Abstract:The higher order matching problem is the problem of determining whether a term is an instance of another in the simply typed $\lambda$-calculus, i.e. to solve the equation a = b where a and b are simply typed $\lambda$-terms and b is ground. The decidability of this problem is still open. We prove the decidability of the particular case in which the variables occurring in the problem are at most third order.

However, second-order matching in general is nondeterministic, and the matching algorithm is so expensive that the matching is NP-complete. It is orthodox to impose constraints on the form of higher-order patterns so as to obtain the desirable matches satisfying certain properties such as decidability and finiteness. In the context of unification, Miller's higher-order patterns have a single most-general unifier. In this paper, we relax the restriction of his patterns without changing determinism in the context of matching instead of unification. As a consequence, our deterministic second-order patterns cover a wide class of useful patterns for program transformation. The time-complexity of our deterministic matching algorithm is linear in the size of a term for a fixed pattern.

Our deterministic matching algorithm is as fast as the first-order matching algorithm, almost in proportion to the size of the term.

Abstract:Sound exhaustiveness checking of pattern-matching is an essential feature of functional programming languages, and OCaml supports it for GADTs. However this check is incomplete, in that it may fail to detect that a pattern can match no concrete value. In this paper we show that this problem is actually undecidable, but that we can strengthen the exhaustiveness and redundancy checks so that they cover more practical cases. The new algorithm relies on a clever modification of type inference for patterns.

Abstract:We introduce a class of deterministic higher-order patterns to Template Haskell for supporting declarative transformational pro- gramming with more elegant binding of pattern variables. Higher-order patterns are capable of checking and binding subtrees far from the root, which is useful for program manipulation. However, there are three ma- jor problems. First, it is dicult to explain why a particular desired matching result cannot be obtained because of the complicated higher- order matching algorithm. Second, the general higher-order matching al- gorithm is of high cost, which may be exponential time at worst. Third, the (possibly infinite) nondeterministic solutions of higher-order match- ing prevents it from being used in a functional setting. To resolve these problems, we impose reasonable restrictions on higher-order patterns to gain predictability, eciency and determinism. We show that our deter- ministic higher-order patterns are powerful to support concise specifica- tion and ecient implementation of various kinds of program transfor- mations for optimizations.
Extending the Quantitative Pattern-Matching Paradigm

Abstract:We show how (well-established) type systems based on non-idempotent intersection types can be extended to characterize termination properties of functional programming languages with pattern matching features. To model such programming languages, we use a (weak and closed) $\lambda$-calculus integrating a pattern matching mechanism on algebraic data types (ADTs). Remarkably, we also show that this language not only encodes Plotkin's CBV and CBN $\lambda$-calculus as well as other subsuming frameworks, such as the bang-calculus, but can also be used to interpret the semantics of effectful languages with exceptions. After a thorough study of the untyped language, we introduce a type system based on intersection types, and we show through purely logical methods that the set of terminating terms of the language corresponds exactly to that of well-typed terms. Moreover, by considering non-idempotent intersection types, this characterization turns out to be quantitative, i.e. the size of the type derivation of a term t gives an upper bound for the number of evaluation steps from t to its normal form.

Abstract:We study polymorphic type assignment systems for untyped lambda-calculi with effects, based on Moggi's monadic approach. Moving from the abstract definition of monads, we introduce a version of the call-by-value computational lambda-calculus based on Wadler's variant with unit and bind combinators, and without let. We define a notion of reduction for the calculus and prove it confluent, and also we relate our calculus to the original work by Moggi showing that his untyped metalanguage can be interpreted and simulated in our calculus. We then introduce an intersection type system inspired to Barendregt, Coppo and Dezani system for ordinary untyped lambda-calculus, establishing type invariance under conversion, and provide models of the calculus via inverse limit and filter model constructions and relate them. We prove soundness and completeness of the type system, together with subject reduction and expansion properties. Finally, we introduce a notion of convergence, which is precisely related to reduction, and characterize convergent terms via their types.

Abstract:Matching logic is a logical framework for specifying and reasoning about programs using pattern matching semantics. A pattern is made up of a number of structural components and constraints. Structural components are syntactically matched, while constraints need to be satisfied. Having multiple structural patterns poses a practical problem as it requires multiple matching operations. This is easily remedied by unification, for which an algorithm has already been defined and proven correct in a sorted, polyadic variant of matching logic. This paper revisits the subject in the applicative variant of the language while generalising the unification problem and mechanizing a proven-sound solution in Coq.

Abstract:The lambda calculus with constructors is an extension of the lambda calculus with variadic constructors. It decomposes the pattern-matching a la ML into a case analysis on constants and a commutation rule between case and application constructs. Although this commutation rule does not match with the usual computing intuitions, it makes the calculus expressive and confluent, with a rather simple syntax. In this paper we define a sound notion of categorical model for the lambda calculus with constructors. We then prove that this definition is complete for the fragment of the calculus with no match-failure, using the model of partial equivalence relations.

Abstract:We present the Delta-calculus, an explicitly typed lambda-calculus with strong pairs, projections and explicit type coercions. The calculus can be parametrized with different intersection type theories T, e.g. the Coppo-Dezani, the Coppo-Dezani-Salle', the Coppo-Dezani-Venneri and the Barendregt-Coppo-Dezani ones, producing a family of Delta-calculi with related intersection type systems. We prove the main properties like Church-Rosser, unicity of type, subject reduction, strong normalization, decidability of type checking and type reconstruction. We state the relationship between the intersection type assignment systems a` la Curry and the corresponding intersection type systems a` la Church by means of an essence function translating an explicitly typed Delta-term into a pure lambda-term one. We finally translate a Delta-term with type coercions into an equivalent one without them; the translation is proved to be coherent because its essence is the identity. The generic Delta-calculus can be parametrized to take into account other intersection type theories as the ones in the Barendregt et al. book.

