Abstract:Effective field theories are the most general tool for the description of low energy phenomena. They are universal and systematic: they can be formulated for any low energy systems we can think of and offer a clear guide on how to calculate predictions with reliable error estimates, a feature that is called power counting. These properties can be easily understood in Wilsonian renormalization, in which effective field theories are the low energy renormalization group evolution of a more fundamental ---perhaps unknown or unsolvable--- high energy theory. In nuclear physics they provide the possibility of a theoretically sound derivation of nuclear forces without having to solve quantum chromodynamics explicitly. However there is the problem of how to organize calculations within nuclear effective field theory: the traditional knowledge about power counting is perturbative but nuclear physics is not. Yet power counting can be derived in Wilsonian renormalization and there is already a fairly good understanding of how to apply these ideas to non-perturbative phenomena and in particular to nuclear physics. Here we review a few of these ideas, explain power counting in two-nucleon scattering and reactions with external probes and hint at how to extend the present analysis beyond the two-body problem.

Abstract:We give a short overview of the renormalization properties of rectangular Wilson loops, the Polyakov loop correlator and the cyclic Wilson loop. We then discuss how to renormalize loops with more than one intersection, using the simplest non-trivial case as an illustrative example. Our findings expand on previous treatments. The generalized exponentiation theorem is applied to the Polyakov loop correlator and used to renormalize linear divergences in the cyclic Wilson loop.

Renormalization of asymmetric staple-shaped Wilson-line operators in lattice and continuum perturbation theory

Abstract:In this work, we study the renormalization of nonlocal quark bilinear operators containing an asymmetric staple-shaped Wilson line at the one-loop level in both lattice and continuum perturbation theory. These operators enter the first-principle calculation of transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in lattice QCD using the formulation of large momentum effective theory. We provide appropriate RI′ -type conditions that address the power and logarithmic divergences, as well as the mixing among staple operators of different Dirac structures, using a number of different possible projectors. A variant of RI′ , including calculations of rectangular Wilson loops, which cancel the pinch-pole singularities of the staple operators at infinite length and reduce residual power divergences, is also employed. We calculate at one-loop order the conversion matrix, which relates the quasi-TMDPDFs in the RI′ -type schemes to the reference scheme MS ̄ for arbitrary values of the renormalization momentum scale and of the dimensions of the staple. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.114501 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:In previous work, I described several examples combining reduction and emergence: where reduction is understood a la Ernest Nagel, and emergence is understood as behaviour or properties that are novel (by some salient standard). Here, my aim is again to reconcile reduction and emergence, for a case which is apparently more problematic than those I treated before: renormalization. Renormalization is a vast subject. So I confine myself to emphasizing how the modern approach to renormalization (initiated by Wilson and others between 1965 and 1975), when applied to quantum field theories, illustrates both Nagelian reduction and emergence. My main point is that the modern understanding of how renormalizability is a generic feature of quantum field theories at accessible energies gives us a conceptually unified family of Nagelian reductions. That is worth saying since philosophers tend to think of scientific explanation as only explaining an individual event, or perhaps a single law, or at most deducing one theory as a special case of another. Here we see a framework in which there is a space of theories endowed with enough structure that it provides a family of reductions.

Abstract:This paper traces the origin of renormalization group concepts back to two strands of 1950s high energy physics: the causal perturbation theory programme, which gave rise to the Stueckelberg-Petermann renormalization group, and the debate about the consistency of quantum electrodynamics, which gave rise to the Gell-Mann-Low renormalization group. Recognising the different motivations that shaped these early approaches sheds light on the formal and interpretive diversity we find in contemporary renormalization group methods.

Abstract:We consider a functional relation between a given Wilsonian RG flow, which has to be related to a specific coarse-graining procedure, and an infinite family of (UV cutoff) scale dependent field redefinitions. Within this framework one can define a family of Wilsonian proper-time exact RG equations associated to an arbitrary regulator function. New applications of these RG flow schemes to the Ising Universality class in three dimensions in the derivative expansion are shortly illustrated.

