Abstract:Employing a Mathematica symbolic computer algebra package called xTensor, we present -covariant special case proofs of the shear-free perfect fluid conjecture in general relativity. We first present the case where the pressure is constant, and where the acceleration is parallel to the vorticity vector. These cases were first presented in their covariant form by Senovilla et al. We then provide a covariant proof for the case where the acceleration and vorticity vectors are orthogonal, which leads to the existence of a Killing vector along the vorticity. This Killing vector satisfies the new constraint equations resulting from the vanishing of the shear. Furthermore, it is shown that in order for the conjecture to be true, this Killing vector must have a vanishing spatially projected directional covariant derivative along the velocity vector field. This in turn implies the existence of another basic vector field along the direction of the vorticity for the conjecture to hold. Finally, we show that in general, there exists a basic vector field parallel to the acceleration for which the conjecture is true.

Abstract:Using a formalism that was recently developed in a companion Letter, we rigorously prove the equivalence, in the linear regime, of a number of apparently different relativistic hydrodynamic theories proposed in the literature. In particular, we show that Hydro+ is indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory for bulk viscosity, which in turn is indistinguishable from a reacting mixture. The two-fluid model for superfluidity coincides with the Israel-Stewart theory for heat conduction in the limit of infinite conductivity, and this explains why the latter has a second sound. Also, MIS* is equivalent to the Burgers model for viscoelasticity, and this implies that the former must exhibit an elastic behavior at high frequencies. Additionally, we show that if the degrees of freedom and the conservation laws of a hydrodynamic theory have the same geometric character as those of the Israel-Stewart theory, then such theory must be indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory in the linear regime. This explains why all second-order theories turn out to be identical near equilibrium. Abstract:Recently it was shown that if the matter congruence of a general relativistic perfect fluid flow in an almost FLRW universe is shear-free, then it must be either expansion or rotation-free. Here we generalize this result for a general f(R) theory of gravity and show there exist scenarios where this result can be avoided. This suggests that there are situations where linearized forth-order gravity shares properties with Newtonian theory not valid in General Relativity.

Abstract:In the framework of general relativity, the dynamics of a general barotropic fluid are coupled to the Einstein equations, which govern the structure of the underlying spacetime. We establish a priori estimates and well-posedness in Sobolev spaces for this model with a free boundary. Within the frame parallel-transported by the fluid velocity, we decompose the fluid and geometric quantities. The fluid components are estimated via a coupled interior-boundary wave equation, while the geometric quantities are analyzed through the Bianchi equations. Compared to a previous work, the results in present paper allow general equations of state and non-zero vorticities.

Abstract:Two formulations of superfluidity are reviewed: Landau's phenomenological two-fluid model and a relativistic effective field theory description. We demonstrate how the two-fluid formalism can be recovered from the nonrelativistic limit of the relativistic effective theory at finite temperatures. We show how self-gravitating, nonrelativistic superfluids are obtained from the Newtonian limit of the relativistic approach on curved spaces. The concepts are presented in an accessible manner for readers who may not be deeply familiar with superfluidity from a condensed matter perspective.

Abstract:This is an important and natural question as the spacetime shear, inhomogeneity and tidal effects are all intertwined via the Einstein field equations. However, as we show in this paper, such scenarios are possible for limited classes of equations of state that are solutions to a highly non-linear and fourth order differential equation. To show this, we use a covariant semitetrad spacetime decomposition and present a novel geometrical classification of shear-free Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS-II) perfect fluid self-gravitating systems, in terms of the covariantly defined fluid acceleration and the fluid expansion. Noteworthily, we deduce the governing differential equation that gives the possible limited equations of state of matter.

Abstract:The approach of extended irreversible thermodynamics consists of promoting the dissipative fluxes to non-equilibrium thermodynamic variables. In a relativistic context, this naturally leads to the formulation of the theory of Israel and Stewart (1979), which is, to date, one of the most successful theories for relativistic dissipation. Although the generality of the principle makes it applicable to any dissipative fluid, a connection of the Israel-Stewart theory with microphysics has been established, through kinetic theory, only for the case of ideal quantum gases. By performing a convenient change of variables, we provide, for the case of bulk viscosity, an equivalent reformulation of the equations at the basis of extended irreversible thermodynamics. This approach maps any thermodynamic process which contributes to the bulk viscosity into a set of chemical reactions, whose reaction coordinates are abstract parameters describing the displacement from local thermodynamic equilibrium of the fluid element. We apply our new formalism to the case of the relativistic fluids, showing that the Israel-Stewart model for bulk viscosity is just the second-order expansion of a minimal model belonging to a larger class of non-perturbative theories for bulk viscosity which include the nuclear-reaction-mediated bulk viscosity of neutron star matter as a particular case. Furthermore, we show with concrete examples that our formalism provides new ways of computing the bulk viscosity directly and defines a simple prescription for constructing the Israel-Stewart model for a generic bulk-viscous fluid.

