Abstract:We address the prime geodesic theorem in arithmetic progressions, and resolve conjectures of Golovchanski\uı-Smotrov (1999). In particular, we prove that the traces of closed geodesics on the modular surface do not equidistribute in the reduced residue classes of a given modulus.

Abstract:We establish the prime geodesic theorem for the modular surface with exponent $\frac{2}{3}+\varepsilon$, improving upon the long-standing exponent $\frac{25}{36}+\varepsilon$ of Soundararajan-Young (2013). This was previously known conditionally on the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions. Our argument goes through a well-trodden trail via the automorphic machinery, and refines the techniques of Iwaniec (1984) and Cai (2002) to a maximum extent. A key ingredient is an asymptotic for bilinear forms with a counting function in Kloosterman sums via hybrid Weyl-strength subconvex bounds for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions due to Young (2017), zero density estimates due to Heath-Brown (1995) near the edge of the critical strip, and an asymptotic for averages of Zagier $L$-series due to Balkanova-Frolenkov-Risager (2022). Furthermore, we strengthen our exponent to $\frac{5}{8}+\varepsilon$ conditionally on the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, which breaks the existing barrier.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}_g$ be the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper, we show that for any $\epsilon>0$, as $g\to \infty$, for a generic surface in $\mathcal{M}_g$, the error term in the Prime Geodesic Theorem is bounded from above by $g\cdot t^{\frac{3}{4}+\epsilon}$, up to a uniform constant multiplication. The expected value of the error term in the Prime Geodesic Theorem over $\mathcal{M}_g$ is also studied. As an application, we show that as $g\to \infty$, on a generic hyperbolic surface in $\mathcal{M}_g$ most closed geodesics of length significantly less than $\sqrt{g}$ are simple and non-separating, and most closed geodesics of length significantly greater than $\sqrt{g}$ are not simple, which confirms a conjecture of Lipnowski-Wright. A novel effective upper bound for intersection numbers on $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ is also established, when certain indices are large compared to $\sqrt{g+n}$.

Abstract:We prove a version of the prime number theorem for arithmetic progressions that is uniform enough to deduce the Siegel–Walfisz theorem, Hoheisel's asymptotic for intervals of length , a Brun–Titchmarsh bound, and Linnik's bound on the least prime in an arithmetic progression as corollaries. Our proof uses the Vinogradov–Korobov zero-free region, a log-free zero density estimate, and the Deuring–Heilbronn zero repulsion phenomenon. Improvements exist when the modulus is sufficiently powerful.

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.

Abstract:A conjecture of Erdős states that, for any large prime $q$, every reduced residue class $\pmod q$ can be represented as a product $p_1p_2$ of two primes $p_1,p_2\leq q$. We establish a ternary version of this conjecture, showing that, for any sufficiently large cube-free integer $q$, every reduced residue class $\pmod q$ can be written as $p_1p_2p_3$ with $p_1,p_2,p_3\leq q$ primes. We also show that, for any $\varepsilon > 0$ and any sufficiently large integer $q$, at least $(2/3-\varepsilon)\varphi(q)$ reduced residue classes $\pmod q$ can be represented as a product $p_1 p_2$ of two primes $p_1, p_2 \leq q$. The problems naturally reduce to studying character sums. The main innovation in the paper is the establishment of a multiplicative dense model theorem for character sums over primes in the spirit of the transference principle. In order to deal with possible local obstructions we use bounds for the logarithmic density of primes in certain unions of cosets of subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}_q^\times$ of small index and study in detail the exceptional case that there exists a quadratic character $\psi \pmod{q}$ such that $\psi(p) = -1$ for almost all primes $p \leq q$.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

Abstract:We prove analogues of the Green-Tao-Ziegler theorem on linear constellations in primes, in which the primes under consideration are restricted by certain arithmetic conditions. Our first main result is conditional upon Hooley's Riemann hypothesis and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed primitive roots. Our second main result is unconditional and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed Artin symbols in given Galois number fields. In the appendix we present an application of the second result in inverse Galois theory.

