Abstract:In this lecture we discuss the properties of dense hadronic matter inside neutron stars. In particular, we pay attention to the role of strangeness in the core of neutron stars, by analysing the presence of baryons and mesons with strangeness. We consider two interesting possible scenarios in their interior, that is, the existence of hyperons leading to the so-called hyperon puzzle and the presence of a kaon condensed phase inside neutron stars.

Abstract:In this conference proceeding, we review important theoretical developments related to the production of strangeness in astrophysics. This includes its effects in supernova explosions, neutron stars, and compact-star mergers. We also discuss in detail how the presence of net strangeness affects the deconfinement to quark matter, expected to take place at large densities and/or temperatures. We conclude that a complete description of dense matter containing hyperons and strange quarks is fundamental for the understanding of modern high-energy astrophysics.

Strangeness production in neutron star matter

Abstract:Based on a dynamical model on particle production, the production and fraction of exotic components in neutron star matter are analyzed. It is found that there exists a small fraction of strangeness in twice saturation density matter. For five times saturation density matter, the fraction of strange baryons can be as high as 25-50\%, depending on the equation of state used. The neutron-proton asymmetry of dense matter does not significantly impact the strangeness fraction in neutron star matter. This research provides new insights into the strange components in neutron stars.

Abstract:This presentation in two parts starts with a brief review on the speed of sound in neutron star matter as inferred from observational data. It is pointed out that, in view the strong constraints imposed by observed properties of the heaviest neutron stars, the equation of state must be very stiff. Stringent limits can be set on the possible appearance of phase transitions in neutron star cores. The second part discusses issues concerning the occurance of strangeness degrees of freedom, in particular of hyperons, in neutron stars. Here a focus is on the role of repulsive hyperon-nuclear three-body forces, potentially resolving the so-called hyperon puzzle.

Abstract:We have studied strange star properties both at zero temperature and at finite temperatures and searched signatures of strange stars in gamma-ray, x-ray and radio astronomy. We have a set of Equations of State (EoS) for strange quark matter (SQM) and solving the TOV equations, we get the structure of strange stars. The maximum mass for a strange star decreases with the increase of temperature, because at high temperatures, the EoS become softer. One important aspect of strange star is that, surface tension depends on the size and structure of the star and is significantly larger than the conventional values. Moment of inertia is another important parameter for compact stars as by comparing theoretical values with observed estimate, it is possible to constrain the dense matter Equation of State. We hope that this approach will help us to decide whether the members of the double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039 are neutron stars or strange stars.

Properties of neutron stars and strangeness-mixed stars from a pion mean-field approach

Abstract:We investigate the properties of the static neutron stars and strangeness-mixed stars, based on the equations of state derived from a pion mean-field approach. Using the empirical data on the pion-nucleus scattering and bulk properties of nuclear matter, we have already fixed all the parameters in a previous work, where the nucleons and hyperons were shown to be modified in various nuclear medium. In the current work, we first examine the energy and pressure inside a neutron star. We show that the central densities in various neutron stars vary within the range of $(3-6)\rho_0$, where $\rho_0$ is the normal nuclear matter density. The mass-radius relations are obtained and discussed. As the slope parameter for neutron matter increases, the radii of the neutron stars increase with their masses fixed. We also study the strangeness-mixed stars or the hyperon stars using the same sets of the parameters. As the strangeness content of strange matter increases, the binding energy per nucleon is saturated and the corresponding equation of state becomes softened. Consequently, the central densities of the strangeness-mixed stars increase. Assuming that recently observed neutron stars are the strangeness-mixed ones, we find that the central densities increase. In the case of the pure strange stars, the central densities reach almost $(5-6)\rho_0$.

Recent progresses in strange quark stars

Abstract:According to the hypothesis that strange quark matter may be the true ground state of matter at extremely high densities, strange quark stars should be stable and could exist in the Universe. It is possible that pulsars may actually be strange stars, but not neutron stars. Here we present a short review on recent progresses in the field of strange quark stars. First, three popular phenomenological models widely used to describe strange quark matter are introduced, with special attention being paid on the corresponding equation of state in each model. Combining the equation of state with the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations, the inner structure and mass-radius relation can be obtained for the whole sequence of strange stars. Tidal deformability and oscillations (both radial and non-radial oscillations), which are sensitive to the composition and the equations of state, are then described. Hybrid stars as a special kind of quark stars are discussed. Several other interesting aspects of strange stars are also included. For example, strong gravitational wave emissions may be generated by strange stars through various mechanisms, which may help identify strange stars via observations. Especially, close-in strange quark planets with respect to their hosts may provide a unique test for the existence of strange quark objects. Fierce electromagnetic bursts could also be generated by strange stars. The energy may come from the phase transition of neutron stars to strange stars, or from the merger of binary strange stars. The collapse of the strange star crust can also release a huge amount of energy. It is shown that strange quark stars may be involved in short gamma-ray bursts and fast radio bursts.

