Abstract:Reconstruction of tracks of charged particles with high precision is very crucial for HEP experiments to achieve their physics goals. As the tracking detector of BESIII experiment, the BESIII drift chamber has suffered from aging effects resulting in degraded tracking performance after operation for about 15 years. To preserve and enhance the tracking performance of BESIII, one of the proposals is to add one layer of thin CMOS pixel sensor in cylindrical shape based on the state-of-the-art stitching technology, between the beam pipe and the drift chamber. The improvement of tracking performance of BESIII with such an additional pixel detector compared to that with only the existing drift chamber is studied using the modern common tracking software ACTS, which provides a set of detector-agnostic and highly performant tracking algorithms that have demonstrated promising performance for a few high energy physics and nuclear physics experiments.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper discusses how to improve the trajectory reconstruction performance in the Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) experiment to address the performance degradation caused by detector aging. BESIII is a high-energy physics experiment used for τ-charm research. The study proposes to enhance the accuracy of trajectory reconstruction by adding a layer of CMOS pixel sensors based on advanced stitching technology between the existing Drift Chamber (MDC) and the beam pipe. The authors used a general tracking software called ACTS, which is a modular and high-performance tracking tool suitable for different high-energy physics experiments. By comparing the tracking performance using only MDC with the addition of pixel sensors, the study found that the addition of pixel sensors can significantly improve the spatial and momentum resolutions. Specifically, for tracking low-momentum tracks, pixel sensors can reduce material budget and simplify support structures, thereby improving the resolution. The paper also introduces the current tracking strategy of BESIII, including different tracking algorithms used within the BOSS software framework, and describes in detail how to convert GEANT4 simulated data into the internal format of ACTS for tracking analysis. The research results show that when the pixel sensors are placed at a distance of 35 millimeters from the center, the resolutions of d0, dz, and pT are improved by 67%, 93%, and 32% respectively. In conclusion, the paper aims to address the performance degradation of BESIII experiment caused by detector aging, and proposes a solution to enhance the tracking capability using innovative stitching technology and CMOS pixel sensors. Future research will further investigate the noise model of pixel sensors and its impact on tracking performance.
