Abstract:Kemeny's constant of a simple connected graph $G$ is the expected length of a random walk from $i$ to any given vertex $j \neq i$. We provide a simple method for computing Kemeny's constant for 1-separable via effective resistance methods from electrical network theory. Using this formula, we furnish a simple proof that the path graph on $n$ vertices maximizes Kemeny's constant for the class of undirected trees on $n$ vertices. Applying this method again, we simplify existing expressions for the Kemeny's constant of barbell graphs and demonstrate which barbell maximizes Kemeny's constant. This 1-separation identity further allows us to create sufficient conditions for the existence of Braess edges in 1-separable graphs. We generalize the notion of the Braess edge to Braess sets, collections of non-edges in a graph such that their addition to the base graph increases the Kemeny constant. We characterize Braess sets in graphs with any number of twin pendant vertices, generalizing work of Kirkland et.~al.~\cite{kirkland2016kemeny} and Ciardo \cite{ciardo2020braess}.

Abstract:On trees of fixed order, we show a direct relation between Kemeny's constant and Wiener index, and provide a new formula of Kemeny's constant from the relation with a combinatorial interpretation. Moreover, the relation simplifies proofs of several known results for extremal trees in terms of Kemeny's constant for random walks on trees. Finally, we provide various families of co-Kemeny's mates, which are two non-isomorphic connected graphs with the same Kemeny's constant, and we also give a necessary condition for a tree to attain maximum Kemeny's constant for trees with fixed diameter.

Edge Addition and the Change in Kemeny's Constant

Abstract:Given a connected graph $G$, Kemeny's constant $\mathcal{K}({G})$ measures the average travel time for a random walk to reach a randomly selected vertex. It is known that when an edge is added to $G$, the value of Kemeny's constant may either decrease, increase, or stay the same. In this paper, we present a quantitative analysis of this behaviour when the initial graph is a tree with $n$ vertices. We prove that when an edge is added into a tree on $n$ vertices, the maximum possible increase in Kemeny's constant is roughly $\frac{2}{3}n,$ while the maximum possible decrease is roughly $\frac{3}{16}n^2$. We also identify the trees, and the edges to be added, that correspond to the maximum increase and maximum decrease. Throughout, both matrix theoretic and graph theoretic techniques are employed.

Abstract:We study Nordhaus-Gaddum problems for Kemeny's constant $\mathcal{K}(G)$ of a connected graph $G$. We prove bounds on $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ and the product $\mathcal{K}(G)\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})$ for various families of graphs. In particular, we show that if the maximum degree of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is $n-O(1)$ or $n-\Omega(n)$, then $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ is at most $O(n)$.

Abstract:Win proved a well-known result that the graph G of connectivity κ ( G ) with α ( G ) ≤ κ ( G ) + k − 1 ( k ≥ 2) has a spanning k -ended tree, i.e., a spanning tree with at most k leaves. In this paper, the authors extended the Win theorem in case when κ ( G ) = 1 to the following: Let G be a simple connected graph of order large enough such that α ( G ) ≤ k + 1 ( k ≥ 3) and such that the number of maximum independent sets of cardinality k + 1 is at most n − 2 k − 2. Then G has a spanning k -ended tree.

Abstract:Furstenberg-Weiss have extended Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions to trees by showing that a large subset of the tree contains arbitrarily long arithmetic subtrees. We study higher dimensional versions that analogously extend the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem by demonstrating the existence of certain arithmetic structures in large subsets of a cartesian product of trees.

Abstract:In this paper we study the following extremal graph theoretic problem: Given an undirected Eulerian graph $G$, which Eulerian orientation minimizes or maximizes the number of arborescences? We solve the minimization for the complete graph $K_n$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$, and for the so-called double graphs, where there are even number of edges between any pair of vertices. In fact, for $K_n$ we prove the following stronger statement. If $T$ is a tournament on $n$ vertices with out-degree sequence $d_1^+,\dots ,d^+_n$, then $$\mathrm{allarb}(T)\geq \frac{1}{n}\left(\prod_{k=1}^n(d^+_k+1)+\prod_{k=1}^nd^+_k\right),$$ where $\mathrm{allarb}(T)$ is the total number of arborescences. Equality holds if and only if $T$ is a locally transitive tournament. We also give an upper bound for the number of arborescences of an Eulerian orientation for an arbitrary graph $G$. This upper bound can be achieved on $K_n$ for infinitely many $n$.

Abstract:Kemeny's constant measures how fast a random walker moves around in a graph. Expressions for Kemeny's constant can be quite involved, and for this reason, many lines of research focus on graphs with structure that makes them amenable to more in-depth study (for example, regular graphs, acyclic graphs, and 1-connected graphs). In this article, we study Kemeny's constant for random walks on threshold graphs, which are an interesting family of graphs with properties that make examining Kemeny's constant difficult; that is, they are usually not regular, not acyclic, and not 1-connected. This article is a showcase of various techniques for calculating Kemeny's constant and related random walk parameters for graphs. We establish explicit formulae for $\mathcal{K}(G)$ in terms of the construction code of a threshold graph, and completely determine the ordering of the accessibility indices of vertices in threshold graphs.

Abstract:We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.

Abstract:We study the class of graphs known as k-trees through the lens of Joyal's theory of combinatorial species (and an equivariant extension known as '$\Gamma$-species' which incorporates data about 'structural' group actions). This culminates in a system of recursive functional equations giving the generating function for unlabeled k-trees which allows for fast, efficient computation of their numbers. Enumerations up to k = 10 and n = 30 (for a k-tree with (n+k-1) vertices) are included in tables, and Sage code for the general computation is included in an appendix.