Abstract:This is a paper compiled by students of the 2008 Summer School on Particles, Fields, and Strings held at the University of British Columbia on lectures given by Veronika Hubeny as understood and interpreted by the authors. We start with an introduction to the AdS/CFT duality. More specifically, we discuss the correspondence between relativistic, conformal hydrodynamics and Einstein's theory of gravity. Within our framework the Einstein equations are an effective description for the string theory in the bulk of AdS_5 spacetime and the hydrodynamic fluid equations represent the conformal field theory near thermal equilibrium on the boundary. In particular we present a new technique for calculating properties in fluid dynamics using the stress-energy tensor induced on the boundary, by the gravitational field in the bulk, and comparing it with the form of the stress-energy tensor from hydrodynamics. A detailed treatment can be found in [JHEP 02 (2008) 045] and [arXiv:0803.2526].
Hydrodynamics and instabilities of relativistic superfluids at finite superflow

Abstract:We study the linear response of relativistic superfluids with a non-zero superfluid velocity. For sufficiently large superflow, an instability develops via the crossing of a pole of the retarded Green's functions to the upper half complex frequency plane. We show that this is caused by a local thermodynamic instability, i.e. when an eigenvalue of the static susceptibility matrix (the second derivatives of the free energy) diverges and changes sign. The onset of the instability occurs when $\partial_{\zeta}(n_s\zeta)=0$, with $\zeta$ the norm of the superfluid velocity and $n_s$ the superfluid density. The Landau instability for non-relativistic superfluids such as Helium 4 also coincides with the non-relativistic version of this criterion. We then turn to gauge/gravity duality and show that this thermodynamic instability criterion applies equally well to strongly-coupled superfluids. In passing, we compute holographically a number of transport coefficients parametrizing deviations out-of-equilibrium in the hydrodynamic regime and demonstrate that the gapless quasinormal modes of the dual planar black hole match those predicted by superfluid hydrodynamics.

Particles and their fluids in nontrivial matter extensions to general relativity

Abstract:According to the standard von Laue condition, the volume-averaged pressure inside particles of fixed mass and structure vanishes in the Minkowski limit of general relativity. Here we show that this condition is in general not fulfilled in the context of $f(R,T)$ gravity, or of other theories of gravity in which the linear momentum is not conserved in this limit (here, $R$ and $T$ represent the Ricci scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively). We derive a generalized von Laue condition valid for the $\mathcal R(R) + \mathcal F(T)$ subclass of $f(R,T)$ theories of gravity and discuss its cosmological implications. In particular, we show that the standard radiation and matter era evolution of the universe is recovered in the context $R + \mathcal F(T)$ gravity independently of the specific properties of the function $\mathcal F(T)$. We also find that dust -- a perfect fluid whose particles are at rest in the fluid's proper frame -- cannot in general be described as pressureless in the context of these theories. We further discuss the implications of our findings for the form of the on-shell Lagrangian of an ideal gas.

On Shearing Fluids with Homogeneous Densities

Abstract:In this paper, we study shearing spherically symmetric homogeneous density fluids in comoving coordinates. It is found that the expansion of the four-velocity of a perfect fluid is homogeneous, whereas its shear is generated by an arbitrary function of time M(t), related to the mass function of the distribution. This function is found to bear a functional relationship with density. The field equations are reduced to two coupled first order ordinary differential equations for the metric coefficients, g 11 and g 22. We have explored a class of solutions assuming that M is a linear function of the density. This class embodies, as a subcase, the complete class of shear-free solutions. We have discussed the off quoted work of Kustaanheimo (1947) and have noted that it deals with shear-free fluids having anisotropic pressure. It is shown that the anisotropy of the fluid is characterized by an arbitrary function of time. We have discussed some issues of historical priorities and credentials related to shear-free solutions. Recent controversial claims by Mitra (2011, 2012) have also been addressed. We found that the singularity and the shearing motion of the fluid are closely related. Abstract:We investigate the anisotropic evolution of spacetime driven by perfect fluid with off-diagonal shear-viscosity components. We consider the simplest form of the equation of state for fluid, for which the pressure and the shear stress are proportional to the energy density individually. At late times, compared with the usual Friedmann universe, we find that the spacetime expands less rapidly as the energy density drops faster due to the transfer to the shear stress. Very interestingly, for some ranges of the equation-of-state parameters, we find that the initial big-bang singularity can be removed.