Typed Non-determinism in Functional and Concurrent Calculi

Abstract:We study functional and concurrent calculi with non-determinism, along with type systems to control resources based on linearity. The interplay between non-determinism and linearity is delicate: careless handling of branches can discard resources meant to be used exactly once. Here we go beyond prior work by considering non-determinism in its standard sense: once a branch is selected, the rest are discarded. Our technical contributions are three-fold. First, we introduce a $\pi$-calculus with non-deterministic choice, governed by session types. Second, we introduce a resource $\lambda$-calculus, governed by intersection types, in which non-determinism concerns fetching of resources from bags. Finally, we connect our two typed non-deterministic calculi via a correct translation.

The Equivalence Problem of E-Pattern Languages with Length Constraints is Undecidable

Abstract:Patterns are words with terminals and variables. The language of a pattern is the set of words obtained by uniformly substituting all variables with words that contain only terminals. Length constraints restrict valid substitutions of variables by associating the variables of a pattern with a system (or disjunction of systems) of linear diophantine inequalities. Pattern languages with length constraints contain only words in which all variables are substituted to words with lengths that fulfill such a given set of length constraints. We consider membership, inclusion, and equivalence problems for erasing and non-erasing pattern languages with length constraints. Our main result shows that the erasing equivalence problem, one of the most prominent open problems in the realm of patterns-becomes undecidable if length constraints are allowed in addition to variable equality. Additionally, it is shown that the terminal-free inclusion problem-another prominent open problem in the realm of patterns-is also undecidable in this setting. It is also shown that considering regular constraints, i.e., associating variables also with regular languages as additional restrictions together with length constraints for valid substitutions, results in undecidability of the non-erasing equivalence problem. This sets a first upper bound on constraints to obtain undecidability in this case, as this problem is trivially decidable in the case of no constraints and as it has unknown decidability if only regular- or only length-constraints are considered.

Abstract:Over twenty years ago, Abadi et al. established the Dependency Core Calculus (DCC) as a general purpose framework for analyzing dependency in typed programming languages. Since then, dependency analysis has shown many practical benefits to language design: its results can help users and compilers enforce security constraints, eliminate dead code, among other applications. In this work, we present a Dependent Dependency Calculus (DDC), which extends this general idea to the setting of a dependently-typed language. We use this calculus to track both run-time and compile-time irrelevance, enabling faster type-checking and program execution.

Abstract:We show that restricting the elimination principle of the natural numbers type in Martin-Löf Type Theory (MLTT) to a universe of types not containing $\Pi$-types ensures that all definable functions are primitive recursive. This extends the concept of primitive recursiveness to general types. We discuss extensions to univalent type theories and other notions of computability. We are inspired by earlier work by Martin Hofmann, work on Joyal's arithmetic universes, and Hugo Herbelin and Ludovic Patey's sketched Calculus of Primitive Recursive Constructions.

Abstract:In this paper we describe how to leverage higher-order unification to type check a dependently typed language with meta-variables. The literature usually presents the unification algorithm as a standalone component, however the need to check definitional equality of terms while type checking gives rise to a tight interplay between type checking and unification. This interplay is a major source of complexity in the type-checking algorithm for existing dependently typed programming languages. We propose an algorithm that encodes a type-checking problem entirely in the form of unification constraints, reducing the complexity of the type-checking code by taking advantage of higher order unification, which is already part of the implementation of many dependently typed languages.

Abstract:We study a type checking algorithm that is able to type check a nontrivial subclass of functional programs that use features such as higher-rank, impredicative and second-order types. The only place the algorithm requires type annotation is before each function declaration. We prove the soundness of the type checking algorithm with respect to System $\mathbf{F}_{\omega}$, i.e. if the program is type checked, then the type checker will produce a well-typed annotated System $\mathbf{F}_{\omega}$ term. We extend the basic algorithm to handle pattern matching and let-bindings. We implement a prototype type checker and test it on a variety of functional programs.

Abstract:It is well-known in the field of programming languages that dealing with variable names and binders may lead to conflicts such as undesired captures when implementing interpreters or compilers. This situation has been overcome by resorting to de Bruijn indices for calculi where binders capture only one variable name, like the $\lambda$-calculus. The advantage of this approach relies on the fact that so-called $\alpha$-equivalence becomes syntactical equality when working with indices. In recent years pattern calculi have gained considerable attention given their expressiveness. They turn out to be notoriously convenient to study the foundations of modern functional programming languages modeling features like pattern matching, path polymorphism, pattern polymorphism, etc. However, the literature falls short when it comes to dealing with $\alpha$-conversion and binders capturing simultaneously several variable names. Such is the case of the Pure Pattern Calculus (PPC): a natural extension of $\lambda$-calculus that allows to abstract virtually any term. This paper extends de Bruijn's ideas to properly overcome the multi-binding problem by introducing a novel presentation of PPC with bidimensional indices, in an effort to implement a prototype for a typed functional programming language based on PPC that captures path polymorphism.