Abstract:R.P. Stanley defined a invariant for graphs called the chromatic symmetric function and conjectured it is complete invariant for trees. Miezaki et al. generalised the chromatic symmetric function and defined the Kneser chromatic functions denoted by $\{X_{K_{\mathbb{N},k}}\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$, and rephrase Stanley's conjecture that $X_{K_{\mathbb{N},1}}$ is a complete invariant for trees. This paper shows $X_{K_{\mathbb{N},2}}$ is a complete invariant for trees.

Abstract:A graph $H$ is common if its Ramsey multiplicity, i.e., the minimum number of monochromatic copies of $H$ contained in any $2$-edge-coloring of $K_n$, is asymptotically the same as the number of monochromatic copies in the random $2$-edge-coloring of $K_n$. Erdős conjectured that every complete graph is common, which was disproved by Thomason in the 1980s. Till today, a classification of common graphs remains a widely open challenging problem. Grzesik, Lee, Lidický and Volec [Combin. Prob. Comput. 31 (2022), 907--923] conjectured that every $k$-apex of any connected Sidorenko graph is common. We prove for $k\le 5$ that the $k$-apex of any tree is common.

Simplicial effective resistance and enumeration of spanning trees

Abstract:A graph can be regarded as an electrical network in which each edge is a resistor. This point of view relates combinatorial quantities, such as the number of spanning trees, to electrical ones such as effective resistance. The second and third authors have extended the combinatorics/electricity analogy to higher dimension and expressed the simplicial analogue of effective resistance as a ratio of weighted tree enumerators. In this paper, we first use that ratio to prove a new enumeration formula for color-shifted complexes, confirming a conjecture by Aalipour and the first author, and generalizing a result of Ehrenborg and van Willigenburg on Ferrers graphs. We then use the same technique to recover an enumeration formula for shifted complexes, first proved by Klivans and the first and fourth authors. In each case, we add facets one at a time, and give explicit expressions for simplicial effective resistances of added facets by constructing high-dimensional analogues of currents and voltages (respectively homological cycles and cohomological cocycles).

Abstract:We prove a theorem ensuring that the compositions of certain Ramsey families are still Ramsey. As an application, we show that in any finite coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ there is an infinite set $A$ and an as large as desired finite set $B$ with $(A+B)\cup (AB)$ monochromatic, answering a question from a recent paper of Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson. In fact, we prove an iterated version of this result that also generalizes a Ramsey theorem of Bergelson and Moreira that was previously only known to hold for fields. Our main new technique is an extension of the color focusing method that involves trees rather than sequences.

Abstract:Let G be a graph and k be a positive integer, and let Kc(G,k) denote the number of Kempe equivalence classes for the k -colorings of G . In 2006, Mohar noted that Kc(G,k)=1 if G is bipartite. As a generalization, we show that Kc(G,k)=1 if G is formed from a bipartite graph by adding any number of edges less than ⌈k/2⌉2+⌊k/2⌋2 . We show that our result is tight (up to lower order terms) by constructing, for each k≥8 , a graph G formed from a bipartite graph by adding (k2+8k−45+1)/4 edges such that Kc(G,k)≥2 . This refutes a recent conjecture of Higashitani–Matsumoto.

Abstract:The problem of counting spanning trees of graphs or networks is a fundamental and crucial area of research in combinatorics, while has numerous important applications in statistical physics, network theory and theoretical computer science. Very recently, Kosar, Zaman, Ali and Ullah obtained a nice formula on the number of spanning trees of a K 5 -chain network K 5 l constructed by connecting l copys of complete graphs K 5 . They made extensive use of matrix theory and spectral graph theory, especially the normalized Laplacian of graphs. In this paper, by using a rather simple and more physical treatment (the mesh-star transformation in electrical network) without any linear algebra, we generalize their result to K n -chain graphs and -ring graphs. The results show that there is a simple relation between the number of spanning trees of the K n -chain graph L n l and the K n -ring graph C n l . We also calculate the corresponding tree entropy (or so called "the asymptotic growth constant'') and find that the tree entropy of the corresponding K n -chain graphs and K n -ring graphs are totally the same.

Abstract:For integer $k\geq2,$ a spanning $k$-ended-tree is a spanning tree with at most $k$ leaves. Motivated by the closure theorem of Broersma and Tuinstra [Independence trees and Hamilton cycles, J. Graph Theory 29 (1998) 227--237], we provide tight spectral conditions to guarantee the existence of a spanning $k$-ended-tree in a connected graph of order $n$ with extremal graphs being characterized. Moreover, by adopting Kaneko's theorem [Spanning trees with constraints on the leaf degree, Discrete Appl. Math. 115 (2001) 73--76], we also present tight spectral conditions for the existence of a spanning tree with leaf degree at most $k$ in a connected graph of order $n$ with extremal graphs being determined, where $k\geq1$ is an integer.

Abstract:We show that a randomly perturbed digraph, where we start with a dense digraph $D_\alpha$ and add a small number of random edges to it, will typically contain a fixed orientation of a bounded degree spanning tree. This answers a question posed by Araujo, Balogh, Krueger, Piga and Treglown and generalizes the corresponding result for randomly perturbed graphs by Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov. More specifically, we prove that there exists a constant $c = c(\alpha, \Delta)$ such that if $T$ is an oriented tree with maximum degree $\Delta$ and $D_\alpha$ is an $n$-vertex digraph with minimum semidegree $\alpha n$, then the graph obtained by adding $cn$ uniformly random edges to $D_\alpha$ will contain $T$ with high probability.
