Abstract:We study the behaviour of conductors of L-functions associated to certain Weil--Deligne representations under twisting. For each global field K we prove a sharp upper bound for the conductor of the Rankin--Selberg L-function associated to a pair of abelian varieties.

Abstract:This is the first part of a series of papers where the behaviour of the invariants under twist by Dirichlet characters is studied for $L$-functions of degree 2. Here we show, under suitable conditions, that degree and internal shift remain unchanged under twist. The ultimate goal of the series is to prove a general version of Weil converse theorem with minimal assumptions on the shape of the functional equation of the twists.

Abstract:Following the work of Mestre, we use Weil's explicit formulas to compute explicit lower bounds on the conductors of elliptic curves and abelian varieties over number fields. Moreover, we obtain bounds for the conductor of elliptic curves and abelian varieties over $\mathbb{Q}$ with specified bad reduction and over number fields. As an application, for specific fields, we prove the non-existence of abelian varieties with everywhere good reduction.

Abstract:In a previous paper we proved that if an $L$-function $F$ from the Selberg class has degree $2$, its conductor $q_F$ is a prime number and $F$ is weakly twist-regular at all primes $p\neq q_F$, then $F$ has a polynomial Euler product. In this paper we extend this result to $L$-functions of degree 2 with square-free conductor $q_F$, which are weakly twist-regular at all primes $p\nmid q_F$

Abstract:Let $F/\bbQ_p$ be a non-Archimedean local field, and $G_F$ be the absolute Galois group of $F$. Let $\rho_1$ and $\rho_2$ be two finite-dimensional complex representations of $G_F$. Let $\psi$ be a nontrivial additive character of $F$. Then, the question is: What is the twisting formula for the root number $W(\rho_1\otimes\rho_2,\psi)$?} In general, the answer to this question is not yet known. However, if one of $\rho_i \quad(i=1,2)$ is one-dimensional with ``sufficiently'' large conductor, then in [13], Deligne gave a twisting formula for $W(\rho_1\otimes\rho_2,\psi)$. Later, in [12], Deligne and Henniart gave a general twisting formula for a {\it zero}-dimensional virtual representation twisted by a finite-dimensional representation of $G_F$. In this paper, we first extend Deligne's twisting formula for U-isotropic Heisenberg representation of dimension prime $p$, then we further extend Deligne-Henniart's result. Finally, we provide two very important applications of our twisting formula: -- (i) invariant formula for the local root numbers for U-isotropic Heisenberg representations, and (ii) a converse theorem on the Galois side.

On the central value of Rankin $L$-functions for self-dual algebraic representations of linear groups over totally real fields

Abstract:Deligne has formulated extremely influential conjectures about certain special values of the $L$-functions of (Grothendieck) motives over a number field $F$. Given the conjectural dictionary between motives and 'algebraic' automorphic representations of $\textrm{GL}(N, {\mathbb A}_F)$, where ${\mathbb A}_F$ denotes the adèles of $F$, they translate into conjectures concerning the $L$-functions of these automorphic representations. These complex representations, when they are 'regular', can be conjugated by the automorphisms of the complex field ${\mathbb C}$. It then follows, as a weak consequence of Deligne's conjectures, that the vanishing at critical points (integers of half-integers) of the automorphic $L$-functions should be invariant by automorphisms of ${\mathbb C}$. If $F$ is totally imaginary, this has been proven by Moeglin, for standard or Rankin $L$-functions. Here we extend the result to Rankin $L$-fuctions for totally real fields $F$, under a parity and a regularity assumption. The proof relies on Eisenstein cohomology and the Zucker conjecture (a theorem of Looijenga and Saper-Stern.)

Abstract:In an earlier paper of W. Casselman, the theory of local newforms and conductors was initiated. Later, Roberts and Schmidt studied local newforms for the metaplectic group of rank 1. In this paper we define and calculate conductors of irreducible genuine representations of the metaplectic group of rank 1 over non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero and of odd residual characteristic. Moreover, we shall give an explicit formulae for dimensions of spaces of local newforms, and show a compatibility with the local theta correspondence.

Abstract:We present a Rankin-Selberg integral on the exceptional group $G_2$ which represents the L-function for generic cuspidal representations of $\widetilde{SL}_2\times GL_2$. As an application, we show that certain Fourier-Jacobi type periods on $G_2$ are non-vanishing.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a linear semisimple algebraic group and $B$ its Borel subgroup. Let $\mathbb{T}\subset B$ be the maximal torus. We study the inductive construction of Bott-Samelson varieties to obtain recursive formulas for the twisted motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in $G/B$. To this end we introduce two families of operators acting on the equivariant K-theory $K_\mathbb{T}(G/B)[y]$, the right and left Demazure-Lusztig operators depending on a parameter. The twisted motivic Chern classes coincide (up to normalization) with the K-theoretic stable envelopes. Our results imply wall-crossing formulas for a change of the weight chamber and slope parameters. The right and left operators generate a twisted double Hecke algebra. We show that in the type $A$ this algebra acts on the Laurent polynomials. This action is a natural lift of the action on $K_\mathbb{T}(G/B)[y]$ with respect to the Kirwan map. We show that the left and right twisted Demazure-Lusztig operators provide a recursion for twisted motivic Chern classes of matrix Schubert varieties.