Abstract:The winding of a closed oriented geodesic around the cusp of the modular orbifold is computed by the Rademacher symbol, a classical function from the theory of modular forms. In this article, we introduce a new construction of winding numbers to record the winding of closed oriented geodesics about a prescribed cusp of a general cusped hyperbolic orbifold. For various arithmetic families of surfaces, this winding number can again be expressed by a Rademacher symbol, and access to the spectral theory of automorphic forms yields statistical results on the distribution of closed (primitive) oriented geodesics with respect to their winding.

Abstract:In 1992, Reid asked whether hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same geodesic length spectra are necessarily commensurable. While this is known to be true for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the non-arithmetic case is still open. Building towards a negative answer to this question, Futer and Millichap recently constructed infinitely many pairs of non-commensurable, non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have the same volume and whose length spectra begin with the same first $m$ geodesic lengths. In the present paper, we show that this phenomenon is surprisingly common in the arithmetic setting. In particular, given any arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold derived from a quaternion algebra, any finite subset $S$ of its geodesic length spectrum, and any $k \geq 2$, we produce infinitely many $k$-tuples of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds which are pairwise non-commensurable, have geodesic length spectra containing $S$, and have volumes lying in an interval of (universally) bounded length. The main technical ingredient in our proof is a bounded gaps result for prime ideals in number fields lying in Chebotarev sets which extends recent work of Thorner.

Abstract:In his recent research, the author improved the error term in the prime geodesic theorem for compact, even-dimensional, rank one locally symmetric spaces. It turned out that the obtained estimate $O(x^{2\rho-\frac{\rho}{n}}(\log x)^{-1})$ coincides with the best known results for compact Riemann surfaces, three manifolds, and manifolds with cusps, where $n$ stands for the dimension of the space, and $\rho$ is the half-sum of positive roots. The above bound was then reduced to $O(x^{2\rho-\rho\frac{2\cdot(2n)+1}{2n\cdot(2n)+1}}(\log x)^{\frac{n-1}{2n\cdot(2n)+1}-1}(\log\log x)^{\frac{n-1}{2n\cdot(2n)+1}+\varepsilon})$ in the Gallagherian sense, with $\varepsilon$ $>$ $0$, and the key role played by the counting function $\psi_{2n}(x)$. The purpose of this research is to prove that the latter $O$-term can be further reduced. To do so, we derive new explicit formulas for the functions $\psi_{j}(x)$, $j$ $\geq$ $n$, and conditional formula for $\psi_{n-1}(x)$. Applying the Gallagher-Koyama techniques, we deduce the asymptotics for $\psi_{0}(x)$, and the Gallagherian prime geodesic theorems. The obtained error terms $O(x^{2\rho-\rho\frac{2j+1}{2nj+1}}(\log x)^{\frac{n-1}{2nj+1}-1}(\log\log x)^{\frac{n-1}{2nj+1}+\varepsilon})$, $n-1$ $\leq$ $j$ $<$ $2n$, improve the $O$-term given above, with the optimal unconditional (conditional) size achieved for $j$ $=$ $n$ ($j$ $=$ $n-1$). If $j$ $=$ $n$ $\geq$ $4$, our new bound coincides with the best known estimate in the manifolds with cusps case. If $j$ $=$ $n-1$, the $O$-term fully agrees with the results in the Riemann surface case ($n$ $=$ $2$, $\rho$ $=$ $\frac{1}{2}(n-1)$ $=$ $\frac{1}{2}$), and the three manifolds case ($n$ $=$ $2$, $\rho$ $=$ $1$). Finally, for $j$ $=$ $n-1$, $n$ $\geq$ $4$, our result improves the best known bound in the manifolds with cusps case.

