Abstract:It was generally assumed that the Stokes parameters are complete characterization for the state of polarization of a plane light wave so that their counterparts in quantum optics, called the Stokes operators, represent the polarization of photons. Here we show, through analyzing the properties of polarized plane waves in an optically active medium, that the Stokes parameters are not able to completely characterize the state of polarization of a plane wave. The key point is that only when a plane wave is expanded in terms of the orthogonal base modes, which are physically meaningful, can the two expansion coefficients make up the Jones vector. Taking this into consideration, we demonstrate that the Stokes parameters of any elliptically polarized wave in an isotropic chiral medium, determined solely by its Jones vector, are transmitted unchanged. They are not able to reflect the rotation of its polarization ellipse along with the propagation. The relationship of the Stokes parameters with the polarization of light needs further investigation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is whether the complete description of the polarization state of light waves can be fully characterized by Stokes parameters. Specifically, by analyzing the optical activity properties of plane light waves in isotropic chiral media, the author points out that the Stokes parameters cannot fully describe the polarization state of plane light waves. The key point of the paper is that only when the plane wave is expanded according to the orthogonal basis mode, can the two expansion coefficients form the Jones vector. Based on this, the author proves that in isotropic chiral media, the Stokes parameters of any elliptically polarized wave are determined only by its Jones vector and do not change with propagation, and thus cannot reflect the rotation of the polarization ellipse. This indicates that the relationship between the Stokes parameters and the polarization of light needs further study. ### Main findings: 1. **Limitations of Stokes parameters**: The Stokes parameters cannot fully characterize the polarization state of plane light waves, especially in isotropic chiral media. 2. **Rotation of the polarization ellipse**: In chiral media, the polarization ellipse of an elliptically polarized wave rotates with the propagation distance, but this rotation cannot be reflected by the Stokes parameters. 3. **Relationship between Jones vector and polarization vector**: In chiral media, the polarization vector of a plane wave can no longer be simply equated to its Jones vector because the polarization basis vector rotates with propagation. ### Conclusion: Through the analysis of optical activity in chiral media, the paper reveals the deficiencies of Stokes parameters in describing the polarization state of light waves. To fully characterize the rotation of the polarization state, an additional degree of freedom, that is, the rotation angle of the polarization basis vector, needs to be introduced. This finding raises new questions about understanding the essence of Stokes parameters and suggests the problem of reference frame selection that needs to be noted in experimental measurements.
