Abstract:Hierarchical (first-order) structured deformations are studied from the variational point of view. The main contributions of the present research are the first steps, at the theoretical level, to establish a variational framework to minimize mechanically relevant energies defined on hierarchical structured deformations. Two results are obtained here: (i) an approximation theorem and (ii) the assignment of an energy to a hierarchical structured deformation by means of an iterative procedure. This has the effect of validating the proposal made in [Deseri & Owen: Elasticity with hierarchical disarrangements: a field theory that admits slips and separations at multiple submacroscopic levels. J.~Elast., 135 (2019), 149--182] to study deformations admitting slips and separations at multiple submacroscopic levels. An explicit example is provided to illustrate the behavior of the proposed iterative procedure and relevant directions for future research are highlighted.

Abstract:Dynamic relaxation method (DRM) is a powerful method to solve problems such as form-finding and buckling analysis of flexible structures. In this paper, some aspects of the application of DRM in the analysis of flexible structures are discussed. In the first part, the application of DRM in form finding analysis of systems with one degree of freedom and systems with multiple degrees of freedom are described. The reason why only the geometrical stiffness of system is considered is explained. For cable-nets and tensile membrane structures the final shape is determined by the orientation of their internal force vector and the magnitude of the internal force vector only affects the base period of the system. So the convergence speed of DRM in form finding problem can be improved by augmenting the magnitude of internal force vector. Two examples, one is a two bar system and the other is a cable net, are analyzed and the numerical results prove this point well. The application of DRM in the buckling analysis is also discussed in the second part. Considering the main difference between FEM and DRM, a new local arc-length method based on DRM is proposed. Compared with the traditional arc-length method, the new one has good convergence and needs less computer memory for computing. The good convergence is also verified by two conventional numerical examples in the buckling analysis of spatial structures. The work here will benefit the further research of DRM.

Abstract:This study proposes a general framework for topology-finding or topology optimization of tensegrity structures. The existing topology-finding formulation of tensegrity structures based on mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) was improved and transformed into a formulation based on mixed-integer semidefinite programming (MISDP) which considers the global stability condition of tensegrity. We illustrated and analyzed two undesirable phenomena, loss of prestress stability and loss of integrity, caused by the missing global stability condition in previous MILP-based approaches. A branch-and-bound algorithm combined with a primal-dual interior-point algorithm is employed to solve the proposed MISDP model. Some numerical examples illustrated the improvements and effectiveness of the proposed approach. The proposed approach successfully can avoid the two undesirable phenomena and ensure the global stability of the found tensegrity structures. By using different stability conditions in the topology-finding process, the proposed approach can find general stable tensegrity structures and superstable tensegrity structures. We show that Coulombel-Goudon's results (2007) can hold in the weaker and more general Sobolev space of fractional order. The method of proof used is the Littlewood-Paley decomposition.

Abstract:In this paper we derive a new model for visco-elasticity with large deformations where the independent variables are the stretch and the rotation tensors which intervene with second gradients terms accounting for physical properties in the principle of virtual power. Another basic feature of our model is that there is conditional compatibility, entering the model as kinematic constraints and depending on the magnitude of an internal force associated to dislocations. Moreover, due to the kinematic constraints, the virtual velocities depend on the solutions of the problem. As a consequence, the variational formulation of the problem and the related mathematical analysis are neither standard nor straightforward. We adopt the strategy to invert the kinematic constraints through Green propagators, obtaining a system of integro-differential coupled equations. As a first mathematical step, we develop the analysis of the model in a simplified setting, i.e. considering the quasi-stationary version of the full system where we neglect inertia. In this context, we prove the existence of a global in time strong solution in three space dimensions for the system, employing techniques from PDEs and convex analysis, thus obtaining a novel breakthrough in the field of three-dimensional finite visco-elasticity described in terms of the stretch and rotation variables. We also study a limit problem, letting the magnitude of the internal force associated to dislocations tend to zero, in which case the deformation becomes incompatible and the equations takes the form of a coupled system of PDEs. For the limit problem we obtain global existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence from data in three space dimensions.