Ordinary primes in Hilbert modular varieties

Abstract:A well-known conjecture, often attributed to Serre, asserts that any motive over any number field has infinitely many ordinary reductions (in the sense that the Newton polygon coincides with the Hodge polygon). In the case of Hilbert modular cuspforms $f$ of parallel weight $(2, \cdots , 2)$, we show how to produce more ordinary primes by using the Sato-Tate equidistribution and combining it with the Galois theory of the Hecke field. Under the assumption of stronger forms of Sato-Tate equidistribution, we get stronger (but conditional) results. In the case of higher weights, we formulate the ordinariness conjecture for submotives of the intersection cohomology of proper algebraic varieties with motivic coefficients, and verify it for the motives whose $l$-adic Galois realisations are abelian on a finite index subgroup. We get some results for Hilbert cuspforms of weight $(3, \cdots , 3)$, weaker than those for $(2, \cdots , 2)$.

Abstract:We study the existence of products of primes in arithmetic progressions, building on the work of Ramaré and Walker. One of our main results is that if q is a large modulus, then any invertible residue class mod q contains a product of three primes where each prime is at most q6/5+ε . Our arguments use results from a wide range of areas, such as sieve theory or additive combinatorics, and one of our key ingredients, which has not been used in this setting before, is a result by Heath‐Brown on character sums over primes from his paper on Linnik's theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we establish function field versions of two classical conjectures on prime numbers. The first says that the number of primes in intervals (x,x+xϵ] is about xϵ/logx. The second says that the number of primes p<x in the arithmetic progression p≡a(modd), for d<x1−δ, is about π(x)ϕ(d), where ϕ is the Euler totient function. More precisely, for short intervals we prove: Let k be a fixed integer. Then πq(I(f,ϵ))∼#I(f,ϵ)k,q→∞ holds uniformly for all prime powers q, degree k monic polynomials f∈Fq[t] and ϵ0(f,q)≤ϵ, where ϵ0 is either 1k, or 2k if p∣k(k−1), or 3k if further p=2 and degf'≤1. Here I(f,ϵ)={g∈Fq[t]∣deg(f−g)≤ϵdegf}, and πq(I(f,ϵ)) denotes the number of prime polynomials in I(f,ϵ). We show that this estimation fails in the neglected cases. For arithmetic progressions we prove: let k be a fixed integer. Then πq(k;D,f)∼πq(k)ϕ(D),q→∞, holds uniformly for all relatively prime polynomials D,f∈Fq[t] satisfying ‖D‖≤qk(1−δ0), where δ0 is either 3k or 4k if p=2 and (f/D)' is a constant. Here πq(k) is the number of degree k prime polynomials and πq(k;D,f) is the number of such polynomials in the arithmetic progression P≡f(modd). We also generalize these results to arbitrary factorization types.

Geometric G-functions and Atypicality

Abstract:We describe a general method for giving $p$-adic interpretations of $G$-functions arising from degenerating periods of smooth projective algebraic varieties. Using this, we are able to implement a strategy due to André for bounding heights of moduli points where period functions acquire unusual algebraic relations. This leads to new results on Galois lower bounds for special moduli, and new cases of the Zilber-Pink conjecture. In particular, we establish the first Galois-orbit lower bounds on CM moduli in non-Shimura settings. As a more technical contribution, we introduce a refinement of the Pila-Zannier strategy capable of handling Zilber-Pink-type atypical intersection problems in arbitrary dimension and for arbitrary smooth projective families.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the distribution of the digital reverses of prime numbers, which we call the "reversed primes". We prove the infinitude of reversed primes in any arithmetic progression satisfying straightforward necessary conditions provided the base is sufficiently large. We indeed prove an effective Siegel--Walfisz type result for reversed primes, which has a larger admissible level of modulus than the classical case.

Abstract:In \cite{S}, Shyr derived an analogue of Dirichlet's class number formula for arithmetic Tori. We use this formula to derive a Brauer-Siegel formula for Tori, relating the Discriminant of a torus to the product of its regulator and class number. We apply this formula to derive asymptotics and lower bounds for Galois orbits of CM points in the Siegel modular variety $A_{g,1}$. Specifically, we ask that the sizes of these orbits grows like a power of Discriminant of the underlying endomorphism algebra. We prove this unconditionally in the case $g\leq 5$, and for all $g$ under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for CM fields. Along the way we derive a general transfer principle for torsion in ideal class groups of number fields.
