$ of a smooth curve over an algebraically closed field to recover all constructible subsets of powers of $M$.

Model-checking positive equality free logic on a fixed structure (direttissima)

Abstract:We give a new, direct proof of the tetrachotomy classification for the model-checking problem of positive equality-free logic parameterised by the model. The four complexity classes are Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete. The previous proof of this result relied on notions from universal algebra and core-like structures called U-X-cores. This new proof uses only relations, and works for infinite structures also in the distinction between Logspace and NP-hard under Turing reductions. For finite domains, the membership in NP and co-NP follows from a simple argument, which breaks down already over an infinite set with a binary relation. We develop some interesting new algorithms to solve NP and co-NP membership for a variety of infinite structures. We begin with those first-order definable in (Q;=), the so-called equality languages, then move to those first-order definable in (Q;<), the so-called temporal languages. However, it is first-order expansions of the Random Graph (V,E) that provide the most interesting examples. In all of these cases, the derived classification is a tetrachotomy between Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete.

Abstract:This paper establishes a bridge between linear logic and mainstream graph theory, building on previous work by Retor\'e (2003). We show that the problem of correctness for MLL+Mix proof nets is equivalent to the problem of uniqueness of a perfect matching. By applying matching theory, we obtain new results for MLL+Mix proof nets: a linear-time correctness criterion, a quasi-linear sequentialization algorithm, and a characterization of the sub-polynomial complexity of the correctness problem. We also use graph algorithms to compute the dependency relation of Bagnol et al. (2015) and the kingdom ordering of Bellin (1997), and relate them to the notion of blossom which is central to combinatorial maximum matching algorithms. In this journal version, we have added an explanation of Retor\'e's "RB-graphs" in terms of a general construction on graphs with forbidden transitions. In fact, it is by analyzing RB-graphs that we arrived at this construction, and thus obtained a polynomial-time algorithm for finding trails avoiding forbidden transitions; the latter is among the material covered in another paper by the author focusing on graph theory (arXiv:1901.07028).

Abstract:This paper introduces a model theory for resolution on Higher Order Hereditarily Harrop formulae (HOHH), the logic underlying the Lambda-Prolog programming language, and proves soundness and completeness of resolution. The semantics and the proof of completeness of the formal system is shown in several ways, suitably adapted to deal with the impredicativity of higher-order logic, which rules out definitions of truth based on induction on formula structure. First, we use the least fixed point of a certain operator on interpretations, in the style of Apt and Van Emden, Then a constructive completeness theorem is given using a proof theoretic variant of the Lindenbaum algebra, which also contains a new approach to establishing cut-elimination.

From Thin Concurrent Games to Generalized Species of Structures (Extended Version)

Abstract:Two families of denotational models have emerged from the semantic analysis of linear logic: dynamic models, typically presented as game semantics, and static models, typically based on a category of relations. In this paper we introduce a formal bridge between a dynamic model and a static model: the model of thin concurrent games and strategies, based on event structures, and the model of generalized species of structures, based on distributors. A special focus of this paper is the two-dimensional nature of the dynamic-static relationship, which we formalize with double categories and bicategories. In the first part of the paper, we construct a symmetric monoidal oplax functor from linear concurrent strategies to distributors. We highlight two fundamental differences between the two models: the composition mechanism, and the representation of resource symmetries. In the second part of the paper, we adapt established methods from game semantics (visible strategies, payoff structure) to enforce a tighter connection between the two models. We obtain a cartesian closed pseudofunctor, which we exploit to shed new light on recent results in the theory of the lambda-calculus.

Abstract:This paper is a study of first-order coherent logic from the point of view of duality and categorical logic. We prove a duality theorem between coherent hyperdoctrines and open polyadic Priestley spaces, which we subsequently apply to prove completeness, omitting types, and Craig interpolation theorems for coherent or intuitionistic logic. Our approach emphasizes the role of interpolation and openness properties, and allows for a modular, syntax-free treatment of these model-theoretic results. As further applications of the same method, we prove completeness theorems for constant domain and Gödel-Dummett intuitionistic predicate logics.

Abstract:The usage of elementary submodels is a simple but powerful method to prove theorems, or to simplify proofs in infinite combinatorics. First we introduce all the necessary concepts of logic, then we prove classical theorems using elementary submodels. We also present a new proof of Nash-Williams's theorem on cycle-decomposition of graphs, and finally we improve a decomposition theorem of Laviolette concerning bond-faithful decompositions of graphs.

Extending and Implementing the Stable Model Semantics

Abstract:An algorithm for computing the stable model semantics of logic programs is developed. It is shown that one can extend the semantics and the algorithm to handle new and more expressive types of rules. Emphasis is placed on the use of efficient implementation techniques. In particular, an implementation of lookahead that safely avoids testing every literal for failure and that makes the use of lookahead feasible is presented. In addition, a good heuristic is derived from the principle that the search space should be minimized. Due to the lack of competitive algorithms and implementations for the computation of stable models, the system is compared with three satisfiability solvers. This shows that the heuristic can be improved by breaking ties, but leaves open the question of how to break them. It also demonstrates that the more expressive rules of the stable model semantics make the semantics clearly preferable over propositional logic when a problem has a more compact logic program representation. Conjunctive normal form representations are never more compact than logic program ones.