Abstract:We survey the recent progress made in understanding non equilibrium dynamics in closed random systems. The emphasis is on the important role played by concepts from quantum information theory and on the application of systematic renormalization group methods to capture universal aspects of the dynamics. Finally we outline some outstanding open questions, which includee the description of the many-body localization phase transition and identifying physical systems that will allow systematic experimental study of these phenomena.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics B, Ahead of Print. The remarkable technical contributions of Michael E. Fisher to statistical physics and the development of the renormalization group are widely known and deeply influential. But less well known is his early and profound appreciation of the way in which renormalization group created a revolution in our understanding of how physics — in fact, all science — is practiced and the concomitant adjustment that needs to be made to our conception of the purpose and philosophy of science. In this chapter, I attempt to redress this imbalance, with examples from Fisher's writings and my own work. It is my hope that this tribute will help remove some of the confusion that surrounds the scientific usage of minimal models and renormalization group concepts, as well as their limitations, in the ongoing effort to understand emergence in complex systems.

Abstract:$ $In this paper we present a systematic treatment for fundamental renormalization of quantum electrodynamics in real space. Although the standard renormalization is an old school problem in this case, it has not yet been completely done in position space. The most important difference with well-known differential renormalization is that we do the whole procedure in coordinate space without need to transformation to momentum space. Specially, we directly derive the conterterms in real space. This problem becomes important when the translational symmetry of the system breaks somehow explicitly (for example by nontrivial boundary condition (BC) on the fields). In this case, one is not able to move to momentum space by a simple Fourier transformation. Therefore, in the context of renormalized perturbation theory, by imposing the renormalization conditions, counterterms in coordinate space will depend directly on the fields BCs (or background topology). Trivial BC or trivial background lead to the usual standard conterterms. If the counterterms modify then the quantum corrections of any physical quantity are different from those in free space where we have the translational invariance. We also show that, up to order $\alpha$, our counterterms are reduced to usual standard terms derived in free space.

Abstract:We continue the study of the Wilson line representation of conformal blocks in two-dimensional conformal field theory; these have an alternative interpretation as gravitational Wilson lines in the context of the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence. The gravitational Wilson line involves a path-ordered exponential of the stress tensor, and its expectation value can be computed perturbatively in an expansion in inverse powers of the central charge $c$. The short-distance singularities which occur in the associated stress tensor correlators require systematic regularization and renormalization prescriptions, whose consistency with conformal Ward identities presents a subtle problem. The regularization used here combines dimensional regularization and analytic continuation. Representation theoretic arguments, based on SL(2,R) current algebra, predict an exact result for the Wilson line anomalous dimension and, by building on previous work, we verify that the perturbative calculations using our regularization and renormalization prescriptions reproduce the exact result to order $1/c^3$ included. We also discuss a related, but somewhat simpler, Wilson line in Wess-Zumino-Witten models that yields current algebra conformal blocks, and we emphasize the distinction between Wilson lines constructed out of non-holomorphic and purely holomorphic currents.

Abstract:Using Wilsonian renormalization, we calculate the quantum correction to observable quantities, rather than the bare parameters, of the Higgs field. A physical parameter, such as a mass-squared or a quartic coupling, at an energy scale μ is obtained from that at a reference scale by integrating in the degrees of freedom in between. In this process, heavy modes decouple and the ultraviolet scale dependence is canceled in the observables. Abstract:We illustrate how the reorganization of perturbation theory at finite temperature can be economically cast in terms of the Wilson-Polchinski renormalization methods. We take as an example the old saw of the induced thermal mass of a hot scalar field with a quartic coupling, which we compute to second order in the coupling constant. We show that the form of the result can be largely determined by renormalization-group arguments without the explicit evaluation of Feynman graphs.

Abstract:This paper will be published in ``50 years of the renormalization group", dedicated to the memory of Michael E. Fisher, edited by Amnon Aharony, Ora Entin-Wohlman, David Huse, and Leo Radzihovsky, World Scientific. I start with a review of my personal and scientific interactions with Michael E. Fisher, who was my post-doc mentor in 1972-1974. I then describe several recent renormalization group studies, which started during those years, and still raise some open issues. These include the magnets with dipole-dipole interactions, the puzzle of the bicritical points and the random field Ising model.

Abstract:Perturbative renormalization provides the bedrock of understanding quantum field theories. In this work, I point out an alternative way of renormalizing quantum field theories, which is naturally encountered and well-known for the case of large N scalar field theories. In terms of bare parameters, this nonperturbative alternative renormalization differs qualitatively from its perturbative cousin: in the continuum limit, the bare coupling constant goes to zero instead of infinity, and there is no wave-function counterterm. Despite these differences, the resulting n -point functions of the theory are finite.