Occupation measure relaxations in variational problems: the role of convexity

Abstract:This work addresses the occupation measure relaxation of calculus of variations problems, which is an infinite-dimensional linear programming relaxation amenable to numerical approximation by a hierarchy of semidefinite optimization problems. We address the problem of equivalence of this relaxation to the original problem. Our main result provides sufficient conditions for this equivalence. These conditions, revolving around the convexity of the data, are simple and apply in very general settings that may be of arbitrary dimensions and may include pointwise and integral constraints, thereby considerably strengthening the existing results. Our conditions are also extended to optimal control problems. In addition, we demonstrate how these results can be applied in non-convex settings, showing that the occupation measure relaxation is at least as strong as the convexification using the convex envelope; in doing so, we prove that a certain weakening of the occupation measure relaxation is equivalent to the convex envelope. This opens the way to application of the occupation measure relaxation in situations where the convex envelope relaxation is known to be equivalent to the original problem, which includes problems in magnetism and elasticity.

Abstract:Despite its high significance in nonlinear elasticity, the neo-Hookean energy is still not known to admit minimisers in some appropriate admissible class. Using ideas from relaxation theory, we propose a larger minimisation space and a modified functional that coincides with the neo-Hookean energy on the original space. This modified energy is the sum of the neo-Hookean energy and a term penalising the singularities of the inverse deformation. The new functional attains its minimum in the larger space, so the initial question of existence of minimisers of the neo-Hookean energy is thus transformed into a question of regularity of minimisers of this new energy.

Abstract:In this paper we consider and generalize a model, recently proposed and analytically investigated in its quasi-stationary approximation by the authors, for visco-elasticity with large deformations and conditional compatibility, where the independent variables are the stretch and the rotation tensors. The model takes the form of a system of integro-differential coupled equations. Here, its derivation is generalized to consider mixed boundary conditions, which may represent a wider range of physical applications then the case with Dirichlet boundary conditions considered in our previous contribution. This also introduces nontrivial technical difficulties in the theoretical framework, related to the definition and the regularity of the solutions of elliptic operators with mixed boundary conditions. As a novel contribution, we develop the analysis of the fully non-stationary version of the system where we consider inertia. In this context, we prove the existence of a local in time weak solution in three space dimensions, employing techniques from PDEs and convex analysis.

Abstract:We study variational problems involving nonlocal supremal functionals $L^\infty(\Omega;\mathbb{R}^m) \ni u\mapsto {\rm ess sup}_{(x,y)\in \Omega\times \Omega} W(u(x), u(y)),$ where $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded, open set and $W:\mathbb{R}^m\times\mathbb{R}^m\to \mathbb{R}$ is a suitable function. Motivated by existence theory via the direct method, we identify a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^\infty$-weak$^\ast$ lower semicontinuity of these functionals, namely, separate level convexity of a symmetrized and suitably diagonalized version of the supremands. More generally, we show that the supremal structure of the functionals is preserved during the process of relaxation. Whether the same statement holds in the related context of double-integral functionals is currently still open. Our proof relies substantially on the connection between supremal and indicator functionals. This allows us to recast the relaxation problem into characterizing weak$^\ast$ closures of a class of nonlocal inclusions, which is of independent interest. To illustrate the theory, we determine explicit relaxation formulas for examples of functionals with different multi-well supremands.

Abstract:We study a variational framework to compare shapes, modeled as Radon measures on $${\mathbb{R}}^{N}$$, in order to quantify how they differ from isometric copies. To this purpose we discuss some notions of weak deformations termed reformations as well as integral functionals having some kind of isometries as minimizers. The approach pursued is based on the notion of pointwise Lipschitz constant leading to a matric space framework. In particular, to compare general shapes, we study this reformation problem by using the notion of transport plan and Wasserstein distances as in optimal mass transportation theory.

