Abstract:We outline a proof of a remarkable conjecture of Labastida-Mari{\~n}o-Ooguri-Vafa about certain new algebraic structures of quantum link invariants and the integrality of infinite family of new topological invariants. Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.

Abstract:We conjecture a formula for the refined $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ Vafa-Witten invariants of any smooth surface $S$ satisfying $H_1(S,\mathbb{Z}) = 0$ and $p_g(S)>0$. The unrefined formula corrects a proposal by Labastida-Lozano and involves unexpected algebraic expressions in modular functions. We prove that our formula satisfies a refined $S$-duality modularity transformation. We provide evidence for our formula by calculating virtual $\chi_y$-genera of moduli spaces of rank 3 stable sheaves on $S$ in examples using Mochizuki's formula. Further evidence is based on the recent definition of refined $\mathrm{SU}(r)$ Vafa-Witten invariants by Maulik-Thomas and subsequent calculations on nested Hilbert schemes by Thomas (rank 2) and Laarakker (rank 3).

Volume conjecture for $SU(n)$-invariants

Abstract: This paper discuss an intrinsic relation among congruent relations \cite{CLPZ}, cyclotomic expansion and Volume Conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants. Motivated by the congruent relations for $SU(n)$ invariants obtained in our previous work \cite{CLPZ}, we study certain limits of the $SU(n)$ invariants at various roots of unit. First, we prove a new symmetry property for the $SU(n)$ invariants by using a symmetry of colored HOMFLYPT invariants. Then we propose some conjectural formulas including the cyclotomic expansion conjecture and volume conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants (specialization of colored HOMFLYPT invariants). We also give the proofs of these conjectural formulas for the case of figure-eight knot.

Abstract:In [MT2] the Vafa-Witten theory of complex projective surfaces is lifted to oriented $\mathbb C^*$-equivariant cohomology theories. Here we study the K-theoretic refinement. It gives rational functions in $t^{1/2}$ invariant under $t^{1/2}\leftrightarrow t^{-1/2}$ which specialise to numerical Vafa-Witten invariants at $t=1$. On the "instanton branch" the invariants give the virtual $\chi_{-t}^{}$-genus refinement of Göttsche-Kool. Applying modularity to their calculations gives predictions for the contribution of the "monopole branch". We calculate some cases and find perfect agreement. We also do calculations on K3 surfaces, finding Jacobi forms refining the usual modular forms, proving a conjecture of Göttsche-Kool. We determine the K-theoretic virtual classes of degeneracy loci using Eagon-Northcott complexes, and show they calculate refined Vafa-Witten invariants. Using this Laarakker [Laa] proves universality results for the invariants.

Refined invariants of finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras

Abstract:We define and study refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of contractible curves in complex algebraic 3-folds, alongside the cohomological Donaldson--Thomas theory of finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras. These Gopakumar-Vafa invariants can be constructed one of two ways: as cohomological BPS invariants of contraction algebras controlling the deformation theory of these curves, as defined by Donovan and Wemyss, or by feeding the moduli spaces that Katz used to define genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants into the machinery developed by Joyce et al. The conjecture that the two definitions give isomorphic results is a special case of a kind of categorified version of the strong rationality conjecture due to Pandharipande and Thomas, that we discuss and propose a means of proving. We prove the positivity of the cohomological/refined BPS invariants of all finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras. This result supports this strengthening of the strong rationality conjecture, as well as the conjecture of Brown and Wemyss stating that all finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras for appropriate symmetric quivers are isomorphic to contraction algebras.

Abstract:We construct a generalized Witten genus for spin$^c$ manifolds, which takes values in level 1 modular forms with integral Fourier expansion on a class of spin$^c$ manifolds called string$^c$ manifolds. We also construct a mod 2 analogue of the Witten genus for $8k+2$ dimensional spin manifolds. The Landweber-Stong type vanishing theorems are proven for the generalized Witten genus and the mod 2 Witten genus on string$^c$ and string (generalized) complete intersections in (product of) complex projective spaces respectively.
Refined Gromov-Witten invariants