Relativistic theory of the viscosity of fluids across the entire energy spectrum

Abstract:The shear viscosity is a fundamental transport property of matter. Here we derive a general theory of the viscosity of gases based on the relativistic Langevin equation (deduced from a relativistic Lagrangian) and nonaffine linear response theory. The proposed relativistic theory is able to recover the viscosity of non-relativistic classical gases, with all its key dependencies on mass, temperature, particle diameter and Boltzmann constant, in the limit of Lorentz factor $\gamma=1$. It also unveils the relativistic enhancement mechanism of viscosity. In the limit of ultrarelativistic fluids, the theory provides a new analytical formula which reproduces the cubic increase of viscosity with temperature in agreement with various estimates for hot dense matter and the QGP-type fluid.

Abstract:The Goldberg-Sachs theorem is an exact result on shear-free null geodesics in a vacuum spacetime. It is compared and contrasted with an exact result for pressure-free matter: shear-free flows cannot both expand and rotate. In both cases, the shear-free condition restricts the way distant matter can influence the local gravitational field. This leads to intriguing discontinuities in the relation of the General Relativity solutions to Newtonian solutions in the timelike case, and of the full theory to the linearised theory in the null case. It is a pleasure to dedicate this paper to Josh Goldberg.

Abstract:Integrability conditions arising from general irrotational fluid-flow considerations of a universe dominated by cosmic dark fluids will be investigated under special assumptions on the nature of the spacetime shear. Special emphasis will be placed on linearized perturbations of quasi-Newtonian and anti-Newtonian spacetimes, whereby the conditions for the existence and consistent evolution of such spacetimes in the presence of the Chaplygin gas fluid model will be derived and discussed.

Abstract:This paper is the second in a sequence of three devoted to the formulation of a theory of self-gravitating anisotropic fluids in both Newtonian gravity and general relativity. In the first paper we set the stage, placed our work in context, and provided an overview of the results obtained in this paper and the next. In this second paper we develop the Newtonian theory, inspired by a real-life example of an anisotropic fluid, the (nematic) liquid crystal. We apply the theory to the construction of static and spherical stellar models. In the third paper we port the theory to general relativity, and exploit it to build relativistic stellar models. In addition to the usual fluid variables (mass density, velocity field), the Newtonian theory features a director vector field , whose length provides a local measure of the size of the anisotropy, and whose direction gives the local direction of anisotropy. The theory is defined in terms of a Lagrangian which implicates all the relevant forms of energy: kinetic energy (with contributions from the velocity field and the time derivative of the director vector), internal energy (with isotropic and anisotropic contributions), gravitational interaction energy, and gravitational-field energy. This Lagrangian is easy to motivate, and it provides an excellent starting point for a relativistic generalization in the third paper. The equations of motion for the fluid, and Poisson's equation for the gravitational potential, follow from a variation of the action functional, given by the time integral of the Lagrangian. Because our stellar models feature a transition from an anisotropic phase at high density to an isotropic phase at low density, a substantial part of the paper is devoted to the development of a mechanics for the interface fluid, which mediates the phase transition.

Recent developments in mathematical aspects of relativistic fluids

Abstract:We review some recent developments in mathematical aspects of relativistic fluids. The goal is to provide a quick entry point to some research topics of current interest that is accessible to graduate students and researchers from adjacent fields, as well as to researches working on broader aspects of relativistic fluid dynamics interested in its mathematical formalism. Instead of complete proofs, which can be found in the published literature, here we focus on the proofs' main ideas and key concepts. After an introduction to the relativistic Euler equations, we cover the following topics: a new wave-transport formulation of the relativistic Euler equations tailored to applications; the problem of shock formation for relativistic Euler; rough (i.e., low-regularity) solutions to the relativistic Euler equations; the relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary; relativistic fluids with viscosity. We finish with a discussion of open problems and future directions of research.