Abstract:We combine the recent relaxation approach with multiderivative Runge-Kutta methods to preserve conservation or dissipation of entropy functionals for ordinary and partial differential equations. Relaxation methods are minor modifications of explicit and implicit schemes, requiring only the solution of a single scalar equation per time step in addition to the baseline scheme. We demonstrate the robustness of the resulting methods for a range of test problems including the 3D compressible Euler equations. In particular, we point out improved error growth rates for certain entropy-conservative problems including nonlinear dispersive wave equations.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a novel relaxation modeling approach for partial differential equations (PDEs) involving convective and diffusive terms. We reformulate the original convection–diffusion problem as a system of hyperbolic equations coupled with relaxation terms. In contrast to existing literature on relaxation modeling, where the solution of the reformulated problem converges to certain types of equations in the diffusive limit, our formalism treats the augmented problem as a system of coupled hyperbolic equations with relaxation acting on both the convective flux and the source term. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the new system of equations satisfies Liu's sub-characteristic condition. To verify the robustness of our proposed approach, we perform numerical experiments on various important models, including nonlinear convection–diffusion problems with discontinuous coefficients. The results show the promising potential of our relaxation modeling approach for both pure and applied mathematical sciences, with applications in different models and areas.

Abstract:By means of a recursive formulation method, a generalized impulse-momentum-balance method, and a constraint violation elimination (CVE) method, we propose a new global simulation method for flexible multibody systems with kinematic structure changes. The constraint equations of a pair of adjacent bodies, considering body flexibility in Cartesian space, are derived for a recursive formulation. Constraint equations in configuration space, which are obtained from the constraints presented in this paper via recursive formulation, are very useful for modeling different kinematic structures and impacting governing equations. The novelty is that the impact governing equations, which calculate the jumps of generalized velocities, are modified by taking velocity-level CVE into consideration. Numerical examples are given to validate the presented method. Simulation results show that the new method can effectively suppress constraint drifts at the velocity level and stabilize constraint violations at the position level.

Abstract:Based on the local relaxed method and the system relaxed method of parallel multisplitting described by Frommer and Mayer, the paper presents a global relaxed non-stationary multisplitting multi-parameter method by introducing some relaxed parameters. Convergence of these methods when coefficient matrices are H-matrices is investigated. Efficiency of the global relaxed non-stationary multisplitting multi-parameter method is shown by numerical experiments. These indicate that, when choosing the approximately optimal relaxed parameters, the methods have a faster convergent rate than previous methods.
Finite Element Methods for the Stretching and Bending of Thin Structures with Folding

Abstract:In [Bonito et al., J. Comput. Phys. (2022)], a local discontinuous Galerkin method was proposed for approximating the large bending of prestrained plates, and in [Bonito et al., IMA J. Numer. Anal. (2023)] the numerical properties of this method were explored. These works considered deformations driven predominantly by bending. Thus, a bending energy with a metric constraint was considered. We extend these results to the case of an energy with both a bending component and a nonconvex stretching component, and we also consider folding across a crease. The proposed discretization of this energy features a continuous finite element space, as well as a discrete Hessian operator. We establish the $\Gamma$-convergence of the discrete to the continuous energy and also present an energy-decreasing gradient flow for finding critical points of the discrete energy. Finally, we provide numerical simulations illustrating the convergence of minimizers and the capabilities of the model.

Abstract:This paper continues to study the central relaxing schemes for system of hyperbolic conservation laws, based on the local relaxation approximation. Two classes of relaxing systems with stiff source term are introduced to approximate system of conservation laws in curvilinear coordinates. Based on them, the semi-implicit relaxing schemes are constructed as in [6, 12] without using any linear or nonlinear Riemann solvers. Numerical experiments for one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems are presented to demonstrate the performance and resolution of the current schemes.