Abstract:We study the enumerative geometry of stable maps to Calabi-Yau 5-folds $Z$ with a group action preserving the Calabi-Yau form. In the central case $Z=X \times \mathbb{C}^2$, where $X$ is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold with a group action scaling the holomorphic volume form non-trivially, we conjecture that the disconnected equivariant Gromov-Witten generating series of $Z$ returns the Nekrasov-Okounkov equivariant K-theoretic PT partition function of $X$ and, under suitable rigidity conditions, its refined BPS index. We show that in the unrefined limit the conjecture reproduces known statements about the higher genus Gromov-Witten theory of $X$; we prove it for $X$ the resolved conifold; and we establish a refined cycle-level local/relative correspondence for local del Pezzo surfaces, implying the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the conjecture when $X$ is the local projective plane. We further establish B-model physics predictions of Huang-Klemm for refined higher genus mirror symmetry for local $\mathbb{P}^2$. In particular, we prove that our refined Gromov-Witten generating series obey extended holomorphic anomaly equations, are quasi-modular functions of $\Gamma_1(3)$, have leading asymptotics at the conifold point given by the logarithm of the Barnes double-Gamma function, and satisfy a version of the higher genus Crepant Resolution Correspondence with the refined orbifold Gromov-Witten theory of $[\mathbb{C}^3/\mu_3]$. This refines results, and partially proves conjectures, of Lho-Pandharipande, Coates-Iritani, and Bousseau-Fan-Guo-Wu.

Higher rank flag sheaves on Surfaces and Vafa-Witten invariants

Abstract: We study moduli space of holomorphic triples $E_{1}\xrightarrow{\phi} E_{2}$, composed of torsion-free sheaves $E_{i}, i=1,2$ and a holomorphic mophism between them, over a smooth complex projective surface $S$. The triples are equipped with Schmitt stability condition [Alg Rep Th. 6. 1. pp 1-32, 2003]. We observe that when Schmitt stability parameter $q(m)$ becomes sufficiently large, the moduli space of triples benefits from having a perfect relative and absolute deformation-obstruction theory in some cases. We further generalize our construction by gluing triple moduli spaces, and extend the earlier work of Gholampour-Sheshmani-Yau [arXiv:1701.08899] where the obstruction theory of nested Hilbert schemes over the surface was studied. Here we extend the earlier results to the moduli space of chains$$E_{1}\xrightarrow{\phi_{1}} E_{2}\xrightarrow{\phi_{2}} \cdots \xrightarrow{\phi_{n-1}} E_{n},$$ where $\phi_{i}$ are injective morphisms and $rk(E_{i})\geq 1, \forall i$. There is a connection, by wallcrossing in the master space in the sense of Mochizuki, between the theory of such higher rank flags, and the theory of Higgs pairs on the surface, which provides the means to relate the flag invariants to the local DT invariants of threefold given by a line bundle on the surface, $X :=Tot(\mathcal{L} \to S)$. The latter, when $\mathcal{L}=\omega_{S}$, provides the means to compute the contribution of higher rank flag sheaves to partition function of Vafa-Witten theory on $X$.

Abstract:We construct a mod 2 analogue of the Witten genus for 8k+2 dimensional spin manifolds, as well as modular characteristic numbers for a class of spinc manifolds which we call stringc manifolds. When these spinc manifolds are actually spin, one recovers the original Witten genus on string manifolds. These genera vanish on string and stringc complete intersections respectively in complex projective spaces.

Abstract:We define higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a mathematical theory of sigma model coupled with gravity over any semi-positive symplectic manifolds. As applications, we verify the stablizing conjecture of symplectic 4-manifolds for simply connected elliptic surfaces and construct smooth 6-manifolds admitting infinitely many deformation classes of symplectic structures.

Abstract:We conjecture a structure formula for the $\mathrm{SU}(r)$ Vafa-Witten partition function for surfaces with holomorphic 2-form. The conjecture is based on $S$-duality and a structure formula for the vertical contribution previously derived by the third-named author using Gholampour-Thomas's theory of virtual degeneracy loci. For ranks $r=2,3$, conjectural expressions for the partition function in terms of the theta functions of $A_{r-1}, A_{r-1}^{\vee}$ and Seiberg-Witten invariants were known. We conjecture new expressions for $r=4,5$ in terms of the theta functions of $A_{r-1}, A_{r-1}^{\vee}$, Seiberg-Witten invariants, and continued fractions studied by Ramanujan. The vertical part of our conjectures is proved for low virtual dimensions by calculations on nested Hilbert schemes. The horizontal part of our conjectures gives predictions for virtual Euler characteristics of Gieseker-Maruyama moduli spaces of stable sheaves. In this case, our formulae are sums of universal functions with coefficients in Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. The universal functions, corresponding to different quantum vacua, are permuted under the action of the Galois group. For $r=6, 7$ we also find relations with Hauptmoduln of $\Gamma_0(r)$. We present $K$-theoretic refinements for $r=2,3,4$ involving weak Jacobi forms.