Abstract:We consider a simple model for the strangeness radius of the nucleon. The model is based on vector meson dominance (VMD) and $\omega - \phi$ mixing in addition to a kaon cloud contribution. We find that the VMD contribution is similar in magnitude and of the same sign as the kaon contribution to the Sachs strangeness radius and is significantly larger than the kaon contribution to the Dirac radius. Strange quark stars: the role of excluded volume effects

Abstract:We study cold strange quark stars employing an enhanced version of the quark-mass density-dependent model which incorporates excluded volume effects to address non-perturbative QCD repulsive interactions. We provide a comparative analysis of our mass formula parametrization with previous models from the literature. We identify the regions within the parameter space where three-flavor quark matter is more stable than the most tightly bound atomic nucleus (stability window). Specifically, we show that excluded volume effects do not change the Gibbs free energy per baryon at zero pressure, rendering the stability window unaffected. The curves of pressure versus energy density exhibit various shapes -- convex upward, concave downward, or nearly linear -- depending on the mass parametrization. This behavior results in different patterns of increase, decrease, or constancy in the speed of sound as a function of baryon number density. We analyze the mass-radius relationship of strange quark stars, revealing a significant increase in maximum gravitational mass and a shift in the curves towards larger radii as the excluded volume effect intensifies. Excluded volume effects render our models compatible with all modern astrophysical constraints, including the properties of the recently observed low-mass compact object HESSJ1731.

Abstract:What if normal baryonic matter is compressed so tightly that atomic nuclei come into close contact? This question has been asked since 1930s. The first answer was presented by Lev Landau whose speculation has been developed, and the concept of neutron star is then popularized. However, another answer is related to strange star, which becomes worthy of attention especially after the establishment of the standard model of particle physics in 1960s. The basic ideas of this study are introduced pedagogically. We must point out emphatically that flavor symmetry and strong coupling between quarks would be essential in seeking true answer to the question. The final answer is expected to appear in the era of multimessenger astronomy. It is emphasized too that, besides the differences of global properties (e.g., mass-radius relation, maximum mass, tidal deformability), the strong-bound surface of strange star (rather than the gravity-bound one for conventional neutron star) could play an important role in identifying a strange star by astronomical observations.

Abstract:Strange quark matter in beta equilibrium at high densities is studied in a quark confinement model. Two equations of state are dynamically generated for the same set of model parameters used to describe the nucleon: one corresponds to a chiral restored phase with almost massless quarks and the other to a chiral broken phase. The chiral symmetric phase saturates at around five times the nuclear matter density. Using the equation of state for this phase, compact bare quark stars are obtained with radii and masses in the ranges R ~ 5?8 km and M ~ M?. The energy per baryon number decreases very slowly from the centre of the star to the periphery, remaining above the corresponding values for iron or nuclear matter, even at the edge. Our results point out that strange quark matter at very high densities may not be absolutely stable and the existence of an energy barrier between the two phases may prevent the compact quark stars from decaying to hybrid stars.

Abstract:Recent achievements of bare strange stars are briefly reviewed. A nascent protostrange star should he bare because of strong mass ejection and high temperature after the supernova detonation flame, And a crust can also hardly form except, for a super-Eddington accretion. The magnetosphere of a bare strange star is composed mainly of CL pair plasma, where both inner and enter vacuum gaps work for radio as well as high energy nonthermal emission. A featureless thermal spectrum is expected since no ion is above the quark surface, whilst electron cyclotron lines could appear in some bare strange stars with suitable magnetic fields. Various astrophysical implications of bare strange stars are discussed.

Abstract:Neutron stars offer a great opportunity to study highly compressed hadronic matter experimentally and theoretically. However, the so-called hyperon-puzzle arises at neutron star densities. The hyperon coexistence with other particles in compressed matter softens the equation of state and many widely accepted models fail to reproduce precise observations of large neutron star masses. Here, we propose a mechanism to retain the stiffness of the high density state with hyperons by considering the explicit momentum dependence of their in-medium potentials. Our approach modifies conventional strangeness threshold conditions and generates threshold effects on hyperons in high-density matter. We demonstrate these effects within the nonlinear derivative model, which incorporates baryon momentum-dependent fields based on empirical and microscopic studies. It turns out that even soft momentum-dependent strangeness fields do prohibit their populations in neutron star matter. Abstract:Two kinds of difficulties have challenged the physics community for many years: (1) knowing nature's building blocks (particle physics) and (2) understanding interacting many-body systems (many-body physics). Both of them exist in the research of quark matter and compact stars. This paper addresses the possibility that quark clustering, rather than a color super-conducting state, could occur in cold quark matter at realistic baryon densities of compact stars, since a weakly coupling treatment of the interaction between quarks might not be reliable. Cold quark matter is conjectured to be in a solid state if thermal kinematic energy is much lower than the interaction energy of quark clusters. Different manifestations of pulsar-like compact stars are discussed, as well as modeled in a regime of solid quark stars.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent suggestions that very massive pulsar (PSR J0952-0607) and very light compact object (HESS J1731-347) exist, in this article, we revisit the possibility of such objects being strange stars instead of the standard hadronic neutron stars. We study the possible presence of local anisotropy and how it affects the macroscopic properties of strange stars and compare our results with the recent constraints presented in the literature. We found that the presence of anisotropy increases the maximum mass, the radius of the canonical star, and its tidal deformability for positive values of $\lambda_{\rm BL}$ and the opposite for negative values. We also show that although we cannot rule out the possibility of very compact objects being standard hadronic neutron stars, strange stars easily fulfill most of the observational constraints.