Ramification of Tate modules for rank $2$ Drinfeld modules

Abstract:In this paper, we study the ramification of extensions of a function field generated by division points of rank 2 Drinfeld modules. Also conductors of certain rank 2 Drinfeld modules are defined as analogues of those for elliptic curves. A calculation of these conductors allows us to show an analogue of Szpiro's conjecture under a certain limited situation.

Abstract:In this article, we aim to establish a prototype result regarding lower bounds of (joint) distributions of central $L'$-values through extending a method of Radziwill and Soundararajan of proving conditional bounds for distributions of central $L$-values (via the one-level density of low-lying zeros of involving $L$-functions). To illustrate this, we give several conditional bounds towards joint distributions of central $L'$-values and orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups in rank-one families of quadratic twists. As an application, we derive a simultaneous non-vanishing result for central $L'$-values in families of quadratic twists of triples of holomorphic modular forms.

Abstract:We study the distribution of ranks of elliptic curves in quadratic twist families using Iwasawa-theoretic methods, contributing to the understanding of Goldfeld's conjecture. Given an elliptic curve $ E/\mathbb{Q} $ with good ordinary reduction at $ 2 $ and $ \lambda_2(E/\mathbb{Q}) = 0 $, we use Matsuno's Kida-type formula to construct quadratic twists $ E^{(d)} $ such that $ \lambda_2(E^{(d)}/\mathbb{Q}) $ remains unchanged or increases by $ 2 $. When the root number of $E^{(d)}$ is $-1$ and the Tate-Shafarevich group $Sha(E^{(d)}/\mathbb{Q})[2^\infty] $ is finite, this yields quadratic twists with Mordell--Weil rank $ 1 $. These results support the conjectural expectation that, on average, half of the quadratic twists in a family have rank $ 0 $ and half have rank $ 1 $. In the cases we consider we obtain asymptotic lower bounds for the number of twists by squarefree numbers $d\leq X$ which match with the conjectured value up to an explicit power of $\log X$. They complement recent groundbreaking results of Smith on Goldfeld's conjecture.

On Converse Theorems for Hilbert Modular Forms Assuming Unramified Twists

Abstract:We prove two results on converse theorems for Hilbert modular forms over totally real fields of degree $r>1$. The first result recovers a Hilbert modular form (of some level) from an $L$-series satisfying functional equations twisted by all the unramified Hecke characters. The second result assumes both the 'unramified' functional equations and an Euler product, and recovers a Hilbert modular form of the expected level predicted by the shape of the functional equations. Our result generalizes the current converse theorems for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ in the case of Hilbert modular forms in that we completely remove the assumptions on ramified twists.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the unitary representation theory of $SL_2(\mathbb R)$ to understand the Rankin-Cohen brackets for modular forms. Then we use this interpretation to study the corresponding deformation problems that Paula Cohen, Yuri Manin and Don Zagier initiated. Two uniqueness results are established.

Conductor exponents for families of hyperelliptic curves

Abstract:We compute the conductor exponents at odd places using the machinery of cluster pictures of curves for three infinite families of hyperelliptic curves. These are families of Frey hyperelliptic curves constructed by Kraus and Darmon in the study of the generalised Fermat equations of signatures $(r,r,p)$ and $(p,p,r)$, respectively. Here, $r$ is a fixed prime number and $p$ is a prime that is allowed to vary. In the context of the modular method, Billerey-Chen-Dieulefait-Freitas computed all conductor exponents for the signature $(r,r,p)$. We recover their computations at odd places, providing an alternative approach. In a similar setup, Chen-Koutsianas computed all conductor exponents for the signature $(p,p,5)$. We extend their work to the general case of signature $(p,p,r)$ at odd places. Our work can also be used to compute local arithmetic data for the curves in these families.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a unitary cuspidal automorphic representation of $\text{GL}_{4}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$. Let $f \geq 1$ be given. We show that there exists infinitely many primitive even (resp. odd) Dirichlet characters $\chi$ with conductor co-prime to $f$ such that $L(s, \pi \otimes \chi)$ is non-vanishing at the central point. Our result has applications for the construction of $p$-adic $L$-functions for $\text{GSp}_{4}$ following Loeffler-Pilloni-Skinner-Zerbes, the Bloch-Kato conjecture and the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for abelian surfaces following Loeffler-Zerbes, strong multiplicity one results for paramodular cuspidal representations of $\text{GSp}_{4}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ and the rationality of the central values of $\text{GSp}_{4}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ $L$-functions in the remaining non-regular weight case.