Abstract:We prove an asymptotic product formula for the refined BPS invariants associated with a local del Pezzo surface. Our formula governs the cohomological stabilization of the perverse filtration on the intersection cohomology of the moduli space of 1-dimensional semistable sheaves on a del Pezzo surface. Combined with the theory of Fourier transform of Maulik--Shen--Yin, we show that the perverse filtration matches asymptotically with the Chern filtration defined via tautological classes. In the case of the projective plane, our results resolve conjectures of Kononov--Pi--Shen.

Towards refined curve counting on the Enriques surface I: K-theoretic refinements

Abstract:We conjecture an explicit formula for the $K$-theoretically refined Vafa-Witten invariants of the Enriques surface. By a wall-crossing argument the conjecture is equivalent to a new conjectural formula for the K-theoretically refined Pandharipande-Thomas invariants of the local Enriques surface. Evidence for the conjecture is given in several cases. We also comment on the case of K3 surfaces previously studied by Thomas.

Abstract:We introduce new invariants of the projective plane (and, more generally, of certain toric surfaces) that arise from the appropriate enumeration of real elliptic curves. These invariants admit a refinement (according to the quantum index) similar to the one introduced by Grigory Mikhalkin in the rational case. We also construct tropical counterparts of the refined elliptic invariants under consideration and establish a tropical algorithm allowing one to compute, {\it via} a suitable version of the correspondence theorem, the above invariants.

Abstract:We consider three different families of Vafa-Witten invariants of $K3$ surfaces. In each case, the partition function that encodes the Vafa-Witten invariants is given by combinations of twisted Dedekind $\eta$-functions. By utilising known properties of these $\eta$-functions, we obtain exact formulae for each of the invariants and prove that they asymptotically satisfy all higher-order Tur\'{a}n inequalities.

Abstract:Given any field $k$ (not necessarily perfect), we study the smoothing of a semistable Fano variety over $k$. In characteristic 0, the reduced semistable Fano degenerate fibers of Mori fibrations are classified. In positive characteristic, under a suitable $W_2$ lifting assumption, we prove that a semistable Fano variety always appears as a degenerate fiber in a semistable family if it has a global log structure (in the sense of Fontaine-Illusie-Kato) of semistable type. A similar smoothing result over a mixed characteristic base is also obtained.

Abstract:Using reduced Gromov–Witten theory, we define new invariants which capture the enumerative geometry of curves on holomorphic symplectic 4-folds. The invariants are analogous to the BPS counts of Gopakumar and Vafa for Calabi–Yau 3-folds, Klemm and Pandharipande for Calabi–Yau 4-folds, and Pandharipande and Zinger for Calabi–Yau 5-folds. We conjecture that our invariants are integers and give a sheaf-theoretic interpretation in terms of reduced 4-dimensional Donaldson–Thomas invariants of one-dimensional stable sheaves. We check our conjectures for the product of two K 3 surfaces and for the cotangent bundle of . Modulo the conjectural holomorphic anomaly equation, we compute our invariants also for the Hilbert scheme of two points on a K 3 surface. This yields a conjectural formula for the number of isolated genus 2 curves of minimal degree on a very general hyperkähler 4-fold of -type. The formula may be viewed as a 4-dimensional analogue of the classical Yau–Zaslow formula concerning counts of rational curves on K 3 surfaces. In the course of our computations, we also derive a new closed formula for the Fujiki constants of the Chern classes of tangent bundles of both Hilbert schemes of points on K 3 surfaces and generalized Kummer varieties.

Gromov--Witten Invariants of Non-Convex Complete Intersections in Weighted Projective Stacks

Abstract:In this paper we compute genus 0 orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of Calabi--Yau threefold complete intersections in weighted projective stacks, regardless of convexity conditions. The traditional quantumn Lefschetz principle may fail even for invariants with ambient insertions. Using quasimap wall-crossing, we are able to compute invariants with insertions from a specific subring of the Chen--Ruan cohomology, which contains all the ambient cohomology classes. Quasimap wall-crossing gives a mirror theorem expressing the I-function in terms of the J-function via a mirror map. The key of this paper is to find a suitable GIT presentation of the target space, so that the mirror map is invertible. An explicit formula for the I-function is given for all those target spaces and many examples with explicit computations of invariants are provided.
